Sorry, but this position seems silly to me. You might not buy Cakewalk because of comments made by a user in a forum??? Sometimes people announce in the forum that they are done with Cakewalk for any of a number of reasons. Personally I think that people are entitled to use or to not use any software based on their own personal preferences, workflows, needs, etc. However, some users vent in the forum to publicly proclaim their dissatisfaction or frustration often pretending to ask questions instead of simply acting on their personal decisions to switch to other software. If you want to switch from Cakewalk to other software, that is a personal decision and in my opinion ought best be done on the basis of your satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the software.

Honestly, I'd pay for it as is. But I sure hope they didn't break it to make it look and act like everything else. The only thing that I find that's even close for my work flow is Cubase. Even that has some crucial problems for me. Probably my own fault for using one DAW for 30 years. I'm not scared to use the free version as long as possible if the new Sonar changes too much. Hell...I used Pro Audio 5 for about a decade because it did exactly what I needed it to do. But that was a lot easier to do in an era where you could avoid OS updates and you never let your machine on the internet.

I'm trying it out now. Works great with very low CPU use. It has a granular mode but also a loop mode and a one-shot mode, so very versatile. The only problem is that the samples I drag are not being set to C but to G and there's no way to adjust that from the interface. EDIT: you need to the Root drop down to Auto. It wasn't working at first but when you set it to Manual and then back to Auto it works. This is my main one-shot sampler now.

I have a few of their KONTAKT libraries and they're all very good. However, I stopped buying from them when they stopped making sample libraries for KONTAKT and switched to their own proprietary sample player. I really don't want another proprietary plugin to install, learn and maintain, especially when they're from small, one man sample developer businesses. The reality is, while I love small sample developers, they don't always stick around and it's not unheard of that one here today will be gone in the next 5 years. Now, if they make libraries for KONTAKT or UVI, it's often not a problem -- I have KONTAKT libraries from 10 years ago that still work fine. But if they're making proprietary sample players, it's a different story. Plus, having their own proprietary sample player means one more plugin to install, learn, troubleshoot, update, and maintain. Again, it's nothing against this developer personally, I like everything I have from him and never had any issues whatsoever. I just stopped buying from him when he switched to only making libraries for his own player. If he went back to KONTAKT, I'd happily consider his latest libraries. Of course, I realize not everyone will agree with me, especially those who don't own KONTAKT. I'm just stating my perspective, which I know is shared by many other KONTAKT owners.

Andrea is a talented sample developer who has been doing guitar and bass sample libraries for a long time. His libraries are very good. They're not ultra detailed type, highly sophisticated scripted libraries like Orange Tree Samples (who a lot of folks here are much more familiar with), but they're good, well recorded libraries and have their own strengths, IMO.. I think where they shine is the simple results you get with their approach to strumming. Disclosure: I've given business advice to Andrea many years ago and consider him a friend.

A Curated List of the Best Free Sample Libraries (for free sample players) and Free Soft Synths All libraries have been reviewed and a brief review is listed for each library. Finding free sample libraries is easy these days. Finding really high quality sample libraries that sound good and play well is a lot more challenging. The snare drum sounds thin and the heavy effects on most of the presets overwhelm the snare, it just gets lost in the mix. Still, these are 5GB of deep sampled drums with a built in mixer -- it's not extensive, but you can always route the outputs to use your own effects and mix the drums exactly as you like, and that's a pretty nice option for a free deep sampled acoustic drum kit; but it's also a bit of work. BFD Player also works with a large number of electronic drum kits and features more than 300 beats. I don't think it sounds as good or as professional as Steven Slate Drums, but it has enough going for it for a free drum plugin, that I'm still giving it my highest rating. Multiple articulations. I love the plucked and fingered patch. If you’re not concerned about emulating the sampled instrument, the plucked and fingered patch has a harpsichord like quality about it. Melodic Ping - Wine Glass Tool Kit Nicely sampled wine glass hits. Mixing Bowl ⭐ It sounds cool. It’s bold. It’s fun. I like it. Musical Stones It’s basically a xylophone featuring stones. It’s nice but the samples are a bit noisy. Still I like the character of the tone of the instrument and the noise doesn’t put me off as I see it as a bit lofi. Rob’s Andean Quena Flute Think lofi Mellotron flute. I really like this. Saraswati Vena Simple, nice. I like it. Shivering Keys A really interesting lofi analog piano that almost sounds like it could work in a horror soundtrack, but I think it’s slightly too sweet for that. Shivering Waves A lofi pad that sounds a bit like Shivering Keys in a pad. Signals Sound effects that are perfect for sci-fi. St Kathrin’s Bell It sounds great, like a church bell. But there’s a lot of noise in the samples. Synimer ⭐ A very 80s/synthwave-type pad that sounds very good. I don’t know the song, but it sounds a lot like the synth pad from one of the songs in the 80s movie, “Breakfast Club.” Timpani Hits Nicely sampled, good sounding timpani hits. RECOMMENDED FREE SOFT SYNTH PLUGINS Vital ⭐⭐ VItal is a free spectral warping wavetable synth and it is superb. I like it better than most of my paid synths. If you use soft synths, this is a must have, a total no-brainer. There is a paid version for $25 USD with 250 presets and another version for $80 USD with more than 400 presets. All of them are well recommended by the community. But the free version works with third-party presets that you can find at the site's forum and all over the interwebs. Yeah; I use it a lot, too. (I didn't freak out though; I looked for it.) On the other hand I freaked out with what for me is causing increased eye strain--the smaller size of the text in posts, the increased amount of white space, and the reduction of the amount of actual content displayed per screen. For me this means more nausea-inducing scrolling is needed to see what used to fit on a single page. I get that it is better for people who use mobile devices such as smart phones. However, I tried viewing the forum on my phone this afternoon (which I never do) and the text is way too small for me to read. If I expand the size, I have to scroll left and right in order to read each line of each post.

A long, long time... it was definitely there in Cakewalk Pro Audio 7 (which was the first version I bought back in 1997). I never used it until a few years ago though (and to be fair, I didn't understand what it did until then either 😉 )
