  1. The TD-3 (or the original 303 for that matter because they sadly modeled the sequencer quite close to the original) is clunky to program. So to make it easier, a MIDI keyboard or sequencer is sometimes prefered. Fun fact: the clunkyness of the programming had a heavy influcence on acid as a music style and thus music in general. People started inputting random sequences with accents and glides and pitch etc. which gave rise to some of the most famous acid lines. There are several Max4life devices (for us Ableton users) which outputs random acid lines (free: https://maxforlive.com/library/device/8357/sting-by-iftah-a-really-nice-acid-line-generator). The randomness is basically an emulation of what people did.

  9. I’m quite fond of their later vocal libraries, Mimi Page Light and Shadow in particular, but the entire Voices of Wind collection is pretty pretty good. Then, the even more recent Hyperion orchestral series, on which I hope they will continue to build. Just checked. I must have over 30 of their libraries, and lots of them are quirky but interesting to say the least. Always made with dedication and professionalism. They are the other half of 8Dio from the days of Tonehammer and definitely the most interesting of both.

  10. For the person without much cash this would be a good price to get a lot of stuff. It comes with a bevy of t racks effects, but you can't use them outside of the platform, and there are usable sounds. I am not sure it compares at all to Kontakt, though others may have different opinions. At $49 I would recommend this for sure to someone who just wanted to stick their toe in the water when it comes to sample players.

  11. Hey all . . . here's something from my studio that I played around with for way too long, finally became an actual song. Originally came about after hearing some Acadian music (eastern Canada) on the radio one night, kind of an Irish roots thing . . . and I added my pop music thing to it, let me know if it's any fun for you . . .

  13. Run Steinberg Download Assistant SpectraLayers 10.0.20 August 2023 This version contains the following improvements and issue resolutions. Improvements - “Voice Denoiser” and “Unmix Noisy Speech” now also support hardware acceleration for NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs (Windows only). - The “Unmix > Transcription” function now supports Hebrew. - The quality of the “Unmix Noisy Speech” and “Voice Denoiser” functions has been improved. - New shortcuts to activate individual channels have been added the “Channels” panel: Alt+Up and Alt+Down. Issues resolved Issue Loading and exporting wav files now remembers the bit depth. Dithering options have been added. Only DirectX 12.1 capable GPUs are now listed for AI processing, and a warning is shown for those GPUs with less than 4GB of VRAM. “Select Similar” and ARA scanning can now be cancelled during processing. Scrolling with the mouse wheel in the “Layers” panel when many layers are available has been improved to prevent accidental volume changes. The area to resize a panel has been increased. This reduces accidental cloing or resizing of neighboring panels. The .wav extension of existing audio files is now recognized when using the “Exporting Audio of All Layers” function, so that files with the same name can now be overwritten. If using multiple layers in a project, the “Layers” panel now stays where the active layer was when deleting or adding a new layer. You can now drag and drop events from Cubase and Nuendo into the standalone application of SpectraLayers. Duplicated audio events containing SpectraLayers as an ARA extension will retain all edits in SpectraLayers after closing and reopening the project. Dragging layers back into the Cubase or Nuendo timeline are no longer shifted by a few samples. Layers containing special characters can now be dragged back into Cubase or Nuendo. Resampling or reinterpreting a project format no longer leads to a freeze or an incorrectly displayed area. The “Unmix Noisy Speech” and “Voice Denoiser” functions no longer create a buzzing noise. The “Eraser” and “Amplifier” tools no longer change the layer size when used on the borders of layers. Dialogs are no longer hidden when using SpectraLayers in a separate window in ARA mode. Audio peaks above 0dB no longer generate crackles when using ASIO playback. Using “Silence”, “Tone”, and “Noise” functions with nothing selected no longerrenders the application unreliable. Using GPU acceleration for AI processes in ARA mode no longer causes the application unreliable. Repeating certain AI processes while using GPU acceleration no longer renders the application unreliable. An issue where sessions were not fully cleaned after closing multiple projects and then reopening SpectraLayers has been solved. Renaming a project tab without activating it now refreshes the display correctly. Merging up a layer now always results in the proper layer name and color. The “Edit > Paste Special > Paste and Mix” function is now displayed correctly in the “History” panel. When recording audio with the “Return to Start on Stop” option disabled, the recorded audio will no longer be lost after playback. Character decoding has been improved when transcribing Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, and Hindi. Creating a new project with the “Return to Start on Stop” option disabled no longer sets the playhead to an invalid position. Recording with the “Return to Start on Stop” option disabled now shows up correctly in the “History” panel.

  14. I generally didn't mind the ST UI, except the browser is terrible and that's the most important thing for a ROMpler type instrument. I do think red is the worst possible accent color. Our eyes are sensitive to that color, evolutionary speaking, so it is a bit too prominent. That's why Stop Lights and Signs are red, Lol. They should give the option for a less awful accent color... Bad browser, too many patches with too extremely similar names (makes search less effective), CPU/RAM usage is too high (and no purge function), lacking articulations and round robins, no decent legato emulation for instruments that could benefit, inability to manage content after installation (except manually in file explorer), and a lot of redundant bloatware just to manage activations. Also, they really should use better efficient compression for the samples. I also had tons of issues accessing their servers. It only worked randomly, and always broke instantly when I tried to purchase anything. Last time I tried to purchase the TS3 upgrade, it broke. And I broke. So I deleted the entire account and moved on. I wasn't about to tether to my phone to download that much data, and I was not using it at that point. I was just going to upgrade simply to keep everything up to date.

  20. Ok, ok... Since I obviously couldn't get any of the old nerds to come out and play, here's the answer: Those letters were the designations of 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 from the original sexidecimal notation (as it was called) which were used with the first computers! Now it's called hexidecimal and uses the letters ABCDEF instead. The original KSNJFL goes back to the Bardot Code (before ASCII). Now you know. 😁

  26. One of the top priorities of my #1 "Bucket List" is to complete tribute album to one of my all-time favorite artists & ultimate inspirations Frank Zappa. Yeah I know, his music isn't for everybody and falls smack dab in the fringes in far end edges of the catagory of "acquired tastes", but I simple LOVE IT, and I find the challenges of even coming relatively close to understanding how to play/perform it keeps my "chops" up and helps keep me young and alive. My original goal was to get a band together to play this stuff with me, but I gave up trying to do that over about 20 years ago, because I had such a hard time finding likeminded musicians with the resolve that could, or even willing to even try that weren't already working, without paying them exorbitant sums of money it would take to get them to leave the KILLA BANDS they were already employed in. So, never being one to not finish what I started, instead of giving up, I decided, no matter how long it takes me, I WILL GET IT DONE even if I have to play/perform all the parts and tracks myself. . Sooooo..... 25-30 years later, give or take about 15, I decided to start laying down tracks in SONAR.. And then "Cakewalk by Bandlab", and now.... I've been exporting from CbB and mixing tracks and stems in Bandlab Studio, and getting VERY GOOD results. 😵 As in this latest session of ZoMbiE WooF't Over the years I've managed to keep a forward-thinking 'young' attitude towards new technology, learning what it does and why, as well how to use and apply it, and making progress in compiling a growing and an ever expanding and refining collections of my favorite Zappa tunes. But still, not quite up to the highest bar, and not enough for a 2 album set, but still good enough to keep me go'in, keeps my chops up, and "Keep me Young", which is ALWAYS A GOOD THANG considering I believe I'm going to need another 225-to 275 years to complete this "Bucket List" 😂🤣✌ https://www.bandlab.com/band/band6873043074588134/zombie-woof-94a6338b-fbf68785

  27. SOLVED: By habit I never log on as admin and always use my user account on windows for security purposes. But this is not compatible with LABS. It stores the main files in the admin's account. Even trying to move files to my use account I could NOT get it to work. Re-installing everything in the admin account and just using that account I can now use LABS no problem!!! Thank you all for your help! 😀

  28. I agree, Fleer. SoundIron libraries are consistently high quality and really well scripted. I definitely find them to be much better scripted then 8Dio libraries and overall, produced with much greater attention to quality and detail. I've never bought a SoundIron library that disappointed me. They're definitely an "A list" sample developer IMO.

  33. I had a 303, a 606 and an 505, I was glad to move on, as particularly with drums, I prefer acoustic kit sounds. I can't ever see me using any samples or emulations of this generation of drum sounds. They are not attractive to me, but good on anyone who wants to use them.

  37. Bummer this week. My TK Audio BC-501 Stereo Bus Compressor stated acting funny. The left output was consistently 6-10db louder than the right. Since I feed this BC with a pair of L/R Tape emus I thought they were at fault. Swapped them out with known working units feed another Bus Compressor. No love with new tape emu son TK Audio and the old tape emus on the other Bus Compressor. I bought this used for about $664 out the door from ebay. It was manufactured in 2017 so I hope it's not too expensive to repair. Sent it off today. A brand new one is $1099.00 as is about all the 500 series stereo bus compressors (SSL is $1299).

  39. SampleTank is okay, but KONTAKT is in a completely different league. When I compare the first version of SampleTank I had maybe 20 years ago, and how KONTAKT has progressed during the same period, it's a very dramatic difference. When it comes to detailed samples and samples with various articulations where sophisticated scripting makes a major difference, it's an easy choice -- KONTAKT. Even if you're getting KONTAKT for the factory library and various developer freebies, it's still a much better option, IMO. Unless there's some monumental leap that brings it up to the level of KONTAKT, I think SampleTank 4 is the last version of SampleTank for me. I'd much rather use the hard drive space for KONTAKT libraries. I would only suggest SampleTank to someone who absolutely cannot afford KONTAKT and now, at $50 USD, it's a lot more compelling than at its typical sales price.

  40. Has anyone bothered to compare the savings of getting synths piecemeal (as they become available) or by waiting for a new version of a collection? I suspect that there's some savings but on the other hand you have access/usage of them in the meantime.

  42. the mouse wheel is your friend: shift+wheel = left <> right; crtl+wheel = up <> down; crtl+alt+wheel = enlarge <> shrink audio waveform; and alt+wheel = zoom centered on pointer. once you let those 4 methods become second nature then moving to where you need to, and zooming in and out becomes really fast,

  44. This is what I was going to say as well. You can see if your timing is out because all midi should be on the grid lines. But you guitar track will be visible as transient spikes that you will see if they are lined up. Take note that this will only work if you are using a proper ASIO driver. All other audio modes will be out of sync so it won’t be you but your system that is late.
