  1. Cakewalk by BandLab is not going anywhere anytime soon. If anything changes on that front, there would be plenty of advance notice. We have no desire to pull the rug out from anybody. All of your projects from Cakewalk by BandLab and before will all continue to be fine in the new Sonar version as well. Also as has been said in a dozen other threads, the current plan for the new Sonar pricing should be very agreeable to most folks. Nothing is fully finalized, so we can't give out details, but the team is still very hard at work on all aspects of the new version and its delivery. This is unlikely as part of the user agreement for having free CbB is that it requires you to be connected to BandLab. All that's required of this is to have access to free software is the login. That's called cracked/pirated software, aka intellectual property theft. There's some plans in the works for some of this, obviously I can't give any details at this time.

  2. 1.47 released 01/3/24 Enhancements: Patch loading times have been significanlty reduced - patches and combis are loaded in 1/4 or less of the time vs previously. Bug fixes: UI glitch experienced in Bitwig when the state of the plugin is auto-backed up which can also result in a short audio glitch too - fixed.

  3. During the holidays, Epic Games gives away one free game every day, amounting to a total of 17 games. Each game is available for free for a limited period of 24 hours. Or that's what people on the Internet said. This last one is available for a whole week, so I'd say we're back to business as usual. Anyhow, the last/latest free game is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. "You are Star-Lord. The fate of the galaxy and the Guardians is in your hands. Time to show the universe what you’re made of. You got this. Probably." https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy Gameplay video:

  4. World Suite is very hit or miss. Very few instruments (like, around a handful, if even) are deeply sampled and suitable as lead instruments. Some are borderline unusable. It’s very much a „let me put that in the background to fill out some empty space“ kind of library. If you're looking for that, go for it. If you’re looking to add blazing sitar and oud solos or head-on percussion to your music, look elsewhere.

  5. Normally the strategy is buy some low priced junk you will never use so you can get the decent free with purchase item. In this case the strategy is to buy something decent for cheap so they throw in something you have no interest in. That being said, I think we can all appreciate a month free of temptation like this one is this far.

  8. @Alan Bachman You can definitely open .wrk files in Cakewalk by BandLab. Obviously ancient plugins might not be there, but the file format is compatible with CbB. As far as some of the plugs go, you might have more luck recovering those if you have a 32-bit SONAR install, but all the actual data will load in 64-bit fine.

  14. It's possible there might be something weird with the file too if it's not opening in CbB. It should open though- you could try Safe Mode (holding shift when clicking open on the file from within Cakewalk) and click NO TO ALL when prompted about loading plugins.

  15. What I remember most about the song forum was NagBap. Bapu was always chasing people to send along their stems so he could get his work done. IS he still at it? I'm curious to see what the next Sonar roll out will look like. I bought every proprietary plugin they sold back in the old days and I've not been able to find really great replacements for some of them. I have all the old pre Bandlab software archived, including the plugins. I'll be curious to see if the rewrite kills backward compatibility with them. I do miss some of the Cakewalk synths because they were easy to use and had great sound. In a previous post I described the product as doomed and that was a poor choice of words. I think cursed would have been better. It just seemed like whenever things were really coming together, money and management would derail it. Roland, Gibson, Bandlab. I can't think of any other platform that's changed hands as often. On the positive side, these issues pushed me in another direction. I moved away from recording and got into hardware, building guitar amps, working with studios and eventually building tube hi-fi equipment. So it wasn't all bad. I bought a bunch of DAWs. I found most didn't work for me as well as Sonar Platinum but did get comfortable with Reaper. finding it to be very capable and low cost. Here's a couple examples of my new gig.

  16. Lemme know what you think of the plug-in. I was turned on to it by a person on this forum who posted his song. I don't remember his name but his vocals reminded me somehow of Eddy Grant. I liked the song and asked him how he had gotten it to "sparkle." There was an attractive (but not obnoxious) sheen to the mix. He knew right away what I was talking about and said it was due to his application of the SPL Vitalizer plug-in. One of the few brainworx stalwarts I had yet to pick up during a MEGA $25 no minimum sale. How I miss those, they were like getting a Xmas stocking 3 days in a row. Plug-ins instead of Viewmaster reels, though.

  19. I'm old enough to remember when strings were typically sold individually. A guitar player I knew bought Black Diamond brand strings, bought a banjo string for the first string, a first string for the second, second for the third, wound third for the fourth, fourth for the fifth, and fifth for the sixth. It was a home-made light gauge string set, before they started selling light gauge sets. He said he learned that trick while in Nashville. I used to buy individual reeds. I'd go to the music store, hold the reed up to the light to see if the grain was even, and reject the bad ones. You can't do that anymore, either. So I guess the individual string and reed era ended decades ago. Insights and incites by Notes ♫

  28. Thanks for confirming that. I thought it's just me. 😄 On the other hand it means that the generation gap just got bigger. While Xers and Boomers tend to cling on to more traditional, analog-ish stuff, Millennials and Gen Zers are brave enough to explore new ways to process audio. Things that don't work for me, for you or other similar minded folks might work miracles for others.

  33. Indeed, and I wouldn't suggest that anyone use a program in that condition. It would be putting your system in the hands of an anonymous person who has put a great deal of effort into violating a licensing agreement and enabling others to also do it. Seems....fraught with potential for danger. I've personally cleaned up the results of a friend's son having rendered his laptop unusable due to his use of cracked music software. Since it was the same computer that he was supposed to use for school assignments and entertainment, he was hurtin' for certain. It took me hours to get a clean Malwarebytes test from the thing.

  36. If "they" don't, perhaps someone else will. Personally, I see little advantage for them to break Cakewalk by BandLab. The only possible upside is to coerce people into switching to the payware version. But people don't like to be coerced, and the ill will this would generate would likely cause a serious backlash. Ask Waves about the dangers of perceived coercion and resulting backlash. Better to have Cakewalk be the 6 year loss-leader that it was, and simply attract people to the new Sonar with look, feel, and feature improvements. I'm confident that for regular users of CbB that the new Sonar UI will be reason enough to invest in a license. I also doubt that they will be gouging for license fees, The existing userbase consists of a lot of frugal (and/or just plain broke) people, myself included, who were initially attracted to the program because it was free. I seem to remember talk of a tiered licensing of some sort. Perhaps there will be a stripper version of Sonar that only comes with the plug-ins that currently ship with CbB, and a premium package that will include some of the Cakewalk-branded plug-ins that once shipped with SONAR Platinum, such as the LP EQ's, full CA-2A, Session Drummer, Rapture, Dimension, etc. The promo picture shows the LP EQ's in use, so there's a possible clue. Re-skinned VST versions of the sonitus fx suite would be yummy as well. There's still Cakewalk IP that BandLab paid for that is (so far) going unused.

(tunnel brain, tunnel ears) I remixed different versions of more bass and less bass, still might tweak it a bit . . . just wanted to get it posted before the year was over.

  43. I sent all of our employees home during Covid and when I opened the office back up as an option I never went back in. We never hired remote before Covid but we got good at it and by the time I sold in June over a 3rd of our 62 employees were out of state. It let us add a lot of talent we could find locally. while I liked working from home and people can be productive there definitely something lost in collaboration and communication. As with anything it’s all trade offs. we operated using the EOS model called Traction. It allowed manage remote withouut micromanaging or being taken advantage of. Now that I’m retired I absolutley don’t miss spending most of the day in zoom meetings!
