Hello All! I could have posted this to the FB group, but decided I like this format for this particular post. I think a lot of us that have been avid CW/SPLAT users over the years have noticed a marked increase in people who are new to Cakewalk, even new to recording, asking basic (noob) questions to the group. I'm sure it has to do with the awesomeness of the CW product, but let's be real, I'm sure being free doesn't hurt! Instead of seeing the longtime experts throw up their hands and say, "Dang dude (or chick), read the flippin' manual!" I see thoughtful, and thorough responses--regardless of how many times we old-timers may have seen the same questions over and over. I think over the years (and yes, they've been many) one of the most attractive parts of using CW is knowing the group of users behind it are always willing to help, knowledgeable about the product, and respectful (99% of the time :-/) and that helps me stick with it and not change DAWs. A BIG shout out to all long-time CW users that take their own time to help me, and everyone else that needs it! Cheers!2 points

Hello to everyone in Bandlab and the Cakewalk community! I don't know if someone already did it but I was thinking for quite some time in doing this post. First I'm going to make a summary of why I'm writing all this... I have been dj for more than 12 years and more than a year ago I decided to produce electronic music, but, there was a big obstacle in my way... MONEY... because I had just married and left my native country, it was all new for me and I had to start from scratch , unemployed and in a new country, I had that obstacle to start doing one of the things that I love most in music and wanted to share with people what I could give through the music, it was difficult because first I had to learn all about the DAW and secondly because almost all the big DAW have a very high price (not all of them), so, I started with LMMS, Ardour and Tracktion (the free version) doing some beats and learning on the way, and then something incredible happened, CAKEWALK BY BANDLAB CAME BACK AND NOW FOR FREE! I could not believe that such a powerful software was free and today, it even has a support and development team behind it!!! thanks to that, I was growing, improving and learning in the world of music production. Honestly I do not know how to thank you, only that even if you decide to do it right now not free, I would pay without problems (as long as the software has a price according to my wallet hahahaha) All this just to thank all of you for giving us, those who started from scratch and those who find it difficult to start in music production without a budget for it, this great opportunity to have a full, powerful, professional, huge and pretty good at what he does piece of software. Soon I will show you a little of what I am producing right now, my style is House, Progressive House, Tech House and Deep House. Bandlab and all the team... a big, very big, THANK YOU!!! P.s.: Sorry if it was not the place to post this.2 points

While I continue to be happy to answer any and all questions, including those that that have been answered many times before, I would encourage new users to Google keywords against site:forum.cakewalk.com to find archived discussions and answers. There's a lot to be learned there. Add the user name of a frequent flyer like scook, anderton or (dare I suggest) brundlefly to get targeted answers. Examples: missing dropped skipped midi notes site:forum.cakewalk.com metronome not working site:forum.cakewalk.com pan panning problem scook site:forum.cakewalk.com pops crackles distorted playback site:forum.cakewalk.com2 points

I thought about all the people that would like a high quality DAW and simply could not afford one. I am a very long time user of Sonar and now Cakewalk. I paid for every upgrade version. I am proud that my favorite DAW is still available and anyone can afford it. In a big way its something I can get behind and support. I too thank the Bandlab team. I also thank my fellow users for keeping the faith and staying the course. They too have been an important part of the success of the new and better Cakewalk by Bandlab.2 points

A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a flight from LA to NY. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game? The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vise versa. Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, "Okay, if you don't know the answer you pay me $5.00, and, if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500.00." This catches the blonde's attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the earth to the moon?" The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer. Okay says the lawyer, your turn. She asks the lawyer, "What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?" The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, no answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the library of congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.00. The blonde says, "Thank you," and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, "Well, what's the answer? "Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep.2 points

Alright, here's another MFX plugin that has a pretty limited user base 😉 This is a simple transposer... basically the same functionality as the Key+ control in the midi panel of a track, BUT it's syncable in groups! Sleetah2000 had a question about transposing multiple tracks at once (Multi-track Transposing) which is difficult because the Key+ control isn't groupable, so I came up with a way to synchronize several instances of an MFX plugin... seems to work. You can assign each plugin to one of four groups; all plugins in the same group will track together (i.e. changing any of them changes all of them) Drop a plugin in a track, assign it to Group 1, say, and Control/Drag it onto several other tracks and you can transpose all of them at once. It only has an 'Absolute' mode at the moment, but I'll add a 'Relative' mode soon. Granted, it's just a transposer and not terribly useful, especially if the Key+ control is made groupable in a future CbB release (hint, hint), but the syncing model I'm using will probably be handy for other more complex MFX plugins coming up. It's free. You can DL it at Viramor.com if you want to try it out.2 points

Windows 8.1 will most likely be my last version of Windows that I run. For me, it comes down to who does the computer belong to - me, or the company that makes the software the computer runs on. Microsoft (and many others) clearly believe that once you put their software on it, your computer and what you do with it belongs to them. The amount of 'telemetry' being sent back to the mother ship and the forced updates are my primary factors to moving away from Windows. In fact, the primary reason this computer still has Windows is due to Sonar/Cakewalk. I have switched over to Linux for just about everything else. I should also note that when Windows first appeared, I was a very big proponent of the software and the company. But as is typical, as the company got bigger things changed and not necessarily for the better. As they changed, so did I. So yes, my next computer will be upgraded, but not with Windows 10.2 points

For me, what makes Groove Agent unique is the styles. They let you do something beyond any other drum program I'm aware of. To my ears, the Simon Phillips Jazz expansion sounds the best, both in the playing and the sound of the kit. It has brushes and 20 styles. If you like brushes, you have to hear the demos. I'm going to demo the Studio Drums. It only has 14 styles, though. Aside from those two, IMHO the best deals in this offer are the Metro Heights, Nashville, and Songwriter's Acoustic Expansions. They offer as many styes as two Styles expansions ($25) and for $5 more you get a drum set. On the basis of quantity of patterns, the Beat Expansions compare very well to the kinds of expansions you get from Toontrack and Addictive Drums. I can't speak to their quality. But again, they are sounds and MIDI patterns, not styles.1 point

This topic has been battled over for years. My own experience has taught me that converting 48k to 44.1 is just not that beneficial! Besides that, 48k sample rates have revealed artifacts in some VST plugins both during playback and worse on bouncing the track to audio or conversion to 44.1. Personally, everything I do is 24 bit 44.1 k samplerate and have never had a problem or complaint. I work in a professional capacity doing everything from demos and commercials to full blown orchestra and choir projects. Country to fusion jazz. I have not had one complaint over all this time as to the quality of my work. I think I will stay at 24/44.1.1 point

Actually we are on certain ground. Have you been unable to download Cakewalk? Are you using it? Is it working ? If all the answers are yes. That would mean to me that speculating with no basis to do so is unproductive.1 point

I think we can complain when we can no longer open Cakewalk. Until then the notion that we are renting, leasing or somehow not in control of getting Cakewalk and using it; we should simply stop speculating and make music. To me when they said it is free I have no reason to think otherwise. No one else does either.1 point

To me the definition of stem is a group of audio tracks. This has always meant to me a bus was involved. If on the other hand one wants to copy all the tracks as independent tracks the way I do it is select all tracks and don't mixdown. I export them. I also use broadcast wave files as the files output. This with ensure everything lines up in another DAW.1 point

Not to push the point further, I'm actually on the side of folks who are happy using older versions as I myself was exactly that person and stayed with 8.5 through the whole X series debacle. So I'm just saying this to be supportive and also encourage people to take the actual small amount of time it will take to learn how the new versions differ. It's a lot easier than you think if you just take certain steps. As I said I stayed with 8.5 and so when I finally ended up with X3e I fired it up and nothing was right! It was all very wrong and simple things I had done were all now evasive. I quickly bolted back to my comfort zone and good ol' 8.5 and got some work done. I sat on x3 for a while but because I follow this forum I started to read about new features that I really needed and so fired up x3e again. What I did was NOT TRY and record a serious project but just explore and experiment. It didn't take long and I all of a sudden "got it". It's only the GUI interface that they changed. I learned I DON'T have to use Take Lanes etc. I'd say it was only a rainy afternoon and I was working 100% without issues in X3e. It's all how you set your preferences and with a few minor changes to your workflow after a week you'll soon forget 8.5 existed. I'm working on some tutorial videos for a few friends that are total first time computer DAW users so the they are dead simple to follow. They are border line boring if you already know these things. I start with what I believe is super important.. First learn your way around the GUI. I think the big mistake Newbies make is they try and jump right in and record and edit and they have no clue about what the softwares layout and features are. See my signature for links,1 point

I hear what you're saying about Win10 and what I refer to as the "annoying components"... but those things can be reined-in with the Pro version. Once Cortana, OneDrive, all automatic updates including notifications, privacy settings, etc have been disabled... Win10 is a fine DAW platform. FWIW, I feel like it's more of a "dumbing down" of the OS (trying to make it easy for the less tech-savvy) than a matter of control. And in that, it's two-steps-forward... one-step-back. On a computer, I rarely like anything "automatic".1 point

I really don't understand the bullheaded resistance to Windows 10. I get "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I get not always having to jump on the latest update the minute it drops. I get that those who live on the cutting edge often end up bleeding to death. I get it. But I really don't understand the bullheaded resistance to upgrading after four years. But W7 is going away. W7 is 10 years old. Eventually your beloved antique computer with it's beloved antique OS is going to die. You, at some point WILL upgrade. Either because you choose to or because you are forced to. W10 is not "an atrocious piece of garbage. " It is proven. Scads of people use it regularly and have no problems. The thing about falling behind is that the further you fall behind, the further you fall behind. You become ever more susceptible to attacks as vulnerabilities multiply and become easier and easier to exploit. Your likelihood of things getting corrupted increases. Hardware fails and it's replacement isn't compatible.1 point

It's sort of like being a Classic car owner. They have to sort any issue they have out for them selves as you certainly can't expect to take a 56 Chevy back to a GM dealer for a tune up and expect them to have the correct parts! What's a carburetor buddy, doesn't come up on the computer? I still have 8.5 ( 64 bit) installed, haven't opened it but it's still there. I think I installed it to get True Piano's and the guitar tuner. You could do this. Keep using your old version on the old computer, but then have a second set up, up to date, and start messing with it. Eventually you'll get over the culture shock and all will be better. It just takes time to adjust. I still like using Word 2008 and hate the newer versions. But at work I've had to adjust and now it' doesn't matter I use both the old version and the new one. And the other day I went to do something on the old version and found out the new version does work better.. I stayed with 8.5 up until X3e came out and I was offered an upgrade cheap. At first I hated it and stayed with 8.5. But after a few months I took a shine to it and have never gone backwards since. For me it's the big improvements in the PVR a place I spend a lot of time.1 point

I think it was on the Akai MPK mini2 setup video where they recommended to put all VST plug ins into one folder, such as OS (C:) > Program Files > VSTplugins. I guess this would be for easy management. I have done so, and it has been working just fine for me. Just a thought...1 point
