  1. @tdehan Thanks for sharing and apologies for the inconvenience. As others have mentioned, we'll be introducing Sonar licensing soon, and while CbB will remain available for some time, the app will present this screen at launch if you're offline as we're hoping to spread awareness of the new Sonar. That said, the app certainly shouldn't hang. You'll notice a timer in the window, which counts down from 20 seconds. During the countdown, the window cannot be closed, but again it should not hang. DM if that's indeed the case and we'll try to find the root cause. FWIW we plan to drop a maintenance update to CbB fairly soon, we may be able to refine the experience so it's less problematic for gig use. Thanks for your understanding!

  6. I bought Band-in-a-Box back in the Atari and PC Dos 5/Windows 3.1 days. I bought it to practice sax improvisation with. BiaB could be my back-up band while I tried things out from a book many of us have, “Patterns For Jazz”. @John Vere, I think it's a fine choice for your grandson. If your grandson has trouble with it, I'll be happy to help him out. The app has come a long way since then, and added quite a few features. Its original function was as an auto-accompaniment app, and that's where it shines. IMO, the output isn't pro quality, but it's better than a lot of bands that are out there gigging. I started writing aftermarket Style Disks and Fake Disks for it in the early 1990s. They added the feature, and as a multi-instrumentalist and music arranger, I tried my hand at it. With encouragement from my frieds who also had BiaB, I took out an ad in Keyboard Magazine, and before I knew it I had a mail-order business. It turned into my own little e-tail business https://www.nortonmusic.com and I have customers in over 100 different countries now. Personally, I like the MIDI styles better than the Real Styles. Why? As I said, IMO, the output isn't pro quality. Since MIDI is thousands of times more editable, I can export the end product from BiaB, import it into a DAW like Cakewalk, and turn the very good song into an excellent one. I can get move or get rid of inappropriate drum rolls, change the instrument voices, change chord inversions, fix the occasional inappropriate note BiaB creates, add song specific licks/figures, add expressive elements, etc. see https://www.nortonmusic.com/midi_vs_loops.html BiaB has a notation editor, but I like a dedicated notation editor better, like Encore, MuseScore, Sibelius, and others. They allow you to do things that the BiaB notation editor cannot. But as a music auto-accompaniment app, BiaB is the best in the biz. I've written “For Hire” styles for one arranger keyboard and two other auto-accompaniment apps, and the output of BiaB is far superior. IMO, every electronic musician needs (In order of importance): A DAW/MIDI sequencer like Cakewalk Band-in-a-Box A dedicated notation editor This is probably TMI, but once I get started on BiaB, I have trouble stopping. After all, it has become my “moonlighting” business. Notes ♫

  15. security is more than simply setting controls - you need process as well. authentication of the user and time/posting limits initially. so if you need to reply to an email or text message with the verification code before signing in, and then some profile updates. these two steps are not a hardship for real people but for spammers and bots it has a cost to get around - time, effort, and/or money to program, hire spam teams etc. and limit to 2 topic posts in the first 24 hours w/ reply restricted to those topics. infrastructure (hardware and software) can be used to reduce session re-use in spamming and other attacks. for example, you're login is a singleton which applies to all other activity on the site, multiple logins even from different devices do not count as anything other than 1. 🙂 an example is gmail - i can login in from multiple devices but the session is effectively 1 session for all devices. this way real people can ask for help and respond without limiting them too much. no one should really need to have more than 2 topics initially. then after the post, a minimum 1 reply to a given topic (presumably after someone else has responded, it's not a copy or high % copy of the first post, and there is no "bump" post until after say 4 hours), then can now be given access to post 2 more topics etc and after then after the posting of those 4 topics and minimum 1 reply (like "thanks") to a response on their thread, you can free them from initial "jail" and become proper members. heuristics matter. then removing spam topics is lower cost to the business. no true way to stop all attacks but you can make it more costly to the attackers. secondly if those spammers are using real businesses and/or products in the spam, feel free to have your legal folks (or a friend who has mastered properly scary language) to drop them a note about the reporting to government agencies and pending legal jeopardy. just in case the business actually didn't hire the spammers. those who care may take an interest in helping to stop it.

But then, they bought the dead company and redesign everything, old activation won’t work and they offered me a super upgrade offer, to buy again the plugin for another 5€. That’s a no go for me. After this, I’m really thinking if I should ever buy anything on PluginBoutique. Too bad cause I really liked having all my owned stuff grouped together.

  22. From what I understand of the article, the scammers might copy your song (literally rip it from the video) and then upload it to Spotify or whatnot, fake stream it, and collect pay that way, while at the same time shutting you out of any potential revenue from your performance. It's true that this won't matter much if your song doesn't make any money, but if they get one big earner from a million stolen songs, they can make a lot of money without ever making any music themselves....kind of like what Spotify does anyway. 😂
    2 points
  23. What I find particularly worrying about this is that the song has only been shared using private links on this forum. If the scammers have indeed copied the song, it would have been done via that link. The fact the name on the dispute is FUGA also sets alarm bells ringing as that is the name of the royalty collection company that BabdLabs have apparently teamed up with (as someone previously posted on this forum). I'm going to have to delve deeper into this, and I'll keep you all up to date on the counter dispute with YouTube.

  25. you might own it, but you need to prove it. hence the copyright filing which makes it official. depending on timestamps, self-address sealed postage-marked envelopes, etc have varying degrees of success in proving ownership. the article implies that basically someone streams your material off whatever service you use, relabels it and then puts it up on a paid-per-listen(s) service and subsequently then uses bots to play them over and over in order to get royalties. i'm guessing the 40 second noise thing is something the main services can filter most of them out. and as they decide the get smarter about the IP address or device/account used (like you cannot be in the US and EU at the same time, regardless of TCP/IP routing...) they'll block the bots more and more. until the bot programmers come up with something like, likely hacking people phones/tv sticks/laptops etc to play (silently) using your own personal devices

  27. the separation files are generated and then removed on render. however a couple of factors can play into it. "rarely" in my lingo means "sometimes" and this could result in those files 🙂 and as mettelus mentions - "caching" beyond memory allocation. lastly, i've seen issues with cloud storage where if the cache is in a cloud service folder (like Documents) then it's possible OneDrive (e.g.) backs them up and restores them (you know, trying to keep your files safe and all) 🙂

  30. that way, beyond the simple captcha, you need some intermediate steps like email verification + profile update - two things not done in the sign up. then post limiting. again the idea is increase the expense of the attack while making cleanup easier. obvious stuff like filtering for garbage thread names (like we see here with lots of extraneous characters typical users would not use). and infrastructure - single session per account regardless of device. this last one prevents many different devices, paths, etc using the same account to spam in an effort to bypass the authentication and manual steps and limited posting.

  31. Some kids in the neighborhood put together a metal/grunge band and asked me to write them some tunes. I wrote two for them and this is the 1st one. I called some of my old friends to help me jam it out so I could hear what it sounded like, we recorded it on a 1/4 reel to reel. very fast set up, a few practice runs, a few 🍺🍺🍺's and then we recorded it. needless to say it's a bit sloppy, but it was great to get my mojo working🤘 I'll post the 2nd one after we record it next week.

  33. There's nothing to see Jesse. It looks the same as the pic the OP posted. The timer finishes, and the close button comes up, but if I have touched the window sliders at any point either before or after that then the close button doesn't work for a period of time and pressing it or the sliders just gives me the windows "ding" sound like you get when you try to do something that it won't allow until you have closed or acknowledged some other window, except there is no other window. My PC is effectively frozen and won't do anything at all until such time as it decides to let go of whatever is blocking it. Minutes rather than seconds.

  36. i mainly use it to find alternatives to a given song - for instance ALL country songs and ALL reggae songs are 100% interchangeable. if you take a country song and swap the style to reggae or vice versa, 100% fit. every. single. time. 🙂 so a few older numbers i created originally as country songs became reggae because of this phenomena... nowadays i use it to generate some solos like sax where my sax playing skills are, erm, limited. very limited. but you need to spend time going through the different "players" and you need to select a style for the song (as well as tempo and arrangement etc) to finally get to a decent solo that doesn't sound "canned" (or too canned - not the bird). i have had the middle tier of the options for 20+ years now and there are some electronic style (mostly MIDI) which could be useful (if i did those). and it would be nice to get the MIDI from the real tracks because some of the sounds have too much "enhancement" (reverb, distortion, over compression etc) and would be nice to replace or augment easier than Melodyne or drum replacer etc. so -- for BAIB - start simply - enter chords, pick a style, set the tempo, repeats and let it rip. you can get quite far using those, and if you feel the need to tinker, beware... the tinkerer elves were the inventors of this product and it's a deep and wide rabbit hole which may consume more time than is worthwhile. but for learning to build up songs and arranging (like using the various . notation and the ^ lead-in notation) it's useful. for better options on learning to create songs with a lot more flexibility - consider looking into Hookpad. $5/month. http://hookpad.hooktheory.com best $5/month imho. the exported MIDI is generally good, and tons of options as well as a learning tool which is interoperable with the Hooktheory site (i use the free version of that) and a great library of tunes, progressions, and an excellent forum for getting help and discussions on music theory etc (which is imho a better investment in learning music than tinkering with BIAB).

  37. I cannot speak directly about the Lewitt, but I would explore this carefully: t I have “tried” numerous tube mics (meaning purchased and resold). If I found one in a friends mic locker that suited me I’d grab it or one just like it… I have no tube mics in the locker these days. Again, YMMV. I wish you well in your quest my friend, truly I do.

  44. I've had BiaB for over a year and have toyed with it but haven't put in the time to learn it well (daunting interface). I agree that is a great source for inspiration and getting ideas going, but maybe not so great for producing a finished product. But who knows? I haven't worked with it enough to make that type of judgement. A dedicated "BiaB and Cakewalk(Sonar)" forum topic might be a great place to consolidate / share ideas.

  45. If you can't play the parts or can't get a band together to play the parts for you, BIAB is a good place to give you some of the "other" musicians you need to make a song. But you are at the mercy of their libraries which, while good, will tend to drive you to some cliche styles. One common practice is to use BIAB to create the basics of a song and then go in and replace the parts with your own (or a friends) playing. It's great for trying various things and building up the framework (chords and changes) to a song. It can be very inspirational. However, letting it do 95% of the playing and then me just going in and singing the vocals and maybe playing a solo eventually gets boring. You tend to create the same stuff over and over. BIAB can quickly become Song-in-a-Can. But again, as a framework (especially with a large library of styles) it can really trigger ideas and help flush out creativity. But try to avoid the AI aspect (write me a song in this style and with the talents of the most famous musicians) and then claim you wrote and played a song. Spend time practicing and playing for yourself. There are A LOT of BIAB songs out there that the originator didn't play much on it. They programmed it but didn't play. And yes, EDM is much like that but there is some really good EDM and R&B despite that. I do use BIAB (occasionally) to work out chord complexities beyond major/minor/sevenths. Once done, I play the parts and rarely ever keep anything from BIAB. In the beginning I did though, but here comes the cliche stuff. It rarely gets pulled out now but it still worth having for getting that kick in the pants to write some songs. And since you can port the waves and midi to Cakewalk, it really helps with inspiration. It is limited in how complex you can make as song. You're not going to to Tarkus in BIAB. Well, maybe in 12 sections! IMHO

  47. That reminded me of a sign that a neighbour once put out front of his place that said " My lawn is not a toilet for your dog". The writing was really quite small and therefore hard to read from any kind of distance. As I was walking past one day someone walking by with a dog abruptly stopped to get up close and read it. Guess what his dog decided to do during this unexpected stop on his morning walk...? Mostly I'm quite proud of not being the type of person that instantly remembers that I have a camera in my pocket, but that was definitely a missed opportunity for some comedy gold.

  49. One thing to check/change with both of these programs is the number of Undo levels they are allowed. For both programs (actually ANY media program, even DAWs) the number of Undo levels can cause incredible RAM consumption for no good reason. Disabling/closing "Navigators" or shifting to a slimmer workspace will also prevent thumbnails being created and loaded into the apps. Specific to Paint Shop Pro 2023, File->Preferences->General Program Preferences... the "Undo" at the top is where to check, and I set undo levels to 10 for pretty much all apps. The rest of that pop up is good to check just to see how things are tweaked. Another (rather major) issue with PSP 2023 is if you upgraded from a previous version, there are issues with sluggish behavior (especially while painting) caused by carrying preferences forward from 2022. This thread solved that one for me, but was a royal pain till I realized what it was. In Painter, Edit->Preferences->Performance... is where to focus (in addition to the workspace). I give the app use of all but 2 threads (Core 0 is always Windows' workhorse anyway), 80% of RAM, and limit Undo to 10 again. The scratch drive is to an SSD, and the "Brush Accelerator" app is nice to see how the system performs from tweaks made on that page (and a GPU contributes a massive amount of performance to the app). I forget if I disabled auto-updates, but Painter had a patch recently and both programs have a Help->Check for Updates... feature. All that said, the real irony from BF was Rebelle 7 Pro getting pre-released for $30 to anyone. It is still $30 off ($119), but that being $30 was an outright steal. It has already had 7 updates in 6 weeks, and the only feature in lacks over Painter is the cloning features for things I typically do. Some of the new features in Rebelle 7 Pro make Painter pale by comparison (plus the graphics engine is much smoother, even with the "nanopixel" setting enabled).
