  1. I have from the start of the BandLab era been vocal on this topic. Not going to jump in with anything that's already been said. A thing about this that continues to baffle me is why people seem to think that a bunch of random users on a public forum would be able to answer this. We're not privy to any insider information. Any software company can go out of business. Steinberg, Presonus, MAGIX, Cockos, Tracktion (has done at least once), Acoustica, all of them. When companies go out of business, they sell off their assets. In the case of software companies, their intellectual property (software code base, patents, trademarks) gets liquidated. This is how Cakewalk got to its current favorable status. If BandLab should decide to tank the whole Cakewalk experiment, they will likely liquidate the IP and it will live on. While I feel the pain; who likes to pay for something that shows up a week later as the Pluginboutique freebie of the month? Happened with me a few times. I paid for Ozone Essentials, which today seems crazy, it's being given away left and right. If I had waited 30 days, the $20 I spent on BYOME would have dropped to free with my vouchers. It's all in the game. I got to mess with BYOME for a month, which is a lot of value. And the guys at Unfiltered deserve some of my hard-earned for making such a great bit of software. They deserve more than $20, actually. My take on it, as someone who coughed up for a SONAR license about 20 years ago and then started back up in the BandLab era is that (y)our license fee(s) weren't thrown away, they went to keep the company afloat long enough to survive to be picked up by another company (who is of course delivering on updates in a big way). Also, your copy of SONAR Platinum came with other software that I'd love to have but that money literally can't buy. Now we can collaborate in native format with anyone with an internet connection and a Windows system. I'd say that there are worse deals.

  2. I think I may have misunderstood the original question. To get Cakewalk to shut down, click on the "X" in the upper right corner, just like other Windows programs. Alternately, go to the File menu, and all the way down at the bottom, Exit. Select that and Cakewalk will close. If you wish to know whether it has continuity, set your DMM to the lowest resistance setting and lightly touch the probes to the surface of your monitor. If the readout goes to zero, or within a couple of ohms, it has continuity. If the readout doesn't change, there is no continuity. This shouldn't be an issue because digital audio workstations are poor conductors anyway. The best you can hope for is a built-in metronome.

  6. All things being equal, CbB (aka Cakewalk by BandLab) was previously known as Cakewalk SONAR Platinum which was around for over 20 years. When Meng acquired the Cakewalk assets he chose to make it free and it's highly unlikely he would ever close it (in yours or my lifetime). However, nothing is certain and those who love Reaper or Studio One or Cubase or any other DAW, could ask the same question and the answer is the same. Anything is possible.

  7. I do a lot of location recordings. Music, mostly. I've often nervously wondered what it would take to make my system fall over as my mobile rig is pretty humble. Specs are: HP ProBook6565b (i5 1.6Ghz) laptop 8GB Ram 1 x SSD Kingston 400 for OS 1 x internal Seagate HHD 1TB for Audio Win 10 Pro. RME Fireface800 Asio driver @256Samples Buffer Recording done at 48k, 24bit. I just finished tracking three choirs for a project and it was all recorded in layers on location, totaling 238 audio tracks (pic attached). Recording was done 2 tracks at a time with no plugins on any tracks. Each of the 10 subgroups of voices was routed through an Aux with Breverb running for on the fly playback mixes, so that's 10 x Auxes and 10 x Breverb. Well, the bottom line is the system had a few dropouts towards the last session when I was jumping around a bit too quickly between takes, but it never had an audio dropout or even a pop or crackle during tracking. It felt solid and would probably be solid for another 20 or 30 tracks, if not more. I may well clone the tracks to see how far I can still push it. Disk performance hovered between 15% and 50% depending on the amount of tracks in that section of the production. I thought the info might come in handy to someone, somewhere It's good to know CbB is up there (and in my opinion ABOVE) some of the "pro" DAWs..

  14. OTS Evolution Update (not a deal) Today we've released a much-needed update to all our Evolution guitar libraries. What's new: The update fixes a bug that was causing the strumming patterns to occasionally play an 8th or 16th note late in certain DAWs. While we were at it, we added a new guitar cabinet model to the collection: a vintage '60s Danelectro DM10, complete with the original 8" Jensen speaker. You can find it on the list of cabinet options as "1x8 60s Danny 10". Our recently released Evolution Bluegrass Banjo sample library already features the improvements in this update. How to download the update: Option 1: The latest versions are available in the downloads section of your account. You can redownload the ZIP files for each entire library and swap out the existing libraries' folders with the new ones. As long as the locations of the libraries are the same, Kontakt should still be able to find the libraries. Option 2: If you would prefer to download just the updated resource files, you can download this* ZIP file containing the NKR files for all the libraries. With Kontakt closed, replace the NKR files with the corresponding new ones. *Note: zip file is 2.8GB Of course, if you have any questions, please contact our support. Enjoy!

  24. Hatstand's flattener preset. This is a pro channel eq preset which you can use to check if your mix has any issues. It won't sound nice, I guarantee, but it will tell you whether your mix is close to having no eq problems. Stick this (temporarily) on your master bus or on an aux send going nowhere and whack a spectrum analyser on it. Your mix over the entire track should look something like this; i.e. close to flat across the spectrum. (let the whole mix play not just 30 seconds of it) This preset is based on several reference tracks both individually and together. It should highlight frequency issues pretty quickly. Whilst completely flat is an impossible dream, anything close to this using the preset should have it sounding darn good once you disable it. Extremely useful if you have deficiencies across the spectrum with your hearing but it is (as always) no substitute for feel, just a guide to where there might be over emphasis. Yes it will look weird ( you will no doubt be thinking wtf is this about) but it is the best I can do with four bands, but hopefully it will be a good sense check for you. As an added bonus, it will give you an idea what the different pro channel eq profiles do. This is based on the G type profile but switch to the other types such as S type, Pure and Hybrid to see the difference. (HINT: it wont be flat) Watch closely and you should hopefully see fundamentals , resonances, and harmonics. I used Izotope Insight but other analysers are available... save in Cakewalk Core>Cakewalk Content>Pro Channel presets (probably on your C drive) edit: for those of you that asked, without the preset enabled your mix should aim to look something like this, but it is much more difficult to spot anomalies as it is not a flat response curve. Any questions\comments let me know As Paul Young once sang "Wherever I lay my Hat, that's my Hatstand" Hatstands Flattener.pcp

  27. https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/spring-morning Spring Morning: this is a song I wrote 20 years ago, but never actually recorded properly. It is supposed to capture the feeling of the first true spring morning after a long cold winter, where you stand outside in the early morning light, looking towards the sunrise, and realize it’s not quite as cold anymore. It’s a nice feeling. from the new bats brew album "Elemental"

  28. Here's one I'm trying to finish up and could use some help on. First time recording with my DY-77 Yairi , first time trying to use cb-1 headphones for mixing. I keep going back and forth between phones and monitors and no longer trust my ears. It's pretty minimal , drums/bass , 3 acoustic tracks and SI elec. piano thru arp. Thanks for the listen . mark New link further down. Sorry ..

  30. Not sure it evoked "light speed" to me, but maybe there is a sort of serene quality to it (warp 1 I mean). The beat under it all made me of Pink Floyd (not a bad thing a t'all). Really liked the bass line (the whole thing really, but really cool bass line). 👍's for sure. t

  34. Sure but it requires a bit of work. In RegEdit look under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for entries like forgeXXX where XXX is the version of Sound Forge you have (I have 12 so it's forge120). There should be several entries for various file types. Here's what I have: Each one has a shell entry and under that an Open and a command. Inside the command the default entry is what Window's uses to launch the app. Change that command to have the extra parameters you want passed in. Make sure to leave the "%1" in quotes If you do this right I think launching files from the explorer should do the right thing. But this kind of file association and registry stuff breaks very easily and can just not work at all. You may have to change how exactly the file is associated with Sound Forge in order to get it to go through these entries. You may have to change the entry for say .wav to directly launch Sound Forge with the right arguments. To be honest I wouldn't recommend Sound Forge as the default for audio files, I'd pick something that is a better audio player. But you can specify optional command line arguments for Explorer launched files.

  45. I was introduced to it at my local music store where I hung out. Prior to that I'd only read about it in magazines, although I'd been exposed to Roland's proprietary interconnect scheme so I got the concept. I had one keyboard with the Roland interface but nothing to connect it to, and was shopping for a second one when Roland announced they'd be dropping their design in favor of MIDI. I had no MIDI-enabled hardware of my own, so I convinced my buddy at the music store to let me hook up every MIDI-equipped synthesizer in the shop. We had six synths going off one keyboard with me in the middle of it all happily jamming away - until the owner came out and told us to STFU. Apparently, not all the customers there that day appreciated the momentousness of the occasion. Some were just there for clarinet reeds. To be honest, I did not see the full potential of MIDI at first. There were no MIDI interfaces for computers yet. For me it was just a way to play piano and strings at the same time. That all changed with Cakewalk 1.0, the reason I bought my first MIDI interface.
