  4. Meh, is almost always a deal... I only remember one oopsie with an update so far. Once you have the MCompleteBundle, these updates often give you more to play with. I always install everything but the AAX versions, so the quick cleanup removed 264 plugins this go round, then reinstalled everything in less than a minute. Gotta appreciate installers that can get everything done that quickly.

  6. I remember when Cakewalk would go around the country and give tutorials and show off their new products in music stores. This is how I first became familiar with Z3TA and Project 5. They came to the Sam Ash music store just outside of Philadelphia, PA and did their presentation, we had a good time meeting folks in the area that used Sonar and we swapped phone numbers and ideas.

  7. https://www.kvraudio.com/product/reflex-dynamic-range-meter-by-reflex-acoustics Monitor your dynamic range across the frequency spectrum. The Reflex Dynamic Range Meter helps you visualize the dynamics in your signal, by showing the real-time loudness distribution of 5-millisecond grains of sound. The spectrum is also broken up into eight frequency bands, each with its own analysis display. Features: Loudness distribution of 5ms grains over the last 3 or 15 seconds, charted relative to mean loudness. Colored bars for Peak (green), 90th percentile (blue), 10th percentile (pink) and Low (red). Scrolling waveform display of last 1 second, at 5-millisecond resolution (click display to freeze waveforms). Mid and Side modes, and a readout of side level relative to mid for each frequency band. LUFS meter showing short-term (i.e. 3-second trailing) perceived loudness. Two filter modes: "Eco." is lighter on CPU, but introduces visible artifacts in the waveform displays for the eight frequency bands; Linear Phase ("Lin.") has a very clean band separation, albeit with variable latency across the lower-frequency bands, meaning that transient peaks no longer align across the displays. Technical notes: Available in VST3 format for PC, and VST3 & AU formats for Mac. AAX support coming soon. Requires a compatible Digital Audio Workstation or other plugin host.

  13. Welcome to the forum. If you can hear the metronome, you've got this thing licked! 😁 Seriously, it is deep program and somewhat complicated for new users, especially if you're not familiar with some of the terms. Forum member John Vere (AKA Cactus Music) has a series of video tutorials on You Tube, as have many others. There is a Help file with the program and a PDF that can be downloaded from Cakewalk. It's >1600 pages. Besides learning the program, there is the hardware side of recording and mastering music. If you're serious about this vocation, or avocation, having decent gear will pay off in fewer headaches and better-quality sound.

The first 7 songs here were done using Equator 2, Plasmonic, and Unify on the Rise 2. Starbirth Music All of the songs there were done in Cakewalk and Sonar over the years. -- Martin

  19. Wallet Blues by Kluane Gross Jan 25 2024- https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=14719703 My Grandson took up songwriting and is learning the acoustic guitar. His dad just past away a few weeks ago and we put this song together so he could play it for him as he was slipping away from us. Not exactly what you might think as appropriate, but if you knew his Dad Jason you would get it. A guy who's favorite Christmas song was Grandma Got run over by a Reindeer. Well they played lots of his favorite music that day, The Band, Allmand Brothers and the Dead. Jason was a musician himself and was a walking encyclopedia of all things connected to those bands. He only liked Country if it used a Les Paul and was corny. So Kluane had no idea yet about putting chords to a song and I just came up with the progression and we had something that worked within a half hour. I wanted the chords to be easy for him to play. So it's in C. The next day I came up with the Band in a Box idea to see what I could come up with for the style and groove. I also thought it would be a good tool for him to use is he progresses. He picked this one and I quickly figured out how to enter the chords and create an arrangement. Of course it sort of sucked so I exported as a midi file into Cakewalk and proceeded to obliterate all but the drums and there was a guitar chord track assigned to the Lounge Lizard with the Phaser turned on. But the style he picked didn't have a Pedal Steel which this song was crying out for. SO I simple went back and changed the style to one that had the pedal steel and actually learned I could drag and drop it from BiaB directly to Cakewalk. I edited the bad chords in Melodyne, thank goodness I just upgraded to the full version which does chords. I redid the bass with a real bass that I converted to midi and the Ample bass, I added a piano and then a acoustic guitar and the Tele lead. I haven't polished the vocals at all yet so I apologize for the performance and lack of clarity of the lyrics. We had 1 day to get it posted. Here's a screen shot of the console. As I did this I was thinking it would be cool if everyone shared this shot when posting a song. I might even help troubleshoot issues with mixes.

  23. Thanks everyone, I'm digging in and finding this program is what I want but it definitely is gonna take some learning to get up to speed. I know you all are gonna laugh, I've come here after using Audacity as my main DAW. It's been good at what I use it for but doesn't have what I need to deliver the final product. I'm a singer/songwriter and have been and will probably continue using it in the capacity I've been using it for. I have it on my main desktop and use it now as a simple recorder as I start to write. This way if I do something I like I can return and expand on it, really don't need any bells or whistles for that. Since I am greener than grass I will have some guest ions from time to time

  33. Welcome Roger , There is a "massive" online documentation file you can download . I'm sure the help menue can lead you to online documentation , instead of downloading it . Honestly , I would just google Cakewalk by Bandnlab basics or getting started. There is also a tutorial section on "this" forum you can look through. Several members here do Very helpful Youtube videos for this Daw. Half the time if I Google a question about a technical problem I'm having , it will link me straight to this forum to a post about my problem. Best of luck .. mark

  36. it's not the size that matters. um, well for some things it does 😉 , but more the concern should be: what happens if the disk breaks down or something in the complex microelectronics or software does something wrong? corruption on large storage systems is certainly possible when using single hard disks and SSD. so it might not matter until a bunch of old nff files somehow get mixed into your latest client delivery files during a disk optimize process or simply bad sectors and memory leaks resulting in bad writes, or power outage causing write caching to do the wrong thing -- resulting in many hours of clean up and recovery or worse sharing them in that condition. nothing wrong with an old workflow which keeps extraneous files cleaned up and projects etc backed up and recoverable.

  38. Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to be an apologist; in my perfect world, Sonar will get comprehensive theme editing so that we can have skeuomorphic images or flat as our hearts desire. As I said, "whether we like it or not." My preference is for at least a slight bit of shading, it gives the eye something to "grab." I was just musing out loud about why the trend may have happened. I use iOS devices, and I remember when Apple dumped iOS' skeuomorphic look in favor of a flat look. It's been a long time for that, and a whole new generation of people who don't even remember what iOS looked like back then. It remains to be seen whether the current flat and dark trend in UI's will stick, or whether at some point skeuomorphic and shaded will be a cool retro look. In the meantime, Mixbus ain't so expensive. 😏 Also, I meant to caution the OP about putting too much time and effort into learning Theme Editor. The feature will not be included in Cakewalk Sonar. Considering how many themes I created, how much time and effort went into them, you can imagine how I feel about that. Theme Editor became a pastime all its own, and a valuable one, as it really made me up my pixel editing game.

  39. FWIW, You do NOT want to disable Hyper-Threading. That was necessary many years back... with the very first implementation. Hasn't been necessary since Steinberg and other developers caught up (shortly after).

  40. I remember as a kid staying up 'til midnight (Chicago time) on Saturday nites just 'cause I loved the show's theme song. If I was able to stay awake I could hear the other acts. We had no way to record music or the TV so besides AM radio the only way to hear/see music was getting in front of a TV at just the right time. It made going to church the next morning pretty ruff. We did not have a turntable yet.

  43. In order to do it (that is, make graphical changes to the theme rather than just color changes), you must use Theme Editor along with a graphics editor like Paint.NET, Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro. The best resource for learning how to use Theme Editor is The Young Lady's Illustrated Primer to Theming Cakewalk. Once you have Theme Editor set up, when you find the image(s) you wish to alter, you can launch your graphics editor directly from Theme Editor, make the change(s) and then save it back to Theme Editor. Theme Editor stores the color settings and images in proprietary files with the .STH extension. Near as I can tell, the step sequencer buttons in SONAR 7 don't look a heck of a lot different from the standard ones in the current Cakewalk. If you read the bit in The Young Lady's Illustrated Primer you'll see the result of some serious spelunking I did in regard to figuring out which of the 12 cells of the Step Button image go with what button states in Step Sequencer. You can weigh for yourself whether it's worth it to try to approximate the old ones. If you get stuck figuring out Theme Editor, we will try to help get you unstuck.

  44. A common cleanup trick may be simpler for you to try. If you open a cwp and do a "Save As..." then save to a brand new folder and check "Copy all audio with project" the new Project/Audio folder created will contain only the audio in use by that particular cwp. Bear in mind if you have multiple cwps in a given folder, this would need to be done for each one to preserve all audio used by all cwps, but if you are working on a final mix version, this will create a new folder with only the audio being used by that version. It can be easy to create massive audio folders from bounces and this trick can lighten the data load on your disc (if you are being limited by space and need to clean up the original project folder). In your case, that new Project/Audio folder is only the files in use by the cwp in question.
