  2. Reminder we are very close to releasing the final 06 update. If there are any blocking issues related to this release please report them ASAP. PS: As per requests the audio ports for friendly names no longer include the numeric prefix and I've also removed the prefix for inserted synth tracks. There are also a handful of additional bug fixes.

  5. I suspect it's a change in marketing approach. "Discovery" is kind of like "Ethnic." It assumes that there is one dominant group (us) and everything in the rest of the universe is "other." So, for example, all the two billion or more Asian people in the world are categorized as "ethnic" (as in Jade Ethnic Orchestra) and their culture needs to be "discovered." By whom? Maybe somebody at NI figured out that the bland category "Spotlight" might be a better term to appeal to their international customers. Or maybe not. I'm doing a video on why I prefer the term "World Music" to "Ethnic Music," so it's on my mind.

  9. treesha's lovely jam is indeed a testament to the precept that free instruments can be creative catalysts. Reminded me that I recently dug out an old freebie that I'd never used, the Janggu. It's a traditional Korean bongo-like instrument, part of a collection offered by the Seoul National University. I threw it in as an experiment, just because I wanted some non-standard percussion on a song. It surprisingly changed the direction of the composition. I had originally discovered that instrument thanks to a thread similar to this one on the old forum.

  10. It's a logical detour in any discussion of freeware. You can't talk about freeware without acknowledging the reason commercial developers offer it in the first place: to encourage interest in their paid products. Granted, there are some great freebies out there that were created by dedicated hobbyists and altruistically shared (e.g.Thomas Mundt's Loudmax limiter). But you have to sift through a lot of klunkers to find them, which is why this kind of knowledge crowd-sourcing remains such a longstanding staple of recording forums. And you cannot confidently pronounce a freebie as useful without comparing it to its commercial alternatives. The basic premise of the whole thread, as stated by Starship Krupa, is the belief that "a person can put together an excellent system entirely with freeware". He can make such a proclamation only because he has extensive experience with both free and non-free software. So yeh, talking about commercial software in a freeware context is legit.

  12. Hi Everyone We have just released the eighth track off our new album Regeneration. The track is called Troubled Times. This track is pretty old, but it seems quite a good title for what has been happening this past year or so! Hope you enjoy it. 13. I suggested this when the Tempo Track was added, but then recently I noticed that Piano Roll View already has it for the Articulations Map and Drum Pane. It might not even be intentional, rather an artifact created by the presence of scroll bars, but it's at least some visual indication that there are hidden screen elements that can be pulled down to open. Looks kinda slick, actually. I'd like to see these added at either or both ends of the Track View Time Ruler.

  14. I didn't express myself well. This is not about political correctness. This is not about "sinister" overtones. I am only looking at this through an aesthetic perspective. It's just a question of accuracy in my book. Music has never been about borders. It flows like a river. Pretty much all of American popular music is a blend. For me, using the term "World Music" just makes more sense than "Ethnic Music." AmpleSound sells a banjo, which they brand as Ample Ethno Banjo. If there's a young woman in Nashville who learned to play banjo from her father, and he learned from his father--does she think she's making ethnic music with it? She just thinks it's Country. But to a Chinese company like AmpleSound it is only an Appalachian instrument. Ethnic music. To me, when you follow this line of thinking, it doesn't make any sense, that instruments should be categorized as exotic just because of where they are played. We all live on the same world, right? Let people in the political world concern themselves we people who are "ethnic." For us, everybody who makes music is part of our family. And by the way, there is no better example of this than forums like this one. I've made friends from all over the world.

  16. It's actually an oldies tune that I found a MIDI file for. My hobby is enjoying creating vocals around oldies songs, and modify the MIDI's to add dynamics and customizations using synths and audio plugins. Sorta my personal "karaoke" backing-tracks! I also use Band-In-A-Box to develop new backing track styles totally different from the original songs, especially with their thousands of available styles recorded using real musicians., and ability to completely customize the results. I believe the music jargon is creating "covers" for these songs. Being retired and single, I got way more time than money, so spend hours in my music studio tinkering with songs and vocals.

  17. Yes i got it and trying to sort out what the features do. I think i will like it and i see that the style/mood of it will be in a way narrower than i would like due to the instrument options. With only a few hours invested and still not clear on it, fwiw. Last nite i figured out how to have each of the 4 use at a time instruments have their own outputs, recorded what they created on separate aux tracks, then used melodyne on one of the parts, converted it to midi and played a vst instrument along with the other 3 parts and it gave me other feel options. So a few extra steps there to add variety to the included instruments. It has cool features like divisi and i plan to invest more time in learning to use it.

  19. Yes it is. The Lindell TE-100 eq is really a good eq once you get use to the UI. That Acme onto comp is another gem. The Lindell 254E is nice too. Townsend comp is also another great comp. Excellent.

  20. Every piece has its own note which should correspond to the virtual instruments you use. Maybe the hi-hats notes doesn't have a corresponding hi-hat on those notes in your virtual instrument. Check the note numbers. The note number sent. Does that number have a sound in the virtual instrument? It usually is possible to change which note the hardware hi-hat sends when hit.

  21. What I want ain't rocket science: I want any action that would set the "dirty" bit (that is, put an asterisk after the file name in the header to let you know it hasn't been saved) to be Undoable. I know I said "for mixing moves," but that's just the area where I most often get bitten. The asterisk tells me that the program is tracking those actions, so I would like to leverage that. @Noel Borthwick, for whom would this be confusing? I find current behavior confusing as I find it hard to remember what actions are undoable. I came from Mixcraft, where pretty much every action is undoable, including plug-in settings. No confusion: I did something. If I hit Ctrl-Z the action will reversed. Up in the Edit menu, it says "Pan adj." next to Undo/Redo. Of course, as with all such sweeping changes to behavior, for those who only want the limited set of actions to be undoable, this would be a settable preference rather than a mandatory change.

  25. This worked for me on a BG in a "vintage r&b" side, but perhaps because the UI has a way of helping you (well me) "hear" things a bit differently. Feels like a pultec style eq with different/more set points.

  26. This is indeed a beautiful song. Great lyrics and excellent performance. I tend to draw upon advice given by Thelonious Monk to a young but rising vocalist. This advice was --- don't try and be so perfect but just follow the music. Your song might have a few minor points that you might want to correct but you certainly have engaged in following the music and presenting a great song.

  29. It would be horrendous for both types of operations to be linked to the same undo history IMHO. Imagine mix moves being undone because you wanted to undo something else unrelated that you did earlier ! That would suck. I don't use the mixer snapshots personally, I find it quicker to just work live with the faders but I can understand how they wouldn't really work for someone who just wants a quick way of revert some fader moves as you'd have to be able to see into future to know to make a snapshot before you needed it ! How about instead of copying other DAWs we come up with something better ? Imagine a 'continuous snapshot' that records all mixing operations as it goes. Now imagine being able to grab a control ( maybe a slider ? ) and 'rewind' them by dragging that slider back through the last however many moves until you were back where you wanted. If you decided you didn't like the older mix, fine - just drag the slider forward again and carry on from where you left off. If you decided you preferred how the mix sounded at a certain point along the mix history , fine...go to where you want and make retrospective snapshot and carry on from there ...no need to be able to predict the future. I call it " Mix Rewind "...and I claim my $5

  37. Chris I used it successfully for solo cello (live recording), other orchestra stuff, vocals and mastering. The filters are excellent the mid bands mind-blowing... you just need to get used to it how it really works... read the manual first to get the grips with it then just listen and turn, on the high band, don't think - just turn that knob... 🙂

  48. just piling on the compliments - great vocal mixing ear candy, and when there's no ear candy, your voice still conveys everything super clearly. Love the bounce this song has. You might shorten your intro groove from what sounds like eight bars to four, just as an experiment? And/or maybe add a lead instrument playing a brief hook? Something in the first bit to pull us in a little harder might be an idea. cheers, looking forward to hearing more of your work! -Tom
