About Me

  1. Same here. He's the man. Did you know there's even a record label named A Strangely Isolated Place? BTW, Hoopla Digital, which is usually free with a library card, has the original mix/master of Strangely Isolated Place which I like better than the 2019 remaster. It sounds clearer and better balanced. Dave Tipper, Chris Zippel, Telefon Tel Aviv, Candlegravity, Steve Roach, so many discoveries thanks to SomaFM.
  2. Many good points here, Bitflipper, thanks! You're right, it's the equilateral triangle problem that causes me grief... I monitor at close distance so space is scarce. I am desperately trying to fit a dual screen setup, with potentially a 27" + maybe something extra within at tops 130 cm (51 inches). 😅 Wow, dual 34" sounds lovely. Yeah, if you'd not have stacked them you'd be doing midfield monitoring. I have to confess I'm not 100% on top of the terminology, but whatever it's called, Cakewalk doesn't handle scaling very well. (As a comparison, I used Ableton Live, which looks crisp on all scaling settings.) I'm a bit nerdy though, so I dug a little more: Maybe the correct term is "scaling unaware" (see Microsoft's blog post)? Or maybe it's different modes of "System DPI awareness": "Effectively, System DPI-aware desktop applications only render crisply at a single display scale factor, becoming blurry whenever the DPI changes." (Microsoft) One can use Task Manager to see what kind of DPI Awareness modes (Microsoft) an application reports to Windows. Here's what Cakewalk reports currently: UPDATE ADDITION: Back in 2019, Noel said: "This is a known issue and we have plans of gradually addressing it. Its not impossible but its a significant amount of work for the UI to fully handle DPI scaling in the app. Today we let windows do the best it can - hence the somewhat fuzzy images."

TBH that freebie was the first thing I got from them, back in 2019.
  4. Here's one of my favorite Hendrix tunes from his amazing Electric Ladyland sessions. I had some time available and wanted to start using the Fostex cassette recording deck I'd picked up. Just getting the song recorded was a trip. My keyboard player had an extra Mini Moog and let me grab it for my bass track. I used a Boss Dr Rhythm 550, my '70 fender strat, a Korg CX-1 organ and my Evolution guitar amp that 2 engineer friends and I assembled for the '86 Chicago Namm show that year. We designed this amp for the guitarist. It had everything I wanted...a fully integrated amplifier. First off, the head was 70 watts. We added 2 eq channels for clean (white) and (red) distortion, 2 inputs, loop in and out jacks, aux out and headphone jacks. A hard/soft button for the distortion effect and a flanger/chorus effect and analog delay effect. The low profile foot switch was color coded to match the effects with corresponding leds and the amp came as an individual rack mount, a stand alone head or a combo single 12 cabinet . It also had an extra speaker jack...I used 2 12" celestians. In the end, we made about 500 units and even got one to Robin Trower after a concert (whether he played around with it or not remains to be seen). In a year I'll retire and devote most of my free time to recording originals that've been swirling around in my head for decades as well as some of my favorite covers. I'm looking forward to increasing my skills with cakewalk and post my efforts. Here's to a better life through music! https://www.bandlab.com/post/27c7c510-4a05-ed11-b47a-281878315d59
  5. SSDs have limit for the number of writes (per cell). The number depends from used cell type. The number of reads is unlimited. In practice that was a huge problem with early "flash" cards/USB drives. They was not "smart", so particular cells used by the file system was always overwritten and so the life of such drives was extremely short. Modern SSDs always (over)write new cells. And they always have "extra" space used for the purpose (also can be configured, obviously available capacity is reduced then). In specification the number of overwrites is not mentioned directly. But a "tip" is normally there, just presented a bit cryptic way. F.e. Samsung 970 Pro 1TB mention "1200 TBW" (500GB has "600 TBW"). Which indicate the number of rewrites is at least 1000. Since they are "smart", you really need to write 1PB to such disk to approach the limit. Sure, the life time of the disk will be less then 2 years if it is completely overwritten every day. But recording music produce ~20TB for 2 channels 24bit/96kHz if continuously recording one year long... So, it will take 50 years to hit the limit The information about my current disk in desktop at home: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB, installed around 10.2019, the time PC/disk was on: 183 days, written so far: 7.4TB, specified write limit: 600TB. It is obvious I will replace the disk and PC long before I hit that limit.
  6. Our own, always very clever usability guy @Heinz Hupfer has a partial solution for the switching problem from 2019: to use the PRV in the multidock as a workaround. Then you can switch to the PRV (now in the multidock) with CTRL+TAB from the main window (Track View). Unfortunately, it's not really a workable solution for me, as I constantly close and open the PRV on selected tracks (ALT+3 to open) and the multidock doesn't remember its position on the second screen.
  7. I requested this in 2019 and many others before did so on the old forum
  8. Just a slight note about this. There are three XPro PAKS. The first one works with BIAB 2021 and the other two need 2022 The regular Xtra Styles require the version of BIAB that was out when they were released. So XtraStyles 13 needs the 2022 Ultrapak XtraStyles 11 & 12 need 2021 XtraStyles 9 & 10 need 2020 XtraSTyles 7 & 8 need 2019 and so on. BIAB does not make it easy to buy from them. Their site is really confusing. But they make up for it by having such excellent customer service. It's easy to get things sorted out.
  9. I like your way of thinking... but that's exactly what I said, "I looked up in my korg account" (registered on 2019.03.blah...) guess I will have to shoot an email to support, hope it's not that I stay on the collection #1 and they want me to pay for collection #3 to give access to their latest development
  10. I am confused by the recent revival of this old thread. What is new from what was originally discussed in 2019? Did the way Cakewalk uses MIDI data change? Is there something that was posted previously wrong? Did anyone ever follow up on these suggestions?
  11. I have BiaB 2019 which kind of works on M1, but has some display artifacts. Version 2022 is M1 compatible but it doesn’t say it’s M1 native so I assume it’s not (yet). Anyhow, the DAW plug-in is a great feature.
  12. I did it upside down. I let my beard grow, which served me well for the grand kids at Xmas 2019. Then i shaved. But i haven’t shaved for a few months now, and have got past the itchy stage. To shave or not is now the question…… But it never made me a better player (or worse for that matter). YMMV J
  13. I had this working in the past. I used to see a message to 'select midi inputs' when opening CW but no longer seeing this. Running CW 2019.11 on Windows 11 PC.
  14. It looks like something is messed up with the Windows redist installer state. Uninstalling and reinstalling might be the only solution, or you can contact Microsoft support who may be able to help. Dear VR Updates

Well, I'm now confused. I just two days ago ran the Installation Manager and updated/reinstalled all of my plugins including VR dearVR PRO. When I hover over the plugin's GUI it shows Version 1.4.1 (Dec 03, 2019)? Choosing the ? icon doesn't help and just takes you to the product pages.
  16. [UPDATE 26-Jul-2022: Cakewalk 2022.06 Update 1 (build 28.06.0.034) now available] Introduction The 2022.06 release introduces Mackie control surface improvements, loop and punch record enhancements, key binding to render Region FX, support for local help, in-app update improvements, plus various enhancements and bug fixes for user reported issues, all in keeping with our goal of making Cakewalk as reliable and enjoyable as possible. Please note that in order to automatically keep your activation status up to date, Cakewalk will renew your activation status whenever a new version of the application is installed and run for the first time, and when you sign in to BandLab from within Cakewalk. If you have never signed in to BandLab from within Cakewalk, you will be prompted once to sign in. The following highlights are intended to provide an overview of the more significant changes. Please also refer to the new features section of our documentation for more detailed information on the features. Please give us feedback on this release. We hope you like it! Update Jul 26 2022: 2022.06 Update 1 (build 28.06.0.034) Bug fixes: Audio Export presets not changing file type Extend Takes to Punch Out Time always reverts to loop End time when not loop comping Extend Takes to Punch Out Time / Comping Loop extend clip behavior should also work for MIDI clip recording Note name changes in Piano Roll view revert after clicking note Tracks are added in reverse order when moving to folder Process Effect plugin window requires minimum size Some users experiencing Activation Error 20 Updated to latest Microsoft VC redistributables 2022.06 Highlights Automatically extend final take when loop recording in Comping mode When loop recording in Comping mode , the last take now automatically extends to the loop end time if more than one loop iteration was recorded. This prevents previous takes from being split at the transport stop time, and makes comping much easier because each take is a complete clip. Note: If you loop record in Comping mode and also have auto punch Extend Takes to Punch Out Time enabled, then the last take will be extended to whichever occurs first: loop end or punch out time. Old behavior (incomplete last take and split clips): New behavior (complete last take and no split clips): Option to automatically extend final take when punch recording When Auto Punch recording, Cakewalk automatically splits all takes at the position where you stop recording. This happens if the transport is stopped before the punch out time. This behavior may not be desirable in some cases, such as when speed comping, where you want each take to be a complete clip. To prevent this behavior, Cakewalk now provides an option to extend the final take to the Auto Punch end. Right-click the Record button to open the Preferences dialog box, then enable Extend Takes to Punch Out Time. Note: The Extend Takes to Punch Out Time option also requires that Auto Punch is enabled. Mackie control surface improvements The Mackie Control surface includes several new enhancements. New compatibility modes In addition to the recommended Cakewalk/SONAR mode, the Mackie Control surface now supports two extra emulation modes that can be used if your control surface does not provide a dedicated Cakewalk/SONAR mode: Mackie Control Universal (Universal Mode). Emulates Mackie’s default button layout. Mackie Control Universal (Cubase Mode). Emulates Mackie’s Cubase/Nuendo button layout. It is important that both Cakewalk and your control surface are configured to use the same mode in order to ensure that buttons on the control surface map to the correct functions in Cakewalk. Note: If your control surface provides a Cakewalk/SONAR mode, we recommend using this mode to provide maximum compatibility. Disable Handshake now checked by default Earlier versions of the Mackie Control protocol required a handshake during the initialization of the control surface. Mackie removed this requirement in later versions. To reflect this change, the Disable Handshake option is now checked by default to bypass the handshake process. Note: You may have to uncheck Disable Handshake on older devices when using the Cakewalk/SONAR mode. Performance enhancement Routing and track/bus ordering are now cached internally in order to avoid unnecessary repeated calculations during the control surface refresh process. This results in improved UI performance when using a very fast refresh rate. The cache is reset every time the routing or track ordering changes, and then rebuilt again on the next query from the control surface. Option to open parent track folder when changing track focus The Track view Options menu contains a new Expand Track Folder on Track Focus option, which automatically opens the focused track’s parent folder if it’s currently closed. This behavior may be desirable when using control surfaces or changing track focus via the Console view. Key binding to render Region FX A new key binding named Render Region FX allows you to render any Region FX for any active Region FX in the current clip selection. You can assign the key binding in Edit > Preferences > Customization - Keyboard Shortcuts (under Area: Global Bindings). Support for local help Cakewalk provides optional local help. To enable local help, go to Edit > Preferences > File - Advanced and select Always Use Local Help. When you enable local help for the first time, Cakewalk presents a toast notification to download and install the local help, and whenever updated local help is available. If your computer is not connected to the internet, Cakewalk will default to showing local help until an internet connection becomes available. Note: Offline help is only available in English. Tip: If you would like to use local help on a computer that is never connected to the internet, first download the local help from another computer that is connected to the internet, then copy the CakewalkHelp_Documentation_1.0.0.n.exe installer (found in \Downloads\Cakewalk) to removable media that you can transfer to your offline Cakewalk computer. Alternatively, copy the installed Cakewalk.chm file from the Cakewalk root folder (default is \Program Files\Cakewalk\Cakewalk Core). In-app update improvements Cakewalk now supports in-app download of optional content that was previously only available from either BandLab Assistant or the Cakewalk Web installer (Studio Instruments Suite, Drum Replacer, Melodyne trial, Theme Editor, and demo projects). To see all available updates, select Help > Check for Updates. If any optional content has not been installed yet, or an update is available, Cakewalk presents a toast notification to download and install the content. Add file name to the download progress toast notification so users know what is being downloaded. Display error message when attempting to download multiple updates or checking for updates while one is in progress. Support for ARM64 PCs running Windows 11 for ARM Cakewalk will now install to ARM64 PCs running Windows 11 for ARM. Latest release notes are here. See prior release notes. 21. You got it. Long story: I'm a geek for corporate history. I've read every book written by former Fender employees (and there are a LOT of them!), books on Vox, Slingerland, Intel, Apple. I don't mention it around here, but I started a musical equipment company myself about 20 years ago. I was in the second wave of boutique stompbox builders and worked as a consultant to other boutique effects and amplifier companies. I've made many a trip to the NAMM show, and even seen my product ideas influence the companies who now own the brands that originally made the products I had reissued in boutique form. An interesting conceptual loop. It's a tangled web we weave even when we're not trying to deceive. Prior to starting my own company, I worked at Orban Associates, Nady Systems, and a variety of software companies including Macromedia (bought by Adobe). Macromedia was notorious for buying up promising products....and killing them. Deck was a sad example. Some here may remember that debacle. The SONAR story without the happy ending. They eventually hit it HUGE when they acquired a company whose main product was called Future Splash and renamed it Flash....which ruled the web for about 20 years. I don't know who might remember this, but back on the old forum, I was the biggest rah-rah about how the BandLab acquisition and freeware model might just result in the product becoming better than it ever had been. I was obnoxious about it at times. But I understood what was going on. Someone who cared had picked up the product, and he had done it before with Heritage Guitars. When I was 11, I acquired a stepfather who had already owned a company in Los Angeles that made fiberglass boats. Before music, boating was my main hobby and interest in life. I soaked up all of his stories of how companies go astray, observed in the next decade as he rescued multiple companies from the brink of ruin. This was getting toward the end of the era that saw CBS and Norlin going around snapping up peripherally-related companies that nobody at the home company either knew how to run or even wanted to run, and believe me, there were just as many sporting goods companies that suffered from this. Ron's biggest success was at a company called American Fiberglass, who had been bought by Ithaca Gun. Because who knows better what to do with a sailboat company than a gun company? One part of the Norlin story that's not mentioned often is that it was formed when a South American beer and cement company bought CMI. Because who better knows what to do with....you know the rest. The problem with the strategy in this era was that the acquiring companies overestimated the synergy, including how their corporate cultures would work together. I'm not as up on the Norlin years at Gibson, but I know a lot about the rise, fall, and resurrection of Fender. A fundamental flaw with the late 60's and early 70's acquisition culture was that these companies were founded and run by people who had a passion and great understanding for the products they were making. Leo Fender was a tech geek and music fan who was still inventing things up until about a week before he passed on. Gibson of course also had a great history of building great guitars and innovation. The pleasure boat business is similar. They're all founded by boating nuts who turn to design and construction. No ding whatsoever on a beer and construction materials company successful enough to buy an established American musical instrument company, or CBS/Columbia, who were and are legendary. However, the executives at these companies who were sent in to manage the new acquisitions joined the parent companies because they wanted to work in the industry these companies specialized in. People who worked at CBS wanted to work in the entertainment industry in New York City, not in manufacturing in California. It was probably similar with Norlin. You can be a brilliant in the beverage industry and/or construction, and passionate about it as well. And there is probably synergy between beer and cement. Construction workers buy lots of both things 😄. No, actually, they're both made by mixing up bulk ingredients. At CBS, Fender was where careers went to die. The only hope these people had was to try to make Fender as profitable as possible so they could get sent back to New York. And no mystery what happens when that is the sole motivation for coming to work every day. In this era, Gibson was playing catch up with Fender for popularity. That Sonex guitar was a Gibson-shaped guitar built like a Fender. Screw-on removable neck (as you point out, for servicing and replacement, Gibsons are notorious for headstock cracks), drop-in pickguard with electronics all in place, etc. The best hope of salvation for these brands is subsequent acquisition by people who are passionate about the product. Bill Schultz and his crew with Fender are my favorite example. I watched Ron do it with American Fiberglass. Ron was living on a boat when he married my mom. The companies' original products also have to be popular enough and have enough reputation for something to survive. Fender guitars and amps? Heck yeah. Slingerland and Rogers Drums? Rhodes electric pianos? Sadly, not. So when Meng picked up Cakewalk, I had informed theories of how it might play out. He wisely rehired the people who were passionate about the product. I know about software development and music companies from the inside. It makes using Cakewalk more fun for me, watching to see what happens as far as product quality. I'm rooting for it. That's a cool piece of musical instrument history you have. And for maintenance and repair purposes, having the neck able to be removed makes for much easier refretting and other work. You don't have to protect the body while you're doing it.
