  1. I should also mention we are working on giving customers access to their accounts/serials. We are under strict guidelines for the time-being, so we are limited with what we can do. But everyone's accounts are secure and we'll create an access point to them as soon as we are able.

  2. Time+Space was one of my favorite vendors. They didn't always have the best price, but their customer support was second to NONE! Those guys would bend over backwards to help! I am deeply saddened by this development, but my hat is off to them for their impeccable service and support!

  3. Sad to see them go. One of my preferred resellers, maybe even the one I preferred most. And their recent postings among us were quite welcome. Great to see them provide a means for us to get to our serials and downloads, as I’m not sure I got them all (or the latest versions).

  4. I started using Cakewalk in 1991. I've also worked extensively in Digital Performer and have spent time learning Pro Tools, Reaper and Cubase. Yes, I am biased. My bias is that I want to focus on music composition and production and have the software perform reliably and have it allow me to work the way I work without too many unnecessary keystrokes. I also put some emphasis on aesthetics, and for my eye nothing beats Cakewalk in terms of how it looks on the screen and the incredible flexibility in arranging it to look how you want. I've produced 15 albums with CW, soon to release #16. I've composed many songs, short pieces, 11 symphonies and 4 concertos with CW. The only trouble I had was when it went through an extensive re-vamp some 10 or more years ago. It became unstable and had a lot of bugs so I worked in Digital Performer for about a year and a half. When Gibson dumped CW and Bandlab picked up the pieces everything started to get better again--bugs were getting fixed promptly, new features were being added and so I switched back to CW. Here's what I think is really excellent about this DAW: 1. The event list is color coded. I spend a lot of time using the event list and it really makes it easier on the eyes to be able to choose the color for specific types of events. The font is a reasonable size too, some event lists are too tiny on other DAWS. 2. The instrument section lets you define in detail your instruments, articulations, cc numbers and other functions. When working with large sound libraries this is really useful. 3. The staff view finally got the snap functions corrected and is good for composing in SMN (standard music notation) if you know how. It's weakness is that it doesn't display tied or dotted triplets correctly and never has, but it's no big deal for me because I do all my scores in Sibelius and it's easy to correct them at that point. Because the staff view is laid out more like an arranger's pad than a 8.5x11 sheet of paper, it's much better for larger orchestrated works. Another weakness of the notation editor is it's not possible to export using .xml if you have more than a certain number of tracks. I get better results exporting with .mid (type 1). 4. CW handles VSTs extremely well, I have no problem with playback or recording. For the past couple of years I've had no crashes due to VSTs. 5. Recording and editing audio is where CW really shines in my experience. Recording is simple yet powerful, editing audio, particularly volume envelopes is very easy and precise, very powerful feature made easy to use. 6. Workspaces are fast, there's no delays caused by graphics issues when changing workspaces. I won't name names, but this is not true for other DAWS I've tried. Learning any DAW takes time. You have to really want to learn it well, and spend the time at the computer and reading the manual to get the most out of a DAW. This is true regardless of which one you choose. As far as value is concerned, you can spend many hundreds of dollars for the other DAWs if that's what you want to do, or you can get a DAW that is equal or better for free. Even if Bandlab started charging $500 for CW, to me it's still the best value. Here's one more of my biases: I am a trained classical composer and songwriter. I am not a sound effects person, and my mixing and mastering skills are honed specifically for my music and my music only. Everyone uses their DAW a bit differently depending upon what they are trying to accomplish and what they are best at. So choose carefully, because it does take a lot of time to learn another software program as complex as a DAW. Jerry p.s. After reading more carefully the OPs post, I realize I just wasted time on a guy who has come across as utterly insincere, who has already made up his mind and is looking to vent his frustrations. I thought I was being a "good guy" by helping a beginner! In any event, if someone reads my post and learns something about CW all the better, I doubt it will be the OP who is playing little mind games with us...

  5. Sorry to read this. I try to let people know when I appreciate them, and I'm glad my last correspondence with Time+Space was telling the support rep how helpful and friendly he was and they've always been (I needed to re-download some files for purchases that were several years prior and the support person was as nice and helpful as can be). I will miss Time+Space and want to thank them for many years of excellent service. I wish their employees the best and hope they are successful in their future endeavors.

  8. They are both listed as Ltd. companies so AFAIK that means that they are legally separate businesses with no financial responsibility towards each other even though in reality they might effectively be the right pocket and the left pocket of the same individual's trousers as it were.

  15. If true, I wonder if it was the intense competition among music software companies that drove them out of business. I'm definitely not a business guy, but have to wonder if this situation bodes ill for the remaining companies. How much cheaper can they sell their plugins and still stay solvent?

  16. What I find useful about Cosmos is the way it organizes my samples. When I use MediaBay I have to rely on my (modest) memory to know which sample library folder to look in, and this involves several iterations before I find the sample I want. Cosmos obviates that search process by allowing me to do a 'meta' search across all libraries at once. YMMV.

  19. Thanks guys for all the years, well over 20! Your customer and artist support was one of the best and friendliest! Also thanks for being the distributor and believed in my early work back in the days! All the best to you all for the future wherever that might lead you to! You should be proud of yourself what you have achieved! Love from Finlandia!

  22. Very sorry for the anonymity over the last few days. It's a very complicated process but we are indeed out of business and will no longer be trading. We have a statement on our Facebook page, but I will copy it here for everyone to read. We really appreciate the support from everyone over the years and we wish you all the best for the future. This account will not be monitored any further and will most likely be deleted in the coming weeks. I just wanted to say a personal thank you to the Cakewalk community, since I took over late last year, you have all been very helpful and welcoming and I'll be sad to leave it all behind. "To our valued customers, It's with deep regret that we have to inform you that Time+Space will no longer be trading. The decision has not been taken lightly and is as disappointing for us as it is for you. We understand that some people will be negatively affected by this decision and we ask for your patience while we work through this difficult process. We'd like to say a big thank you for all your support over the years - particularly those of you who have been with us since the early days, your loyalty has been hugely appreciated. T+S Team"

  23. My email said "You've been selected for this extra-special discount because you recently purchased another deal by Sample Logic from Audio Plugin Deals." And, I would add- because you are a FOMO plug-horder. But I am going to pass on this one. 😝

  24. Wait, you're saying that as if WUP is a bad thing. Waves is the only developer with WUP. It's an exclusive. It's the special sauce that makes their plugins extra-special good. It's like the colonel's 11 herbs and spices.

  25. What's really great about this is that Waves could have made Cosmos and CR8 into one integrated product, but they didn't. That means you look forward to twice as much WUP! How awesome is that???? Double the WUP enjoyment.
    3 points
  26. Well, as @Doug Rintoulpointed out here, there is quite a bit of usability with Cosmos by itself. The sample drag & drop to a DAW track works the same with or without a sampler like CR8. I tested Cosmos with a couple of integrated Studio One samplers like Sample One XT, and Impact XT, and you can drag the sample directly into the instrument UI, just like you can with CR8. So I'm not seeing any downside here to just using Cosmos with your DAW tracks, and/or any samplers you might have loaded inside the DAW.

  27. Not a think wrong with your voice, it's very rock' and roll. Great start here. I'm a big fan of your covers, you're always so faithful to the spirit of the original song. Can't wait till this one is finished! Larry's advice is good on dealing with noise between the blobs on vocal tracks. Another route is to use a gate, which is a device that senses the dB output level of your track and when it drops below a certain level it essentially mutes the output. You can set that level to any value you like. Play your song and fiddle with the threshold value till it does what you want - silence the stuff you don't want and plays the stuff you do. Gates are fun for other types of effects too, but that's for another day! I personally just manually split and crop clips till they only have the parts I want in them. I zoom in very tight to see exactly where the audio I want starts and I trim the clip right up to that point. It's tedious, and so is going through vocal parts and manually adjusting volume automation to get nice levels, but the results are worth the effort. Particularly if you're like me and you record in a room with your dog snoring and the AC running and the TV blaring in the next room! One thing I've recently invested in that has made a big difference in the quality of my vocal recordings is a mic shield, which is a bit of acoustic foam-coated steel that mounts on the mic stand and blocks room reflections and noise from getting into your mic. Saw one at GC and picked it up for a lark and man, what a difference! Turns out the less noise you have in your vocal parts, the less distortion compression imparts to the track and the nicer the sound. If you're going for warmth and clarity, it's great. Nowhere near as good as a real studio room but no way I'll ever have something like that. Some dudz on the interwebs have declared them snake-oil, but I think they're wrong. YMMV!

  28. It does scan subfolders but it does not have a subfolder view. This is actually is one of the features that I am disappointed to not see. I am also seeing that it is very slow to scan. I initially added my whole sample folder but it looked like it would take days if not weeks to tag the whole thing. Right now, I am just adding subsets of my collection to test it out.
