IMO, some of their stuff is ho-hum, easily replaced once one dives a little deeper into quality FX, but some of their stuff is pretty good, especially considering the price. The following are some that have withstood the test of time. In order of usefulness: Voxbox: the traditional vocal double-track, it has a very handy display to help you dial in the width and amount. My go-to for this class of effect Cyclone: stereo/mid-side compressor with saturation, this one gives you the mid and side all front-facing. If you're into mid-side compression processing, this is a useful, straightforward tool with an attractive UI. Even though I have elysia alpha mastering compressor, I still sometimes use Cyclone for its more straightforward UI. The saturation doesn't sound half bad, but I usually don't push it that hard. Glitch: it's a glitch tool. It makes glitches. It's five bucks. Hiku: a bus sweetener, does compression, saturation, etc. with minimal controls. I usually don't go in for this sort of thing, preferring to set up the individual elements, but Hiku really sounds good for punching up rhythmic elements. Gets you there fast, sounds good. FAT/FAT2: FAT is their free filter, a go-to for me when I just want a dead simple high or low pass that I can easily automate. FAT2 adds things like internal modulation and multiple filter types. This is not to say that their others are useless, Ravage and Overtone are pretty good at what they do, but the above 5 are the ones I kept when I did the big purge.

What I love about this is that it's a vintage recreation, but the patterns are very modern. I love the ambient stuff. I'm really enjoying playing around with this thing. This is one of the best BF freebies I've seen from any company in years.

Just so the people in this forum don't miss it, HUGE feature addition is "Replace FX." I'd imagine that anyone reading this is very much into auditioning different FX on a given track. This eliminates several flow-impeding clicks.

To do so, hold down the CTRL key while choosing the replacement effect. In order to also replace plugins found inside FX Chains, hold down CTRL+SHIFT. Improved MIDI clip controller rendering To improve legibility, MIDI controller events are now drawn darker and behind note events in MIDI clips. You can also show/hide controller events by clicking the Track view View menu and selecting Display > Show MIDI Controller Events. Navigate to Arranger sections via context menu You can right-click the Show/Hide Arranger Inspector button to access a list of all sections in the active Arranger track. This allows you to quickly navigate to sections without having to open the Arranger inspector. Optionally send Send All Notes Off message to VST plug-ins Using certain VST plugins can result in stuck notes after playback stops. You can now optionally send "All Notes Off" messages to all VST plugins when the transport stops, by enabling Send All-Notes-Off Messages on Stop in Edit > Preferences > File - VST Settings. This option is off by default to avoid incurring delays when stopping playback when using many virtual instruments. Added preference for enabling/disabling MMCSS for ASIO drivers This allows you to enable MMCSS (multimedia time critical threads) independently from the ASIO driver state. According to the ASIO specification, drivers are recommended to run in MMCSS mode by default. If you wish Cakewalk to manage the drivers MMCSS mode, check the "Enable MMCSS for ASIO Driver" option. Note: This option defaults to off, to avoid conflicts with drivers that already manage their internal MMCSS state. This is a change in behavior from past versions, so if your ASIO driver has an MMCSS option in its control panel, you need to explicitly enable it now to get MMCSS performance from the driver. To enable MMCSS for ASIO drivers, select Enable MMCSS for ASIO Driver in Edit > Preferences > Audio - Playback and Recording. Note: Some drivers default to MMCSS off in their control panel. If you wish to use MMCSS for these drivers, you will need to manually enable it in the driver control panel or enable this new option in Cakewalk. It's not like people haven't done the TR-808 a zillion times, but this easily seems to me the best one yet, and also a new instrument. So much better than the one on Roland Cloud, which is kind of sad. The UVI approach seems so perfect. To do the look and feel perfectly, but then go beyond and make it better. 1100 patterns and 140 presets. It's something new. So happy to get this. One thing that's unfortunate about UVI is how much they charge to upgrade from one version of Vintage Vault to the next, so I wouldn't have had this for a long time, if ever. It wouldn't have sold me. A TR-808. So what? But this is so good. Another library I love from UVI is Beatbox Anthology 2.

The multi-voice output is a a very clever feature - I had a quick play with it today. Really good for routing strings - you get a lot of control. I compared a simple chord set routing to a full orchestra string patch with the same chord set split between bass, cello, viola, and 1st and 2nd violins (both of the violins routed to MIDI Ch 5). It's incredibly easy to set up the routing - I mean even I managed to do it right first time! You really can hear the difference, you can set levels across the different patches; you can even pan the instruments to their actual positions in the orchestra pit. Incredible potential if you're into orchestration (although a purist would probably not use Scaler to achieve this). I'm very impressed - much fun to be had. Pound for pound, Scaler is an incredible plugin imho and just keeps getting better. Andy
