4. https://channelrobot.com/product/gainer/ Gainer is completely free, just enter the voucher: GAINERFREE at the checkout Gain Staging is important in your mix process for sure. Your DAW will give you the ability to control the gain level for each track and for your master bus, but that’s where it ends and this isn't nearly enough control or flexibility. You need the ability to control the amount of gain going into and coming out of each of the plug-ins you are using, as every plug-in has an optimal amount of gain for it to work at it’s best. If your selected effect plugin doesn’t have it’s own input gain, then this is going to be difficult. Gainer to the rescue. Gainer is a clear and simple gain-staging plugin that allows you to see, at each stage of your effect chain, the gain levels coming out of each plug-in (the AUDIO IN of Gainer) and it allows you to change the levels going into the next plugin (the AUDIO OUT of Gainer). You can add up to +24dB or remove up to -100dB. Gainer throws in the ability to switch the signal phase and offers you an inverted gating compressor, for a more subtle and controllable noise reduction process when compared to a simple noise gate. All of this is completely free, just enter the coupon code above. Nicked from: https://bedroomproducersblog.com/2023/08/21/channel-robot-gainer/

  8. Friends don't let friends buy Waves đŸ€Ł The PA and native SSL ones are really good and both keep providing free updates and you can use on multiple machines. I don't think you're missing out on anything with the Waves ones at all. They're OK, nothing really wrong with the sound quality and not better, just slightly different like how even PA is to native SSL. But the others don't have the same downsides as Waves.

  12. It's the library structure that needs work. I can move Kontakt libraries all over the place. The presets and samples are often in the same folder.

  13. Sometimes you can use coupon codes while there's an official sale, so you get like 70% off while it's already 70% off. That's how I got ThirtyOne MK2 and Total EQ for 2,04 € each, for example (so 4,08€ for both of them). THAT feels like stealing. In my defense. I don't even use them much, I just bought them because they were cheap. In fact, I don't even know how to use some of them. I think they rarely have a manual, just a YouTube video or so.

  15. By comparison to Kontakt this is not even "in the ball park"

  16. Same. The interface just seems too difficult to navigate. And the samples don't seem to give me enough flexibility.

  23. Presonus Quantum was their first (IMO) great audio interface. Rock-solid... and super low round-trip-latency Later Quantum interfaces maintain that same level of performance.
    2 points
  24. Hi Steven, Orion Studio Synergy Core's round-trip latency at 96k using a 32-sample ASIO buffer size is 1ms. Takes a monster of a machine, but you can run some things (ToneX) with ASIO buffer size of 24-samples or even 16-samples. Both of those settings yield sub 1ms round-trip-latency. I prefer an audio interface that doesn't (itself) put a hard cap on lowest possible round-trip-latency. Only (effective) limiting factor is the speed of the machine.

  30. Maybe my standards are low, but IME, the stuff that people post on the Songs sub doesn't suck. Maybe by the time someone gets a song in good enough shape for their ego to handle showing it off to an audience of entirely musicians/home (and some pro) recordists, it's usually in halfway decent shape. Usually, if anything's "wrong," there are mix issues where the creator just needs to level up their skills a bit, reference more to their favorite mixes for comparison, etc. Frequency range collisions are something I hear a LOT of in hobbyist mixes (I wonder if Trackspacer is on sale, that thing is still the fastest, easiest way to help with that issue. Also problems with processing on the vocals (usually too dry, not enough highpass, inadequate control of dynamics, not the right kind of reverb for the material, and either too low or too high in the mix, depending on how the person feels about the voice). Heck, if someone has finished a track, that's something I've only been able to do on average about once a year. Not that I'm terribly down on myself about that, the hobby isn't necessarily a machine for getting songs out there (wherever "there" even is). I just like playing around with sound. I do like it when I create a finished piece, but it's all the fiddling with it that's fun.

  32. hawkwind - urban guerilla
Robert Calvert wrote and sang the lyrics, this being Hawkwind's only studio recording with a Calvert vocal prior to his rejoining the band as a permanent frontman and vocalist in 1976. At the time of the single's release, the IRA had instigated a bombing campaign in London and the BBC refused to play the single. After deliberation and the brief notion of promoting the b-side instead ("Brainbox Pollution", which dealt with the effects of drug misuse), the band's management opted to withdraw the single stating that "Although the record was selling very well, we didn't want to feel that any sales might be gained by association with recent events - even though the song was written by Bob Calvert two years ago as a satirical comment, and was recorded three months ago."[1] Dave Brock has subsequently stated that "It was stupid to withdraw it, they were paranoid they'd get bombed. I thought that record was what everything was about in the 1970s."[2] Calvert originally claimed the lyrics were a satire, but later claimed that "it didn't surprise me that it was banned by the BBC at all, in fact, I expected it to cause a lot of controversy".[3] Lemmy explains that "We once did a benefit gig for the Stoke Newington 8. They were anarchists of some sort (The Angry Brigade) - making bombs in your basement and all that. Urban Guerrilla was about that. That's what Calvert was like."[4] It had been reported at the time that Nik Turner's flat in Gloucester Road had been raided and searched by the bomb squad,[5][6] but a 1998 interview with Turner suggests that this activity was more to do with visiting Hells Angels wanted in connection with manslaughter.[7]
35. From 4400 sq ft. living space to 700 is going to take some getting use to. We currently live in a 1700sq ft. split-level house and sometimes we feel tight and other times we are like it is too big. Main thing is storage and hobby room(s) LOL. I could make do with a smaller place as the upkeep is getting to me. Alas upper age is getting to us. We did major housework yesterday with patching and painting from a remodeled bathroom because of water damage. My wife and I this morning are very sore this morning. At least it is mostly done now.

  36. Les Paul recorded three Top 10 hits in hotel rooms. Physical space need not be a limitation. I have a 3,000 sq ft house, but I only shower and sleep there. Most of my days are spent in a 400 sq ft garage with the windows permanently nailed shut. It's not even a proper studio, just a garage cloaked in a Home Depot's worth of rigid fiberglass. I'm guessing your frustration has other reasons beyond a downsized living space.

  37. Have you considered the possibility that your song actually doesn't suck? 😊 Philosophical spew time: I have an old saying, which I came up with after working at multiple companies that were going under: The Company Is Not Your Friend. This goes for consumers as well as employees. Companies, ultimately, exist to make money. How they go about that, and the ethics they adhere to, vary widely. But especially during a period where one is in danger of going under (as Cakewalk, Inc. under Gibson was), or gets sold to a company with management who um, "think different" about how they treat existing customers (as Apple did at the time of the eMagic purchase and still does), that ultimate reason for existence gets shoved to the front. The owners may just love their employees and customers like family, but when things come down to the company's survival, or the owners going broke propping up a failing business....they will choose their own, and their company's, survival before all else. Not cynicism, just reality, and something to remember when being an employee or customer, which we all are of some company or other. Nothing is guaranteed. My favorite plug-in company is Meldaproduction, I really dig their products, their policies, their business practices, everything but their documentation 😄. The owner is a cool guy and a genius developer. I have a lifetime license for their entire line of products, which I was able to afford due to making good use of their referral bonus program. If Vojtech sells the company (Image Line already owns a chunk of it) entirely, or it shuts its doors, there go my "lifetime updates." But that's really all in the game. There are no real guarantees. It's always at least a small gamble. You buy a $50,000 car with an extended warranty and the manufacturer goes belly up in 6 months, oops. Maybe another company will see a value in picking up the product in a way that will retain the current customer base, and maybe not. SONAR users got some of the best luck I've ever seen. Program reissued with a free license, cream of the development staff rehired, development model switched to developer-driven. Wow. Still, there were resentments about how the world could now get for free what they had paid for. When I buy a software license, I know I am buying the software as it is on the day that I bought it. If the developer improves it and shoots me free or cheap updates, excellent! My biggest purchases, iZotope Music Production Suite 5.5 and Meldaproduction MComplete Bundle, work great today. Due to the license terms, I'm entitled to "dot" releases from iZotope, and of course everything that Meldaproduction ever release. If both companies decide to shut their doors tomorrow, I still have my money's worth (and then some, considering how little I paid out of pocket). Both companies are well-known for selling excellent products, both suites work flawlessly. I am also an iPhone user. I love my iPhone. I also have a drawer full of iPhones that Apple, IMO, forced obsolescence on in ways that were unnecessary. But that's part of the game: I don't buy an iPhone expecting it to have a long life.

  38. For whatever the worth, the Sonar Lifetime Updates fiasco was done by Gibson, making a money grab, and was not initiated by the actual Sonar development staff. I will never for the rest of my life pay a single penny to Gibson, because of what they did with that money grab and then shutting down Sonar altogether. I am SOOOOO happy that Cakewalk by Bandlab emerged through it all, with development and support with the same staff from Cakewalk being hired by Meng who owns Bandlab. There is not a day that goes by where I don't silently thank Meng and Noel and the other folks who have continued to bust hump to keep Cakewalk by Bandlab alive, with Meng footing the bill to hire the Sonar development staff out of his own pocket. That was simply amazing. Bob Bone

  46. We live in a house that as originally built in the 50s with a breezeway between the house and the garage. The main house was originally (maybe) 650 sq ft (1 BR, 1 bath, small kitchen, living room). It the 80s it was upgraded with an additional 1389 sq ft. So, the house is listed with the county as 2039 sq ft (now a 3 BR, 2 Bath, larger kitchen, new family room and the same living room). Then someone converted the breezeway into a room (18' x 15') and then someone else converted the garage into a carpeted and insulated room and sealed off the garage door into a solid wall. Like Bitflipper, my studio and day job workstation is 400 sq ft. The wife works in the breezeway office.

  47. This was not too hard to get set up and working and it does exactly what I was looking for! I wanted something to remotely click play record stop etc. and I wanted something so I could tap in a midi drum sequence on my phone with a light touch of my fingers. For tom rolls, cymbals, snare, bass drum etc. I do not think the XYpads have velocity sensitivity but that is okay, I usually set everything at 64 initially anyway. It also works smooth as could possibly be even when Cakewalk is in play mode, and there is no perceptible lag with midi but I assume that could change once my project is proliferated with track and buss effects. I just bought this to enter midi. KAT Percussion KTMP1 Multipad Drum and Percussion Pad https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/KTMP1--kat-percussion-ktmp1-multipad-drum-and-percussion-pad I thought I could just use my fingers to tap in a beat but even with the sensitivity set high on the drum controller it requires a pat rather than a tap/touch. It randomly misses a tap. The phone app responds to even the slightest tap. This app stays connected all the time I only need to open it on my phone and as long as the midi track is selected in my DAW this controls it. I would like to return the drum controller to Sweetwater but I think it is cool and it could come in handy someday. It did not cost too much either and it is really easy to use. I could have used my midi synth controller for this but it also seems less responsive than the glass surface of my Samsung Galaxy s22 phone. Thank you for this suggestion. I have a complete electronic drum kit I bought about a year ago that I am still paying for on my credit card, for this purpose and never used sitting in my spare room all set up and covered with a cloth. I seem to find out these solutions shortly after I buy something that does not quite work. And the solution to this problem was about 5 dollars for the TouchDAW app.
