  1. This is dope! The guys from Samplicity are giving away their highly acclaimed impulse responses from the Bricasti M7 reverb unit for free. These files can be used in convolution plugins that can read IR files in Wave format, for instance Apple Space Designer, Steinberg REVerence, LiquidSonics Reverberate and Audioease Altiverb. The Bricasti Design Model 7 provides the highest level of musicality and ease of control imaginable in a processor dedicated to the task of reverberation. In short: simply one of the best sounding reverbs you can get. Grab the IRs here: https://samplicity.com/bricasti-m7-impulse-response-files/

  3. In addition to our previous post about the Bricasti IR lib, here’s another huge Impulse Response collection: Download GN’s Personal Lexicon 480L IRs. “The reason for doing this was so that I could have a virtual 480L inside the box in my Pro Tools rig via Audio Ease‘s excellent Altiverb plug-in . Grab the IRs here: https://www.housecallfm.com/download-gns-personal-lexicon-480l (if you need a plugin to load these into, just drop a line)

Btw, you can also always get the huge Bricasti Impulse Response collection (3.5k files) from LiquidSonics here (under "Can I use the Bricasti M7 captures for free without purchasing a Fusion-IR compatible convolver?"): https://www.liquidsonics.com/knowledge-base/ This has been posted a few times here on the forum, but jsut in case someone has missed them.

  7. A lightweight alternative to Task Manager is Moo0 SystemMonitor v1.83. The Portable version is the best option, since it installs nothing on your machine and you can simply run that when needed (and use it from a thumb drive as well). If you right click anywhere on the GUI you can choose to "Keep on Top" (option near the very top) while working. If your machine starts to get sluggish, pay attention to the [Bottleneck] and [Burdened By] at the top and what processes under [CPU Loader] and [HDD Loader] may be triggering them. Although it doesn't go into the detail of the Task Manager, the Bottleneck/Burdened By fields are handy for when they get triggered and it takes up far less screen space to use.

  8. Take a look at Spitfire Audio Originals Intimate Strings which is selling for $29. 579 reviews getting a 4.8 average out of 5 Just listen and compare the walkthroughs between the two. I think that the 8dio version has a lot more articulations, etc. but if you don't like the way the library sounds - does that matter? 8dio's new line, SoundPaint, seems to be getting some attention. I can't speak to how good or bad SoundPaint is as I have stayed away from 8dio since my earlier misadventures. Edit: if articulations, etc are critical for you... Consider picking up Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition which is currently on sale for $299, even if you have to make payments. It's a killer sale. I spent a lot more than that at 8dio picking up 'sale' items individually. It is huge, you may need to get extra storage or enlarge it; you also don't have to install everything all at once (or at all). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Note: The opinions expressed here are solely my own. I have not received any compensation (virtual, physical or even imaginary) for stating my opinions.

  9. It is no longer included with the last version of CbB or Sonar but if you have it you have it. As long as you don’t uninstall CbB I would think. Just don’t ever loose the CbB full installer from last fall that did include it. In the future if you build / purchase a new computer you might not be able to save projects from CbB but I would think you would be able to install it and therefore still install the TTS-1. There’s always the Roland SC VST. It’s only around $70. I have a video I made exploring the options.

  10. I'm very confident that you're not alone. It's pretty clear from posts that a great deal of us hoard plugins and sample libraries, especially when they're free.

  11. I have these. While they aren't my go to strings, for $50 USD, I think they're worth considering. I think I paid a little over $ 100 US for them a couple of years ago. There are A LOT of articulations for each instrument, but they don't have intuitive scripting that enables you to get real-time, realistic sounding performances like some KONTAKT instruments have (which is what I really love about Orange Tree Samples libraries that made me a huge fan from day one). It takes a bit more work. If you have a go to set of strings and are looking for additional colors, I think this MAY be worth picking up. The interface allows you to trigger the various articulations by velocity you set. Consequently, if that fits your workflow, you may enjoy this approach.

  13. I was a fan of the video game ("game" singular, since FO4 was the only one I liked) and am looking forward to seeing the adaptation. But not enough to give Amazon permission to dip into my checking account every month for all eternity. Some will say "just sign up for the free trial and then cancel". Nah, I am still scarred by my AOL experience 30 years ago. No corporate entity is getting my routing number ever again.

  15. I got myself addicted to coffee on purpose when I started college. I needed some kind of routine to help me get out of bed in the morning. Well, it worked. I would drink two or tree pots a day, plus a couple of bottles of cola. Eventually I reached a point where I didn't enjoy the taste at all. I managed to switch to tea a few years ago. It works great for me. With coffee, when I needed a little upper, I'd get that initial jolt but I would crash shortly after. But if I went to bed I couldn't sleep for more than 2-3 hours. Tea has less of a kick but the energy is more even. To me anyway. Not the most exciting beverage, but I developed a taste for it. It's also less tempting to load it with sugar and all kinds of stuff. Another advantage is that it's a lot easier on my stomach. And lastly, it's a lot cheaper. That being said, the smell of coffee is like nothing else. Really makes me miss it, but I'm not sure I would actually enjoy it. Part of me does wish, though.

  16. https://www.pluginboutique.com/deals/show?sale_id=16051 Tactic for $5 (my favorite Glitchmachines instrument) Polygon2 for $10 Quadrant for $10 Cryogen for $10 Fracture XT for $5 Convex for $5 (my favorite Glitchmachines effect) Subvert 2.0 for $10 It's hard to describe what these things do, but if you like glitchy sounds, the company is well-named. The line is split into FX that process incoming audio and instruments that use samples and then process them in strange ways. If you have a song and you want it to have a section that goes "bloip squark zert squee" or maybe you have an entire song you want to sound like that, then you will like these.

  18. As Andres said, a lot of this is how the VST is scripted and how it loads samples (if used). There is no cut and dry answer for this unfortunately, but VSTis that load samples into RAM so that they are instantly accessible will often be smoother than ones reading from a disc, but that would also bring up a RAM concern to make sure you can load them all. Internally a lot of VSTs can be CPU-hungry even if they do not have massive size to them, so using only what you need is often best (akin to Ozone Standard is a mastering plugin, do not use that on all tracks). For some instruments it can be better to bypass internal FX, then use a lightweight chain on the output. A good portion is also the system, so do not forget old school things like freezing or bouncing tracks. CWPs themselves are rather small (as long as Region FX are bounced), so you can save things with a new name when you are "close" to committing, yet still back out to the previous version if you do have tweaks to make.

  20. No tech expert here, but as a user, I've experienced that the performance of the VST depends more in the way it is designed to work, and less in the size of the sample content. i.e, VSL has HUGE e libraries, but the performance is superb. Their VST engine is proprietary, and is really efficient. Other engines working on smaller sample content are much less efficient and uses a lot of resources.

  23. You could have the best monitors in the world, but they're worthless if you put them in the wrong room or even in the wrong position in a room. An extreme example would be to put them in a tiled bathroom - nothing is gonna sound good there. Almost every room has issues with certain frequencies. If the frequencies your having problems with in your vocals also happen to be frequencies that your room either masks or boosts, then you're going to having issues mixing. No speaker is going to change that. The point is if you're not hearing the frequencies properly, regardless of your mixing skills you'll be making the wrong EQ decisions. For example, say your room has a dip at 350Hz or at 800Hz - you think everything sounds thin, so you boost the frequencies around there. However you then play it on another system, and everything sounds muddy or nasal. You've boosted a frequency because you can't hear it properly - not because it's not there, but because your room has EQ'd it out. The main issue in my room was my bass response was overly exaggerated. Moving the speakers away from the wall helped, but my mixes still had almost no bass when I played them elsewhere. I heard too much bass so I turned it down. But the problem wasn't that there was too much bass in my mix, the problem was that my room was boosting the bass, making me think it needed turned it down. ARC corrected the frequencies (as it happens, there were other frequencies that had issues too), and right away I heard my mixes with nearly no bass like I heard them elsewhere. I remixed (essentially turning the bass frequencies back up), and it sounded great wherever I played them. What room treatment software like ARC Studio do is measure your room's response from 20Hz to 20Khz with a swept tone. Measurements are taken in several places around your listening area. The software then attempts to boost or cut the frequencies to give a flatter response. It probably won't solve problems like standing waves or reflections, but it can go a long way. It's definitely worth getting a measurement mic and some measurement software and at least going through the process of measuring your room. You can get measurement mics for around $50 -$100, and there is free software out there. In the old days, commercial studios got people to measure their rooms in this way, then used a stereo 32 band graphic EQ to draw the inverse curve of what was measured - the software (and the ARC Studio hardware) are just doing the same thing.

  27. This is a first mix that, after having posted, noticed some manic piano towards the end. Please ignore that. I'm looking for feedback on the mix and overall sound, plus anything else you want to point out. Thank you! Update: The link now points to mix 2. I've actually punched up the arrangements some and I think it's a better mix but I'm thinking I'm too aggressive on the master bus because to me the dynamics have suffered some in places. Feedback is welcome. Update: Mix 3 is now posted. Thanks for your help!

  28. Gary, I actually like either version which just shows that there are many interpretations of a classic that are viable. I use ARC 3 software; I wonder if there's a big enough difference in the hardware version vs. the software version of ARC to be worth upgrading to. You have proven the worth of the system!

  40. Yeah, I know you can work around Song mode, but I don't feel the upgrade is worth it and I need as much patch space as possible in my tribute band, etc. As far as the Montage, I won't ever buy a keyboard for gigging that is super heavy, and for me, I prefer the 30 lbs or less, as my age, build and general health require this...and I gig too much to be shlepping too much, which is why I have a Nord in the first place and don't necessarily need two or more keyboards or a computer/tablet to do my shows. For studio, I would consider something heavier, but for what purpose, when in my studio most of what I do is software/controller driven, and I want to rehearse with the band and use the same equipment I use on a gig, anyway. There are so many great keyboards, but the heavy ones are just not for me, not even safe for me to try and deal with them anymore. I now also have a Yamaha CK88, which meets the weight criteria and has 88 weighted keys and sounds very good--not Nord good, but good enough for my jazz and variety band cover gigs, but not my Tribute work, where I use the Nords extra pedals, arpeggiator and other features extensively. As far as Song Mode, Yamaha Live mode isn't bad, but not as good at all, plus they don't have a software editor for me to organize my sounds and sets. So I'm gonna be ok with what I have now.

  47. Hi Peter, I agree with a number of points/issues you've raised. One of the problems I've had with 8dio is as you say "I find that the quality is all over the board". Being that various Spitfire libs (Originals Intimate Strings, Originals Epic Strings) were recently on sale for $17 and still sell at $29 - I don't know if this 8dio collection is really even a contender.
