  3. Track 2 from the FreeEarCandy 2015 Collection. 2023 Remix & Master. Ingredients: Vocals, Sax, Electric & Acoustic Guitars, Keys, Bass, Drums. A song about senseless wars and aggression. "Without Any Meaning Can't Stop The Bleeding." The song begins with a slow atmospheric build to set the mood. Then things segue into a nice laid back sax riff before turning things over to the 1st vocal verse that concludes upon the arrival of a (Gilmour-ish) lead guitar adventure to take it up another notch or two. Then I walk it back down and deliver the second vocal verse, which sort of reminds me of a Daryl Hall -John Oates vibe, and then on to the finish. Enjoy the FreeEarCandy! !!!)))@(~..~)@(((!!!

  11. I can comfortably say that 99% of the time, the ProChannel EQ is my go to EQ for mixing duties. With 4 different EQ curve styles, if you can't get what you want from that then I strongly suspect that it's not the EQ that is the issue (i.e. it's a recording, arrangement or skills issue), and changing to a different EQ won't help. That being said, there are times when you need an additional EQ, either because you need EQ both before and after compression, or there is some detailed correction/shaping you want doing first and you want to leave the ProChannel EQ available for later. But in these cases a "colour" EQ probably isn't what I'd reach for. Personally, if I want the sound of a console, I either record through one or stick Kazrog's True Iron on the channel.

  13. Thursday's Joyful Journey is going to be very special as I welcome as my guest Maxime Luft. Maxime has developed several beautiful libraries under his Organic Samples label as well as his work with Orchestral Tools, this time he has started a brand new adventure in launching his own sample library company Streamtech Music. His first release under the new company is Iconic Violin and it is a very beautiful and inspiring instrument to play. Join me as we get a chance to talk with Maxime about this journey and the release of this new instrument. If there are any specific questions you would like me to ask Mxime during the livestream, please send it to me through a private message so that I can compile them and present them on the livestream time permitting. I will also be taking a look at the new POSTFELT Piano from Jon Meyer, and who knows what other stops we might make along the way. I look forward to seeing you:

  15. Here's a new song where I once again connected with lyricist Carroll Kiphen ( an expert in hurricanes, living in the southern USA(: Lately I've been trying to get some better bass sounds, so in this one I'm playing around with Modo Bass, a physical modeling software. I used to play bass in a band for many years, and this is the closest, and most flexible sound I've heard from a software based bass. This song uses a fretless bass . . . ya' . . . I could never actually play one of those ! Hope you enjoy . . . and let me know if the mix works . . . Regards, Bruce

  18. No worries, you've had a lot of advice here. Some good, some great - plus the odd thing I don't really agree with 😆. But I've made the journey from bedroom studio dabbler to writing for TV where it's expected that you mix and master your own tracks. These are a few things I've learned on that journey. 1. You can deliver decent mixes on any playback system if you get used to how it sounds 2. Get decent stands for your speakers - they will sound at their best this way 3. Proper room treatment helps a lot and needn't cost a fortune - You can mix without it it but it will take you longer 4. Plugins to even out the room sound like Sonarworks Sound ID are also a great help includindg the headphone version 5. Subs in a small room are a nightmare 6. If the arrangement sucks so will the mix 7. Being able to instantly switch between several different playback types is massively helpful i.e. Nearfields - Mono Auratone/Mixcube - Old Boombox / Computer Speakers 8. Taking a break is important to reset your ears every hour or so 9. A/B referencing against commercial mixes is the best free training and more easily accomplished with a dedicated plugin like Metric AB 10. It's easy to be tricked that something sounds better when it's louder 11. You don't need to tweak every single track in your mix - " Do no harm " is sometimes the best way 12. Topdown mixing is a good method to learn mix fast and effectively 13. L-C-R Panning is also a good technique that will make mixing simpler and faster and forces you into good arrangements 14. You can learn almost anything on Youtube 15. But the best way to learn is just do a lot of mixing i.e. My 600th TV mix recently was a lot better than my 1st from 6yrs ago

  25. Love my Orion Studio Synergy Core. I think the plugins are ok... but not superior to higher-end native offerings from UA, SSL, etc. One advantage of the hardware based plugins (like Apollo series) is that you can monitor with low round-trip latency (regardless of ASIO buffer size). Not crazy about the idea of paying yearly for native versions. Might have gone for a perpetual license.

  33. Really, unless you're a professional mixer, I would say the best thing to mix on is what you listen to music most on. Thinking back to when I used to do record demos in my mid teens to mid 20's - everything was done on 4 track or 8 track tape-based porta studios. Some of my friends tried treating part of their bedrooms and mixing down recordings on fairly decent speakers. However there was one friend in particular who looked like his headphones were a permanent attachment. His mixes were truly awful on speakers, but when he mixed on the headphones he wore 4-6 hours a day they translated incredibly well. The point is, if you're constantly listening to music on headphones, you know exactly what a mix should sound like on headphones. So mixing your own music on those headphones may be a far more familiar environment than mixing on a speakers. Obviously there will be potential issues with the low end (simply because the headphones may not be able to reproduce those frequencies) but a high-pass filter should remove those you can't hear. In any case, I've found with some consumer headphones the issue isn't lack of bass, if anything it's too much bass as they've quite often over-compensated in the design. I also don't completely buy into the whole "headphones don't give you a true stereo image" thing. If you always listen to music on headphones, then that's how you're used to hearing it, so your brain will likely adjust accordingly. Whatever you decide to mix on, the key is to listen to as much well-mixed music as possible on them, and over a long enough period (e.g. weeks to months) to truly get used to that environment.

  34. It's a huge subject and thre's a lifetime of learning to be had. The main goal is to have your mixes translate well to other playback systems . I would say making your mixes translate well is a more difficult skill with headphones than speakers but people do manage it . I always reccommend " Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio " by Mike Senior, it's a great step by guide to mixing that really helped me out when I needed to up my game.

  36. I did mine above like this: My overhead is a AEA R88 Stereo Ribbon mic. From the drummer's perspective (how I mix) Infront of the foam directly ahead is my Townsend Labs Sphere (set to stereo position) as my room mics. All cymbals are spot mic'd with Sennheiser e614, toms are Sennheiser e604. Snare top is Earthworks DM20, snare bottom is Shure SM57. And finally a right side audience perspective. I have a Shure SM81A shock mounted inside the kick (with a towel underneath it) and I (uh-oh) mounted an external XLR connector to the kick shell. That's a Solomon sub and a Shure Beta 52A. All drum mics go into my (3) Apollo x8p interfaces. I record with the Unison API mic pre's.

  38. Yeah, the real magic in how the SSL stuff works is by what boost and cut does with the EQ, whether it's more gentle or more narrow (so more surgical when being cut and more broad and musical when being boosted, and the combination of that making a great sounding overall EQ curve). Pretty much any EQ can match this stuff without a lot of problem at all, though, but it means just a little bit more manual work setting the Q to match how you're hearing it. The Pro Channel already has some nice SSL-like curves dialled in, like Mark said, but your ears should guide you for sure. Adding in the compressor and the tube or tape sim used sparingly, you can get some VERY hardware like emulation out of the Pro Channel. Slamming your drum bus through the tape sim module sounds awesome, as does heavy guitars! But Byron is on the money - use your ears. You can throw a test tone over it and use Plugin Doctor to check for phase, harmonic and frequency response and all of that but other than for a scientific curiosity, I'd put money on being able to get a "SSL Sound" just with the Sonitus stuff, let alone the Pro Channel.

  39. Hi Zargg. Listened to original version as well. Great choice of song to reinvent. Both versions sound great. Your vocals are extraordinary. I think the original has the overall clarity and mass accessibility that allows the listener to hear everything quite clear. So, right after I listened to the original I played yours. My ears at first couldn't hear much clarity as it seemed that more carving of the audio spectrum was needed to give each instrument a clear and present place to be clearly heard. I then listened to yours a few more times and my ears slowly picked up on your mixes completely different audio palette. So now I'm like.... both versions are excellently realized in completely different ways. Cheers!!🎶🎶🎶🎶
