  1. Enjoy Greg 🙂 This is a case of a developer doing the right thing.. so often they offer freebies for people buying something and leave out the loyal customers that jumped in earlier. Full credit to Steinberg on this one. They get a big tick in my book for that.

  4. If you think about it, you only need to deny yourselves 17 deals on $29 plugins to save up the $499 needed for the one and only Omnisphere 2. This is heresy on the "Deals" forum, I know... 😜 ... Edit to add deal: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/spectrasonics-omnisphere-2 Use code "LABOR" in the cart for the discount price. Deal ends September 7th.

  5. All KONTAKT devs... If you aren't aware of Sound Dust, the dev's really super interesting and in the decade plus I've been a fan, I've found some heavy hitters in film composing have become fans and guys like Trent Reznor. Pick up his freebies. His stuff has a very quirky vibe to it that I love, but I'm sure it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. Majetone is a pretty new KONTAKT dev, but I love the Zeppelin-esque drum kit he has or had on sale for only $15USD. His other libraries sound really nice too, like his glockenspiel. Pick up his freebies. AudioThing has a bunch of high quality libraries, but they've been around for a while, so you probably know them. Beautiful Void Audio makes some beautiful synth patches in KONTAKT and for various soft synths. XTant Audio is an indie developer who mostly does work for other developers including Strezov, Tronsonic, Wavesfactory, Paper Stone Instruments, Bela D and and Auddict, I've only picked up his glockenspiel so far, and it's the only dev I've actually given my permission to use a review at his site for, as I sometimes played glockenspiel in the school band as a kid and I've been in love with the instrument ever since and his is really nice and only around $5 or $6 USD. https://xtant-audio.com/product/bell-lyre-glockenspiel/ I'll update the list when I could think of more. I know I've bought from a lot of indie devs. But I know you already know some of them, like Fluffy Audio from our PMs. If you're looking for specific types of sample libraries, I'm sure that will jog my memory!

  8. I like finding small dev gems who are turning out great products that are every bit as good (sometimes perhaps better) than the big guys, and for not a ton of money. Since Labor day is coming up, what are the best *small time* devs should I be checking out for sales and any time of year, all categories? Looks like people like Ben Osterhouse's stuff. Who else out there?

  9. These days the real secret is in the speaker IRs. You can get some incredible sounds out of really old sims that would otherwise sound like garbage just by disabling the cabinet section and running better IRs with Nadir or something like that in the chain.

  16. FYI, MNTRA has a new website now and has come out with version 2.0 of MNDALA https://www.mntra.io/mndala/ I think if you get the free Huracan it downloads with it, as it is a MNDALA 2.0 instrument. Per VI:Control when you put in MNDALA 2.0, it gets rid of all your old instruments. It will be sorted, but I'm going to wait a bit before trying this. 😀 I suppose the old instruments continue to work in the old MNDALA. I think they just need to make 2.0 versions of them.

  17. It took me a couple of years to save up enough to get Omnisphere... something else always seemed more important... but I don't regret it. It's one of the few software synths that to my ears sounds as good as, or actually better then a hardware rompler/sample-based synth. The only others that come into that category for me are the Korg collection, which are just exact clones of the hardware, and SynthMaster.

  31. I’ve been using backing tracks since midi arrived back in the early 80’s. I found the most bulletproof system has been creating my tracks with midi and good quality VST instruments using Cakewalk and then mixing them to a 44.1/24 wave file. Why use MP3? I sing and play guitar so I only need bass, drums and keyboards on the backing tracks. I have a system of mixing them so they are all exactly the same levels for all the songs. I then use a small very basic laptop and Win Amp as a player. I use Win Amp because it can be set to stop at end of the song. Like @Pathfinder I use a USB foot switch to control playback so my hand never leave my guitar. I have never had any issues with this set up. My band fits in a briefcase. I toyed with using Cakewalk as the playback system but it was just way more work and I found it slow between songs. I also would loose the hands off system I now use. Only advantage of using a Sequencer live is it can then also control lights and effects.

  44. Keith , I guess the 1st thing to consider is the amount and type of inputs you need now , and possibly in the future. The second would be of course how much you want to spend. My really old Roland/Cakewalk interface that I Loved finally fried the preamps last month and I Had to replace it. I had an older cheap m-audio unit I used until I got a new one. Giant difference in sound between the 2. I researched for 2 weeks and checked out Everything in the Focusrite price range. I settled on a Tascam US 2x2 hr. The sound is good and the pre amps are super clean with a Lot of boost. 2 inputs used with either mic/instrument or line level and midi I'll never use. l I had also considered a Universal Audio Volt 2, but for now I'm satisfied with the Tascam. Another thing to consider is the free software that is bundled with whatever interface you purchase. There are tons of videos comparing different units in a price range. Enough to confuse you. Good Luck .. mark
