  3. This is soooo true. I think when I started putting stuff out on streaming platforms like Spotify and iTunes the payments were higher. I might have seen a few bucks here and there. Nowdays it's just a loss making venture for me. And it's so un-transparent. The artist really has no idea if the stats are true or false. To give you an idea. I've got music being played by DJs now. I'm 'apparently' in the top 5 on one playlist. If I look at my Spotify stats I haven't had a single listen for a month. Despite all the gesturing and bragging on line, I would wager that most artists are not even getting gas money from streaming platforms, and I don't know how honest those services are being. If anything, I think it's reverting back to how the old radio playlists used to work. Back when I had my music on 'real' radio, I signed up with the PRS in the UK to collect. I remember having to contact radio stations myself and get copies of their playlists to send to the PRS to prove that my music had been A-listed to national radio to get paid what I was owed. There was a time when radio stations published their playlists online. When they stopped doing that the onus fell on the artists to track them down, and if you didn't have a manager or a team doing it for you.... Good bye money. I feel the streaming platforms lack of transparency is leading to the top earners earning ever more and the bottom feeders losing out. Bandcamp on the other hand has always been good to the artists in that respect. Better than most labels (and I'm speaking as an artist who was once signed to a label), when someone buys an album, the artist gets the lion share. That would have been unheard of with the old label system where the artist usually started off in debt to the label. I hope Bandcamp stay true to their initial mission statement and it doesn't transform into another content library for streaming platforms or video games in the style of Epidemic Sounds. That would be the death of Bandcamp as it is now. And on a final note, you know those people who preach that the internet is a utopia in which the artist can finally be free and make money from their work? I'd like to stamp on their family jewels. The internet hasn't freed anyone. It's just redefined the prison boundaries.

  4. I hold a fairly positive attitude, but I think the most important word is "CAN." As throughout the history of getting paid for creating music, there's no guarantee of "WILL" or "HOW MUCH." "The internet" is no more responsible for ripping off musicians and listeners than "the radio spectrum" was 25 years ago. Parasitic organizations will spring up no matter how the information gets around, All the internet is is a faster, cheaper, and more direct way for information to get from one place to another. I will say that the channels that the internet has opened up have made it more possible for small-timers to connect with an audience (and even earn money) than before such channels existed. It's not created any goldmines or licenses to print money, but what ever has? The idea that one person, or a small group of people together could earn more than (or even) a comfortable living playing music is one that only had traction for a small period of human history, starting in the late 1950's. It's always been difficult to make a living from creating music. It still is. If the only difference is that now it's easier for me to discover new artists that I love to listen to and buy their music in high-resolution form while allowing them to keep 90% of what I pay instead of 12%, that's a big improvement in my eyes.

  6. Uh oh, you had to go and launch hater's kryptonite. So far we've heard about how Bandcamp is supposedly on a "path to irrelevancy," yet my understanding of irrelevance in such things as entertainment and retail requires something else becoming relevant in place of the thing that has become irrelevant. So, those with a disdain for Bandcamp, please tell us to which music distribution outlet we should flock to instead. Perhaps one that accepts Venmo or some other form of payment more popular amongst the youth of today?

  10. Today's iTunes, Spotify, et al=yesteryear's major labels and Clear Channel-controlled radio. The point I was trying to make is that compared to 25 years ago, we have better alternatives. The difference is that rather than having to pay for CD manufacturing and then trying to find some way to peddle them to stores, with Bandcamp, an artist can issue a song or album and start selling it right away. It's up to them to promote it however they want to. Bandcamp also has room for labels who can act as curators and promoters. I'd also like to add that whatever audio CODEC's they're using for their web, iOS, and Android players is excellent as far as sound quality, and that's another very important thing to me. The last time I tried listening to the biggies, the sound was a transient-smeared mess. Whether this is due to their CODEC or passing the songs through their automated de-flavorizer, I don't know. I work too hard on getting my spatial elements to work to have it messed up by some service's reprocessing.

  13. As an alternative opinion, I view AmpleSound as the best an OrangeTree as a useful 2nd. In particular, I can more easily force which string a note is played on, which makes those combo open/closed chords up the neck sound pretty darn real.

  15. If resale on software wasn't basically non-existant, it would be a lot easier to justify $75 given the other stuff you could sell off that this will replace. This is the only channel strip that doesn't feel compromised in some significant way to me. If they were able to add a pre-amp section with some saturation varieties it would be practically perfect. And this has very low CPU usage all things considered. Don't run a trial on this one if you are looking fo avoid the purchase that is for sure!

  20. Some of NI's instruments completely break the rules of MIDI, e.g. using CC#1 as a volume control is madness. CC#1 is defined as modulation, not volume... and CC#1's default value is zero. It's in the MIDI spec. So the question is, should Cakewalk start ignoring the MIDI spec just because NI does? There's probably some extra work we could do to be a bit more selective about which controllers get zero'd, but that's just a workaround. Given that NI have already made the decision to break the spec, the best thing to do is manually add a CC#1 to the beginning of your MIDI clips in the event list.

  24. I jumped from XP to Windows 7 then to Windows 10. As much as I loved XP, I don't miss it. No matter how lean and clean you ran your system, something got corrupted. It was general routine maintenance to format and reinstall XP about every year or so. It was as if there was a memory leak or something that slowly corrupted it over time. I've never had to do that with Windows 7 or 10. I'm still running my initial install of Windows 10 that I did from disc 6 or 7 years ago IIRC? I just let it do it's updates and it does it's thing and it's happy. There has been a couple of times the update caused some flaky behavior, but they were aware of it and resolved it very quickly. I really can't complain about Windows since 7. A friend of mine ran Sonar on Vista and ME and never had trouble. People are always worried about privacy and resist doing updates, but in my experience, if you just let it do what it wants it actually runs really well. They already have everything they need to know about you the split millisecond you get on to the net the first time from any PC on your home network. Microsoft and Google aren't the ones you really need to worry about. It's the people hiding in the shadows that steel the info they collect by way of you installing a virus or tricking you in to giving it to them that are the problem. MS and G seem to do their best to try and block those people. At least that's how I see it. IMO.

  26. Wait, just to be clear, I went through those legal checkboxes on their site pretty quickly. I wasn't completely clear on whether I was turning over my first born male child, or both of my kids, as well as my soul, for eternity. I think it was just the first born male child along with my soul. But I only had one legal class in college, so I would appreciate if someone with expertise in this area could weigh in so I could better understand what I've gotten myself into in my quest for free sample libraries.

  27. I'm sure I've said this before, but the major three stumbling blocks for using Linux as an audio platform are: Lack of professional Audio Driver support Lack of native plugin support Lack of supported DAWs ( Reaper / MixBus being the main exceptions ) FWIW - I love Linux as a platform... just not as a DAW platform.
    2 points
  28. Unless you're running a mess of a machine, Windows 10 does not crash constantly. Why in the world would one choose to move to Linux as a serious DAW platform? It's like taking a 20-year step backward in time. What advantage would it offer? Running Windows 10, we have machines capable of yielding 1ms total round-trip latency. Running Windows 10, we have machines capable of delivering 4000 simultaneous stereo voices of disk-streaming polyphony. We currently reap the benefits of ~30 years of PC DAW development. I put Linux based DAWs in the same light as building a Hackintosh. Sure... it's a "technical-puzzle" that can be fun to solve... but it's not a real Mac. A Linux based DAW is decades behind in infrastructure/development/support/etc. It's just not worth a developer's time/effort... to develop something that's lacking from the start... and has limited profitability.

  32. All of these songs are available on CD or MP3. I bought one titled "Songs Around the World 10 Year Anniversary (Remastered) Edition". It's been my falling-asleep music for the past few nights. Good stuff. My favorite cuts are the not-so-familiar tunes, e.g. Biko. However, last night I awoke with a start after realizing they'd altered the harmonies on the chorus of "All You Need is Love". Specifically, they took out George Harrison's descending part. It's a small thing, but I don't think I can fall asleep to that one anymore. It's like having one dark pixel on your display: once noticed you cannot un-see it.

  37. I got the email today, but Larry beat me to it, as usual! 😂 And yes as stated, this is Kontakt Player friendly, so full Kontakt is NOT required!!! This $95 deal is a great discount for 48 hours only! Got this on sale last year, and it is amazing! Try using a MIDI generator such as Wotja to drive it for some interesting evolving textures & patterns! Bioscape even includes a preset folder with ASMR sounds. [EDIT]: One thing not so obvious about this player UI at first look, is that there are actually 4 sample slots, [A:B], and [C:D], so that you can toggle the view of 2 of them back and forth with that button in between [A:B]. Plus you can load your own samples by drag and drop into each slot, so this also makes a handy sample player where you can add modulations and FX processing to your samples! Here is a video overview of some of the new v1.4 sounds:

  44. First day puppy-sitting on my own. I had this idea that I'd leave the door open to my garage/office/studio and he could freely wander in and out. Preferably mostly out. Too many things to chew on in here. So there's the door wide open but where does he choose to take a dump? On my carpet, of course. At least he's been running around cleaning up all the cobwebs from the far corners of the room. Yeh, I could bring in the shop vac, but my theory is that cobwebs, if allowed to accumulate, provide additional acoustical absorption.

  48. What made Reid's thread -- this thread -- special and what the folks negatively complaining don't appreciate, is the camaraderie, kindness and support shown in this thread. Reid has long shown himself to be a very helpful part of this community. This is post mortem analysis, because this thread was attacked and is now completely derailed, as was the attacker's intent -- as he recently did on a thread for a small developer out of Poland aiding relief efforts in Ukraine. One could point to the persistent forum rulebreaking, the infusion of politics regurgitating the propaganda of a brutal murderous dictator the complainer in chief in this thread has done in this forum -- the level of hypocrisy is ridiculous and I've never reported his policy breaking posts even once. Just as he destroyed another thread helping victims in Ukraine, he effectively derailed and ended this thread. I think, in the end, after decades of leading, consulting and writing about social media, that kind of behavior is toxic to an online community and, in the case of this thread, it attacked a kind spot in this community all because of one overly controlling hypocrite who doesn't care the least about complying with forum rules when he's promoting propaganda for a brutal dictator. Just as we many of us have morally given Larry support and encouragement when he goes on tangents and shares his personal/financial struggles, the best of a community is revealed in how we support others, as was exemplified in this thread. In any event, yeah, this is a deals forum, but this community is made up of people and I think people supporting one another is still a beautiful thing and a great part of this community. It's what has kept me coming back since the earliest days of the original forum.
