  1. Larry, if you're reading this, please come back! I come here for deals, but mainly for you. I hope you will reconsider whatever is keeping you away, because you do matter to a lot of people. Take some time off and enjoy your life... but come back, please

  2. Bunker Samples is giving away a free pad library for KONTAKT (requires the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt 5.6.6 or later) that sounds pretty nice in the demo (I have yet to install and play it). This is a limited time freebie that ends August 9 2022. Here are the details from the developer's site: "5 Vietnamese tuned gongs, stretched across the keyboard. Morphing seamlessly between mallet and stick articulations with the articulation slider lets you play these gongs in ways that would be impossible to pull of in real life, and if that’s not enough, a powerful set of tools lets you further manipulate the sound." https://bunkersamples.com/freebies/

  3. Just popping in to say I hope everything's OK with our King of Deals. I did think the comments made to him the other day were a bit unappreciative given all that he does around here, and I notice that those people critical of Larry's posts aren't themselves posting any deals in his absence. So maybe those folks might take this opportunity to have a bit more appreciation, given how much time Larry spends posting deals around here, because this deals forum is very much dimished in his absence. So I hope you're OK Larry and if it's not clear already, we miss you!!!

While it's nice of all of you to care about Larry's absence, maybe you ought to be out making some money since you know it will all disappear upon Larry's return! 😁 (Although it's possible that Larry has simply taken all of the commissions he has earned from you guys and bought a tropical island to retire on... 🤔😜)

  8. When Euripides famously advised us to "question everything", he was indulging in a bit of hyperbole. As you're discovering, literally questioning everything leads you down a rabbit hole of indecision, frustration and paralysis. Sometimes, you're better off simply accepting that "this works, but that doesn't" and carry on. That said, I completely understand one's desire to understand how stuff works, and acknowledge that such understanding often leads to better practices. Do you need to know how automobiles work in order to drive one? No. But Is it helpful to understand its basic principles? Of course. The mechanically knowledgeable driver will get better fuel efficiency, longer-lasting brake pads, longer engine life and get into fewer accidents. Not because he can rebuild an engine in the back yard, but because his daily driving habits are informed by knowledge of what actions are harmful to the car, why preventative measures such as frequent oil changes extend the life of the engine, why slamming the brakes wears pads faster and even wastes gas by turning already-paid-for kinetic energy into useless heat energy. If you're really wanting to explore this rabbit hole, I'd suggest starting at the bottom with some reading on how digital audio works. A good introduction that won't overwhelm the mathematically-challenged is Digital Audio Explained for the Audio Engineer, by Nika Aldrich. The author keeps it simple - some critics say too simple - but still covers the important bases. It won't directly answer all of the questions posed above, but will give you a foundation for either answering them yourself or to better understand explanations you come across later. Once those fundamentals are clear, you can then tackle the broader questions such as how a DAW deals with mixed sample rates. I would refer you to the documentation for an explanation as to how that's handled. Effect plugins, for the most part, don't really care about sample rates. Multiplying two numbers gives the same result regardless of how many times per second you do it. When 2x oversampling is enabled within a plugin, it's just duplicating every sample before performing the operation. The upsampling itself is efficient, but now you're doing twice as many calculations in the same period of time, which reduces the availability of CPU cycles for other things. At some point you'll hit a wall where the CPU cannot keep up, and you have to increase buffer sizes or freeze tracks to carry on. However, up until that point there is no penalty for "making the CPU work hard". The CPU can either handle it, or it can't. It's not a draft animal. Oversampling neither improves nor diminishes audio quality. It does one thing only: it mitigates potential aliasing caused by harmonic distortion that some processors can produce. So does it hurt anything by always enabling oversampling? No. It just gives your CPU more work to do. The key is understanding where harmonic distortion comes from, which plugins might cause such distortion and which ones never will, and how much aliasing is acceptable. You can see aliasing with a spectrum analyzer, so start there. Keep in mind that the analyzer can show aliasing that isn't actually audible, so addressing it with 16x oversampling will only make you feel better, not improve your mix. Synthesizers have the ability to output different sample rates. However, the SR they use internally is unrelated. For example, say you want to generate a nice clean sine wave, A "pure" sine wave has no harmonics, so generating it at a higher sample rate gets you closer to that ideal. But when the sine wave is rendered in the DAW, it has to be at the same SR as the rest of the project, which implies a sample rate conversion within the synth. There is anecdotal evidence that some synths sound better at certain sample rates, which speaks more to the internal coding of the synth than any broader principle. As for FM8 specifically, how it works under the hood is proprietary to NI. I would expect that measures are indeed in place to prevent aliasing, simply because frequency modulation famously creates gobs of high-frequency components that can potentially exceed Nyquist. I'm guessing they wouldn't need 96KHz operators to handle this, but might well do the modulation at a high sample rate, which would allow aggressive filtering at the output. I suspect that FM8 doesn't care about your project sample rate except at the final output, but if I'm wrong about that then yes, FM8 could conceivably be a candidate for oversampling just because of its potential for creating "illegal" frequencies. Sample libraries are a little different, in that there is neither need for nor benefit to oversampling the source files. Whatever flaws a sample has are baked into the original recording. Few sample libraries are sampled at 96KHz, but many are 48KHz and most are 44.1. Within Kontakt, you can mix 'n match libraries with different sample rates. Kontakt handles that internally. Exactly how it does that, I don't know. NI doesn't like to talk about things like that. But I do know that if you're loading a 48 KHz library alongside a 44.1KHz library, you will not hear any difference between loading them into separate instances versus one instance of Kontakt and thus forcing SR reconciliation. Either way, the output is going to match the project sample rate. "Is it worth it making a song at 192khz if the song will sound REALLY good when rendered down to 24 bit 96khz?" Oh man, that's a rat's nest. Audio interfaces are designed for maximum fidelity at one specific sample rate. High-end pro units are likely to work best at 96 KHz, while most prosumer products work better at 44.1 or 48. None are optimized for 192 or 384. But that's irrelevant if your projects are 100% in-the-box and never include recorded audio. If your project consists entirely of sampled instruments and soft synths, a 96KHz project sample rate makes no sense unless you'll be sending it out for mixing/mastering/distribution and the people you're sending it to have requested 96KHz. Otherwise, all you'd be doing is forcing a lot of unnecessary sample rate conversions. A lot of users assume that if higher sample rates are objectively "better", then there must be some benefit to converting to higher rates. But sadly, you cannot add fidelity back in after it's gone. The reality is that you can only degrade fidelity. However, it's important to remember that digital audio is of such a high quality that it's far better than our ears can distinguish. The trick isn't so much knowing how to make it better, but how much it can be made worse before anyone notices. It comes down to this...there is nothing wrong with taking steps that you suspect might improve your music. Experimentation is to be encouraged. But if you can't actually hear the difference, what have you really accomplished? Ah, but I hear you say, just because *I* can't hear the difference doesn't mean somebody else can't hear it. Forget that. You are the benchmark. Nobody is ever going to be listening more closely than you do.

  12. This is a good analogy. Study up and learn what things really make a difference (my votes go for tires, brake pads and occasional throttle body cleaning 😁). In the case of the DAW, and sample rates and whatnot, it's free to experiment. Don't even trip on whether it's a "placebo effect." If it sounds better, it is better. Anyone who does this long enough will eventually have the experience of spending 15 minutes dialing in a compressor plug-in only to discover that it's bypassed (or actually on a different track). If you read about it, try it. See if it makes a difference. There's no authority judging us for subtleties in sound fidelity. How many people who listen to our music will listen to it as critically as we do? Probably none, but since I make music primarily to please myself, it has to sound good under the audio microscope. Grainy reverb tails, harsh (in a bad way) synth notes, my ears pick those right out.

I could be mistaken, but I think this description is for Gongster's Paradise, a different (and also nifty) Bunker Samples freebie that's been gratis for a while (and looks like it'll remain so, same as the Scary Viola Pizz further down the freebie page). The new and limited-time action appears to be the "free teaser instrument", described thusly on the page: Emphasis Bunker's.

  18. Spinning up some old hard drives I found this collab I did keyboardist with Thomas Trotter 20 years ago. I wrote the song around his motif, it didn't have a defined time signature hence the title. The project is long gone so this mix is what's left. I made quick background vid for it this morning to use on YT. Hope you enjoy it. -c

  25. If anyone didn't realize how important Larry is to this forum, they're realizing it now. I made a single deal thread yesterday to try to help. But without Larry, the threads have basically dried up. The critic who came after Larry hasn't contributed a single deal thread. I think it would be a nice gesture if that person posted an apology to Larry. This is a small community with a kind, friendly vibe that has kept me coming back. But I recall my own experience where an online bully made numerous vicious personal attacks on me in this forum because he was angry when I wrote that he misquoted me and was misrepresenting a point I made. The experience temporarily destroyed the enjoyment I normally have at this forum. Despite many years of managing and consulting on social media for major brands and being well aware of how badly some people behave in social media, being personally attacked at a place where I never expected it, a place that has always been very friendly, with others who shared my love of making music where I could chill, was jarring. I didn't see it coming, and it didn't fit with my perception of this forum. Now, I wouldn't go as far as saying that Larry dealt with bullying, I don't think it reached that level, but it was hostile behavior and the guy followed him around in multiple threads, so that impacted Larry's environment a good deal. I think it's clear from Larry's responses that it did bother him and once again, when you consider how much effort he puts into this forum, I think he's far more emotionally invested than most here. So he's likely going to take a personal attack harder than those who are more casual visitors. Has anyone PMed Larry and heard back? I wish we could all send him a greeting card and let him know that we miss him. If anyone wants to do a petition to bring Larry back, I'd sign. This forum is not the same without him. It's a giant loss even for a couple of days.

  26. Thankfully I was only experimenting with S1 since last spring (have to admit that I was pretty impressed by the simplicity of the DAW). After all I’m not a professional. Else I would have been anxious enough after reading Fender’s CEO interview. This guy has so little respect for the S1 users. And one of the good things in Studio One IMHO is that it’s not bloated at all, compared to some other DAWs. Sadly Mooney doesn’t realize that. I’m afraid that Fender’s decisions might prevail and S1 team will be overwhelmed having to work on two different projects at the same time and eventually S1 development will slow down to some extent. In each case time will show.

  39. I was going to say, if anybody knows Larry isn't doing some blanket "promotion" or is hiding his feelings about any company or product it would be me. His criticism can be worded firmly at times (not just with regard to IK) but also is typically quite fair criticism. Especially because he and everybody else is entitled to their opinion and I think he expresses his enough to not have to have some disclaimer or "my thoughts on this deal" with every deal (or even the ones he's not fond of). The resulting discussion usually takes care of the general vibe people have toward the deal or company, and Larry will jump in with his thoughts where he feels appropriate from what I can see. I'm a fan of Larry and what he does here, even if he just has to post all those other deals which make ours fall down further on the page 'Tis life and I must accept this when there is a sea of deals to be had.

  40. I do think that point is easily lost on newbies to the forum and those who don't spend much time here. It would be ideal if posts that quoted others contained quotes, as it's unclear when the voice is that of the poster or the developer. Technostica, you can take or leave constructive criticism, but if you want to be a more productive part of the community, you can express criticism without jumping to unsupported conclusions and lashing out, accusing forum members of shilling without any evidence to support your accusations. This exchange would have been civil had you just politely asked questions. Unlike MANY people who post deals in forums, Larry doesn't use affiliate links. He posts because he enjoys being helpful. Whereas some posters use affiliate links (hoping to make a sales commission if you buy using their links) and influencer "reviewers" are getting free product, sales commissions (though affiliate marketing relationships) and/or payment from developers to do their "reviews" (these days influencers take free product, use affiliate sales links to make money when you purchase a "reviewed" product and some of the more successful ones get payment up front to do "reviews" of products; this is, in the most clear language, where there is obvious shilling), Larry is not compensated with free products, getting paid or using affiliate links when he posts on the forum. You can't say that about the influencers here, even the ones I like.
