  1. Relaxxxx. Why do we get this kind of thing when people suggest adding a new way to accomplish something? "Nooooo, pleeeease, I like it the way it IS! Don't force me to learn a new way to do it!" Nobody has suggested that the current way of doing it should be removed. We're just saying that it's clumsy and nearly impossible to figure out without deep-diving the documentation or Googling or asking how to do it on the forum. Maybe you were able to intuit how without research, but I wasn't and I've seen plenty of other users who also found it obtuse and frustrating. Me, I hate deleting markers in Cakewalk because I'm always afraid that I'm going to hit Del at the wrong moment and delete a clip or a plug-in or something. Every time I do it, it makes me clench up. This is 5 years and 11 months after I learned how to do it (it took me a month of using Cakewalk to get around to learning how to do it). I've been asking for years for Delete Marker to be added to the dialog that pops up when you right click on a marker. For those people who like clicking on a marker, holding, then pressing Del to delete it, nothing would change. You would be free ignore the fact that there's a way for new users to figure out how to do it without Googling. Which is how I figured out how to delete a marker in Cakewalk. Gave up in frustration, Googled it. Found a post on the old forum responding to someone else who also wasn't able to figure it out. If anyone reading this thinks that experienced DAW users needing to use a search engine to figure out an operation as common as deleting a marker is just par for the course, you're wrong. Yes, there are many operations where it's not out of line to have to consult the manual. Things like setting up Groove Clip Looping and such that exist in every DAW, but usually in different forms. Deleting a marker? C'mon. It doesn't have to be a complete overhaul of the feature or a rethink of the UX philosophy or a retool of the Markers module or view or any such thing. Just add Delete Marker to the context dialog. It's the very kind of thing that context dialogs are meant for.

VSTPlugInNameFormat=0 VST Name VSTPlugInNameFormat=1 DLL Name VSTPluginNameFormat=2 VST Name with DLL name in parenthesis VSTPluginNameFormat=3 DLL Name with VST name in parenthesis So you want to make sure it says: VSTPlugInNameFormat=1 I can remember if changing this needs a plugin rescan or not.

  4. I've been complaining about this for years. IMO, it should be in the Insert menu. Project would be the last place I'd think to look. I hoped Sonar might be an opportunity to clean things up in the Global Menu, but so far, no go. BTW, I like your theme. 😉

  7. This is dope! The guys from Samplicity are giving away their highly acclaimed impulse responses from the Bricasti M7 reverb unit for free. These files can be used in convolution plugins that can read IR files in Wave format, for instance Apple Space Designer, Steinberg REVerence, LiquidSonics Reverberate and Audioease Altiverb. The Bricasti Design Model 7 provides the highest level of musicality and ease of control imaginable in a processor dedicated to the task of reverberation. In short: simply one of the best sounding reverbs you can get. Grab the IRs here: https://samplicity.com/bricasti-m7-impulse-response-files/

  10. Before I moved to the Nord Stage 3 (and then Stage 4), I used the OG Montage. Played a lot of gigs with the OG Montage 7. Over time, I grew dissatisfied with it's analog synth capabilities. In particular, it lacked accurate voice-priority/articulation for monophonic analog synth sounds. I got the Stage 3 after seeing Toto. So many touring players were (are) using the Stage 3, there had to be something special about it. The local GC had the Stage 3 in-stock... so I gabbed one. Up till this point, I'd always used workstation type keyboards. I never thought I'd be happy using a "Stage Piano". I was worried that the Stage 3's two Synth Engines wouldn't allow me to cover things like "Here I Go Again" or "Turn Me Loose". Quite the contrary, I was able to program our entire four hour show in two days. Ironically, the Stage 3's two Synth Engines are in some ways more flexible than the three Synth Engines on the Stage 4. ie: To cover the Intro for "Turn Me Loose" (G5add9), we need four notes each playing a sawtooth wave. Each of the Stage 3's Synth Engines allow you to select a pair of waveforms... and tune each waveform individually. I programmed Synth Engine 1 to play the G root and the 5th above it (both sawtooth waveforms). Synth Engine two is playing the G octave above and the 9th above the root (both sawtooth waveforms). On the Stage 4, I have to use all three Synth Engines to achieve the same thing. Each Synth Engine allows a pair of Waveforms... but you're limited to preset 5th and octave intervals. To get a 9th, 3rd, or 7th interval, you have to use a Synth Engine just for that singular note. Nord keyboards are great in many ways... but some limitations are head-scratchers. We get an additional Synth Engine with the Stage 4, but sometimes have to burn it to achieve the same as Stage 3. Another thing to know about the Nord Stage 3 and 4; user-samples in the Synth Engine are single velocity (there are no velocity splits). I was initially extremely concerned about this limitation. A couple years back (playing NYE), we had to cover Garth Brooks' "Friends In Low Places". We're a Rock band... but it was requested. I had to cover the violin melody on keyboard. I was thinking that was going to be pure unadulterated CHEESE. Still had the OG Montage, so I called up it's solo violin sample. OMG, It was awful. No way would I use it. Called up the solo violin sample on the Stage 3... and even though it was a single velocity, it sounded far better. At that point, I stopped worrying about the single velocity limitation. On to the Stage 4: I was one of the first in the US to get the Stage 4 (pre-ordered the day it was announced). Stage 4 basically doubles the user-sample space, adds another Synth Engine, and has expanded effects/processing. As with all keyboards, you don't discover the dirty-details... until you dig deep. Is that an AC/DC song? 🤪 I discovered an issue with broken Portamento on Synth Engine 1 (and it's intermittent). Some have tried to convince me it's a hardware issue... but it's not. If I flash back to firmware 1.06, Portamento always works as expected. Nord introduced a bug at firmware version 1.08... that persists in the latest firmware 1.24. I've contacted Nord twice about this issue. No response/address after many months. It's a real pain when you have to cover things the intro for "Turn Me Loose"... where I have to use all three Synth Engines to generate that G5add9. When the issue happens, Synth Engines 2 and 3 do the two octave glide up... and Synth Engine 1 immediately plays two octaves up (no glide). This isn't as bad as playing a half-step out of key... but it's a close second. 😉 For me, Portamento is a fundamental function. It should be fixed. I should also mention that many of the samples that came with the Stage 3 do not come with the Stage 4. If you're going to migrate, make sure you keep the Stage 3 until you've fully migrated. I had to sample a LOT of the sounds I needed from the Stage 3... and also sampled various instruments to supplement the stock Stage 4 samples. This took a couple months. My transition to the Stage 4 was far more time-consuming than the transition to the Stage 3. The Stage 4 is expensive... and my patience with Nord is wearing thin. Enter the Montage M. Though not as immediate as the Stage 3/4, the UI now offers much more realtime control. Takes time to set it up... but you can control drawbars, percussion, noises of a B3... similar to the Stage 3/4. The M adds AN-X (VA Synth Engine with 16-voice polyphony). This addresses many of my concerns with more authentic analog synth sounds (especially polyphonic). Where AN-X falls a bit short; the Filters sound somewhat generic (not a lot of character)... and monophonic note articulation. Nord's VA mono articulations are more flexible. ie: You can have the Filter (only) retrigger based on velocity... while playing monophonic using Portamento. AN-X can't do that. I use this on the Bridge for the synth melody on "Feels Like The First Time". I'm playing a mono (Moog'ish) synth sound... and I like having subtle control over the timbre of each note (based on velocity). Yes, I could play it without, but it sounds flat/sterile. Ironically, Montage M can do this when using the AWM2 (samples) Engine. The Montage M doesn't have many of the odd limitations that you'd find on a Stage 3/4. Montage M has far more user-sample space (3.7GB vs 1GB on Stage 4 and .5GB on Stage 3) Splits can be anywhere you choose (they're preset on Stage 3/4) User-samples can use velocity splits (limited to a single velocity on Stage 3/4) Programming, the M has far more "granular" control A single Montage M part can consist of up to 128 Elements (loosely an oscillator). Combine that with trigger conditions... and the M is the closest we have to Kontakt in a hardware instrument. If Yamaha would have provided disk-streaming for samples, it would have been game changing. Polyphony was never an issue with the Stage 3/4... even on things like "Here I Go Again" where I use four layers (Acoustic Piano, Electric Piano, Synth Pad, Vocal Pad). The Montage M has even more polyphony (up to 400 voices). Yamaha have released the first version of ESP (a true 1:1 virtual instrument of the Montage M). This version doesn't have full editing (only quick edits). The next release will have full/deep editing. Montage M8x certainly isn't an inexpensive option, but it's $1200 less than the Stage 4. If you get a Stage 4, some of the included samples are pretty lame (brass, choirs, strings, guitars)... especially if you're used to a higher-end workstation. You'll have to supplement these with your own samples (or source from online venders like Narfsounds). For "Addicted To Love", I sampled a brass layer I created in Montage... and layered that with one of the included brass samples. That made a huge difference. For "Dirty Laundry", I sampled the Vox organ I was using from the OG Montage. I didn't have to do this... as the Stage 3/4 have Vox organs... but it sounds more authentic (to the song). If you grab a Montage M, you won't have to sample much (if anything). I have to cover Malcom Youngs guitar on "Thunderstruck"... on keyboard. Didn't want to sound like absolute cheese, so I sampled each of the guitar chords/notes... and put those into the Stage 3/4 and Montage M8x. The Strings, Horns, Choirs on the Montage M sound very good. Acoustic Piano and Electric Pianos are (IMO) pretty much a wash. Nord has distilled the Stage 3/4 to those features which are absolutely necessary. Some limitations leave me wondering why... but I will say that I've always been able to cover what's necessary. The Montage M is going to be a deeper dive. It'll take longer to program... but the possibilities are FAR beyond the Stage 4. If you've ever played the OG Montage 6 or 7, the M7 keybed is identical. If you've played Korg's unweighted Kronos keyboards, the action is identical. IMO, The Montage M is currently the best all-in-one keyboard/workstation. It's not perfect... but none of them are. Downside for many (myself included), the M8x is HUGE and heavy. Stage 4 88 weighs just a little more than the M7... and you have 88 weighted keys. Much prefer weighted keys for playing Piano. M8x action is slightly heavier than the Stage 4. Stage 4's keybed is light enough that you can move pretty fast. In a perfect world, I'd like the Montage M8x in the size/weight of the Stage 4, the Nord's VA Engine, and no odd limitations. If you've read this tome, both keyboards are amazing and annoying. Choose the one who's limitations you can most easily live with (or work around). Hope I haven't confused more than helped! 😁

  15. https://organic-instruments.com/melbourne/ The latest addition to the instrument collection, Melbourne, has been created entirely from field recordings gathered in locations across Melbourne, Australia. The instrument shares the same simple GUI design as the rest of the company’s range, with a set of icons providing access to the core sounds, and an ADSR envelope section joined by a Dynamics module containing Gain, Panning and Velocity Range parameters, and a built-in reverb. As for the content, the Melbourne is equipped with an interesting array of sounds that range from the city’s iconic tram network to the call’s of the smallest species of penguin on the planet! Elemental Studio Update Alongside the launch of the new instrument, Organic Instruments have announced an update to Elemental Studio, a software application that allows users to create their own Elemental Player instruments. With the release of its latest version, the application can directly export virtual instruments as independent VST3, AU and AAX plug-ins, or standalone applications. The export will remove all Organic Instruments branding and requires no coding, offering users an easy way to make their own plug-ins to share and sell under their own brand. Melbourne is available now, and is being offered at an introductory price of $49 until 24 April 2024, after which it will cost $85.

But I like polishing the 'tater. Your system is fine as long as you do what you're doing, which is vet your plug-ins thoroughly. My philosophy is that if a plug-in is eating up too many resources on my computer, it ain't the computer that needs to be replaced. At the upper right corner of the forum page, click on your name and select Account settings. Then on the left, you should see a link for Signature. I suspect you're right. Either MODO Drums or MODO Bass (can't remember which) was the first plug-in that ever refused to install on my old laptop (1st gen i7) because the processor was too old. Yours has the AVX instructions that they were asking for. The constant crunch might have been a matter of graphics (if you're using the onboard HD 2000 GPU or same age external card). Software that makes heavy use of DirectX can have problems with certain older GPU's. Lotsa good pianos and drums in the Freeware Instruments topic. As you say, Hammersmith is a good free piano, so is the Monastery Grand that comes with the free MeldaProduction MSoundFactory Player. Here's a tip for keeping older systems viable: download HWInfo64 and use it to monitor your CPU speed and temperature. Sometimes cooling issues can slow an older system down because heatsink paste is getting old and/or the case is filling up with dust. Both have easy fixes. HWInfo can tell you if your system is throttling due to getting too hot.

  19. Hey Craig, Thanks for asking and hope your are keeping well. I got a little prompt about this post and thought I would drop on by. Following the little disruption by Gibson and Cakewalk I moved back to Steinberg Cubase, the software that I started from all those years ago on the Atari ST. I also recently added Bitwig to my arsenal as I am starting to get into live performance. Aside from that I changed my working name of Biodiode back to my given name as I found lots of people having problems pronouncing Biodiode let alone spelling it. The breaking point was when Pluginguru kept calling me Bio dude on his live stream, kind of made me realise the difficulty with the name. My new website is up at https://adrianearnshaw.com and I am very active on YouTube these days - https://www.youtube.com/@AdrianEarnshawMusic mainly doing tutorials and software reviews. 26. Thanks so much bud! There were a lot of pearls of wisdom in ur message. Firstly, I downloaded the HWInfo64(Although still trying to understand it all) And I love the idea of upgrading to the i7. I had no idea I could do that. I'm fairly technically savvy but I've never worked on a computer in my life. I'll def research that more. Also, thanks for confirming that my system should be fine as long as I vet vsts. I've kinda leaned that by trial & error. I'm still surprised by what this little computer is capable of. Btw, I'm actually a very good guitarist but I've always used pretty humble gear. Back in the 80's, I got a kick out of blowing other guys off the stage using a partscaster and a cheap amp and watching them walk away defeated with their highend gear. (wow, I just reaIized I'm a little sadistic 🤣) But u know it's the Hustle & Flow thing... The size of the fight in the dog. Or like the Beatles only having 4 tracks. There's a beauty in that. Anyway, Thanks again!

  28. While doing some test I came across a strange behavior. I had noticed that a plugin seemed to have high CPU usage. But loading it in an empty Cakewalk project, I noticed that task manager and Cakewalk reported very different CPU usage. Normally, if I simply load the basic project, task manager and Cakewalk's engine load report very similar CPU usage of around 1.5% on my PC. Then if I add an instance of SSL Native Flex Verb on the track, the engine load goes up to around 12% but task manager shows 21% CPU usage, almost double. Of course this fluctuates, but task manager always shows much higher CPU usage than Engine Load. One other very peculiar observation I made is that if I remove the plugin on that track the CPU goes down a bit but stays high in task manager, as if the plugin is stuck in memory. It goes down to only about 15% with the plugin removed, while the Engine Load in Cakewalk goes down to almost 0%. I imagine that the problem reside with the plugin, not with Cakewalk, since I can reproduce the same behavior with other VST hosts (ex. Cantabile). But I am very curious what this might be caused by and there are very knowledgeable people and devs on this forum that might be able to explain this. Not all the SSL plugin exhibit this behavior, but of the 12 I own, 10 create this behavior. It seems SSL plugins are quite CPU hungry unfortunately. If I compare Izotope Neoverb, which has an Engine Load of 3-4% to Flex Verb's 8-9%, it is quite a dramatic difference. And when I remove Neo Verb, the Engine Load comes down to the base level of 1.5%.

  43. If "Quick start" is working (you can control track volume), your device is delivering what it should. For the Instrument. Start by looking if you can write an automation for the parameter in question (without controller, just try to add automation line for that parameter or write automation using GUI). If that is possible, you can assign it to hardware slider. If not, (2) and (3) will NOT work (VSTi normally support automations for parameters which make sense to automate, but there are cases when they "forget" to do that). I assume possible. For (2), replace "Strip" Action in the "Quick start" with "ACT" Action, select "Slider 1" in parameters. Try "ACT Learn"... if not working, follow "AZ ACT Fix" instructions I have linked.

Cakewalk Sonar builds and improves on Cakewalk by BandLab, offering advanced technology, effortless workflow, and an interface that amplifies inspiration. You can still access Cakewalk by BandLab here, but it will soon be phased out. We will continue providing community support and maintenance for Cakewalk by BandLab until both Cakewalk Next and Sonar become publicly available. Existing Cakewalk by BandLab users will be able to continue using the software after the release of Cakewalk Sonar. In the meantime, Cakewalk by BandLab continues to be available here." "Will Cakewalk by BandLab be discontinued? Yes, eventually. We will continue providing community support and maintenance for Cakewalk by BandLab until Cakewalk Sonar becomes publicly available. At some point after the release of Sonar, Cakewalk by BandLab will no longer be supported. Note that existing Cakewalk by BandLab users will be able to continue using the software after the release of Cakewalk Sonar. In the meantime, Cakewalk by BandLab continues to be available here." TDLR: Existing users of CbB will continue to be able to re-activate and use CbB even after the release of Sonar. It will eventually be phased out, but we've no immediate plans to do so. There may be a point in between however, where new users will be unable to download and/or activate CbB.
