  5. Don't forget the hundreds of free prestes at both KVR and Rekkerd. I have all the original DX/TX etc prestes in FM8 and it is easy to import/convert. https://rekkerd.org/patches/plug-in/fm7-fm8/ https://www.kvraudio.com/banks.php?s=list&products[]=fm8-by-native-instruments&order=date

  6. As far as my opinion/taste on DX patches - I don't care for most of the piano type sounds that seem poplar & string imitations. I do find it excellent for lead synth, bells, electronic type sounds and sound fx, some of the basses are excellent (depends on range needed as most fall apart if played too high or low) and some pads. FM7 was used for the bass on this track, DAW: Project 5.

  10. Thanks to all who contributed to the discussion. I rarely use phasers, but the thread inspired me to spend some time exploring. In case it helps inspire others, here's what I did. Background: For about a year (+/-) I have used Kushview Element as a host to teach myself (i.e., test and explore) Melda Plugins every so. One session started with Melda Sound Factory and MPowerSynth but now has Pigments and Analog Lab as sound sources to which I gradually added Melda FX plugins, mostly in a long serial chain. Its super simple to explore one at a time. Over the past few months I have been working on creating texturtal MSF patches based on some wavetables. Slow morphed changes shaped with a note-triggered envelope plus (so far) ModWheel --> table position for real time manual textural shifting. So, today (thanks to the conversation), I added MPhaser and MPhaserMB to my current Kushview Session, explored the factory presets and downloaded/community presets in both and found an MB preset that really complements several of the slow, evolving MSF wavetable-based presets I have been gradually developing. Its one that has 3 bands, has a nice low band sound and some nice mild, but noticeable phaser width LFO modulation in the middle range. I can easily see adding the MB Phaser into some MSF Presets directly at some point, but exploring the MPhaser/MB plugins like this (one at a time) helps focus my attention and greatly facilitates a developing sound design process. I apologize for my enthusiasm, but I have wanted to build in some additional layers to these sounds since I last worked on them and thanks to the discussion of Melda's Phasers, I have taken a major leap forward by discovering how I can make use of a 3-band phaser to in effect add more controllable dimensions in a way that pleases my ear and fits one of my performance styles. These plug-ins might not meet everyone's needs, but I now have a better appreciation of phasers and will be using them. 🙂

  13. And a Foot Note...Discounters use "Gated" pricing because they can't ADVERTISE prices lower than what the Vendor allows publicly. Therefore, to be able to offer lower pricing they use a "gate" so that you have to be logged in to see the LOWER THAN ADVERTISED prices.

  18. The real (additional) question with anything Melda is whether you're likely to commit (some day) to buying one or more of the big bundles, and which bundle(s) the current plug counts toward. In this case, MPhaserMB counts toward MComplete (of course), MTotalFX (obvs) and MCreativeFX. No matter how little you buy/obtain a plug for, 35% of the regular price is credited against the cost of the relevant bundles. (Melda gives you 70% credit for the purchase price, and assumes plugins bought via 3rd party were 50% off, so 35%.) For MPhaserMB at $43 regular, that's ~$15 credit, minus whatever was paid for to get the freebie. Which only matters if you're eyeing one or more bundles in the long run, but in that case, it can matter quite a bit, eventually. A nice bonus is that Melda credits are applied regardless of any sale going on. For example, registering MPhaserMB should take ~$15 off the cost of the MCreativeFX bundle, which is $711 regular price. When Melda has a BF half-off sale and the bundle is $356, you still get the $15 discount, not half of that or some sale-prorated amount. Lump a few cheapies together over the course of a year or two and wait for a sale on bundles, and it adds up dramatically. It's quite possible to go from zero to MComplete for less than a quarter of the bundle price, a little at a time, if Melda scratches your itch and you're patiently strategic.

  19. If you're at that stage you know yourself that you're going to get it anyway :). It's Melda. It's a phaser. It's pretty deep. Just get it. Question you need to ask yourself is do you buy the cheapest crap they've got and chuck it in the bin or do you spend €15 more to get something you might use?

  23. In order for you to be replaced by said software, a model of your voice must be trained by such, which is rarely a concern for nobodies of the internet like myself and potentially you and others. Not really studios, but Spotify is. Making use of AI generated music would solve the primary problem they have currently, which is having to pay musicians to use their music. And they barely do that these days. Wouldn't all of those fall into prior art? Because we have yet to meet an algo that can train on models of real life stuff which doesn't exist yet. This is one of the reasons why 15.ai doesn't exist anymore and Uberduck has removed several voices models which came from the former. The owners of these voices (people, actors and voice actors) demanded them to be removed off the platform.

  24. Another good source for DX presets in the sysex format, which can be imported into FM8, is this one http://bobbyblues.recup.ch/yamaha_dx7/dx7_patches.html The "ALL THE WEB PATCHES" download has more than 12,000 files and I think each file is a soundbank with 32 presets.

  28. Original sounds? I don't know - I've had it too long to recall what came with it and what I added or downloaded from my DX7II. At one point there were multiple places on the web where you could download the patches from the original ROMs that came with the DX7. Same for the DX7II which had its own initial patches. I opted for FM7 because to my ears it duplicated the sound of my DX7II - not the DX7. I never really cared for the DX7, always thought it had a transistor/metallic sound and every time (now I'm dating myself) a band brought one into the recording studio I always had to massage (EQ, compress, add FX, etc.) the crap out of the tracks to make them sound good and work with the other instruments. When the DX7II came out I was wowed. It had the warmth & brass that I always thought the DX7 was missing and was stereo instead of mono. I was impressed enough that I took out a loan and bought one. I know a lot of people can't hear the difference between the DX7 & DX7II but that's on them (a lot of people can't taste the difference between butter & margarine either), maybe that I was constantly working with them in a professional setting made the differences more audible. As always YMMV. Nowadays when I listen to a DX synth or a one that can do DX I no longer judge it against Yamaha hardware I judge it like I would any other soft synth - tonality, presence, quality of the patches, etc..

  29. @Kirean yeah it’s not easy to develop complex instruments that need all kinds of data, but I do very much understand and that is exactly why we built Mndala 2 to be the way it is. It’s just one app/engine that runs all, self downloads new instruments and samples and loads them, and does not put a bunch of weird DRM hidden files in your computer. And glad you dig our sounds! :)

  32. Hmm. Could've sworn... Sorry. Odd, maybe they didn't feel like competing with what was already included? Dunno per https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/synths/fm8/ near bottom of page. So for $10 (the OP deal) you get 1200 presets and a synth that can import tons of free or 3rd party ones. Still sounds like a no brainer to me.

  33. These are just suggested specs. FWIW, I recorded 16 simultaneous tracks in Next while playing back an existing 32 tracks on a 2.0Ghz / 4 core Intel Celeron J4125 with 8GB of RAM... and this was to an external USB 3 SSD. No plugins though. I did the same in CbB and had no issues there either. The specs are intentionally on the higher side, as people generally want to load their project up with plugins.

  35. You might be new around here. So I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Larry, who has given many of us so many great deals, he's known as the King around here. He post lots of deals, every day, that help others get deals they otherwise would have missed. The reason he doesn't post the prices is probably to save himself a little time. And the majority of us around here have learned to accept this as part of the deal we get. BTW I went to the site. As I was gonna post the prices. But there really is too many choices. You curious? Join everyplugin.com and get to know Koby.

  36. The tone inferred is exaggeratory. There was nothing innovative about that, as this has been the norm in the 1980s, when software was built largely for developers and users in that field. That's why every major text editor from the 1980s was extensible in this way, along with every IDE and a lot of other software as a result of it. REAPER leaning into this is not innovative, it's a throwback to market norms of existed 40+ years ago, and this is why it's so polarizing. REAPER is still developed like it is being developed in the 1980s for a 1980s user base. Some people will love that (it's why Linux has a cult following), but the majority will simply not have the time or want to bother with it. Extensibility will always exist, esp in professional software, but the degree to which it is normalized this day is VERY different from what it was in the past. REAPER still lives in that past. This is a valid issue and one that I have voiced in the past on this forum. Some of these themes attempt to make the entire DAW look like another (Logic, Cubase, Pro Tools, etc.) which can make it more difficult for newer users to utilize reference material and [video] tutorials. They can only be assumed to work well for the person who is pushing them. This is why some DAWs have limited editing of keyboard commands and UI layout. It's like a Calculus textbook using a TI-83 for everything, but you show up with a Casio. Not only do you have to learn how to do the math, but you also have to level out the disparities between the two devices/interfaces in real-time while doing so. And that's ignoring the fact that the most offensive parts of REAPER's UI are the parts you can't theme, anyways.

  37. Hello to all my CW friends! It has been a hectic summer for me, but I managed to get one project finished. This is a song that I wrote and posted on the old song forum in 2014. Since then, I remixed it with fresh, new tools and filmed this video just a few weeks ago. I admit that it's rough, in fact, the raw footage is SO rough that I had to dress it up with various f/x to hide the poor lighting and staging. This should probably be seen as a first cut, no more. However, it's gritty enough to convey a sense of urgency which is what I was looking for, more or less. It is a wide-open book, just waiting for your input. As always, much gratitude for your time and patience. This song was inspired by the old saying "the devil made me do it", nothing else.

This will cause all projects to rebuild their wav images the next time they are opened.

  43. Just FYI, you are not going to lose the project data in a situation like this. If you are concerned about a project potentially becoming corrupted, you can still save it with a new name to keep them both (keep the original, and save with a new name after a glitch). The Edit->Preferences->Audio->Playback and Recording is good to visit any time you are changing the hardware you are working with. This forces the application to look for what you are trying to use and will let you know if it is available or not. The ASIO mode will only allow one device to be active at a time, so if you disconnect that, Cakewalk has nothing to talk to until you shift modes/select another available device.

  44. Yes indeed. I pre ordered TONEX MAX so have had it since day 1, as well as MAX I own all of the Amalgam Audio capture packs and a few selected packs from other vendors, I personally don't bother with the ToneNet, went through a similar thing way back with BIAS Amp, no thanks, comercial packs only for me, no more time sucking rabbit holes For me personally TONEX stands head and shoulders above all other Amp Sims, of which I also own just about all of them. I've dropped and no longer follow most of them, but I keep buying everything Kuassa, Nembrini and Softube release, don't use them after an initial checkout, but I like to support those 3 because you never know, they may jump onboard the new wave and push the envelope. It'll be an exciting day when something comes along and tops TONEX, whatever it is I'll be first in line, that will be one hell of a unit, might even be TONEX II, IK would be wise to jump on some of it's missteps from this round, although some which can for the most part be taken up by using TONEX from within Amplitube 5, and if they keep improving on what it has already done, the mind boggles.

To see the top link "bells & whistles" in Mobile mode, the phone zoom can be any setting with Chrome browser at 50% and phone flipped sideways. With phone zoom minimized, Chrome has to be 75% or less, or they all disappear. In Desktop mode, they disappear when Chrome zoom reaches 100%, flipped vertical or horizontal. Before today all I got was the sign-in link but now it's all there. I like the new one click sign-in.

  46. Nah. The same way you don't throw out unfashionable clothes, you just store them until they're fashionable again, time resets everything. Keeping my dome shaved is too much work, and my next haircut will likely be in June 2024. The red pigment visible in my thumbnail, however, will unfortunately never return. It was a most pleasant gig. 80 degrees, partly overcast. Nice stage, outdoors in a really cool parklike area behind a diner alongside the North Cascades Highway, a popular summertime tourist route that takes you from the Pacific Ocean to the Cascade Mountains. Many in our audience were motorists who'd heard the music from the highway and pulled in for dinner. That made our employers happy. They gave us food, always a sure way to a musician's heart. Probably literally, in this case. The mood was further enhanced by the gentle incense of a distant wildfire. Mmm, summertime in the Pacific Northwest.
