  6. Mike's videos, especially the tutorials are excellent. I even watch the ones that are irrelevant to me as he has such an engaging manner. A really nice, thoughtful guy too and very supportive of other musicians. His Facebook Cakewalk group is popular as well ( declaration of interest - I'm a moderator of that group)

  13. I've purchased several of Craig's articles in pdf form from Sound-On-Sound (SOS). Because SOS ran Craig's monthly column I had a digital subscription to the magazine. When SOS dropped Craig I stopped my subscription. I also emailed SOS's editorial department to explain why the magazine lost me as a paying subscriber. I received a very nice personal email from the editor in return acknowledging my dissatisfaction.

  15. Of course, typical Magix confusing and vague magic fashion! This may or may not help but here is an enlightening post from last year at MovieStudioZen. Movie Studio Platinum (made in Germany) is not part of the Vegas line (made in the US). Also: Movie Edit Pro version Comparisons (part of the Magix line); There is actually a Vegas Edit also (see Vegas version Comparisons); Movie Studio 2022 version Comparisons (part of the Vegas line).

  16. I Unified Thorn months ago, but sat on it due to it being unclear whether the extra banks (one by DS and two by Rob Lee) that are included when purchased from PA could be considered as "factory" patches. Then someone on the PG forum posted this week that they were manually Unifying it. So I let the person know that I had already Unified it and sent it to John to see if he wanted to release it. I circumvented the potential issue by splitting it into two parts; the main factory presets and the 3 extra banks. So John has shared the main factory patches but is asking PA whether they are OK with the Unified extra banks also being shared. It would be unusual for non-factory patches to be allowed. There are two main threads on the PG Forums where people talk about Unifying stuff. One is the one you mention and the other is https://forums.pluginguru.com/unify-share/ . However, you will notice that there are a few stickies at the top of the first thread which make it easy to miss new posts that occur below them. It's also worth checking through all 8 pages of those threads for any that may already have been Unified or doing a search if you are planning to Unify a new one. One example you will find there is the V Collection synths which someone started doing a while back but never completed them. I have worked my way through the ones he did (there were some issues with them which I have fixed) and I was planning to do the rest. If you own VC8 maybe we could collaborate to split the task or you could carry on from where he/I left off? The ones that are done are ARP 2600, B-3, Buchla Easel, Clavinet, CMI and CS-80. I also started doing Analog Lab V, but abandoned it at around 3,500 patches when I noticed that it was over 1Gb and the estimated final thing would be over 2Gb! I kept what I had done though in case anyone really wants it finished. No-No's for Unifying for now are Omnisphere and Vital factory libraries. I have Unified the latter for my own use but the dev doesn't want Unified Vital patches to be shared so we have to respect his wishes.

  18. The IKM MODO Drum email I received this morning FINALLY made a clear statement that beyond the bug fixes and optimizations in v1.5, that 3 new drum kits were available for purchase. Maybe all of the negative feedback had some impact on their marketing peeps. Or maybe it's just a coincidence.

  19. Correct me if I'm wrong but TotalFX is not included in Vegas Edit or Vegas Pro (Suite) at the moment. It is only with Movie Studio Platinum and tomorrow is the last day. @Tezza, correct! I had asked the aforementioned Derek and was told "Yes! NBFX uses the OFX protocol, which means they will all work in DaVinci Resolve and any other program that supports OFX. In the past, different versions of Vegas would often come packaged with a "sample pack" of NBFX, that sometimes were locked to only work in the program they were sold with. Boris FX was the main company that does this. However, this time around there is no catch. I have tested it myself and NBFX Total FX works 100% OK in all of the following: DaVinci Resolve, Vegas Pro 19, Vegas Pro 18, Vegas Pro 17 and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 17."

  21. More like "anything at all to say about Cakewalk," amirite? As a subscriber for the past couple of years, I'm going to drop Andy Jones, Computer Music's editor, a note telling him that I appreciate the coverage of....well, the DAW I actually use. And they hit a bullseye with it, most of the work I do these days is electronica, and I find Cakewalk to be pretty ideal for it. If you wish to do the same, it's andy.jones@futurenet.com. The issue is Aptil 2022, #306.

  29. I understand what you're getting at, but I gotta say that an Arranger Track, Articulation Maps, and even nested folders are way more interesting to me than bundled plug-ins. I already had a favorite synth, reverb, and compressor before I started using Cakewalk 4 years ago. Aside from the workflow annoyance kind of things that I post about in Feedback Loop, an integrated sampler is about the only thing that I think Cakewalk really "needs" at this point to retake its rightful place among the heaviest hitters. Then the vaunted chord track, I guess. I'd also like to see it return to its roots a little bit and pay attention to the trend toward integration with hardware. That's something I don't do at all at this point, but it's in Cakewalk's DNA and I know that it's a growing trend. I don't know what features are important to those users except for MONO EXTERNAL INSERTS and making it as easy as possible to integrate external synths. One of the issues with getting those big front-cover reviews is that it's easy for a magazine to know when to do one for Cubase or Live! or Logic: go for the major release. But Cakewalk by BandLab adds features a few at a time rather than making users wait years to get a dumptruck full and then harvesting the upgrade licenses. By the feature-addition yardstick that other companies use, Cakewalk would be up to Cakewalk 2.5 or so by now. There's also the question of how important is press for an individual DAW these days? I have the most recent 27 issues of CM in my Zinio library. Of the 27, Logic's most recent release made the cover, as did Ableton Live!'s and Cubase's, Studio One's, and (I think) Bitwig's. Live! Lite 11 had its own cover 2 months ago. Live! is mentioned 3X in cover stories in other contexts. That's only 6 covers in 2 years of publishing, and they are heavily skewed toward what they obviously think is their target audience's favorite DAW. Notice who (along with Cakewalk) is not mentioned on those covers: Pro Tools, FL Studio, Digital Performer, REAPER, Samplitude, Reason, Waveform, Mixcraft, Mixbus, Garage Band, some of which have had major releases in those past 2 years. I think the idea that press coverage in magazines like CM and SOS results in a lot of uptake of whatever DAW is featured may not be as true as many seem to believe. I think it's the other way around: putting popular DAW's on the cover sells magazines. The former assumes that there is a readership of those mags that hasn't already settled on a DAW, or is ready to switch, and I don't believe that's true. I think people read those to get ideas about what to do with the DAW they have. If we're interested in the articles about the latest release of whatever, we might read it to check up on the DAW's other people prefer (oh look, Pro Tools now allows you to automate gain inside a clip, how revolutionary). I find the ones on Pro Tools amusing, as they add catch-up features that even "little guys" like Mixcraft have had for half a dozen years or more. I'm looking forward to Pro Tools "revolutionizing" the DAW market by adding a performance panel.😄

  30. Looked up a listing for a used JV-1080, 3rd hand, with original printed user manual. $400 at Reverb! There is also another unit fully expanded - 4 SR-JV80 modules, listed at $700. https://reverb.com/p/roland-jv-1080 Wonder what a 1080 in a sealed box would sell for? Down payment on a Korg Nautilus, maybe?

  32. Yes, the music was an experiment, but at the moment, I don't think I'll continue it for the "memoir" videos. If I'm just telling stories I should try to make it as relaxed as possible, and not look too prepared. The only thing I do in advance is to write down a series of topics. And then I do it three times. So far I've never done any editing from one take to another. These first two have been edited from one take. Going to try to do Francis Coppola today, and I'll tape another Madonna one later in the week.

  38. Seems to be independent to Magix movie studio. I got it as an upgrade to movie studio, but mainly to use the NewBlue effects within Vegas Pro. I just downloaded the NewBlue effects which is a separate download to Magix Movie Studio Platinum 2022 and didn't download Magix Movie Studio Platinum at all, (I'll do that later). It was a 1.5gig download, then installed it. You have to set up a NewBlue account as part of the installation process so you can activate it with the serial. It installed fine and is coming up as available for Vegas Pro as well as my old movie studio. I don't think it's tied to magix offerings only though. It will most likely be compatible with whatever it says it is compatible with on the NewBlue website, vegas pro, davinci and recent adobe premiere versions. It seems that you can only use it on one computer, to use it on another, you have to deactivate it and then reactivate it on the other computer. You do this by signing in. A bit annoying if you want to use it on another computer.

  41. IIRC, there should be a new Mini with the new M1 CPU released soon. I have no idea how much it will cost you for that sort of storage space. I work in IT with stats researchers and some of them got new Mini's that are on market. I tried one out -- it's okay. I tried some of the more heavy number crunching stats code on it.. it runs okay. a bit faster but nothing special. (it could also be the shitty written code LOL!!) I don't know. Maybe these machines really shine in photo and video editing work .. I don't know... to me its all just a newer gen CPU and RAM that will , in the not too distant future, be old garbage. For work, I am still rockin an old Core 2 w/ 16gb ram circa 2008. I can't be arsed to upgrade. I got a few more years until i retire early. i am hoping the thing keeps running until then. then i torch the mutta fusker.

  46. Different strings sound completely different to me, I don't know that a single strum or pick of one string would highlight the differences though. Ernie ball and D'addario and DR strings all sound completely different to me, chrome flatwounds on an electric are radically different as are coated strings. They also sound radically different with age, there is no comparison between old worn strings and brand new strings, I like them to be about a week old.

  48. Well, my significant other gave me birthday card that had a dog on the front - with lines to show it was pivoting its head between positions looking at you or looking at something off to its side - the words said " Happy - SQUIRREL - Birthday". She points out that I often get distracted by other things - and I have come to think of those "mindshifts" as yet another "Squirrel" moment - one to be careful of - so that we spend our time on what we need to and not a distraction. I have used the term "rabbit-hole" for this same type of mind drifting over the years. I am trying to make sure that I learn more of the software's capabilities - like a toolbox - we learn what we need to use .. and then when faced with something that is not being solved that way - we explore a bit and pick up something new - constant learning is part of life for musicians and software developers. Here's to learning something every day - that aligns with you.
