  1. For those of you with significant others, I always thought of Valentine's Day as self-preservation. You better get them something... or else! 👎😡💔

  2. Assuming you mean drawing MIDI notes in the PRV, if a new note starts more than a measure later than the end of the previous one, Cakewalk will start a new clip by default. It's not a bug; it's just how it works. My guess is it's a holdover from the early days when all MIDI notes were grouped by measures, and that was the finest resolution at which you could edit. In any case, you can just select the entire track and Bounce to Clips to combine them. Or you can slip-edit the end boundary of the clip out in the Track View in advance to encompass notes that will be further out. Or you can enter notes the old-fashioned way - in real time with a MIDI controller - and each take will be a contiguous clip, not matter how long you pause between notes. I started with Cakewalk for DOS 2.0 in 1988, so yes, I'm biased. I have spent some time getting to know Studio One, and dabbled a bit in Reaper. Both took several days to get even slightly comfortable with and I had to check the documentation constantly to get the most basic things done. This is the nature of DAWs. They are way too complex to be 'intuitive'. And they all have bugs, and features that are more or less 'polished' than the equivalent feature in some other DAW.

  3. Assume you are serious... Music production software is not "simple". The framework is oriented toward the intuition and intention of musicians and studio engineers. Also it is oriented toward "conventional" way to produce music, so record from external sources (audio and MIDI) and then edit the result. Independent from the DAW, you will need to learn it first. Especially if you want understand why the behavior of something does not match your expectation. Cakewalk is one of convenient to use and simple to understand DAWs. But you can try other DAWs. If you want "guided start", try Tracktion. You will get wizard for what you have to do and the view is "left to right, top to bottom" style. For not "record on type" approach, try Ableton Live. And in case you want scripts and "hard to crash" thing, try REAPER. But there is no "I am the best and the only" DAW.

  6. I kinda had this experience at first ("oh lord, she's using ASIO4ALL and a 32-bit version of Supermassive and she can't get her VSTi to load because she's trying to install the 32-bit version and getting confused between Program Files and Program Files (x86)"). But in defense of Lorene's style and what I think she's trying to teach (not that she needs any), she bills it as "Learning Cakewalk WITH Lorene." And I think she means it exactly that way, she refers to what she does as "Cakestumbling." It's a TV show of a woman with a sense of humor having fun teaching herself how to use a DAW. I've comforted frustrated newbies by saying "don't worry, I made all those mistakes while I was learning?" (ASIO4ALL, check, 32-bit plug-ins, check, VSTi wouldn't load because I had the path wrong, check). It won't sink in as much as seeing someone make all those mistakes and keep trying, and even keep smiling and laughing at their own frustrations. The message I get is "don't be put off from trying this because you're not a 16-year-old techno wunderkind or a computer or studio veteran, don't be afraid of looking clueless, it's still fun even if you screw something up and have to sort your way out of it." Picked up a valuable trick from her: using Arranger Track to analyze the structure of someone else's song (she used her old band's song as an example). This is something I am struggling with right now and I can say this IS a technique I will try, at least once or twice. I try to promote the forum wherever I can, YouTube, Facebook, whatever.

  7. I don't have a lot of experience with their plugins, but with a short test of some, I really liked the ADverb and the Mangleverb. Maybe I also find some usage for Fluid, Liquid, PhaseTwo and Vapor (especially for fine-tuning synth sounds). The Phosphor synth is not my taste, there are better free synths IMHO.

  9. This forum needs a thread time out that automatically locks threads after at least a year. 6 months would be even better. I end up reading these with out checking the date. Big waste of time and frustrating. If there something in an old thread you wanted then you can simply post the link to the original thread in your OP. Just like if you post links to the old forum.

  10. +1 Element exposes all of the audio & MIDI ports available for any plugin used. That also makes it an excellent troubleshooting tool if you are having difficulty routing a plugin in a DAW, and wish to test it in another context. Plus you can also connect multiple patches from a single plugin output to several other plugin inputs. Very flexible and visual patchcord routing!

You can also still get Tone2 Saurus 3 and updated Pigments 3.5 Unifed factory libraries which I Unified last week. Another user has also Unified the Phase Plant factory library (some minor changes to make to it but it's very useable as is). Download links are here... https://www.pluginguru.com/products/unify-standard/ More details in yesterday's livestream where Skippy also demonstrates some of the new features in the new version of Unify, 1.8 which is due out on Thursday.

  14. They probably like a majority of users have never seen this forum. Seems more people using Facebook and other social media type sites than user forums now. It's a bit of a shame because the help you get on facebook is not the same quality as you will get here. On one post I read about 25 real bad answers to the persons issue. No wonder so many new users end up all screwed up. But that said I post my videos to about 4 different Facebook Cakewalk groups and that is where my view count comes fromm, not from here. I only post here because I'm a die hard fan of our forum and I find it's much easier to post a video than type out 6 paragrphs of what was probably already written in the documentation, right! . So I can see why people who make Cakewalk tutorials might not bother posting here. No traffic. A critique of the videos- The first with the lady was of the type that drives me bonkers. Takes 15 minutes to teach a 3 minute lesson because they are trying too hard to be interesting people and not teachers. I liked the second guy he was to the point more or less.

  15. ****updated february 20, 2022**** greetings....this is the updated version with the biggest change being the excellent suggestion by PhonoBrainer to remove the hi hat, which really was functioning like a metronome, and gives the arpeggiated guitar notes the rubato space they need (yes, i had to look up the meaning of rubato and i am now a better person for doing that!! 😀....thanks so much Tom!!!! 👍🎵), so, without further ado.... link: https://larryterrano.bandcamp.com/track/ionia-ambient-pop-music ******************************************************************************* Greetings!!....here is a re-recording/redux of the first song i posted here back in september of last year....Ionia (ambient pop music)....observations, critiques, questions and comments appreciated 🎼🎸🎹🔊: ^^please use above link^^ DAW: Cakewalk by Bandlab pc: windows 10, i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz, 8GB ram, acoustic and electric guitars, bass guitar, focusrite scarlett solo, arturia minilab mkII, arturia analog lab 4 lite, CbB effects reference speakers: M-Audio BX3 Special Thanks to Mike at Creative Sauce on You Tube whose incredible videos on how to use CbB made this possible

  17. Just wanted to highlight that this deal is still active, and unlike some other valentines day deals this is as low as AudioRealism has ever gone so it's as good a time to buy as any. Started feeling an old school techno / hardcore / happy hardcore vibe over the weekend after demoing ABL3 against the new Zhun Audio Zerobox and ended up buying the AudioRealism complete bundle 2 to get access to the sweet sweet hoovers in Redominator as well. But if you were only after a couple of these, after purchasing the first you receive crossgrade offers of about 42% off via a link in the license email that stack with the ACID2022 code to get the individual plugins at about 1/3rd of the normal price! ADM came with a crossgrade offer for ABL3 ABL Pro came with a crossgrade offer for ABL3 ABL3 came with a crossgrade offer for ADM and ReDominator

  18. Yes, Reaper is without a doubt the DAW with the most comprehensive routing ability! I even paid for a license to support the developer, even though Reaper is not my daily go-to. But Reaper always seems to just work when I am having issues with a plugin in another DAW. That said, IMO Element is even more flexible and faster if you don't need a DAW for tracking at the moment, and just want to wire up some instruments and plugins. Could also be used for live playing because it will allow MIDI in from hardware controllers. Save and recall your sessions. Element can also be used as a [VST / VST3] plugin in your DAW as a wrapper to host plugins [AU / VST / VST3 / AAX Plugin] that your DAW cannot host.

  24. Just in case others are wondering, Element is Juce based and you use Projucer to start the process. I have compiled it multiple times under Windows. I have also paid for the precompiled download a few times just to support the developer.

  25. Instead of asking the obvious (yes, depending on what you do and your system configuration, other DAWs can have the same if not more problems. CbB is actually very stable since the last few years the development has strongly focussed on ironing out bugs instead of introducing new potential bug introducing new features), and assuming that you did watch the right, essential tutorials in order to be able to start well, ... why don't you provide your hardware and software specs and describe what you're trying to do and point out your exact problems? There are plentiful of very skilled users on the forum that are more than welcome to help you out when you encounter a specific problem! Just for the record: CbB is a fully featured professional DAW that finds its right place among the top DAWs with a support team that actually listens to feedback and quickly implements bug fixes and improvements whenever possible. I have not seen this kind of interaction with any of the other DAWs.

  26. Wow - you seem to set yourself up for any possible language that may offend you so I'm not sure you'll believe anything you read about Cakewalk but I will try. I have been using Cakewalk since the time of it being a midi only platform back in the 90's. The transformation to Cakewalk By Bandlab has been amazing and I love it. I've read about other DAWs and realize two things. 1. All DAWs have flaws (wow I like that, lol). 2. They all record digital audio the same way. What you do with it is totally up to you. And btw, what kind of expectation do you have from a completely free DAW that has so much to offer? Yes all DAWs are different. I've recorded 15 tracks of audio simultaneously for 30 minutes with no issues. I use third party plugins as well as the included plugins and instruments. Basically your computer determines the complexity level of Cakewalk or any other DAW for that matter. Be sure to set up your settings correctly to ensure the best possible performance before judging it. This makes all the difference in the world. I hope this is some help to you and your experience with Cakewalk.

  28. I use cakewalk for a long time. Former Sonar user. I use other daws Studio one and reaper mainly at the moment, because I miss some features in cakewalk that are important for me. I basically tried all, and I mean really all daws there are. And I can tell you, there are not much more bugs nore is cakewalk more complicated than one of the payed or free competitor daws. Infact the workflow is very convinient for beginners. But I have to admit the GUI can look overwhelming especially for complete new beginners. If you get the basics of cakewalk, you can try every other "mixer style based daw" (like Studio one, cubase, reaper, pro tools, digital perfomer, Logic) because the workflow is very similar. You will be surprised how stable and user friendly and logically structured cakewalk actually is in the world of DAWs.

  30. Not the worst time for maintenance before Valentine's, is another way to look at it. As a sidenote, the part of me that just wants to watch the world burn gets exhilarated by the fact that Valentine's - the day you're supposed to celebrate love and friendships - has become yet another day of self-indulgence.

  31. Your issues are nothing to do with Cakewalk being free. It is a fully featured, constantly improving software programme previously retailing at around £400 which has excellent developer support including in this forum. People here will be only too pleased to help with any issues you have - just provide more detail. I've never experienced the problems you outline in years of using Sonar Home Studio and now CbB and I learned everything from scratch

  32. And I thought people around here knew how to use the Internet. Well, maybe they do but are just lazy bustards (TM). Thanks to abacab who is more thoughtful than me, people can immediately find this gem. I use it for a number of things, but especially if I don't want to fire up my DAW. It loads quickly and can host pretty much any VST2 and VST3 including audio and MIDI effects. A cool feature is that you can drop any plugin on it and it will use the plugin right away without having to do a complete scan of all your plugins. Doing so also adds the plugin to your plugin list. You can use it in a live setting but it also has a VST so you can use it in your DAW. It has very flexible routing options including routing MIDI between plugins. I can easily have one MIDI plugin like Cthulhu or Scaler feeding multiple synths or even have the output of Cthulhu feeding Scaler feeding a plethora of synths for some real mayhem.

  33. It is unclear what you mean by "write some midi stuff." There are many different workflows that constitute writing midi stuff. Perhaps if you enumerate the steps you took that caused unwanted splits, other well-seasoned users can make suggestions that might work better for you. I could be wrong but your original posts seems to be saying, "I'm frustrated with Cakewalk so I'm coming into the community forum and asking Cakewalk users for their 'honest opinion about it compared to other DAWs . . . . ' when I really want to vent and verbally bash Cakewalk." Just a thought, if you want to try to get suggestions for the unwanted splitting midi clips issue, its not too late to try a less combative approach. I have seen users go from having "Well, if you are coming here to trade insults, we'll oblige you" mind set to helpfully offering serious suggestions.

  34. So Ok. You fired up Cakewalk without first watching tutorials or reading the documentation and it doesn’t work like YOU think it should work. Every DAW is about the same as far as learning curve goes. Cakewalk is a top quality DAW used buy many of us for a long , long time. We used to gladly pay the $500 for it only a few years ago. Don’t let the price tag fool you. You are more than welcome to go pay $500 for Pro Tools the so called industry standard and report back to us about how easy it was to use 😬 Go to the tutorials sub forum and start watching and feel free to ask more questions if something isn’t working properly for you.

  44. Yesterday's project was to remix an old song done in Sonar, and I was dismayed that many plug-ins wouldn't load. However, when I inserted current plug-ins to replace the missing ones, the song sounded so much better. So while it's inconvenient having to spend 30 minutes inserting and tweaking plug-ins, at least for me, the effort was worth it.

  45. The move to 64bit started over 15 years ago. Most plug-ins that are still 32bit only are that way because The tools used to create them were 32bit, for example SynthEdit The manufacturer replaced 32bit plug-ins with different products. For example, Cakewalk Sound Center was replace by Rapture Session. The product was discontinued. Regardless of the reason, almost all plug-ins that are 32bit only are pretty old. Due to their age, some plug-ins fail to scan because they violate current Windows security policy. Changing permissions in the registry or drive can fix some scan issues. Installing in non-restricted areas of a drive avoids the drive permissions problem. Some plug-ins have no remedy other than running the DAW as administrator. Bridging was created to buy time for developers and ease the transition for users migrating to 64bit software. It was never intended to extend the life of unmaintained and unsupported plug-ins indefinitely. Relying on unmaintained and unsupported software is not a good idea.
