  1. Since I live in Canada I went with suppliers in Canada to save on shipping, customs, etc. I got the kit from Solo music gear. I change the nut to a Graphtech tusk nut and Tone Emporium 59 pickups. I could not get the pickups that came with the kit to be balanced volume wise to each other. But in any case the Tone Emporium ones were such a great upgrade in sound that it was a blessing in disguise. I like the black hardware. It complements the figured splatted maple well. I don't think they have this same kit with black hardware anymore. And maybe the new kits pickups are better than what I got in my kit 4 years ago. As @Starship Krupa, I used TruOil for the finish. I first filled the pores of the mahogany and applied many coats of TruOil. I actually went through the small bottle completely. The finish is great. I never thought it would be that easy to get such a great finish. I did a decal for the headstock and it stays in place underneath the TruOil. Most important: although I do have an old strat, an Ibanez and e few other guitars, I also still love to play and record with this guitar. I don't have an original Les Paul, so this one fills that void.

  2. I did the survey yesterday to ''shape the future of Plugin Boutique'' Most questions were about subscription...... Have you ever subscribed to a music production subscription? What would you like to be included if you subscribed to a music production subscription? how much would you pay per month for a subscription that offered the services you selected? Would you prefer to personalise the parts of the subscription you had access to (from the answers in the previous question), or just subscribe to everything? Would you rather subscribe to: I don't like subscriptions, because you only rent the product(s). Once you have problems with payments, or your bank/internet provider have a malfunctions, your screwed and you loose acces to your work/projects/samples and plugins. I can't afford this. Only Rent-to-own would be something to consider since that looks way more fair to me. Personally i don't like subscriptions. And i made that clear in filling this form. I encourage people to fill in the form as well. It takes only 2 minutes work, and afterwards you recieve the free coupon code for the plugin.

  3. Magix is offering the coreFX VolumeFormer audio effect plugin for Mac & Win as a free download until April 2nd (reg. $24.99). Magix describes the plugin as follows: "A pump effect without complicated sidechain routing that is created by rhythmically reducing and increasing the volume. The shape of the envelope, i.e., decrease and increase, as well as the modulation frequency, e.g., to match the beat, can be freely adjusted. This creates a gate or sidechain effect, which is frequently found in house and EDM as well as in rock and pop." Users of coreFX VolumeFormer can upgrade to the full suite for $59.99 USD instead of reg. $199 (70% off). Plug-in formats include AAX (64-bit), AU, VST2 and VST3. https://www.magix.com/us/music-editing/audio-plugin-union/corefx-volumeformer/

  6. Same Time Same Place I started this song a few years ago, back when I used BIAB for backing tracks. I found a really nice fingerpicking midi pattern which I edited a little, then added a melody on top and some strings on the bottom. 7. I'm in the middle of playing this, and if you're a fan of Portal-style platform/problem solver games like The Turing Test, Pneuma and Lightmatter, you'll love it. I find this type of game to be good "brain pushups." Edited to refer to a better deal found by @abacab.

  9. SoundPaint is 8Dio's own new plugin engine. 8Dio libraries were made for Kontakt and they are older. SoundPaint will be releasing a new string library in "several weeks, but not several months .." (comment from YouTube) and probably a lot more later, so if you like SoundPaint, you might want to wait.

  11. I just downloaded 36 free delay based effects from https://plugins4free.com/ There was a bunch I didn't download only because the GUI were just a little bit too simple, which I know is not a valid complaint, but they also got negative reviews. Not that many of the reviews on the site are worth reading either. But I felt these are probably the better ones any how. So now I will install them to my office computer and start testing and making notes. Here's a basic outline of what I will do. Anything I'm missing please do comment. 1. Easy to install 2.Manual 3.Easy to use as basic Delay = Time, Feedback and Wet/dry 4.Sync 5. Readout for time ( ms) if sync is off. 6.Analog toggle, in other words option to choose clean or harmonic content. 7.Midi learn for controls 8.Special features - multi tap, reverse, LFO etc. 9. Hi or lo pass filters 10.CPU hog or friendly , not sure how to test this yet, ideas? And I know there's more out there so I'll keep looking but any input is welcome. The one I did on compressors took me 2 months. https://youtu.be/PLBxSGozIwo Here's what my download folder has. I even re down loaded ones I already have so I can keep an alphabetical list somehow. I think there's a few reverbs I grabbed in here as well for my next project free reverbs.

  12. Here is a fictitious little story about a young man who notices an old man sitting alone on a bench. After pondering this for a while, he goes over to the old man and engages in conversation. The result (since I'm writing the story) is that both come out of the conversation feeling better than before the conversation. My most thorough critic (my wife) said that she thought the song was sad. However, that was not my intent. The intent is that both subjects of the story are happy. That is particularly true for the young gentleman, as he got some insight as to where he might be headed in his life. Yes, it is not really the Blues but I couldn't think of how to classify the genre --- sorry. I have worked on several versions of this song and and in frustration with them all, I am posting this particular version. Therefore, I would be most appreciative of any crit.'s, comments, suggestions, etc. Thanks!! LONELY OLD MAN https://www.soundclick.com/artist/default.cfm?bandid=963481 NOTE ON RE-MIX: I have completed a major re-mix of this song incorporating the suggestions that have been made below. Unfortunately when I went to substitute the re-mix on my SoundClick site, rather that just replacing the song it deleted the entire post! When I ask SoundClick support if the post could be restored they said ---"unfortunately, no- sorry"! I guess it must have been "operator error" and have to assume the responsibility for the deletion. I have just re-posted the song on SoundClick. As stated above, I have incorporated most if not all of the suggestions made in the comments below. I hope that this version is better. Certainly, I am much more comfortable with it! Thank y'all very much for the input - it is very much appreciated. I am still open for more suggestions if you have them.

  18. The biggest issue with AI is the amount of data that is needed for it to be effective, and more importantly the fact that the results are so incredibly skewed to the data that you give it... which of course means, a lot more data, and a lot more varied data. Personally I think AI in music has huge potential, but as far as the Cakewalk team is concerned I'm almost certain we couldn't spare the resources to collect enough quality data to get anything useable (well, not unless you'd all be happy to sacrifice any Cakewalk updates for a year or two). And even if you consider BandLab as a whole, who you could argue has access to a lot of material to use as source material for learning, is it varied enough to become usable in all genres? Here's a good example of not only how AI works, but also how inaccurate it can be - even when given 1000's of examples. BTW - if you're into AI in music, or even basic music DSP, this guy really does know his stuff - it's worth watching the whole series. But having watched hours of these videos, it's clear that you can get impressive results, but in order to do so you need a vast amount of good quality, and preferable pre-labelled data.

  22. Yes. Thorough QA testing costs money. I used to do it and made pretty good bucks at it. Host/plug-in compatibility is fraught with issues. Witness the current state of CbB. If it's crashing on you, 90% or more of the time, it's a plug-in compatibility issue. CbB still has bugs (as does all software), but they're in the realm of features not functioning correctly in certain cases rather than crashing all by itself. It doesn't even necessarily mean that they didn't test with a given host, it could be that they don't want to commit to guaranteeing support for it. The more hosts they guarantee support for, the greater the likelihood that they'll need to revisit the code. Mixcraft, Waveform, Mixbus, Bitwig, MuLab, Audacity, Cantabile and MAGIX Movie Studio are also missing from the list of supported hosts. Whenever this issue is raised, there are always plenty of other hosts that are omitted. It's life with a DAW that's not widely advertised and covered in the magazines.

  29. I think this comment is a bit reductionist. For example, there is more at stake than individuals as individual "just" becoming obsolete. While that might be a small part of it, today's AI revolution is more of a quantum leap for all of humanity taken as a whole. I agree, but I would posit that the recent changes go far beyond changes in degree and and quality. To me they are quantum changes that once introduced and fully embedded in the fabric of society will change how humans use their brains. Yes, the inventions of the alphabet, writing, moveable type, etc. also changed us, but changes stemming from a reliance on AI have the potential to be even more cataclysmic. I am not posting my example of what "race to the bottom" means to me out of deference to Milton. It stems from a professional interest in how human communication has been transformed by technology. I have saved the draft in case there is ever a coffee house discussion of the possible implications of AI there and I feel I can make a useful contribution to the discussion.

  35. If you really think about it, John came up with this idea after decades as a sound designer and former KORG employee, and more recently with his own PluginGuru "label" that has produced sound packs and presets for many leading synths. Unify is apparently the product of all the features he wished he had access to inside of one program that did not exist. So he hired Shane Dunne, PhD Computer Science, to do the programming. https://getdunne.com/ Shane took John's specs and developed Unify using JUCE, a framework for audio application and plug-in development. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JUCE They work together to test and get the features working correctly. A very small team with big ideas! I guess you could say that Unify likely represents John's mind and years of sound design experience in code. That probably explains its depth, and supposedly its appeal to MIDI geeks...

  38. It's been a weird weekend. Had a terrible friday and great saturday. Aweful to have a close friend call you that they might be dying very soon (f@#$k cancer), and a day later you are with all the entire group, all the children and just having a great day. On top that my key broke off in my lock of the front door and my favorite sports team lost. But the jam went well. So...I don't know man...overall screw this weekend.

  40. I break my vocals into the lines of the lyrics. Each song is different but that doesn't make it any more work to open a lot of clips. I zoom in so I don't like too many note blobs on my screen. I have just come up with a huge timesaver, Custom Short cuts keys. I had never used these 2 before and they are really easy to reach. Just put the clip in focus before using the keys. Z= open regional effect Melodyne X = Render regional effect. Close your eyes and I'll kiss you, Tomorrow I'll miss you; clip 1 Remember I'll always be true. clip 2 And then while I'm away, I'll write home ev'ry day, clip 3 And I'll send all my loving to you. clip 4

  42. Thanks Tom, much appreciated! This is why I come to this forum; I can't get this kind of help any other way. I've learned so much from this experience. As for the ending, I too often fade out during a chorus or solo, so I decided to just let this come to a halt, in keeping with the subject matter.

  43. It's right there: because he's "not interested in the new BandLab stuff." That's why I asked him what "new BandLab stuff" he was talking about. Such things wouldn't occur to you and me, who know that while Cakewalk includes a couple of features that enable interoperability with BandLab's site, it's easy to forget that they exist. There are still veteran SONAR users who are confused about the relationship between Cakewalk the program and BandLab's other DAW's. He also said "the Cakewalk people have abandoned me," which suggests that he might not know that there are no "Cakewalk people" anymore, and haven't been for over 5 years.

  44. This is a biggy. How many instruments sound awesome, but have a lame preset browser and no way to favorite? Too many just rely on the OS file manager. Unify lets you favorite presets, add categories, add notes, and more. It’s simple to do this for any instrument, even if it hasn’t been “Unified”. If your reason for not getting Unify is your DAW can do it, then you don't understand Unify. It’s all about the workflow. Sure, you could do everything Unify does in a DAW, but Unify makes things easy. I like to use it to quickly set up MIDI routing which can be a pain. It does so much more than just layering different instruments. It's kinda like a DAW in a plugin.
