  1. If I always paid the MSRP but only bought plugins I would regularly use, I bet I would save a lot of money.

  3. Hi guys, It's been a long time since I've written new music, but this track was written and recorded within a week. It just came out fully formed. I'd love to know what you think. Thanks. Note: I've updated the link to the most recent version.

  5. The UI looks a bit less baffling, which would, indeed, make it better for me at least. My time spent with Melodyne has a really unfavorable ratio of "time spent figuring out how to bludgeon the software into doing what I want (usually nudging a note or two into pitch)" to "actually doing what I want to do with the software." Usually it takes me the better part of an hour to do the first and then minutes to do the second. My experiences with using it have been so unpleasant that I don't use it enough to get good at it, and I have to climb Mt. Learningcurve every time. A lot of that time is "elbowing my way past features that aren't available in my version." I enjoy it more when I imagine that it's displaying the entrails of the person responsible for its menu system.

  6. This Voxengo EQ has only 3 nobs. If you are looking for simple EQ like this, check BasiQ. It's also free. https://www.kuassa.com/products/basiq/ I use this often and the sound is very clean and it's actually versatile as it's baxandall EQ. I haven't tested this Voxengo one but I think this one can be an great alternative for BasiQ for quick EQ.

  7. Using the VM Mini Plug-in Host I am able to load the free Vital VST3 wavetable synth into my VM session. It's a very capable wavetable sound source! You can init the Vital preset to just get a raw wavetable oscillator sound source at the Plug-in Host outputs, for patching up with VM modules for further sound shaping. This shuts off the other internal Vital sound processing, except for the ENV1 for (D)A(H)DSR. Or use any of the other internal Vital filters, envelopes, modulations, etc., if desired before outputting audio to other VM modules.

  8. I started this song several years ago when I found the Cheeze Machine synth. I only got so far as the intro and dropped. After I got Sonar and then Cakewalk, I decided to finish it. I think it is fun, nothing extreme. The Bass line is an arppegiator (sp?). This is a good one for headphones because I also played with Spatial placement.

  9. Hey folks, I found a Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen audio Interface brand new being sold from the Focusrite site for a steal. Click on the link to take advantage of the deal. I already have a 3rd Gen one, but for the person who needs one and doesn't want to pay full price, the price is "rite". Get it, Focus - rite,... (Nevermind) Focusrite 18i20 Gen 2

  12. The first computer I used for sequencing was an Atari 520ST. I actually wrote a sequencer in Modula 2 to drive a DX21 via MIDI because no commercial sofware was available at the time. The 520ST had a whopping 512K of memory. I brought it up to 1M by soldering another 512K memory chip on top of the original 512K chip except for one pin which I had to route to the motherboard for a control line. Before the 520ST, I owned an Atari 400 with a total of 8K of memory. Those were the days. It is surreal to hear that someone thinks 32GB is a modest amount of memory. Like others here, I have yet to come close to maximizing the use of my 32 GB of memory.

  18. Philip, I agree , laid back and smooth. There are a few squeaks I would remove but , I think I would leave the majority of them in (maybe just tamed a little). I've been listening to a lot of "Train" lately and I think they're "boosting" the string squeaks on a few of their slower songs. If done well I think it adds to the live feel of a performance. The only thing I would suggest is maybe changing the 2 and 4 to more of a snare sound when you hit around the 2:04 mark giving the drums a little more variety with a small power boost. Very Nice song and performance. Enjoyed it .. mark

  19. "It is easier to fool people than to convince them that they've been fooled" - Mark Twain People will often cite cognitive dissonance, expectation bias, apophenia, the Dunning-Kruger Effect, FOMO and other psychological quirks when mocking the misled, not realizing that such phenomena apply to all of us. And that we have all been duped many times in our lives without even noticing, and that once duped the dupization is often permanent. Which reminds me... I haven't had my aura checked in awhile. Need to make sure those crystals are still working.

  21. I have used Melodyne a few times and each time I thought I was using the right tool and doing the right thing, but the software completely disagreed with me. It could seriously use some kind of usability review from the developers.

  22. That is correct, drives were just updated June 2022, That is what makes it such a good buy. The Focusrite control for this Gen 2 is that same as the Gen 3. The version is Focusrite Control - 3.11.0.19833.11, which includes the current drivers.

  23. And that's what I did. With the mindset of getting the most "bang-for-buck-for-as-many-years-as-I-can", and most importantly, my workflow setup, I don't think I have ever maxed out my ram. However, when I go to mixing, I bring that i9 to it's knees sometimes. There is no way I could go with and i5. I would just be back to freezing tracks and that's what I didn't want to do. As for my storage I got a 4tb WD external storage unit for cheap around BF a few years ago. Then a few months later, after the New Year started I got a 12gb WD external unit for only $30 more than I paid for the 4tb, so I jumped on it. That's 16tb of my total right there. Throw in a few 3tb Seagate HD I already had... it just kinda happened. So my whole plan to get the mbfmb has come to life. I couldn't be more happy.

  25. Thanks for the insights. Did you catch that after I posted, I went back and updated my post to note that I actually already own this effect? How typical is that of us plugin and sample hoarders, eager to re-purchase the same plugins and libraries that we bought in the past when we see a sale?! Now, I'm actually going to try this plugin before the week is over.

  26. I'd played this particular venue on several occasions over the years (but not with this band) and have often been in the audience, so I went in with eyes open, knowing it would be a challenge. That's why we showed up at 4:30 for a 7:00 start time, so we'd be able to do a sound check and then diplomatically suggest a few adjustments. My plan was to place my little TASCAM recorder out on a table so I'd have a reference to discuss with the guy. But when I dug out the recorder I discovered that the batteries had crapped all over themselves and the unit wouldn't turn on. Not a good omen. At least our singer uses a wireless mic and can stand out front to listen. Unfortunately, she has only one criterion for judging sound quality, namely that she's plenty loud. Bass and drum balance? Ya, ya, can you hear the lead vocal? So we were all set up before 6:00 but no sound guy. He rolls in at 6:30 and starts hooking up DIs and mics. (He does get credit, however, to not blinking when I ask for 2 DIs and a stereo mix on keys.) Then he informs us that we can't do a sound check until the football game's over. The game ends at 7:00, we do our check with a full house. I can't hear my vocals in the monitors, but there's no point in complaining because we have to go straight into the first set. Despite all that, it was a pretty good gig. The band was firing on all cylinders, the crowd was loudly appreciative. The room itself is acoustically not bad by bar standards. The stage is big enough for a six-piece band with keys, which isn't always the case at other venues where they seemed to have assumed that all music would be banjo and harmonica duos. Plus the gig's 15 minutes from my home, which with the early hours meant I was in bed by midnight. So I don't mean to demean the venue. We've already been asked back and happily accepted. Plus I get some comfort from knowing that at least we didn't sound any worse than every other band that plays there.

  28. I'm hoping e-cue was being sarcastic, but nothing surprises me nowadays. To be clear, people can spend their money however they want, but not buying Voxengo plugins will not have any effect on the war. Innocent Russian civilians should not be treated like this, they are held hostage by their government.

  30. Wookie , Wonderful job on such touchy and serious subject matter. Nice guitar work , I thought the double leads were a nice touch. One thing that really stood out to me was the opening keys intro. Hearing the chords I immediately heard "I get by with a little help from my friends" and the line stuck with me thru the whole song. Intentional or not it was like a subliminal message got thru. Nice work .. mark

  33. That's very interesting. Looking up an old VI:Control Post, I see this: If you did own the older World Traditions and Ethno libraries, you will be happy to know that this release did include the legacy instruments with lot of enhancements and new material including new instruments such as : Mbira, Karimba, African Guitar Loops, New Taiko multi mics, Latin Zither, Didgeridoo phrase player, Irish Bouzouki, Bulgarian Tupan, Eastern Accordion & Lyra, Moldovian Cymbalum, Russian Balalaika, Ukrainian Bandura, Persian Daf, Turkish Lyra, Santur, Armenian Duduk, Alpine Zither, Finnish Kantele, Nordics Pianos, Italian Accordions, Crazy Flamenco rhythm player with chords recognition and automatic tempo matching, Steel Tongue Drum, Sun Drum, enhanced Steel Drums, Traveler loops inspiration players, Vocal Traveler modules , Gypsy Solo Guitar phrases. UVI added also legato, portamento, and tremolo articulations. To my knowledge, UVI has never been very explicit about where the sounds come from for the World Suite series. Did they ever come out and say "these are all new recordings"? Maybe they did. When you look at World Suite 2, you can see they added a lot of instruments from Precisionsound. They didn't say this publicly, but it was obvious--same exact names of singular instruments, same sounds. They didn't say this publicly, they just said they added these instruments and then incorporated them into their interface. Precisionsound instruments are Kontakt. So they are not an open book about the sources of World Suite. You just have to take it on face value and see if it's worth the money. I think it is. If you look at Best Service's EthnoWorld, it is now in version 6. Most people find the more recent recordings to be the best. So it's something of a mixed bag too. But overall, I think EthnoWorld is the better of the two. But I have gotten a lot of enjoyment and use out of World Suite. What's good about these massive libraries is that they allow people who are not familiar with world instruments to explore--which is exactly what I did. And then if you get into these sounds, you can find better instruments. But a lot of them are just fine as they are. There are so many great colors for people to add to their music. I believe World Traditions was a UVI repackaging of MOTU's Ethno. Because it was so poorly received, I think they knew they needed a new product. I always assumed they used the existing material as a starting point for World Suite, reworked some of the old sounds, recorded new ones, and most importantly, gave everything a new interface.

  34. I haven't tried exporting a GP file to MIDI. I just checked, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of control (type 0 vs type 1, individual MIDI channel assignments per instrument, etc). I just found this video on YT, so I'll have to give it a watch after taking my niece out for her birthday lunch today.

  36. I used to have one that I made for all the knobs on an analogue synth that I had. I used it to put colour coded marks for the correct settings for each song it was used on so that I could set it up between songs without having to press a key to find out if it was set up right. When I later got a digital synth where I could program the patch change sequence in advance and just use a footswitch to advance to the next one in the chain each time, it was much quicker and easier in the live setting, but part of me kind of missed the pressure of the frantic fiddling to be ready in time. Plus it made me look more like I knew what I was doing.😀

  37. VCV was still in its non VSTi infancy when I adopted Voltage Modular. I originally used Softube's modular a lot, but now VM has become my goto. I like the range of third-party modules and the polyphonic options. There are some decent effects modules too enabling it to be used as a FX chain if you so desire. Its a shame one can't use modules across platforms. The VM content from MRB is excellent and the MRB/Cherry VM900 collection is pretty much my favourite for its classic Moog Modular style modules. I am missing a decent, powerful wave table oscillator (with polyphonic version), there is a wave table osc. from one of the third-party developers but it's a bit meh (IMHO). I also have AAS's Multiphonics in a bundle of their other instruments. It's not bad, but it's limited to its built in range of modules.

  38. Reminds me of a few times I was able to provide some back-up gear due to a drunken spill mishap. I also fondly recall making cardboard cutouts once the EQ sounded right (one of those rack gear types, not a proper board or anything like that). These little cutouts worked remarkable well when unauthorized hands decided to reach in and "fix" something. 😁

  41. I tried VCV and then the Softube Modular. Both are excellent sounding. Then I installed Voltage Modular Nucleus (free). https://store.cherryaudio.com/bundles/voltage-modular-nucleus "This collection of 22 modules and over 130 presets is the ideal novice's introduction to modular synthesis. This package includes all of the fundamentals of subtractive analog synthesis, including oscillators, filters, envelope generators, amplifiers, and mixers, plus a sequencer, arpeggiator, and a full suite of useful utility modules and powerful effects modules. With Voltage Modular Nucleus, you can discover the thrill of patching modules together in new and endlessly creative ways, and explore all of the capabilities of Voltage Modular, absolutely free." I decided that the Cherry Audio developers have made a good effort to maximize the ease of use of a modular system, especially for modular newbies. It is very intuitive, and fun to explore. It sounds great and comes with many presets to learn from. With many inexpensive bundles available, it also seemed to avoid that very expensive rabbit hole of acquisition if modular addiction took hold. I upgraded to VM Core + Electro drums when it went on sale. I've now got all the modular I can absorb for the time being! Just pick what works for you. An oscillator is just an oscillator, it's what you do with it that really counts! 🤣
