  1. A holiday thanks for everyone who makes this forum so friendly and valuable. I've been using online music-making forums since the early days of KVR and I find no other music-making forum as friendly, helpful and user-centric as this forum, and specifically, I'm thinking of the Deals subforum. Unsurprisingly, @cclarry is the first person who comes to mind when I think of this subforum. No one else has worked as hard at making this subforum so valuable and stocked with deals as cclarry. I've told him many times that he could stop posting deals and retire as an all-time Cakewalk Forum MVP and Hall of Famer -- the Michael Jordan of the forum. The other MVP and Hall of Famer is @Wookiee, the forum moderator. Like cclarry, Wookiee isn't paid to do what he does, but he does it better than most paid moderators, IMO. Woookie is a volunteer who helps this community out of the goodness of his heart. He keeps the forum on track, and in the rare moments when someone exhibits less than civil behavior or goes into undesirable territory, Wookiee is there to keep this community healthy and he's clearly doing a great job. If you've ever interacted with Wookiee, you know that he's very helpful, kind and considerate. I couldn't think of better qualities for a moderator, a community member -- or for a human being in general. Beyond our MVPs, we have a community -- it's not big, but it's big enough, IMO -- of really nice, helpful and encouraging people that make this forum great. Personally, there's been a good deal of people who've gone out of their way to provide helpful advice when I ask for advice on effects plugins, on sample libraries or post a song and solicit mixing advice. I want to give a big holiday thank you to all of you -- whether you've shared a deal, posted a funny remark or story, shared insights, gave a recommendation for or against a plugin or library, encouraged someone else or taken a thread in a new direction (sure, at some forums that call that "off-topic" or "derailing a thread," but here, it's an honored tradition; we'd say something, but anyone could expose the regulars here as hypocrites in a few clicks!). Whatever you celebrate, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc., I wish you and your family the happiest and healthiest of holidays and all the best in the year ahead.

  29. Back in the 70's and 80's, people looked back on the 50's. In the 90's and 00's, the 60's and 70's were in. Now it's the 80's and 90's turn (you may have heard that they're doing a That 90's Show). Just the usual - 40-50 something looking back on their golden years and making them fashionable. For a lot of people I guess, tastes are settled by the time they reach their early 20's. Personally, I'm fond on the 70's and very early 80's (the previous decade always lingers for a few years into the next). But I find lots of things that I like musically in every decade, although not as much in the late 10' and 20's. I am an old grumpy man, now. My reflex would be to say that I am not a huge fan of the 80's globally, although time has made a lot of things more palatable. I had no taste for mainstream music back then - for me it was about Metallica, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Voivod, and all those guys. And the only movies I cared about were horror movies, so I'd never seen most of the big popular movies of the 80's until very recently - things like The Breakfast Club, The Goonies, Ferris Bueler and all that commercial stuff... I already thought fashion sucked back then so I dressed all black and wore black jeans and t-shirts or shirts. Some things like simplicity and the colour black never go out of fashion. Still, after all these years, even through the mainstream culture, I can get a glimpse and a taste of the things that I enjoyed during those years. One thing I do remember is that movies and tv shows always gave a very poor representation of "alternative" cultures. So if Hollywood made a movie with some youth listening to heavy metal or punk (usually a caricature of them), they typically* didn't secure the rights to actual metal music we liked. They'd pay some guy to write a generic approximation that sucked hard. That's one of the reasons I was so blown away when I watched The Crow and heard the soundtrack the first time - these were bands that I loved, like Nine Inch Nails, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and The Cure. No generic copies. Things had started to change. *There were rare exceptions of course.

  31. Well... not so great after all. Just got an email from ADSR: To compensate, they say they are giving me some free soundpacks and an offer on their drum machine product for the same $12.50. Which I would probably go for if I didn't already have drum machines coming out of my ears. The software is still working on my machine. I already had Nectar 3 essentials; the main reason I wanted plus was to get Melodyne. So I'm hoping that even if they revoke the Nectar 3 plus license, I'll still get to keep the Melodyne license. We'll see. I'm disappointed that my lucky deal didn't work out, but not outraged or upset. I'm not going to write nasty emails back or boycott ADSR. I think instead I'll go spend some money on the Spitfire sale.
