  1. There's another page on this website that has DX7II patches: https://yamahablackboxes.com/collection/yamaha-dx7ii-fd-synthesizer/patches/ You can import the 'voice' patches (16 banks, 32 patches each) into FM8 but not the 'performance' syx files. Another source of DX7 Patches: https://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/d.j.benson/pages/html/dx7.html#patches 4 Brian Eno DX7 patches - these are just the settings, you'll have to enter them manually and save them) or download the PDF here: https://reverb.com/software/presets/reverb/2715-brian-eno-yamaha-dx7-patches

  2. They have timestamps, so if you choose to import them at their timestamp positions, they (theoretically) all just snap back into place. It.... does work, but it's iffy in my experience, depending on how the destination project is set up. I do a lot of remote mixing sessions for clients and the most common way we do it is like how @OutrageProductions mentioned. Most of the time they're just regular WAVs rather than B-WAVs but it doesn't matter if I have the original tempo map from the MIDI and they all start from the same place.

  3. Save a MIDI file from Reaper for markers/tempo/metronome if needed later. Bounce all audio tracks so that they start at Bar 1 / Beat 1 and export as stems into wave files at original SR/BR. You may also want to save as Broadcast Wave files. Label tracks/stems well for identification. Then when you import into CbB you can strip out the digital black and edit to your hearts content.

  9. I've heard similar complaints with other DX synths. Apparently not all softsynths import/interpret the syx files the same. Another thing maybe be because the FM8 was modeled after the DX7II, if the Arturia's DX7 V was 'accurately' modeled after a DX7 that might also account for some of the differences. Per EvilDragon on GearSpace about DX7 (hardware) vs FM8 sound differences: "The math is the same, yes. Now, it depends on the calculator which does that math. DX7 had limited CPU power and I would think that samples in it weren't calculated as 32 or 64-bit floats, which is what FM8 is doing. That's why FM8 sounds "cleaner" and not as "grungy" - it has more precise calculations."

  10. Don't know if it helps you but from what I recalI most of the issues are on non-windows machines. Regardless, the dev keeps updating his plugins so I assume the issues will get ironed out eventually. I don't know if I'll use it (don't really use these type of plugins) but I bought it anyway. At $3 it's a cheap way to support the developer.

  11. The "All the web patches" link has them in the folder "Dexed v1_0 (Black Winny)/DXCARTFO". But you can also download just the factory patches from https://yamahablackboxes.com/collection/yamaha-dx7-synthesizer/patches/

  12. I have no REAPER to Cakewalk converter. Target format must be completely understood for that, Cakewalk format is unknown (I can only extract some parts). REAPER has no build-in OMF export, but there is (relatively expensive) software https://www.aatranslator.com.au/ which can do that. I don't know how good it works in practice, nor how good Cakewalk can import produced OMFs.

  13. It also worked (for me) to add Calm, then browse to the Products page and add something else to the cart. When the icon at top then indicated I had one item in the cart, I could see both the paid lib and Calm there and removed the paid item to check out with Calm only. It's as though the "Add to cart" button works on the Calm page, but Calm doesn't count as an item, and since the cart link goes to the home page if the cart is empty you'd never have any way to know. Hardly calm-ing, and yeah, fairly whacked, operationally. Appreciate the freebie, though.

  17. We went down to the beach a few weeks back and shot this. First time I've ever done a video for a song before. Well...that's not entirely true. The band I was in when I was 17 made a music video with a friend's camcorder. But, it was only watched by us and our parents and is currently (probably) under a diaper in a landfill somewhere. Anyway, kind of proud of how it turned out and just wanted to share it with folks.

  20. Frankly, there are not many plugins in the ANY-2999-1 range that I would buy again at this price (almost $36 - $38 with tax in Europe)! There are better alternatives from small developers for eqs, compressors, deessers, ... for less (Toneboosters, Klanghelm, ...). Though the lower priced PA plugin deals are ok. I think some companies make a mistake if they add the whole European tax to the product prices! We do not earn 20% to 25% more than in North America. Usually prices are indeed higher here, but not at the whole tax percentage. Otherwise we would be really poor and consumption would drastically decrease!

  21. I think that covers a lot of it, but I will add: The CPU usage is higher, but from recent usage I'm not sure that actually matters unless you have a pretty insane amount of them in a project. This seems to be fine now really. My view on the analog emulations is a little different to you and Dan there. If I was going to try a Pultec on a particular track and then a Neve for example, they would be separate plugins I could A->B. Kirchhoff includes the A->B options and you can have multiple instances to A->B like separate plugins anyway. I'm less likely going to try and A->B advanced curves at the end of tweaking everything inside Kirchhoff, I'd normally pick one go with it and adjust to suit. Then choose B maybe, pick an emulation and adjust to suit then compare. The curves are sometimes so different, that having it retain the same frequency points often becomes irrelevant. Think of things like Pultec, Amek / Amethyst, Maag and hwo different they are even when setting the same frequencies. ProQ3 doesn't emulations at all, so easy win for me. Kirchhoff has relative mode which covers auto from my understanding, but I like being able to set the threshold, attack and release which to me, I wouldn't called advanced. Sure there are some great compressors where you can't, but most of the time I prefer being able to tweak those to suit and I don't like the Waves one knob series style. For me personally, easy win to Kirchhoff. The mix phase is a really interesting concept. I'm a little the same as you though, I'm not sure if I need that in real world situations, but pretty cool having it as an option within the one plugin. Maybe it's the perfect combination and best of both worlds, but who knows. I don't think there's necessarily a need for you to change to Kirchhoff. ProQ3 is still great, it's just that Kirchhoff can do all the same for a lot less money for anyone who doesn't have either. Dan's point about all the dynamic EQ part being able to to be done in FabFilter ProMB is true, but that's then another more expensive plugin making Kirchhoff even more attractive from a price perspective and considering they're pretty similar feature sets, Kirchhoff smashes FabFilter on the price (with voucher, or those on subscription, who have it anyway as their PA bundle or Forever29 etc) Sometimes I prefer using Kirchhoff purely for something different as it keeps the process a little more fresh and inspiring, sometimes I like ProQ3 because it's just what I know. There's no real bad choices here

  22. Hw are broadcast wav files different from regular wav files, and why would they be preferred for import to a different DAW?
    2 points
  23. For me it’s the FabFilter environment that just makes me smile and want to use their plugins. As if their FX are actual instruments in their own right. Simply marvelous. They rule the digital FX world IMO, while for emulations, I add Arturia’s and Slate’s for good analog measure. Plus some additional seasoning by Zynaptiq, Wavesfactory, Eventide and that sweet, sweet Gullfoss.

  25. These are just suggested specs. FWIW, I recorded 16 simultaneous tracks in Next while playing back an existing 32 tracks on a 2.0Ghz / 4 core Intel Celeron J4125 with 8GB of RAM... and this was to an external USB 3 SSD. No plugins though. I did the same in CbB and had no issues there either. The specs are intentionally on the higher side, as people generally want to load their project up with plugins.

  27. Dexed 0.96 has a better convertion from the syex files. FM8 has a problem converting the E.Piano 1 or E.ORGAN because of the "." in name.

  28. Thanks for the response. If you have common plugins between both of you, you would also be able to work in Cakewalk and send the project file and audio folder back and forth as well (keep that folder clean before sending by doing a "Save As..." and saving to a new folder and copy the audio over in the save dialog box). This would take "reaper" out of the loop for the mixing phase, but may be simpler as he has used Cakewalk before. If the focus is helping him learn, this will also let him view mixing stages a little better. Also to the "teaching" end of things, some video conferencing software (Zoom and the like) allow for screen sharing which would enable him to see and interact with you while you are working. There is lag associated with this and often a significant bandwidth usage jump (may be a limiting factor), but keep that in mind as well. When on the final stages of things, this can also expedite the back and forth with what is being done.

  31. I thought I was going to land on a 339 as a life long Gibson owner but tried a few and then ended up buying a Heritage Prospect instead. I would only buy on-line if the return policy is good. I played a couple 339s in local stores and the Heritage mopped the floor with them. But I've played some 339s that are quite good.

  32. We collaborated on 2 or 3 of his songs going back a few years ago and when we were discussing this one he reminded me it was difficult before and i vaguely remember that but not exactly what the issues were. His creativity is good and over time he sends me his songs and i tell him what i hear in his mix to improve. This one the mix is so very bad so I offered to mix it. He was and is better now but still not very daw experienced and has a disability so maybe just the unfamiliar steps on his end were difficult for him. I think he had been using cakewalk for all the others but moved to reaper so this one is created in reaper that i know nothing about. So I just wanted to get ideas for the best easiest way to get his reaper work into my cakewalk. Thanks for the reply! ps. In this case his project file in reaper is likely very simple no bells and whistles to need to recreate on my end

  39. Dan poisoned his own review by making sure to remind us every chance of how biased he was. He downplayed everything that Kirchoff was better at. He did make sone good points, but it was hard to ignore the fact that he made it clear from the beginning what his conclusion was going to be. I love Dan's videos but like all of these guys, he (same goes for Paul) is showing signs that his popularity has swollen his ego to the point where I can only take these guys in doses. Thanks for posting though.

  41. The reason this was asked about, is that Windows programming defaults were changed for some of those type of things when Windows 64-bit OS became available, and eventually the standard. File permission to add/modify things in certain system directories has changed as well. I don't know how 32-bit Home Studio 4.01 was originally meant to reference its preference files. In 64-bit versions, some of that now gets set and modified in the normally-hidden "AppData" subfolders under the logged in user name folder. The running version of Master.ins for (64-bit) CbB typically resides there, and other copies can exist but are only reference copies. If the running version of Sonar you are using does actually try to write to a Master.ins in the directory you have listed, it may not have proper permissions to change or save that file. That might be causing what you describe, unless there is some other issue saving an update to a system file like that.

  43. The real (additional) question with anything Melda is whether you're likely to commit (some day) to buying one or more of the big bundles, and which bundle(s) the current plug counts toward. In this case, MPhaserMB counts toward MComplete (of course), MTotalFX (obvs) and MCreativeFX. No matter how little you buy/obtain a plug for, 35% of the regular price is credited against the cost of the relevant bundles. (Melda gives you 70% credit for the purchase price, and assumes plugins bought via 3rd party were 50% off, so 35%.) For MPhaserMB at $43 regular, that's ~$15 credit, minus whatever was paid for to get the freebie. Which only matters if you're eyeing one or more bundles in the long run, but in that case, it can matter quite a bit, eventually. A nice bonus is that Melda credits are applied regardless of any sale going on. For example, registering MPhaserMB should take ~$15 off the cost of the MCreativeFX bundle, which is $711 regular price. When Melda has a BF half-off sale and the bundle is $356, you still get the $15 discount, not half of that or some sale-prorated amount. Lump a few cheapies together over the course of a year or two and wait for a sale on bundles, and it adds up dramatically. It's quite possible to go from zero to MComplete for less than a quarter of the bundle price, a little at a time, if Melda scratches your itch and you're patiently strategic.

  46. Original sounds? I don't know - I've had it too long to recall what came with it and what I added or downloaded from my DX7II. At one point there were multiple places on the web where you could download the patches from the original ROMs that came with the DX7. Same for the DX7II which had its own initial patches. I opted for FM7 because to my ears it duplicated the sound of my DX7II - not the DX7. I never really cared for the DX7, always thought it had a transistor/metallic sound and every time (now I'm dating myself) a band brought one into the recording studio I always had to massage (EQ, compress, add FX, etc.) the crap out of the tracks to make them sound good and work with the other instruments. When the DX7II came out I was wowed. It had the warmth & brass that I always thought the DX7 was missing and was stereo instead of mono. I was impressed enough that I took out a loan and bought one. I know a lot of people can't hear the difference between the DX7 & DX7II but that's on them (a lot of people can't taste the difference between butter & margarine either), maybe that I was constantly working with them in a professional setting made the differences more audible. As always YMMV. Nowadays when I listen to a DX synth or a one that can do DX I no longer judge it against Yamaha hardware I judge it like I would any other soft synth - tonality, presence, quality of the patches, etc..

  47. As far as my opinion/taste on DX patches - I don't care for most of the piano type sounds that seem poplar & string imitations. I do find it excellent for lead synth, bells, electronic type sounds and sound fx, some of the basses are excellent (depends on range needed as most fall apart if played too high or low) and some pads. FM7 was used for the bass on this track, DAW: Project 5.

  49. You might be new around here. So I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Larry, who has given many of us so many great deals, he's known as the King around here. He post lots of deals, every day, that help others get deals they otherwise would have missed. The reason he doesn't post the prices is probably to save himself a little time. And the majority of us around here have learned to accept this as part of the deal we get. BTW I went to the site. As I was gonna post the prices. But there really is too many choices. You curious?
