  6. Just ordered a set of Sennheiser HD 280 headphones and a pair of MIDI cords. The AKG K52's I bought just a few years ago are already shedding the cover from the earmuffs. Plus, I was never happy with the standard 3.5 mm connector with the 1/4" adapter. That is also getting a little loose. Bad on me for not checking before I bought them, but I expected a 'studio' headphone to not have to use an adapter in the studio. At GC, the Sennheisers were the least expensive headphones with a standard 1/4" plug. Got good reviews, though. A little like when I was searching for a MIDI keyboard a few years ago. None of the lower cost examples had MIDI jacks, just USB. I prefer the MIDI cables. I'm happy with what I got, but it was more than I wanted to pay at that time. Thank Goodness for credit! Oh, did you hear it is Bapu's birthday today? 🧁

  9. Dell business laptops, for at least the past 7 years or more, come with a Windows Pro license baked into their motherboards. No need to buy keys or anything like that. I suspect that it's the same with other big laptop manufacturers. Might be the same with their towers. I recently upgraded from an incredibly stalwart Latitude E6410 that someone gave me after it was retired from service at their company. I think it was manufactured in 2011, so it was already 5 years old when I got it. It came with an i5, which I eventually upgraded to an i7. Slower base clock, but DAW's and NLE's love extra cores. It's still fine for that use, but it's heavy, can only accept 8G of RAM and the i7 gives it a battery life of about 1.5 hours on a fresh battery. I liked having the separate nVidia GPU chip, though. Last year plug-in manufacturers started really using DirectX 12, so I was running into ones that wouldn't work, like Kontakt Player 7 and MODO Drum. The latest one is a Latitude 7480, another corporate retiree that I found on CL for $50. It had no hard drive and the battery was shot, but $70 later, it has a 1T Silicon Power (my preferred brand for SSD's and RAM) and a brand new battery. It came with 16G of RAM. Lighter, slimmer, and has a full-featured Thunderbolt port (I have fallen in love with Thunderbolt as a result). Only 2/4 cores, but since it's several generations newer, still better performance (Cakewalk really liked turning off plug-in load balancing for some reason). The screen is smaller than I would like, but you can't beat the price. Cautions about Dell business laptops for audio: Dells in general are notoriously locked down, as befits their intended use as bombproof business boxes. So no overclocking, although with enough BIOS finesse and Windows Fu you can get the CPU into the Turbo zone and pretty much keep it there when plugged in and doing CPU intensive work. Also, and this is crucial for the kind of work we do, they are known for coming back with funky results from LatencyMon. Specifically, the driver ACPI.SYS is an interrupt hog. Look up "Dell laptop latency" and you'll see. I found a trick to at least get LatencyMon to sign off on the 7480, which is in the plugged in high performance power plan, set Maximum and Minimum CPU to 99%. Somehow that lets ACPI.SYS relax a little. I don't really understand why, but it worked. Regarding Dell towers, the locked down BIOS is also a thing, but with BIOS and power plan finesse I managed to nail the 3.4GHz i7-3770 in my Optiplex to 3.87GHz and it never wavers from that. As with all Dells, the case is tank-like. I did replace the power supply with a 500W to accommodate my AMD and nVidia GPU's. Also, and this may be important for DAW use, they offer nothing in the way of fan tuning and control, although I managed to get mine very quiet with some fan replacement. Noctua and BeQuiet fans are $10-12. You can now get an Optiplex with an i7-6770 and 16G of RAM in it for just a little over $200 as a Dell Refurbish on Amazon, probably due to the Windows 11 incompatibility windfall. Throw an nVidia 1060 or 1030 in one of those and it will handle anything you throw at it short of maybe the latest FPS games, although I haven't tried any (not my thing). On my i7-6770 system (home built) my indie adventure/puzzle games look beautiful and run like bandits. For a huge orchestral sample library user, 32G of RAM might be better, but for my use, I was doing okay with the 8G in my old laptop. There are some who seem to look down on acquiring any computer system with a CPU older than gen 11, but the only thing I can think of that that kind of CPU power is needed for is hardcore gaming. I'd ask anyone with a gen 11 CPU: what can't I do on my i7-6770 except meet the requirements for Windows 11? If there is anything, I've yet to find it.

  10. I always bounce Melodyne clips before saving and exiting the project. It was a habit I adopted many years ago, when Melodyne was not as seamlessly integrated into the DAW as it is today. This avoids a lot of potential problems. The wrinkle is that Melodyne is actually its own process and works on files that it created and has stored external to the DAW project, so you have to think of them as temporary files. Once you've rendered (bounced) the clip, though, Melodyne is done with it and everything's safely stored within the Cakewalk project. The best way to invoke Melodyne is via an ARA Region. Right-click the top of the clip you want to edit and select Region FX -> Melodyne -> Create Region FX. When you're done with your edits, return to this same context menu and select Render Region FX.

  25. I checked my PC which has default keyboard shortcuts. Although Tab and Shift+Tab do not map to Next Marker and Previous Marker, you have a good point here--that those functions can be mapped using Preferences [Advanced] > Customization > Keyboard Shortcuts (Global Bindings). Hmmm. The Online Documentation has this: Also, in answer to a different matter we have this: I don't use MIDI binding shortcuts, but maybe those would work to map to marker navigation functions.

  28. Within Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts, it's possible to bind the commands to MIDI notes - including start/stop. However this will start/stop the whole project, not just a specific track. To trigger a specific track, you could use the Matrix view - however, the Matrix view is clip based, so you'd need to make sure that everything on that track is a single clip (i.e. bounce to clip(s) ).

  32. I can think of a few. We live in a mostly rural area where there is limited cell service And internet outside of the small urban area is also expensive and slow because it’s coming from a satellite . So around here there’s plenty of people who can only download or upload when they go to town. Therefore the internet and if it’s available is expensive and especially if you use your monthly allotment of say 20 GB. I used to do all my music stuff at a friends house who had proper bandwidth. Now I have moved to town problem solved. I also know lots of jam rooms are in outbuildings and beyond the wi fi range from the house. Not everyone knows how to run CAT5 cable through the trees

  36. Rex , Beautiful lead vocal tracks and harmony ! Huge vocal space. Are you hard panning harmony's ? I've heard this vocal spread on quite a few of your songs with extensive harmony's , and have wondered about your panning to achieve it. I was a little let down by your choice of the instrument in the keys break. I don't think it "lifted" that section as well as it could have. Still Loved the song and performance .. mark

  40. Your harmonies are GREAT. Is that just you singing? At first, I thought the bassline, or low end was male "mmmms"...and I thought dang, that's super cool. Inspiring work. My only crit is that your opening melody cadence is a bit jarring with the placement of the syllables of 'forever'. The "ver" lands on an off beat in a way that makes me think it's out of time and then the rest of the line finishes without me feeling comfortable. It feels rushed, but the melody is great and the lyrics interesting. It's a small thing - but it stood out to me.

  46. The OP said they have reverb on a bunch of tracks? This is a well documented way to create a muddy mix. Reverb is space. Having a bunch of different spaces in a mix totally confuses the listener unless that is your goal. Best practices is to limit how many reverbs are used in a project and share one instance using a effect send to a reverb buss. Of course this general advice is for most popular types of music and not applicable to all. I’m only mentioning this as newbie’s might get the idea it’s normal to put a different reverb on each track. The pro channel has made it way to easy to make this mistake.

  47. You could try the following: 1. Run RegEdit 2. Within RegEdit, locate Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\Cakewalk 3. Rename the Core subkey to _Core 4. Run Cakewalk This will force Cakewalk to act as is if it is installed for the first time.
