  2. The problem with HALion, and it's a big one, is that it's such a beast that you would have to stop making music for a long time just to learn everything that's in it. It's like exploring the presets in Omnisphere or trying out all the instruments in Komplete 12. I think that people get it and don't explore it because it's too much. They'll try the guitars and decide they have better guitars and move on. I've spent many weeks trying out the various FlexPhrasers on different guitar-type instruments and pianos, and I don't feel I've scratched the surface. When you start stacking pianos on top of guitars you can get some amazing results. And then I moved to a new music computer and I lost all my presets! Well I know how to make them now. Anyway, imagine combining various synth sounds with flexphrases... That could keep you busy forever. And I want more of them! 😀 I also watched some videos on making your own instruments and did some explorations. It's kind of like Falcon, you can take any feature and turn it into a knob. Only Falcon has one knob and HALion has a whole set of knob and slider and switch designs. Just drag them in. Make your own interface. I never did much with this. And I never used any of the features to automate sampling, because I don't do that. I will take the HALion guitar strummers eventually and put them in my template next to the other strummers I own. I'll see how they stand up.

  3. I'm testing a new prototype. It's a "micro-tower" (mini-ITX) that has a handle (aluminum case). CPU is a i9-9900k with all 8 cores locked at 5GHz. Pair this with a 15.6" 10-point multi-touch monitor (essentially a laptop display with multi-touch capability). Put the multi-touch monitor and your audio interface in a 2U laptop rack case (rolling- easy transport and quick setup). Connect video and audio cables between the rack and micro-tower... and you're ready to go. All the power of a fast desktop... none of the limitations of a laptop... and runs near dead-silent. I use Ableton Live when playing gigs (trigger samples and to host virtual-instruments). I'm excited about this particular build... because I have all the speed of my studio DAW... in a form-factor that's practical for live use.

  4. What I can never understand about PA is when you click on the "Image" it shows a big pic of some DAW and the plugin inside that. To me that makes no sense. If I want to see a DAW, I'll go to that website and look at their images!! IOW, if your going to show an image that bi, make it all of your plugin!!

  5. @Canopus Thanks. I've logged the scroll bar inconsistency. Unfortunately, it might be a while before we get to it since we're very busy working in other areas of CbB right now. That said, we're hoping to give the UI some much needed attention later this year.

  8. An oldie but goodie- Voxengo is happy to announce the release of the next major version 3.0 of its Boogex plugin, a free guitar amplifier and cabinet simulation plugin for professional music production applications. The plugin is available in AAX, AudioUnit, VST and VST3 plugin formats, for macOS and Windows computers. This version features the following changes: * Implemented the "DynaCab" dynamic convolution technique. * Added the preset list sorting function to the preset manager. * Redesigned the knob image. * Extended the "Color Editor" with color modifiers. * Added the "Gray Blue" color scheme. * Added the "Amp" enable switch. * Now Boogex can be used as a plain stereo convolver when the "Amp" stage is disabled, and the "Pre EQ Mix" set to 100. Voxengo Boogex and other audio plugins can be downloaded at the Voxengo web site: https://www.voxengo.com/product/boogex/

  9. Recording stuff so intuitive - everything names properly - if doing recording/stop/recording/stop - it's name Recording 1, Recording 2 - If it's takes with many recordings, it's Recording 1 Take 1, Recording 1 Take 2, Recording 2 Take 1 etc. - all takes remains with latest on top - even the one considered the active one. In StudioOne I felt like fighting a windmill with these simple things, so you feel in control and organized in Cakewalk. Some inconsistent Layer and take naming, and activating one take - it's removed from list and swapped around so you have no clue after a while what was last takes. And Cakewalk has proper track templates - used in a flash, big timesaver Audio on all outs from VST instruments - how it should be - and very good help doing automation later, not looking at just midi something. Video has thumbnails. Markers has this clever approach each marker can be anchored in time or MBT. - really good use of just one marker bar and doing video. FX bay in track view - not needing inspector or console to see what is there. MFX bay for midi tracks(wish for also allow VST midi plugins please vote or comment here Grouping controls is in another universe, and freedom beyond both StudioOne and Cubase - any control can be part of a group - a fader can run a knob if you want. You have full sysex support both with manager or embedded as recorded. All midi recorded and kept as is - and only by own conversion do you get automation from it(StudioOne is useless here, you cannot record live midi CC). And this was just from the top of my head....thanks Bandlab for keeping this fine daw in progress....

  14. This works for me. But it is awkward. But Select - Shift dragging to move or Ctrl dragging to copy works for multiple notes with Select tool. You must press Shift or Ctrl before clicking. It is, however, a bit of a mystery where the notes are being moved to exactly. I just get randomly flickers rectangles that seem to want to indicate where the notes will be placed, but they disappear in the blink of an eye!

  15. That would be handy. I think the closest thing to that right now is to open the track in both the PRV and Staff view and toggle between them.

  17. Yes, they have great support. I own Symphonic Sketchpad and Melodics Following their instructions I had to download 14 2G files for Sketchpad and 19 2G files for Melodics. I have very fast internet so normally these kinds of downloads take an hour. It took basically an entire afternoon. I admit I stepped away now and then and there were pauses, but normally I don't have to step away. The unpacking was also equally slow.. And that's kind of a start it and walk away type of thing. After all that, I got two new percussion instruments in Sketchpad and new legato for Melodics. I think it would have been cool if they could have figured out a way for me just to download the files that had the percussion, but I guess there are bug fixes in the whole thing so it had to be that way., But in retrospect I wouldn't have done the Symphonic Sketchpad update. I don't need temple blocks and a cymbal swell. Only the Melodics. That's a big deal, improving the legato. I have nothing to report about any of this because I only dragged the unpacked files over at 11:30 PM after I finished my Sunday night TV. It worked flawlessly but no time to play even though I started the process in early afternoon.

  21. Nice chops! Three suggestions: The opening strumming would be better, IMO, as an picked arpeggiated pattern The first guitar solo sounds just a tad fizzy. You might want to EQ that a little. The mix needs more bottom!! These are just my suggestions. Love the track overall! Dan

  25. So nothing on the website (rules, deadlines, how winners are notified, legal notifications, etc.), no info on the email you get when signing up. I'm not saying that the giveaway isn't legit just that as things currently stand it doesn't inspire confidence. Also what you're saying doesn't match what the video says.

  28. You may want to try the 5.3b installer released today, there are graphic fixes but I don't see this specifically noted. If it persists please report it to support with the proper system information and they'll try to recreate and report as necessary to the devs. Thanks!

  29. I also find the Pulse downloader to be unnecessarily slow sometimes. As for Palette, I only have Symphonic Sketchpad, so would Melodics be a good add-on or should I leave it at that ?

  31. Agreed, you would think that they wouldn't miss any opportunity to make money by offering an upgrade from HS3 SE to either HS3 or H6 for existing SE owners while they are doing a Halion sale.

  32. It installs easily using the Steinberg Download Assistant Mesh. It's then a normal VSTi that appears in CbB and there's also a standalone version included. It's just because I have upgraded from the intermediate paid version (Halion Sonic 3) which includes pretty much the same sample set as Halion 6 that I am querying whether I need to download the sound libraries again. It's easy enough to work with and unless you need to edit patches deeply you will probably find Halion Sonic 3 sufficient (when it's on sale). Unfortunately not Larry. Cubase Pro comes with Halion Sonic 3 SE which is a much reduced version compared to Halion Sonic 3. The latter comes with almost the same content library as Halion 6 but lacks the editing (and other stuff listed above). I purchased the upgrade to Halion Sonic 3 a while ago in a sale. I don't like Steinberg's naming convention though as when I talk about Halion Sonic 3 most people assume I mean the free version. They should have renamed Halion Sonic 3 to Halion 6 SE imho.

  33. Your voice and that opening grabbed me and reminded me very much of Nik Kershaw. Really well done tune and the lyrics are fine. Sometimes wives just don't need to know just how dark we really are, lol. These lyrics would have been fine 40 years ago. Agree completely with others that the mix is light on the bass, but otherwise this is a stellar mix. Dan

  34. Thanks @msmcleod I could not tell if this was done by a rule or the staff. The old forum really did not like it when an OP was altered. I guess some form of that rule is still in force.

  35. I think I'm with you on that one. I found that I was pushing the midrange on vocals a little too much with the JBL's until I got a pair of decent grot box speakers that had more mid-range to compare. Once I got Arc 2.5 everything got even easier. The Yammy's would have solved a lot of those issues with their more forward mid-range. I also got a chance to try out the Mackie MR524's and couldn't believe how good they were. The only issue was they didn't have the same depth as the JBL's but they definitely had tighter bass and had high's that extended nicely without being harsh. The mid-range was also just a tad more forward without overdoing it but enough to keep me from pushing things too far. I would trust the new Mackie's more for vocals and guitars but for panning and reverb I think the JBL's would still do better. I was considering keeping the Mackie's since they would be a nice compliment to the JBL 305's but I think I want to stretch a bit and get more low end, thus the search for a decent 6 or 8 inch that could still image well with similar depth as the JBL's but with a more forward mid-range. The HS8's definitely tick those boxes. Thanks for the post, you helped me advert the impulse on this one. I don't think the 308 will be an improvement to what I already have but for someone on a budget looking for their first decent monitor then these will definitely hit the spot.

  40. Douglas Another great rock song though I have to say it sounds a bit like your others. Not that that takes anything away - I like the song and I admire the musicianship - but I think you could vary the formula a little. Love the guitar and vocal as always.

  41. I would back off the reverb on the drums in this production. They get lost in this mix and need to be a more prominent part of the song to drive it along. I’m not sure what’s going on with the Bass because I’m not hearing it well either? Those two elements becoming more prominent in the mix would help this production a lot. Great lyrics, vocals and guitar play!
