  6. Some kids in the neighborhood put together a metal/grunge band and asked me to write them some tunes. I wrote two for them and this is the 1st one. I called some of my old friends to help me jam it out so I could hear what it sounded like, we recorded it on a 1/4 reel to reel. very fast set up, a few practice runs, a few 🍺🍺🍺's and then we recorded it. needless to say it's a bit sloppy, but it was great to get my mojo working🤘 I'll post the 2nd one after we record it next week.

  7. It's not a bug. It is within the specified timeslices that the clock rate of your CPU & I/O chipset allows. Even a Cray-3 Vector is not completely instantaneous. Can't break the laws of physics, unfortunately.

  8. You don't always have/need to sidechain the reverb. There's NO "secret effect." That lush reverb effect does not always work on every vocal EDM track. Sometimes only a delay is needed. It all depends on the track. You can easily destroy your vocals with compression if it's not needed. Just because your favorite singer/rapper uses a certain effect - does not mean it will work for you. We use certain effects to fill up the track and if the body is already full and round, using this effect might eat up and muddy up your track - ruining it. Even though it's meant to clean up the vocals. In the end it all comes down to your taste and approach to what works for the mix/track. If it is not needed WHY use it? 🙂

  9. You can often find pianos for free by people who are tired of moving them, don't play and inherited it, or abandoned in old houses. I started playing on my grandmother's Baldwin Hamilton upright grand. My current roommate has a Baldwin Acrosonic spinet. Wurlitzer is known for quality products, mostly, even in the lower price range. It looks good in the picture. If the price is acceptable and it plays well, I don't think you can do better.

  10. Might be advantageous to keep an older version on the drive! When talks of paying for CbB started, I tried opening a CbB project in Platinum and it opened right up! No, all the new features and plugins were not there but with a rescan and a little bit of ingenuity, I was able to work almost as if I never left Platinum!

  14. There have been various iterations of pop ups/warnings over the years to varying degrees of effectiveness for missing components, but this situation warrants a pop up when the transport is started. A pop up with "You currently have no output device selected. Would you like to select one now?" and a button that either drills them directly into the preferences page or a routing blurb would help new folks a lot. A routing map of the current project would be true icing on the cake, but this particular one is a (not-so-obvious) showstopper. Even something as simple as highlighting the drop down in the Master to RED when "none" is selected would make people take notice (they could be monitoring a buss instead, but it would make the situation more obvious just in case).

  17. I was pleasantly surprised that it automatically finds installed apps and embeds itself as a plugin. It even found Photoshop from CS5.5 (failed to install automatically, but it added manually just fine). It is rather rare to find apps that support the "pre-CC" Adobe products.

  19. (WARNING; Extreme facetiousness and sarcasm is both expressed and implied) I’m a neophyte at this stuff and I want instantaneous satisfaction. I don’t want to read any manuals or use a detailed search of any forum or YT videos for a direct and detailed answer to my particular question because that takes too much time and effort. I don’t have any music theory or computer operation experience either, and don’t want any. I don’t want to develop any common sense or troubleshooting skills… life is too short for that. I just want this DAW to understand what I’m thinking and execute my wishes post haste without my input. I don’t want to know about or comprehend anything about latency or signal flow, because my computer should be smart enough and fast enough to just do it now, without any interaction on my part. I should be able to enter the Daytona 200 with my Yugo that has no tires and still win the race. And my DAW should have a command available that can brew, pour, and deliver a cup of coffee to my desk… like yesterday. Other DAWs can do that, why can’t this one? Never mind that there are many folks out there that have spent decades learning and honing a skill set that covers all of these things. Their experienced and insightful answers don’t count. I don’t have the time or patience for that.

  22. That looks identical to the piano I grew up with. I even took it out to a gig once, but quickly gave up on the idea when I realized that moving a piano throws it out of tune. But I loved that piano because it had amazingly fast action. If you can score it for a couple hundred bucks, absolutely go for it. But if they want a thousand dollars, though, get him a digital piano with the most important feature for a learner: a headphone jack.

  27. Alright, the genre name keeps on growing, I don't really know anymore haha. There not much sticking out so it's more about the thing as a whole. I think I will change it up in the future where I will try to get 1 or 2 elements to be upfront. Just like a proper musician 😜

  29. I am with @57Gregy on this one. An interface conflict like in the OP is very common when it is in use by another program (even Windows). It seems from the OP that you have both applications open, and since Guitar Rig does have recording capability (for the looper), I am assuming you opened Guitar Rig first and it locked your Scarlett on you. Guitar Rig should only be used as a VST internal to SONAR in this case. Windows is also the gatekeeper, so another thing to verify is that both "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" and "Give exclusive mode applications priority" are unchecked in the Properties->Advanced tab for the Scarlett in the Windows Sound Control Panel. Even silly things like browsing YouTube or such can cause Windows to give control of your interface to the browser with those options checked. Windows is very much "first come, first served" so I even go so far as to explicitly assign the RealTek chip as the default sound device in Windows so that most apps won't even see the interface unless you assign it within the app itself. The first app that sees that interface and uses it can lock it on you.

  30. The new issue of Beat Magazine, #218, gives you a free Bitwig 8-Track license. Plus a 5.9GB vocal soundbank. And of course, there's a new Zampler expansion again, called Hyper Vox. Bitwig 8-Track is free quite often. Owning the 8-Track version gives you an upgrade price for the higher versions: You get Bitwig Essentials for 79$/€ instead of 99$/€, Bitwig Studio Producer for 169$/€ instead of 199$/€ and Bitwig Studio for 359$/€ instead of 399$/€

  31. Cool song. I like how "real" it sounds - like an actual performance, not something that's put together from the ground up bit by bit. Nice.

  32. Exactly, it just doesn't make any sense to me. I also found out that if you have stacked notes in the PRV and you mark all of them and you want to transpose them up or down, you can't select multiple notes by marking them, because when you do, it also selects the ones below that I didn't want to move... CbB seems to have a lot of silly things like this spread throughout, and it's messing too much with my workflow that I will have to look elsewhere to do my composing. I really wanted to get into using it as my daily driver, but it just keeps throwing shade at me, when I'm trying to do simple things. It's not really because I don't know how to use it properly, it's because I'm trying to do something and the program gives me resistance and says "Nope, I see what you are trying to do, but you will have to do it in a less intuitive way, at the expense of being pulled out of your creative flow".

  33. The way midi tracks display when there are overlapping clips has been annoying me forever. And CW just loves creating them when you play around editing in the PRV long enough and start copy/pasting or ctrl-drag-and-dropping, or whatever. I’ve never once wanted overlapping midi clips, but there ya go. I’m used to bouncing them back to a single flat clip and re-splitting them at my markers (and losing my edited clip names in the process), but yeah, if the Track View wasn’t lying to me by saying there’s no notes (or fewer notes) where there blatantly are some, I probably wouldn’t care about the overlapping clips thing. —- FWIW, my use case is “I never record any midi; I compose & ‘type it in’ in the PRV.”

  41. Big fan of the fact it actually does work as a plugin in affinity photo. As for the main raw program they sell, it is frustrating that the version that comes with the plugin option costs dramatically more than the version with all those tools and more in a standalone form. Great way to get some of that functionality for free here.

  43. Warning, long post ahead! There are a lot of people here who are passionate about music and know what goes into creating it. I thought this forum might be a good place to share my story. A lot of "older" people like me have hearing loss. Some of you may be reading this right now. 😄 I also have a rare condition called diplacusis. There are different types of diplacusis, but for me it means my two ears hear the same note as different pitches. The difference is small in the higher frequencies but gets steadily worse as the pitch gets lower. Sometimes this problem makes music sound out of tune. Even simple intervals like octaves can sound bad although a tuner confirms the pitches are right. I don't know exactly when this problem started or what caused it, but eventually it forced me to give up playing music with other people. Soon after that it got bad enough that I stopped writing and recording music because I couldn't trust what I was playing or singing. If you've heard my music (especially my singing) you know that's no great loss to the world, but it is something I've enjoyed doing for many years. We can skip over my long and convoluted path to finding a doctor who even knew anything about this condition let alone whether it might be treatable. Eventually I found an audiologist and musician in Ohio who is involved in research related to diplacusis and other hearing challenges affecting musicians. Ultimately, she devised a program of simple exercises to attempt to retrain my brain in order to restore, as much as possible, more normal pitch perception. The exercises involved listening very carefully while playing various notes, scales, and intervals over and over again on the bass guitar until they started to make sense to my ears. After 20 or 30 minutes a day over the course of a few months, it made a significant difference for me. It's still hard to hear pitches in a more complex musical context or in noisy situations, but under controlled conditions music is starting to sound reasonably normal to me again. To celebrate this progress and put it to the test in a real-world situation, I decided to record a cover of George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I picked that song because I've always liked it and because I knew the bass part would be a good challenge for me. The guitar parts would have been impossible for me, but I asked my friend and long-distance collaborator Craig Hansen to help. Craig played the lead and rhythm guitar parts on our version, while I handled the bass and everything else including the mixing, which was a challenge in itself considering my compromised hearing. This was never intended to be a note-for-note copy, but we did try to honor the spirit and style of the original. Here's the track, created on Cakewalk of course: https://www.soundclick.com/johnhenke/?content=songs Note: Craig is a really talented blind multi-instrumentalist from Minnesota who writes and records original music all by himself. I help with getting his tracks ready and uploading them to the various streaming services (there's probably a joke in there somewhere about a partly deaf person and a blind person making music together). If you'd care to hear more of Craig's work, you can find him on SoundClick. His music is also available for purchase on Apple Music and other sites.

  45. Oh, I should've been more clear. If you have an existing unexpired license, it won't extend the license by a year. I had a license with 9 months left, and after redeeming, I still had a license with 9 months left, and new license with 12 months left. Had I known the behavior, I would've waited until my license expired to redeem.

  47. I would check that SONAR, Solo and Guitar Rig are all set to the same sampling rate. Are you using GT as a plug-in in SONAR or in standalone mode (if that is possible)? It looks like both GT and SONAR are trying to access the Solo's driver at the same time.
