  1. I wouldn't even begin to be able to quantify the new, free features we have added since Scaler 2, so whilst I'm always on the hunt for criticism that helps us improve and see things from a different perspective I wouldn't agree with you there. As for the extra content, our users demand it, and I am sick of seeing chord packs here and there which many people spend hard earned money on and get nothing out of. I am hopeful our users don't and that's because of the stuff we put in there. Not sure what that it is but it doesn't sound good! I can see your point that's fair enough. As the Creative Director at Scaler it's my role to decide what goes in and what doesn't. That's kind of how we develop it rather than an overall strategy, it's done on feel and need. I only make decisions on Scaler when I am using it as a writing tool on a project which I am emotionally invested in. Moving forward your correct in that I am wanting a more complete song writing tool that does more, but that doesn't abandon it's raison d'être which is to identify scales and keys and offer me an insight into those moods and help me build a track from there. The audio detection in 2.9 is much, much better that what it previously was. Maybe that may allay your concerns of abandonment towards chord and scale analysis. Besides, maybe I am not as naturally gifted a musician as you but for me it does the job - that will only get better. Thanks for making us think anyways. 🙂

  6. Wavesequencer Hyperion Releases 1.52 released 04/26/24 This release features a major update of patch scanning logic and extra functionality for patch management. Clicking the spanner button in the patch browser swithces the meta-data view to to the patch list tools panel. Using this panel you can select multiple patches and modify any of their meta data/tags, move a set of patches into a sub folder of the top level patch directory, export a set of files into a 'patch set' file - this process will automatically gather any referenced sample files and include them - so long as patches being added are either in the top level folder, or one level down in one of the subfolders. Additionally you can optionally enable the subfolder and UUID info columns in the patch browser (useful for confirming moving your patches into a sub folder) - the tags info column is now un-selected/invisible by default, since it's not really that necessary as you have the filter buttons which represent the same information, but you can always turn that back on. The patch scanning works from the 'top directory' and includes scans of folders one level down to include in the list. By default new patches will be saved into the top level folder - which will have a new default location one level above 'Factory Patches' (when you launch Hyperion, it will automatically reset the top level folder if it was previously set to 'Factory Patches' - which was the previous default). This sub folder scheme means you can re-save a factory patch, and it will be shown twice in the list.. so you can edit without concern of losing the original patch. The copied patch has a new UUID on saving to ensure it also gets listed. So there's much less of chance of name clashing - since all patch packs and factory patches are in sub-folders. If you want to clean up your top level folder contents, you'll be able to move patches into your own 'collection' sub folder.. but you can still keep the original 'collection' name.. renaming the collection tag is optional. You can also rename patches directly - but only one at a time. If you select multiple patches, the Name check box in the tools area becomes un-selectable. Any moved patches or re-written patches (due to meta-data changes) will have the 'favorite' status preserved. 'Favourite' status is local to your machine - exported/imported patches don't keep that information. You can also now set a default 'collection' type in the settings panel - useful if you are developing a patch pack, so you don't have to type it in every time (even though you can always fix the patches later with the new tools). The default collection name is 'User Patches'. Please note that it may take a minute to re-scan your patches to populate the patch list at first launch following this update. Theia Releases 1.09 released 04/26/24 This update adds support for subfolder scanning of patches and auto-import of downlaoded patch packs - the default patch directory is now /Wavesequencer_Theia/Patches/ instead of previously being /Wavesequencer_Theia/Patches/FactoryPatches. If you change the top level folder Theia will scan all files in that folder, and all directories one level below.

  10. https://nusofting.com/fertile#sosir NUSofting Sosir is a new free experimental freeze delay plugin for macOS, and Windows that lets you create bowed sounds from any source. The plugin consists of two stages: a digital virtual bow and the delay line. The first uses a modeled bow section with four unique timbres (mellow tone, stereo slow, mono dark, stereo chorus). Each gives the sound its character with adjustable lowpass and highpass filters, bow dry/wet, and sub-octave doubling. Then, you have the delay section with time control, ranging from 40ms to 2000ms. There is also feedback, a LFO with depth and rate control, an a built-in reverb. In the last stage, you also have a dry/wet mix control. Do not confuse it with the bow wet/dry mix, both are independent of each other NUSofting Sosir is available now as a free download. It runs as a VST3 and AU plugin on macOS (native Apple Silicon + Intel) and Windows.

  11. If we're going to be really candid, the Spitfire co founders were always proudly arrogant, and pretentious in their early days. It was very much on brand for them to alienate people as sport. But Christian cultivated a much more likeable, approachable persona in his YouTube videos in the past several years when he realized the importance of growing the Spitfire brand. With the exception of his infamous tweet, I thought Christian really did well with the video format. I'd say he was probably better with the medium than any other sample developer I can think of (with apologies to my sample developer friends). I think this video is a bit meandering. But Christian is certainly capable of doing masterful YouTube videos for his business. I think it's been a factor in growing Spitfire to be one of the biggest players in the industry.

  14. I think Scaler offers amazing value and flexibility. Yes, it does have a lot of features for the paint by numbers approach to production, but there is plenty for the advanced user to unpack as well. I think the updates have been excellent and will definitely purchase version 3.

  15. I come from the olden days of Scaler v1. I was more than happy to pay for the v2 upgrade, and I'll be more than happy to pay for v3 when it arrives. There is absolutely no reason that I can't use v2.9 the way I used v1.x. You haven't taken any of that away. The tons of new features you add to each major version before releasing the next major upgrade is astonishing. Super good value for the money. I had Captain Plugins and upgraded to Captain Epic Plugins.. Didn't use CP. Don't use CEP. I have Orb Producer and Orb Composer. I not only couldn't get into using them, I uninstalled them because of the crazy MIDI crap they added in the background, but didn't give you any control over (at least I never found out how). But Scaler? It was and remains a super useful tool to me. Right up there with Gig Performer and Studio One Pro. As soon as I heard about v2.9, I started pinging Plugin Boutique this morning every hour or so, looking for its release. I'm on Central European Time, so it was a few hours after I got up and going before it showed up. Thanks for all of your hard and thoughtful work! Now, I've just got to get my arms (mind) around Scaler EQ. The added features in the v1.1.1 update, like the sidechaining and input and output limiters, also seem really useful.

  24. I hung out with him at his California house several times (he lived close) trying the help get some electronics working. I didn’t know what to expect but it turned out he was just a dad/husband in a T-shirt and shorts trying to get his son to do his god-damn homework before heading out. LOL! No rockstar pomp. Really nice guy and his wife too. I tried to not be a crazy fan and he was appreciative of that. We talked Mellotron (50% plate reverb, double tracked and keep the fingers and faders moving), MB mixing wishes (louder drums) among other things. What little he said about the other band members was all positive although he alluded to the Graeme Edge conflict. I missed Hayward and Lodge visiting him by a day. Oh, I should have called you! But a great guy to hang with and talk music and science/space. He and Ian McDonald will be remembered for what they brought to music. RIP Mike.

  30. To give you an example, these are the frequency response graphs of my studio (top) and my office (bottom). As you can see, my studio has a huge dip at around 250Hz-300Hz (possibly a standing wave), and another at around 3KHz. My office on the other hand, has a huge bump at 200Hz, and a dip at around 800Hz. The ARC plugin has done a pretty good job of sorting these issues out (the AFTER curve). It's worth mentioning that it's the combination of both the speakers AND the room that give these responses. You could have the best speakers in the world, and have a really uneven response if your room isn't correctly treated. If I did a mix in my office without ARC2, I'd be turning down 200Hz like crazy, only to find it's totally missing when I played it on another system - the opposite would be true if I did my mix in my studio without ARC2.

  32. $0.00 – FREE!! It is compatible with the FULL version of Kontakt 6 (tested with v6.5.2.) We have created a virtual bass to be used in any project. This virtual bass tries to get the real sound of a bass, taking into account the human factor. For this reason, this bass has been recorded using round robin layers and pick articulations (up and down) controlled by key switches. It has a three band EQ, configured to modify the sound where this particular instrument requires. This instrument has a huge note range, from A-2 to G-3, which is really good for some genres, like rock and metal. https://oomindstudio.com/index.php/hardy-bass/

I do checkout new features and workflow on un-activated copy until proper licenses will be available. From the last set of features, I love that you can change custom display scaling independently of Windows, right in the program without restart. While it says "experimental", it seems to be very stable. Great that mouse cursor items were fixed too! I wonder how hard it would be to have a custom font setting to "thicken" text/fonts without touching display scaling? To me fonts are a bit too fine.

  34. https://github.com/PhysicsDptAngers/polyUAnalog/ The polyUAnalog is a new DIY open-source Synthesizer displayed last week at SynthFest France 2024. The developers, Matthieu and Dominique, finished the code for it shortly before the event started, so it wasn’t in 100% perfect condition; it was more of a working prototype. The core uses a mix of analog and digital components. The version on display had ten analog voices, each based on the AS3397 synth voice chip, known from the Oberheim Matrix 1000. The chip is ideal for synth projects as it offers an entire synth voice on the chip, including two analog oscillators, a filter, and VCA. Interestingly, you can freely configure the number of voices. You can create an analog synth with 10, 20, or more voices. It’s also possible to build just a mono synth out of the project. According to the developer, the maximum voice is estimated to be 120 voices. Then, the digital part is carried out by a Raspberry Pi located on each voice. This tunes the voices so that they are always in tune. Plus, it generates LFOs, envelopes, or any additional digital synthesis. In the SFF 2024 prototype, the Raspi also generated a noise generator. They are currently developing additional board elements that can, for example, host digital effects. Here is the video from SynthFest France 2024.

  38. Controversy aside. I have no idea if Christian cashed out his investment in Spitfire or if he remains a silent partner, but one would assume that considering that, at least until recently, he owned half of a business that generates more than 20 million pounds annually and has a net worth in the tens of millions of pounds, he's easily able to fund this new venture for as long as he sees fit. Plus, there's not too many people in the sample development business that know how to create a successful brand in this business at the level he does. I think it's probably just a question of what his goals are for this new venture. It does tell you a lot about what he was responsible for at Spitfire (based on what he's doing now and what Spitfire hasn't been doing since he left), and we can see that a lot of other orchestral sample developers have followed Henson's path in doing the freebies to get attention and bring new future customers in the fold. I think some folks naively see that as altruism -- just as they saw Pianobook as altruism, but it really isn't. It's putting future customers in the pipeline and was a very wise strategy -- but one that it appears his partner at Spitfire wasn't totally on board with, or hasn't found the right person to lead the effort in Christian's absence. The Labs+ teaser was a great example of fantastically bad marketing communications. A sub brand that gives away free product is silent for the better part of a year and its first communication is a cryptic message that tries to excite its target audience that they're now going to have to pay for future product. Really, really bad idea. Even if they were going to launch this new Labs non-free product, that isn't a good way to do it.

  41. Trying to imagine what the sister in the photo might consider "good" music made me remember the "beautiful music" radio format that started to die out in the early 80's (which was....hmmm....now that I think of it, right around the time that the "classic rock" format was born. Coincidence?). My mom (b. 1937, "Mad Men" generation), who is now more into smooth jazz and mellower contemporary pop R'n'B stuff, LOVED that format in her late 30's and early 40's. Bless her heart, I thank her to this day (out loud and via our favorite messaging program, Telegram) for the two cultural channels that she kept open my entire childhood and teen years: any (non-pr0n) book I wanted was mine, either as a gift or via library, AND as soon as I got in the car, control of the radio was mine. Hit the programmed button for at first the Boss Radio station, and later album rock FM. The only time she drew the line on the book thing was when I wanted an Alice Cooper bio (she thought Alice-who may be more politically conservative than she is now for all I know-was too culturally subversive, although as a retired teacher, "School's Out" was a turn-it-up). (send me mum healing mojo; she had a fall a couple weeks ago and is in hospital hoping to get home to her husband soon)

  46. EDIT: Not an issue. Thought I had restarted Sonar (as it says "Requires Restart"), but I may have just closed/reopened the project. After a complete Sonar restart the note blobs scale as well. Nice! Noticed one glitch with the Custom Scaling. When you go above 100% (at least on my 3840x2160) the PRV note names get cut off. Here is 100%: Here is 105% - the top of the note names get cut off. Maybe the note blobs need to scale as well?

So when I started school the next year she sent us to public school. My wife ( and many of my friends) went to a Catholic school run by nuns and they all loved it. Talk very well of the good times they had there. But that school my brother went too..... wasn't the same school. Or run the same way.

  48. Here's a clip I find interesting, must have been just after Days of Future Passed came out, they seem to be on a European TV show, and from what Pinder is saying to them, the audience must have been rude to them before the tape started rolling. When he asks them how many people can make their dickie-birds go 'round, for the non-Brits, "dickie-bird" is a slang term for....well, say it without the "ie bird" part. Kinda clashes with their mellow hippie image. Anyway, they do pretty well with "Peak Hour," Tuesday Afternoon," and "Nights in White Satin" from the new-at-the-time album. When John Lodge was still able to hit those wailing high notes.
