  4. I've always thought that was in fact very bad advice. The idea is to get a good working system and then keep it that way. Constantly updating is a recipe for instability regardless of what so called "experts" say. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" as the saying goes.

  8. Another alternative to a separate track, is an additional take lane. This has the advantage of keeping it within the same track (so no need to use a folder), whilst keeping it separate for editing.

  10. No, not at all. The ladies are most welcome, however there are some rules. Please note these are all numbered "1". 1. Learn to work the toilet seat. You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down. We need it up, you need it down. You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down. 1. Sunday = sports. It's like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be. 1. Shopping is NOT a sport. And no, we are never going to think of it that way. 1. Crying is blackmail. 1. Ask for what you want. Let us be clear on this one: Subtle hints do not work! Strong hints do not work! Obvious hints do not work! Just say it! 1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question. 1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it. That's what we do. Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for. 1. A headache that lasts for 17 months is a problem. See a doctor. 1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all comments become null and void after 7 days. 1. If you won't dress like the Victoria's Secret girls, don't expect us to act like soap opera guys. 1. If you think you're fat, you probably are. Don't ask us. 1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one. 1. You can either ask us to do something or tell us how you want it done. Not both. If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself. 1. Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials. 1. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle. 1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, expect an answer you don't want to hear. 1. 15. Its probably something that intersects with the bios update and the latest (Microsoft) Windows 10 platform SDK that CbB uses is my best guess. But the fact that Platinum doesnt exhibit any obvious issue is interesting. Maybe you had cbb set up to use a different drive or different hardware or a control surface. There are no major differences in CbB that could exhibit such a drastic change otherwise. BTW you can always do a screen capture and look at it later to see what pop up messages were shown since those could have been a clue to whats wrong. Glad you were able to recover with a BIOS reflash however. BIOS updates don't always do the best thing (most changes are for new hardware additions or gaming support) and they sometimes require updates to your chipset drivers as well.
    1 point
  16. Well I've taken the line of least resistance and rolled back the bios to the previous version and - session drummer roll please - CbB is now back to normal. I am never updating the bios ever again.

  18. If it ain't broke... This especially applies to Bios settings, which are not exactly an easy trick to pull off. If things are working well in your music-optimized computer, why mess with it?
    1 point
  19. I agree, BIOS is not something that has any bearing on how software runs, if anything a few system setting have reverted to default that you need to go and tweak but I doubt that is the issue. When in doubt, re install the software from scratch. Before I update Bios I always read the list of "why". It usually is nothing that will make my life better so it's been years since I've had to update a BIOS.

  20. Sadly, it's not that old a picture. Less than 5 years, IIRC. I say "sadly" because in those short intervening years my hair has taken on the same hue as my beard and the small bald spot you can't see in the photo has expanded greatly. My daughter commented that nothing looks dumber than a balding guy with long hair (or worse, a pony tail, which I was often guilty of). So I cut it all off. RE Craig's Yes/Halloween comment: I actually still have a couple Wakeman-esque wizard robes and dragon kimonos in the closet from my glam-rock days. Might have to have those dry cleaned before Halloween, the only appropriate time to actually don them. I'd need a wig, however, to complete the image. I can relate to the hospital discharge story, as can we all. My theory is that they intentionally drag the process out in order to bill an extra day's stay. It's happened that way every time I've been in hospital: in the morning they inform me that I'll be released, but it doesn't actually happen until afternoon. In the meantime they've brought me a fresh $100 toothbrush and a $50 sandwich. Yes, I realize that's just here in the U.S. - nobody in Australia, the UK, Canada or the civilized world in general has ever seen a bill for a $20 plastic cup.

  28. I'm trying to use my BR-800 as a control surface for Cakewalk. I have mangaged (using the instructions from Boss) to get the BR-800 to talk to Cakewalk and have a visable signal on the screen. However I don't have a audible signal. I've tried changing the output setting in the computers setting back and forward between the two possible output options (BR-800 and the computers speakers) and still can't get an audible signal. Can anyone help with this?

  29. I have to agree with your Erik. It will be interesting on how Bandlab chooses to integrate Cakewalk with its main-site. Really can be a platform for educational learning. How can you beat the price- Free P.S. Not only Free but a really great DAW

  35. I've only used it twice in projects that consisted mostly of frozen instrument tracks with a few regular audio tracks. First time it seemed to have worked ok until I had cause to unfreeze some of the frozen synths when it soon became apparent that while the frozen audio had moved the underlying midi had not. The second time I tried it also moved the midi, so in my very limited experience so far it's a 50% success rate. Maybe some kind of pilot error first time out, but not sure how it could be. I figured that select all would do exactly that, but it one case it didn't. Both in last version of Platinum btw, can't speak for the bandlab version.

  37. Ripple editing has been a godsend to me, but until they added the visible on/off button recently, it was confusing if you forgot that it was on while doing edits. I've found that it moves everything except automation envelopes, at least, I haven't figured that out, yet. It can be configured. It has saved me much time by filling in large holes without cutting and pasting. Overall, my editing techniques may be simpler than some, but this was one of the better additions for my needs.

  38. Fast bounce now has better multiprocessing and uses another core to do the disk reading. It has some moderate gains in speed depending on the project. On a disk bound project I got about a 30 second gain on something that would normally take about 2.5 minutes. It really depends on the project however.

  46. Quick speed reference: Conventional HD sustains ~200MB/Sec SATA SSD sustains ~550MB/Sec M.2 Ultra (NVMe) sustains ~3500MB/Sec Where you're going to see the most bang-for-the-buck is with disk-streaming Sample Libraries. They're going to load faster... and you'll be able to pull 17+ times the disk-streaming polyphony vs. conventional HD (6+ times the polyphony of SATA SSD). For most users: We recommend using a SATA SSD for your boot drive (still plenty fast). Use M.2 Ultra SSD (more expensive) "strategically" for that library/libraries that loads slow or where you need massive polyphony. On many motherboards that have two M.2 slots; if you run the second M.2 slot using 4 PCIe lanes (maximum performance), the last two SATA ports will be disabled. You can work around this issue by putting the second M.2 Ultra SSD on a PCIe host card. Note that it has to be installed in a PCIe slot with at least 4 PCIe lanes. If you've got a complex build (multiple M.2 Ultra SSDs, multiple PCIe cards like UAD-2, dedicated video card, etc)... available PCIe lanes can become an issue. Typically, if you're going socket 2066, it's because it's a more complex build. 😉 If you go socket 2066, go all the way and get an i9 CPU with 44 PCIe lanes.
