  4. The result of two years of work, version 1.7 is a free update to existing users. If it is as described, it may take away some resistance people have had to buying this classic library, as it seems like the legato will be easier to achieve. Listen to this video and I think you'll understand why this is one of my very favorite virtual instruments. Damn, it is so beautiful! And this is quite different from the old CSS I know and love. The shorts are amazing. This is amazing. And it's free. *Note: you need to do a backup into a directory to make it possible to play old music, plus this is a different library. What’s new in Version 1.7 Marcato mode (including runs) The new marcato articulation is much more powerful - it’s punchy, full of energy and grit, and can easily pull off fast, agile phrases with minimal editing. Play harder on the keyboard for a more pronounced attack, or to exaggerate a note within a legato phrase. You can play a snappy series of short notes, or a slower, more grand series of accented long notes. Playing a fast legato line will trigger the runs mode - you don’t need to enable anything or switch anything on or off - just play fast, and the script will do the rest for great-sounding runs. Improved sound The new mix mic is roomier, yet more detailed - lush, yet powerful. I spent a long time getting this balance right, and I feel that this mix should work well in a wide variety of styles and genres. Having said that, I really encourage you to experiment with the two spot microphones. These were mixed together into a single stereo track in the original version of CSS, but in version 1.7, you can now control them independently, allowing you much greater freedom to create your own customised sound. Low Latency legato I spent a (very) long time re-editing all of the legato transition samples, not only to significantly improve the timing, but also to ensure a more consistent volume envelope. This makes sequencing legato easier, particularly because it lessens the need for intensive “sculpting” of the dynamic modulation. In addition to these two factors, I also introduced a new “Low latency” mode, making it much easier to perform passages in real-time. Improved short notes All of the short notes in CSS, both bowed and plucked, have been re-edited to ensure better consistency of timing and length. I also improved the relative dynamic response between short note types, making it easier to switch between spiccato, staccatissimo (etc) without needing to pay as much attention to your playing velocity. Non-vibrato legato transitions Lastly, I have also improved the non-vibrato legato transitions. In the previous version of CSS I’d used simulated legato transitions, and while I didn’t record any new material for Version 1.7, I developed a technique to significantly improve the sound of these simulated transitions by editing the with-vibrato samples to create an all-new set of non-vibrato legato transitions. This not only sounds more realistic, but also makes the x-fade system more seamless and straightforward. For more information on all these features please read the Release Notes. *IMPORTANT - Before proceeding with the update: This update is designed to completely replace the previous version, therefore your old projects will not work properly. Do not update if you are in the middle of a project. If you would like to be able to open old projects, you will need to keep the previous version of Cinematic Studio Strings as a backup. The easiest way to create a backup is to do a search for your current "Cinematic Studio Strings" folder, make a copy of it right next to it, and rename the copied folder to "Cinematic Studio Strings original". (see image 1) After you have created the backup, run Native Access and locate "Cinematic Studio Strings" among your list of installed libraries. Right-click on Cinematic Studio Strings and select "Re-install". Native Access will download the new version of Cinematic Studio Strings. When this is finished, you should be able to re-open Kontakt, load a patch as per normal, and begin using version 1.7! You'll know that you're using the new version if you can see two separate Spot mics on the mixer. (see image 2) In Summary: You need to copy your current Cinematic Studio Strings folder and rename the copy to “Cinematic Studio Strings original” (or whatever name you choose). Then, right-click on “Cinematic Studio Strings” in Native Access and select "Re-install", and when that has finished, re-open Kontakt. Load a patch, it will be the new version (if there are mixer faders for “Spot 1” and “Spot 2”, you’ll know you’re using the new version). If you ever need to open an old project that was saved prior to updating, please follow these simple steps: Rename the new "Cinematic Studio Strings" folder to "Cinematic Studio Strings new” Rename the "Cinematic Studio Strings original" folder to "Cinematic Studio Strings” Open your old project, it should load without issue.

  8. I have tried so hard to like Tool. It's a genre that should be right up my alley. Sophisticated arrangements, intricate melodies, adventurous sounds, impressive musicianship. But for some reason it just doesn't click with me. I can appreciate it intellectually but there's no dopamine. OTOH, if I was ever imprisoned in North Korea and being tortured for state secrets, I'd still prefer being blasted with Tool over, say, Kid Rock.

  10. A short piece with piano and strings. Any thoughts on how to tame some of the piano transients? Some of them are very sharp, and when I listen on my phone I find it overloads the little speaker. I don't want to squash the dynamic range, but I find I can't add anymore than a dB or so of compression with hating the sound of it. Update - it took me a while to get back to this, since I was traveling last week. I think a combination of narrow eq's to target some of the piano resonances along with some active eq using the really cool (and free!) TDR Nova has helped a lot.

  12. I know, right? I get 🙄 when people show up here wanting to use Cakewalk to augment their musical capabilities. A DAW should be nothing but a way to record audio. Pitch correction? Learn how to sing for heaven's sake. Sonny and Cher didn't need Autotune to sell millions of records. Overdubs? How about learning some social skills and getting your musical chops together so that whenever you have a musical idea, musicians who want to play with you will be at your place within minutes? Did Prince have 2 resort 2 such things? Automatic double tracking? How about learning how to sing well enough that you can record two actual vocal takes? Would John Lennon take shortcuts like that? Compression? Learn how to control your dynamics when you play and sing. Did the great Motown hits use compression? EQ? Learn how to set up your instrument and mics, learn how to treat your room. If it needs EQ, you're doing something wrong when you're recording it. Comping? Learn how to play your instrument or sing so that you can actually get through a 5 minute song without screwing up. Do you think Fleetwood Mac or Boston or the Beach Boys resorted to cutting the best bits out of multiple takes and stitching them into a single "performance?" Fleetwood Mac had better things to do with their razor blades than cut and splice recording tape. Staff editing? Capture an egret, pull out a quill, and whittle it down with your pen knife. How much hand-holding do you need? Piano roll? Scott Joplin didn't need to edit his piano rolls, he just got good enough at playing so that he could play them right into the punching machine without screwing up. Don't get me started on "quantizing." Virtual instruments? How about getting some good-sounding real instruments? Mixing? Learn how to play it at the right volume so that it fits with the rest of the instruments in the first place. Recording itself. If you want people to hear your music, why not pick up an instrument and play it for them?

  16. Doing the drums last had never occurred to me for years until one day I decided to revisit the drums on a particular track that I thought was otherwise ok. Now at least in terms of the music I always do the drums last and can't imagine why I ever thought doing it differently was a good idea. Then I hand it over to myself to never finish or sometimes even start the vocals.😕

  17. The problem is, these icons don't share the same logic: W has a cross line but FX and PDC doesn't have. Also R! needs to be on state generally but it is highlighted unlike the others. If they had shared the same logic with the W icon they would be seen like this: But too much red color on the Mix Module could be discomfortable. So when they are not lit, the red color could have been discoloured like this: I'd prefer not to see red cross line on the icons when they are not lit. It would mean they are working as they are. Like this: And when they lit they'd look like this: Highlight with a red cross line would give an extra attention to prevent any mistake.

  23. @tezza Are you aware of Premiere Composer from Mister Horse? I don't know if you use Premiere. They have something similar for After Effects. https://misterhorse.com/premiere-composer It's a free extension that allows you to put your folders into it and then you have access to all your sounds (plus other assets) while you're working in Premiere. Open up the extension and drag the effects directly into Premiere. I just found out about it and haven't really set it up fully yet. It also comes with a lot of useful freebies, like transitions, text effects, sounds, etc.

  24. I looked on the IK website for the same question wrt Syntronik 2. The wording there and for MODO Drum CS (as well as other things I read) seem to be saying quite clearly (at least to me) that one of the ideas behind the CS + by-the-single strategy is so that people with CS versions can make by-the-single purchases (kits, instruments, etc.). I am adding @Peter - IK Multimedia to this in case he wants to chime in. You would have to check the "Compare" webpage to confirm that all features are included in CS versions, but it seems to me to be clear the intent of the CS [Custom Shop] revision is to give the consumers the ability to buy single kits, instruments, etc. MODO BASS 2 CS on the other hand specifically states feature limitations. We cannot assume all CS versions are fully functioning. Due diligence is required. That being said, it seems clear that individually purchased drum kits will work in MODO DRUM 1.5 CS based on what's printed on line.

  29. I have been reporting this issue before and it fell on deaf ears. I'm well aware there's a small team though - and it is why i'm repoting this again. This happens in every project I do when doing cuts and cropping a file. It will line up a few measures and later in the TV it automatically happens again. It is so faint if you do not listen for it you wont notice it, but when you do - you'll pickup the timing issue. Check the video. Time.mp4 Time.mp4

  34. Loss of a love one is always tragic on a personal level. This is a very nice tribute to your brother. As far as the song ---- I love it. It has the style and sound of the Blues that the UK brought back to the USA back in the mid-1960's. This reminds me a bit of the sound and style of Peter Green's FleetWood Mack. A bit raw, a bit rough and definitely the Blues. Great stuff!!!

  35. Holy crap, was I beat when my head finally hit the pillow early this morning. Yesterday was a record-breaking 3-Mocha day. That's three Starbucks Iced Mochas in one day. I should have been bouncing of the walls, as I normally don't drink caffeine. We've really been gigging too much this summer, I think. The band's pretty tight now, but we're at that stage where it's all becoming rote muscle-memory. I'll catch my mind wandering mid-song, admiring a hot waitress, wondering if the forecast rain will hold off until after loadout, how I should feel about Pell grant recipients getting a $20,000 break on college tuition, and whether another Chernobyl-class nuclear disaster might be imminent. And then a brief panic when I suddenly realize that a) I've forgotten what song we were playing, b) I think I'm supposed to be soloing now, and c) how come we don't have a single jam in Am? I'll have to bring that up at next rehearsal.

  37. I've been using version 2 and it seems much better so far. This is a case where developers keep prices set higher on some things and miss sales. If Mastering With The Mix ever discounted the upgrade to V2 I would've bought it. The upgrade has never been on sale. But their sale price of the full version at the resellers was really not far off the upgrade price. Not the best way to reward loyalty, especially if you own most of their plugins. In saying that, pretty happy I didn't buy it and snagged it for free instead, it's a good one 🤣

  41. Funny how we each gravitate towards different plugins. I've got a bit of a collection including those mentioned and numerous others. I almost always end up back at Amplitube. I currently have versions 3, 4, & 5 installed. I mostly use v3. Lost some free items in 4, and 5 is just far too resource hungry. others? Revalver, guitar rig, gk, and a few names slipping my collapsing memory...

  43. Cakewalk by Bandlab (CbB) is at the very least the equal of any DAW out there. I have numerous paid for DAWs like Cubase Pro 12, Studio One Producer 5; and others where I no longer keep paying for updates. Cakewalk easily competes with them all in terms of features and reliability and continuing development to expand the feature set while ensuring stability and eking out every bit of performance that the latest Windows and modern hardware can provide. All the while it is even still usable (though not supported officially) on win 7. CbBs free status is thanks to the generosity and alternate business model of a Singaporean business man who has vast interests in musical instruments, social media software that revolves around music. There are numerous other holdings that complement his involvement with Cakewalk. Of course I’m not privy to anything special or secret as the information I’ve relayed here was made known to the Cakewalk community at the time that Bandlab purchased all the Intellectual Property from Gibson. Cakewalk has never been more stable and supported than right now - at least in my estimation as someone who has used Cakewalk for more than 3 decades. Enjoy it.

  44. I think the idea there is to make any colours be non-distracting unless you're specifically "activating" it, which I agree is counter to what the button actually does and is a bit confusing. I think a better icon is needed - one with FX and a line through it, so in the deactivated state, it's not lit, but when it's activated you'll clearly see that "the button with the FX crossed out is on" kind of thing, meaning your FX are bypassed. I have a vague recollection that someone has done something similar in the Themes forum? Colin? Erik? Anyone? But yeah, I think that would be nice to be added into the stock themes. I'd suggest the PDC button could have something similar too.

  45. On the standalone version (I didn't load Studio One to test the VST): File | Preferences | User Interface | Look I changed it from Default to High Contrast 1. Much easier to see. High Contrast 2 grays things out a bit. I prefer 1. The Dimmed setting is also too light for me.
