  4. Orange Tree Samples' founder, Greg Schlaepfer, just launched a new website, an online community for freely sharing presets for soft synths, plugins and sample libraries. It now has Greg's own presets and banks for Orange Tree Sample libraries and various soft synths and plugins. While the site currently has a modest collection of Greg's personal presets / banks, from experience, like his sample libraries, his presets are superb, and consequently, very much worth downloading. This is my cut and paste from the site's most popular presets list (it's not comprehensive, just what I found when creating this post): Soft Synths / Plugins XLN Audio XO Spectrasonics Omisphere 2 XLN Addictive Drums 2 Orange Tree Samples Evolution Libraries Orange Tree Samples Evolution Texas Twang Orange Tree Samples Evolution Hollowbody Blues Orange Tree Samples Evolution Infinity Orange Tree Samples Evolution Modern Nylon Orange Tree Samples Evolution Rock Standard Orange Tree Samples Evolution Songwriter Orange Tree Samples Evolution Stratosphere Orange Tree Samples Evolution Strawberry Orange Tree Samples Evolution Texas Twang While I'm friends with Greg, I actually only found out about Preset Galaxy from a post from Orange Tree Samples Facebook page and texted Greg to ask about it. I have his XLN Addictive Drums 2 presets and use them regularly, but I didn't have any of his Evolution presets beyond the factory presets, so I'm pretty excited to get these (I plan on downloading and installing them after this post), as I use Evolution libraries in nearly every project. Visiting this site, I immediately thought of how XLN used to have a community for freely sharing presets for AD2 (I'm pretty sure that Toontrack did too), as did NI for KONTAKT (for sharing libraries and presets), but both shut them down. Consequently, finding free presets for XLN plugins or KONTAKT libraries is just about impossible these days (I am only aware of some developers that SELL presets) and finding high quality free presets has always been a challenge, so this site is especially great to see . I've long been addicted to Pianobook for picking up free KONTAKT libraries and downloading free Vital presets at the developer's site and PresetShare.com and would love to see PresetGalaxy.com become a vibrant community of talented people freely sharing presets. It also helps me feed my unstoppable appetite for new sounds (and GAS) without spending cash. https://www.presetgalaxy.com/

  5. This. While I'd like to keep seeing more, the reality is there is a lot there as long as they don't kill off the platform. It remains an impressive free collection that could be a gateway to the brand.

  6. The Wurly (original trademark spelling) AKA the Wurli AKA the Wurlitzer electric piano is coming back to life in 2024 according to Music Radar. I am surprised that Music Radar's writer couldn't find out if Gibson still owns Wurlitzer or not, especially if they found this news out at NAMM. In any event, it's pretty exciting news to find your favorite electric piano is soon going back into production. EDIT: If you read my later posts, you'll find that I'm longer confident that the party behind this Wurlitzer website is legitimate. https://www.musicradar.com/news/new-wurlitzer-electric-piano?utm_content=keyboard&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=socialflow&fbclid=IwAR06lTzR7GJExVBLHWY9KTLYd76JSeiZPxI-cAKVUapIP6pS4PnrMc4GYlY

  7. With so much of the music today being squashed dynamically, it is refreshing(and real) to get some dynamics and slightly imperfect takes or sound. In terms of this thread, I think some people will focus on making a recording "clean" and high fidelity vs a good song done well enough, but unique. That, to me, is a downside to digital.

  13. The more I research this, the more I question if this is a scam. A few months ago I DMed the developer of AcousticSamples and asked him why he removed his Wurlie library from his site. He told me that he was contacted by a man out of Germany who claimed to be the heir of the Wurlitzer company. I knew the story was pure BS because my late mother worked for Wurlitzer and I knew they were an American company that Baldwin purchased maybe a few decades ago and then Baldwin was later purchased by Gibson. Anyhow, the guy claimed he owned the trademark and basically was trying to scam the developer for money. I told the dev this was almost certainly a scam and conducted a USPTO trademark search. It turned out the guy registered a trademark for Wurlitzer for use in sports entertainment. The last owner of the Wurlitzer trademark was Gibson. I doubt this guy even used a lawyer to file that trademark. So I went back to the developer and told him to ignore the scammer. Today, Music Radar published a story that the Wurli is back but stated it didn't know if its part of Gibson or they sold it. I am really surprised their editor let that get published without even checking the source. This would normally come In a press release and they always feature contact info. A journalist could also easily call Gibson. It appears that none of that happened. So, suspecting that this could be the same scammer creating this site to extort sample developers, I checked who was behind the website. It turns out that the Wurlitzer Company lists a residential address, a single family home in Germany, no business address. Yes, it could be a wealthy businessman, but wealthy businessmen have business addresses. Therefore, my current take on this story is that I question its authenticity. I asked my friend Dave Kerzner -- owner of Sonic Reality, musician and fellow Wurli enthusiast who is well connected in the music industry-- what he thinks and he finds I've raised some serious questions. I'll update this as I learn more.

  15. This was an experiment. I bought Band in a Box because my 14 year old Grandson has taken up playing guitar and has written 30 songs already. His songs are actually good as country music goes. He writes about Pick up trucks and his favorite hat, etc. He has a good sense of song structure but is not really there yet with his playing. I proceeded to learn how to use Band in a Box. The idea was he could learn to pick a style and play around with different chords and arrangements on his own. Then export it as midi and we would finish it in Cakewalk. I then found out how limiting Band in a Box is. The midi it exports apparently is for the notation display. It's bare bones. Example a steel guitar will have mod wheel pitch bends that sound cool in Band in a Box but they do not export. Apparently band in a Box doesn't really use Midi or Midi instruments it uses Real Tracks. I imagine they are sample loops that kinda drift around the chord changes. Anyhow for a laugh I entered the chords for this old song of mine and as exported the midi to create a TTS-1 project in Cakewalk. I then exported the Steel guitar as an audio track because as I said the midi sucked. I had to fix a bunch of spots that sounded terrible using Melodyne. Then I've totally replaced all but the midi drum part. The rest sounded like,,, well, Band in a Box.

  20. I have all of the Labs libraries on one of my drives, but I probably should just delete them, as I really don't use them. I think they're great for their intended purpose, attracting newbies to the Spitfire brand. But I think, if you have a collection of detailed KONTAKT libraries, it's unlikely that the Labs libraries are going to meet your standards, and it was never Spitfire's intention to do so. As far as paid libraries from Pianobook, they've been doing that for at least a year. I have no idea how well they're selling.

  21. My pet peeve is the overkill of Melodyne on instruments and vocals. You can go through older recordings when stuff is not perfectly in tune but yet we'd rather trust some colors than our ears.

  23. The thing about a DAW is you can choose to totally ignore the features and use it like an 8 track. You can choose, like me, to only have 1 reverb unit and 2 compressors like I did in the 80’s. So for me the audio recording part never really changed other than Melodyne. I think the biggest improvement over the old days is what we now get out of midi. This has made the one man band sound 100% better than it did back then. I just posted a song in the song forum that is about 8 tracks. And I didn’t use Melodyne. It totally could have been done on a 8 track and midi sync to an Atari. Vocals and guitar tracks all one complete takes. It’s not my best work for sure but it was done this way on purpose.

  24. Suzuki has confirmed that the new Omnichord, which it announced last year, will be called the OM-108, and will be released in July 2024. A set of chord selection buttons is set to the left, and a strummable touchstrip enables you to play them (as well as individual notes from the chords). There’s a definite ‘can’t go wrong’ vibe here, and you can choose the flavour of your chords with the major, minor and seventh buttons, also dialling in sus4 and add9 variations where appropriate. The OM-108 uses analogue circuitry to emulate the sounds of the classic OM-84 models (you can actually start it up in a dedicated OM-84 mode and use its presets) but there are new tones, too. You can beef up your sound using the layering options, and the rhythm section has been updated with new drum beats. If you’re purely interested in playing melodies or basslines, you can turn the chord buttons into a playable keyboard (a handy overlay gives you a visual guide to which note is which), and you can play the OM-108 as a drum pad, too. MIDI Out means that you can also use this Omnichord as a creative controller for your other gear.

  29. I think you're right and it's a common way business people look at things that don't directly produce revenue. What these folks miss is that these communities keep your brand front and center in front of customers and if you eliminate these resources, you're likely going to have to spend money to drive visitors to your site. In any event, I'm glad Greg is doing this. He never told me about this until I saw the announcement, but Greg's a wonderful person and a fellow idealist. I'm not sure what his objectives are for this community, but I trust that he's the ideal kind of person to run a community like this. I suspect this may be largely a passion project. He uses plugins too. I'd love it if someone added some great SD3 presets as I use that more than anything. I've created a lot of my own presets but I don't feel like I know what I'm doing well enough to share them. I mainly tune drums, layer and swap drums and cymbals and incompetently adjust effects.

  31. At some point any company that generates free content has to justify the cost of generating / maintaining that content to its stakeholders. Also I would imagine that over time it gets harder to generate new quality content that doesn't compete with paid product - what's next another piano? hobos singing a cappella in the rain? another acoustic instrument / synth amalgam, bug squashing percussion (varied by shoe or boot types), or ? For Christian's new company free libraries bring much needed attention maybe not so much for Spitfire... I hope that Spitfire at some point revives product generation of Labs stuff. But I must admit that while I always checkout and collect their offerings I don't use it (at least not yet) - but it does keep Spitfire on my radar and maybe that kind of interest is enough for them to keep it going.

  33. With all due respect, that's not the actual issue Bob! If you put 100 red ants into a jar then add 100 black ants and shake the jar, the red ants will think the black ants are enemies and vice versa, when the real enemy is the one who shook the jar. There's about a 1% group of inferior beings (that's hard to call human) that are purposely causing division, war and poor health because they believe they rule the world and we're just "useless eaters" (their words). They want only 500 million of us and, if we don't start acknowledging what we all have in common and not what makes us different soon, they will get their wish! Earth can easily hold a lot more people than we have now peacefully with all their needs met. There's a lot more to this, but it just gets weirder and I've probably doomed the thread now already! 🙄

  34. Hi Jack - thank you. I think you probably mean the effects on the 'POWER UP' vocal. I sent the vocal buss to three fx busses: cakewalk sonitus delay, pultec room verb, hitsville verb I automated them to kick in just for those parts. I'm going to try a screenshot here to show the settings. If you meant some other part, let me know.

  35. That looks identical to the piano I grew up with. I even took it out to a gig once, but quickly gave up on the idea when I realized that moving a piano throws it out of tune. But I loved that piano because it had amazingly fast action. If you can score it for a couple hundred bucks, absolutely go for it. But if they want a thousand dollars, though, get him a digital piano with the most important feature for a learner: a headphone jack.

  39. Ya horns are tricky. I was the sound guy for a 10 piece R&B band with a 3 piece horn section for 10 years. Sax, Bone, Trumpet. That sound is stuck in my head. It’s that Chicago horn sound. They called themselves the Hounds of Sound I created a horn section in Xpand because it plays 4 parts. Took a long time to get it satisfactory. Just a touch of reverb is all I use on horns. The sax guy liked delay on his solos.

  42. I am in the same boat with this. With FX pre-baked into the samples (all 36GB of them) and a rudimentary GUI, the limitations outweigh the usefulness for me. I forget now which newer instrument I had caught a review of, but the GUI being used replicated LABS enough that I passed on watching the rest of it. LABS was definitely good exposure to Spitfire as a whole though, so I did pick up a few other things along the way.
