  2. We have lots of stuff in the works! Over 30 Evolution-based instruments in various stages of development, several of which are close to being released. Two have already been encoded by Native Instruments for the free Kontakt Player, and it's just a matter of finishing their demos and videos. We have a couple non-Evolution libraries in development, as well as updates in the works for existing products.

  3. Perhaps it would be more productive to talk about alternatives to Gig Performer. I feel that having competition is good for the market. Here are some of my experiences/thoughts. If on Windows only, Cantabile is the most obvious competitor to Gig Performer. They have three tiers of their product (free, Solo, and Performer). The principle design goals are stability, performance, and flexibility ... reminds me of Gig Performer. Their updates are subscription based, like Bitwig. They have an active community. A Mac version is being worked on, but it's been several years and still hasn't been released. I've only tried the free version. Apple Mainstage (Mac only) ... cheap, only $30 ... includes the EXS instruments available in Logic. Better (cleaner) looking interface than Gig Performer. Steinberg VST Live ... still in its infancy ... clean interface, but a little buggy. I picked this up for $50 when it was 50% off. Definitely worth that price, given it comes with Padshop 2, Retrologue 2, and HALion Sonic 7 with Pro / Artist / Basic Sets. The way this works is more straightforward to me than GP4 ... with a more DAW-centric bus type of workflow, and is faster if all you want to do is have virtual instruments and just mix between them. Studio One Professional Show Page ... similar to VST Live, I like the more DAW-centric design. Set up "players" and save the presets for each song. I like this as well, but for doing splits and transposes, have to create a multi instrument, explicitly adding another layer, whereas VST Live has that capability for every patch. I'm still on S1 5 Pro--I don't know if they've made a lot of improvements in S1 6 Pro. For doing basic stuff using the DAW-centric insert/bus paradigm which is most of the time for me when using keys, I find Mainstage, VST Live, or S1 Show Page is faster. However, for more complex signal routing, Gig Performer and Cantabile are better suited for it ... especially for guitar (visually, just having a flowchart type of interface makes more intuitive sense when it matches how virtual wires are connected). PluginGuru Unify ... can easily layer patches ... the only thing missing is being able to quickly change between patches in a setlist. So, I've been playing around with using Unify within S1 Pro Show. I've been looking for a VI host that I can give neophyte keyboardists and have them be able to layer patches and switch between patches in a setlist. So far, VST Live is the most intuitive (though I've experienced some VI loading issues that may be buggy behavior, or something I don't understand). Gig Performer is powerful, but too complex (and I would guess Cantabile would fall in this category as well). Anyhow, what are other folks experiences? Is Gig Performer the best solution for your use case or is something else working for you sufficiently or better?

  11. We love to derail threads. Now we are into the never ending piracy threads. I can sum it up by I have never walked in the shoes of a developer. I have no idea how I'd really react if my work was available to anyone without paying for it. I'd be afraid to download something from a torrent site because I don't believe there is honor among thieves. What data are they stealing from you that you are not aware of. I avoid developers who spend more time locking down their product than improving it.

  13. There's a reason a totally an obscure company from Sweden ended up taking over the music industry. Or why a company that didn't exist prior to 2000 took over television and movies (for a period). Both Netflix and Spotify were answers to industries that weren't giving customers what they wanted, despite the technology being available. While people were yelling at each other about piracy, a couple companies were like "hmm, maybe we should just give people what they want: convenience. Every movie and every song you could ever want on one platform, with one app, at the click of a button, on demand." If The Pirate Bay would have charged $9.99/mo for access to their tracker list, they would have been as big as Netflix. It wasn't about piracy. It was never about "free". It was about convenience. People would have paid for it. How the movie, television and music industry never figured this out, and instead tried to fight their consumers by putting artificial & obsolete roadblocks in their path, is amazing. Both of these 100+ year old industries got their ***** handed to them by companies that either didn't exist (Spotify, Netflix) or had nothing to do with either industry (Apple) prior to digital piracy. It's incredible how that happened. But a great lesson in idiocy.

  25. I use HorNet CLMS quite often. It sits in between a plugin in order to keep the volume the same so that the volume doesn't mess with the perception of sound quality, cause you know that when you hear the audio louder, it naturally sounds better. This plugin keeps you from getting fooled! I also use HorNet Normalizer plugin a lot!

  30. The samples in BFD really are terrific. But, if you're used to (or rely on) the user-friendliness of Toontrack products, and value the sheer range/editability of midi grooves, I don't think you'll have the patience for BFD3. I didn't get on with the gui at all, and trying to make it do what I wanted to just sucked the fun out of making music for me. Obviously, others may have very different views. In particular, I recall folks who hook up electric drum kits to VSTs being pretty stoked about the playability of BFD3 (esp cymbals, I think).

  31. There's no need to "write" rests in the PRV. A rest is simply an absence of a note. Take the following phrase: This is how it looks like in the PRV: The PRV works in exactly the same way as an old Piano Roll Player piano does... ... i.e. it only has holes for where it has to play a note, and the length of the hole is how long the note is held down. It doesn't need to be told not to play one. Drawing a note in the PRV is the exact equivalent of the holes in a piano roll.

  32. If I could download a car I would totally do it. Often. Quite often actually. But I always found that "you wouldn't steal a car would you?" kinda funny. As if duplicating a digital file is the same as duplicating a car. If duplicating a car was easy as pirating a Game of Thrones episode, literally half the world would have a Ferrari, and an entire new department of government would be formed to investigate the illegal use of the Star Trek replicator.

  35. Most of these are free I depend on the You Lean Meter because it is defiantly more sensitive to true peak readings. All the other meters will show exactly what you set you brick wall limiter to but the You Lean always catches microscopic overs. Example. Brick wall set for -1.0 db All meters/ analyzers including Cakewalk will show -1.0 db. You Lean will show -0.8 or even -0.6 db. The paid version is worth it's weight in gold. And I use it on not just masters but everything I do, including my Tutorials for You Tube. The paid version allows Drag and Drop of any audio or movie files. in seconds you have your LUFS and the true peak reading. You only need one instance on a project. I always have it on the master bus but I can drag and drop any of the audio track in the project to it. I will drag and drop my guitar and vocal tracks as I work to analyze what the loudness is. Loudness tells you a lot more than peak does. You can have a vocal track that shows it's almost over but the LUFS are only -20db. A quick search for the peaks that are causing this, pull them down, and now the same track without a compressor is at -16db LUFS. Add a compressor and push it even more. Other real good analyzers I like, All are free from Plugins4free Analista MAnalyzer. Vox in go has a few, Span, Correlometer dpMeter5 Krame MS Meter mvMeter VU2 ISOL8 - this is a new one for me and has become a favourite.

  41. I use iZotope's Insight, but that's overkill and $$. The Youlean loudness meter is probably your best choice, primarily because it's free. For $39 you can get the "Pro" version, which adds a few nifty features, but the free version is all you really need. Another freebie that everyone should have is Voxengo SPAN. Although a spectrum analyzer, it does have decent metering and can be set for K-system metering. The K-system was a precursor to LUFS, and I used it for many years until EBU R-128 came along. The K-14 standard is nearly equivalent to the LUFS-14 standard.

  42. In practice, trying to fight piracy with anti-piracy measures is a losing game in most cases. Eventually, your carefully crafted scheme is circumvented and you have to divert more money and resources towards that instead of improving the product...And that's when you don't develop measures which harm legitimate customers because the crack outright bypasses the measure, or removes encryption schemes which cause performance overhead and so on. Looking at how much money Native Instruments makes per year, I question if piracy is really harming them. Or other large companies. Not that I'm advocating for piracy, but you gotta question at which point software issues are either piracy or an excuse used by companies to justify lack of improvements and such.

  45. I really can't get my head around what Deskew are trying to achieve here. Can you imagine buying a dell laptop on sale from Amazon, you take delivery and turn it on, then a pop-up appears saying you can't download any firmware updates until you pay the difference between the price on Amazon and the Dell website? This is essentially what Deskew are asking for... absolutely crazy! It's a real shame as I've been an evangelist for this app - if you play live with VSTs it's the best solution, period. What is weird is they seem to realise they are pissing off customers who bought on a sale from PA, but don't care. I've bought version 3 and 4 in full from PA in the past, but now I'm a second class citizen and expected to stump up more cash for V4 which I've already purchased? Not exactly an inviting offer is it... Really hope they've got their sums right, it's a very niche product which is excellent at what it does, so I hope they continue to survive and do well... pissing off paying customers doesn't sound like the best approach, but hey, what do I know?

  46. In a massively absurdly oversaturated market it was just a matter of time until price wars brought priceless down to rock bottom level. This means smaller developers who have have significant overhead will be eliminated, because they can't price compete and likely never sell enough products at traditionally "normal" prices to stay in business. In this environment, small companies REALLY have to think hard about what products they want to develop. Because anything that is even remotely "generic" or remotely similar to products from companies that have a) ginormous marketing teams b) ability to sustain rock bottom prices, will be a problem. ISW does have unique products - that do fall into niche territory (Shreddage series, Tokyo Scoring Strings), but they are really at the mercy of companies like, say, Native Instruments, that can run a 50% off sale offering consumers a terrabyte of sample libraries and a gazillion effects / tools, including guitars and orchestra, for $600 (current sale price for Komplete 14 Ultimate). Or a Creative Cloud subscription for $200 a year. Tokyo Scoring Strings sells for $449. This is an absolutely brutal market for small developers. As a note - Spitfire Audio and Orchestral Tools get away with their absurd prices because their marketing is at Apple-tax levels, and their you-will-pay-an-absurd-premium-hipster-black-turtleneck-level-pretentiousness is unrivaled.

  47. Hey guys - owner of ISW here. This is abusing our system. Period. This year and the last have been difficult for us with a general pullback across the music gear industry in demand. We've implemented various discounts for our customers as a gesture of a good will and to help people enjoy our instruments through rocky economic times. At the same time, despite that pullback in demand, we've created new jobs (with benefits) in the last 2 years and I'm personally committed to avoiding layoffs at all costs. In 2022 I took a 75% pay cut to ensure the well-being of my employees. Because of the behavior here, we have to disable this discount entirely, so nobody will get it, and we may have to disable others as well. I'll now have to spend my time (currently on my one vacation I get per year) and money researching how to solve a problem that folks here created. These are resources that could have been spent on product updates or developing new instruments, that we now have to spend preventing abuse. Please think about your actions next time you do something like this to a tiny business like us.
