  7. The new issue of Beat Magazine, #218, gives you a free Bitwig 8-Track license. Plus a 5.9GB vocal soundbank. And of course, there's a new Zampler expansion again, called Hyper Vox. Bitwig 8-Track is free quite often. Owning the 8-Track version gives you an upgrade price for the higher versions: You get Bitwig Essentials for 79$/€ instead of 99$/€, Bitwig Studio Producer for 169$/€ instead of 199$/€ and Bitwig Studio for 359$/€ instead of 399$/€

  11. Both Komplete Kontrol and Kontakt comes in both executable and plugin form. As you want them to interact with CbB, you need to use the VST plugins, and not the executables. The plugins will show up in the plugin browser, provided that You've got the paths to your NI plugins (VST2 and/or VST3) included in Edit > Preferences > File > VST Settings | VST Scan Paths You've run a plugin rescan, either manual or automatic.

  12. I ignored this thread because I wasn't in the market for a product like VSX (or so I thought), so I didn't read all the posts until last night. Can't get over the nearly unanimous feedback. Just bought on JRR for $266 using code "ANALOG" with the added bonus of free shipping and no tax. Plus, the upgrade to Platinum is half off right now on the Steven Slate site. Thanks @jngnz for the excellent write up and for passing along your thoughts. That put me over the fence almost immediately. Really looking forward to seeing what these cans can do.

  13. I know I am way late to this topic, and there's already been a lot of helpful advice, but had I noticed it earlier, I would have suggested that 75 tracks seems about 65 tracks too many for a first lesson. Maybe someone reading this in the future will take my suggestions. A better idea would be to start with the standard rock band configuration of drums (kick, snare, overheads and toms), vocals, guitar, and bass. Keyboards and/or 2nd guitar. Replace instruments as necessary to fit genre. I've been at this for a while and I believe I have yet to have a project go over 20 tracks. Learning how to mix is, IMO, like learning most things: it's best to start with a simple task and work your way up. You wouldn't have someone learn to drive by starting them on a cross-country trip or entering them in an autocross. You start them in an empty parking lot learning what all the controls do. You wouldn't start someone first learning to read on Moby Dick. Go from a simple project to a more complex ones as you learn the basics. Otherwise there's a danger of getting bogged down for days or weeks at various steps just trying to juggle that many elements. Gain staging a project with 8 tracks is much easier than doing one with 48 tracks, and the same with applying effects, panning, setting levels and so on. The level and tonal balance of every sound in a mix interacts with every other sound. Rolling off bass in one sound makes another sound bassier and so on.

  17. Some kids in the neighborhood put together a metal/grunge band and asked me to write them some tunes. I wrote two for them and this is the 1st one. I called some of my old friends to help me jam it out so I could hear what it sounded like, we recorded it on a 1/4 reel to reel. very fast set up, a few practice runs, a few 🍺🍺🍺's and then we recorded it. needless to say it's a bit sloppy, but it was great to get my mojo working🤘 I'll post the 2nd one after we record it next week.

  19. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Carbon8--modal-electronics-carbon8-8-voice-experimental-digital-synthesizer 1099$ preorder . Modal Electronics packed a ton of features into this 37-key experimental instrument. First, its 8-voice polyphony will have you in disbelief that so much sound could come from such a compact synth. Secondly, more than 40 refined digital algorithms, 33 filter types (including a new vocal filter), and shapeable LFO waveforms mean that you’ll never want for new sounds to craft and explore. The Carbon8’s robust Sequencer and Arpeggiator sections make it effortless to create intricate chord progressions and lead parts. Finally, like all Modal Electronics instruments, the Carbon 8 is highly customizable via the free MODALapp.

  21. +1 to the above. Another thing to be cognizant of is that many "solutions" are static in two regards... 1) they assume collapse to mono, and 2) they often apply a solution that will not change during the duration of a song unless you actively intercept that. While neither is inherently "bad," they tend to ignore two other important elements, panning and faders. Another thing to keep in mind is to focus on elements in the same way that you want the listener to track them (even with simple faders/automation) to give space/focus when introduced then move them more into the background if they are repetitive. Even with frequency collisions, the louder will take precedence at that point in time, so EQ may not always be the right choice for the situation. While many "unmasking" tools can be super helpful, just beware of things that give you a static solution irrespective of the dynamics of the song itself, verse, chorus, yada yada, across an entire track.

  23. usually just #1 but if i have a dense mix i'll use my Izotope tools to find and unmask neutron/nectar. ultimately though i also check with MP3 listens (either via the Ozone Codec or an exported MP3) since the MP3 algorithm (even on its highest setting of 320K) will make choices on masking and even small mix changes can have significant results in the MP3 output (one example comes to mind - a tambourine hit which is just barely there in the mix suddenly becomes the next loudest thing in an MP3 - why? - the algorithm felt it was the strongest signal that the particular frequency and then suppressed other). so, i would say checking your target output file type is critical. and if you're streaming, recheck there as well - some streaming services (in an effort to make things "sound better") seem to do some EQ'ing and loudness adjustments (perhaps they call it "mastering") even if you don't want it. for example, Reverbnation - seems to do some slight bandwidth reduction (stuff seems slightly crunchy compared to my source file) cause a very slight darkening on the material, otoh, Broadjam seems to add some additional HF and loudness making things brighter and louder (regardless of the LUFS i submit - whether -12 or -14). Reverbnation target artists who want to sell their stuff, gigs, etc; Broadjam is about getting paid to help find deals for your music so tries to make it "sound better" to "assist". maybe i'm incorrect but that's my observations using those two services.

  28. Big fan of the fact it actually does work as a plugin in affinity photo. As for the main raw program they sell, it is frustrating that the version that comes with the plugin option costs dramatically more than the version with all those tools and more in a standalone form. Great way to get some of that functionality for free here.

  33. The SOS record feature is in essence already a merge, with the added functionality of undo or selective edit using take lanes. Once satisfaction is achieved, BtC commits. If this is implemented, I would request a toggle setting in Preferences so that I don't ever have to use it.

  34. yeah, it's listed often as "clean" but there is definitely some character there so i've been using it on vocals when i don't want too much character but i want some colorization and yet clean smooth response. i've had it for a while but never really tried it out until after some backing vocals sounded "saturated" with my usual suspects. i popped this on in and suddenly, voila! it was right on the money. put it into my record and mix templates and moved along. PWM is definitely a unique technique for a compressor, normal something we equate with digital circuits but implemented in analog circuits (to be fair, it's all transistors etc no matter how small)...

  35. Yes! The original was one of the few compressors with a pulse width modulation-based design. It's super-fast. I thought it was weird because it didn't have an attack control, but then I realized that it didn't really need one in the conventional sense.

  41. The best interfaces that I could find that meet the criteria of costing under $100 and allowing simultaneous recording of 2 tracks, 1 guitar and 1 vocal, are the PreSonus Audiobox USB 96K at $99 and the M-Audio M-Track Duo at $69. Personally, I'd go for the PreSonus. I have a similar model, the PreSonus Studio 2|4 and the sound quality is excellent. My larger interface is a Focusrite. They're both great, really. Can't go wrong with either brand, but CAVEAT: Focusrite has saved costs on the lower end models like the Scarlett 2i2 by omitting a MIDI interface. PreSonus still make theirs with the standard 5-pin DIN MIDI connectors.

  46. This was actually a side issue in the situation I had mentioned above. She had had minimal exposure to recording/DAW usage and not developed an ear for listening at that point, so I found myself constantly searching for visual aids to drive explanations home. I ended up having her Bounce to Track(s) fairly frequently when she started out so that she could visually see those changes on her own till she developed an ear for them. Barring a few exceptions, waveform changes due to tweaks, and especially FX, can only be visualized by baking them in on a Bounce to Track(s). For real-time monitoring, SPAN is also a good tool to monitor changes since you can use instances side-by-side to "straddle" the FX in question, as well as it being light-weight enough that you can use it pretty much anywhere and everywhere you need to "see" in a project.
