About Me

  1. Beautiful. Actually cool to watch, who would have said the production actually had a great sense of humor, too. Very British, reminded me of Droopy - that little dog that had a long face when he said he was happy. The near/far - whisper/screaming examples are an illustration that I use when speaking about the the necessity to pass every dry sound/sample through a room emulation/IR, to recreate the natural behavior of sound playing in a space, without which to me it sounds flat, and artificial. It's a big part of generating a three-dimensionality that's missing in digital mixes, it helps you define the size of every instrument, it helps you organize the sounds, depth wise, and it also contributes to reducing harshness even while actually livening up a sound - in connection to the mention about "air", before. And it has a huge role in defining a mix's character. Another thing that's missing in today's everyday digital mixes, even though all the tools are there - because of some false equations developed in consequence of attaching ego to labels like "modern", etc., and not putting in the hours to listen to great music from the past. It's the first time I've ever seen something like that delay loop cassette. A lot of high level thinking and precise engineering went into the electro-mechanical devices of those days. My hi-fi stereo with autoreverse on remote, loop playing, tape counter, and CD changer, with programmable recording from a multi- CD customizable playlist. Lots of pressure sensors, mechanical arms, gears... Even a simple VCR. Everyday consumer products - a lot of complex engineering went into those, with very little room for error. Thanks for the video.

  4. GAside from doing CD type of band productions, I also started doing a series at my studio called "Recorded LIVE! at Over the HIll. Its kind of inspired by the show Live at Daryl's House. I get a bunch of different talented musician friends from the Canton Ohio area for a 3 - 4 hour session and we play LIVE a number of songs, mostly covers, that we can all follow and I also video record these jams with multiple cameras. I have a small PA in my studio and a bunch of channels are split to both the PA and my interfaces. My drums are always ready to go. Then when done, I mix the material in CBB and do a lot of editing on the vocal tracks to trim out as much bleed as possible and do the same for the tom tracks but everything else is untouched and ALL the performance are 100% live! NO OVERDUBBING. Check out some of these videos in my playlist. These represent "highlights from the 5 shows I've done so far and I have some great ones planned for he next few months with more really talented local players! Canton, Ohio is rich with great musicians! I think you'll all find them really cool and enjoyable! I don't take these mixes anywhere near as far as I would if they were full blown CD productions but they so sound great and really "pop"! These should flow from one to the other so I think to skip you can hi the next arrow. ENJOY and FEEL FREE TO SUBSCRIBE AND SHARE THESE!!! btw: the upper left icon in the video shows a listing of the playlist so you can sample these however u want.
  5. The only working version for this was sonar 8.5, after, all other versions bugged when a song is loaded from a playlist instead of file-Open.

  9. You have a point. But then, it's difficult to make it worse than the original. 😉 I did find it interesting, although I won't be putting it on a playlist. Wibbles, you might like this cover better People Get Ready - Eva Cassidy
  10. My 2 cents (which means I'm probably due change 😆). As I've posted before, back in 2003-4 I had a $4,000 stereo setup and tested .wav's and .mp3's at all sorts of resolutions. From an intellectual stance, I know a person can realize a much larger range than is usually specified (20 Hz to 20,000 Hz); I even have devices I used during my PhD work that go up to 100,000 Hz (like an Echofone Ultrasonic Listening System first created to attempt to communicate with dolphins). Although you may not consciously hear frequencies outside of the usual range, we found evidence that a person IS getting some benefits, primarily in the accelerated learning area. However, from a more realistic point of view, I had started importing all of my music to hard drives and the space usage for wave files was excessive! Back then, I had to have a multi-bay external hard drive just to hold a small portion of my collection. In the early 2000's, the largest hard drives typically available were only 250 GB and I had four of them for 1 TB total. For reference, here's one example of the file size differences: A quick calculation tells me that, if I had kept everything as .wav files, my current collection would require about 35 TB's to store! So, back to the tests. I created a sample .wav track that had short portions of several songs from different genres. I then converted that track into all the different file types and resolutions I wanted to test and appended these to the end of the original .wav file. I then put all of them into a playlist (I named each track to easily see what it was). I then shuffle played those so I wouldn't know what was being played ahead of time. As I listened, first without headphones, then with, I wrote down comments about the track before checking the file name. The results were interesting to me. I could easily hear the differences between the .wav reference track and all resolutions below 192 kbps, so I removed those and retested. Even with the decent gear I was working with, I really didn't notice anything that made me want to use a resolution above 192 kbps, so that's what I went with. While this information isn't an exact match to the topic because I'm talking about music I'm listening to, I thought it might be interesting. I should also note that whenever I'm creating a new audio track that I actually go in the other direction. I always use tracks and stems that are higher quality than what a resulting CD of 16-bit/44.1 kHz would be (typically 24-bit/96 kHz). This allows me to run them through things like effects processors without losing quality (like how the accumulation of rounding errors of old gear basically left you with something like a 14-bit song back in the day!). My thinking is that, if you start with the highest quality, you can always downgrade it. I use this same approach with graphics and video. YMMV! 😉
  11. This looks very interesting. I wonder how it might work in a livestream setting? I use Waves Voicecentric and Playlist rider. We shall see. Here is an article I posted on my website with some more background info. https://wp.me/p6Mqqs-xe
  12. I read this as "McCartney ill" and was checking in to see if the Walrus was doing poorly. Assuming we can really know who wrote what in that excellent team, I would disagree respectfully, I think you don't have enough Lennon-only songs to stack up against Blackbird, Hey Jude, Yesterday, Let it Be, the Long and Winding Road, Eleanor Rigby, And I Love Her, I Saw Her Standing There, Eight Days a Week, I'll Follow the Sun, Drive My Car, Fool on the Hill, Back in the USSR, When I'm 64, a ton of the Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road ones, Penny Lane, and even some Wings songs like Let 'em In and that James Bond one. Michelle is I think brilliant from the standpoint of arrangement and chord structure, and it might be 20th on the list. You could maybe say that Lennon rocked a little harder and was less mindful of pop or jazz than Paul was. Here's a nice list: https://www.google.com/amp/s/faroutmagazine.co.uk/paul-mccartney-beatles-every-song-hes-written-playlist/amp/ Now who wants to talk Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic?
  13. Here is the full YouTube playlist for Scaler from Plugin Boutique, which provides a good feature overview. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFWyKYiiiIjAyooer13GbqA But I think I will still pick up the Producer's Guide because it goes over several workflow scenarios which I think would be useful, plus gets into some practical hands on use. Things such as chords and accompaniment, basslines, to creating a full arrangement.
  14. I'd go through this playlist. The plugin boutique course (i.e. Producer Guide) is good also (which I'm not sure if it has been updated with the 2.2 features, I'm thinking it is outdated as it was released right at the time 2.0 came on the scene), but there really is plenty for Free to get started by one of the Co-Devs on the project.

  16. The only issue we had with Atari's was the power would go out and it took a good 10 minutes to get things up and running again. Was the Alesis a Midi player like the Roland Sound Brush? My partner had that and the Sound Canvas as his gigging rig for a long time. My self at that time 1992-3 I transferred ( in real time) all my backing tracks to a Sony Mini disk. Goodbye Atari. It was small and sounded great but I lost all that midi driven patch change stuff. I also lost my foot controller that started and advanced songs. Since then I have had to manually select my Reverbs But I did get my foot controller back when I started using a laptop. And I could certainly return to using midi do control lights and hardware. This would involve the Cakewalk playlist. I'm to old to change again! There are virtually no gigs now anyhow.
  17. The Master Bus is in the bus pane which might be hidden at bottom. Use shift B to unhide bus pane. It might be best the OP watch a few of the tutorial videos as it will be a lot of repeating information already easily accessible. They are just struggling with the very basic set up procedure. https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/forum/35-tutorials/ These are the ones supplied by Cakewalk. Then I have a series as well https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGsURWrKGeu-fFyg3ETjF-Ox&si=Re3ESH2b1Cl9zlSL
  18. This is the heart of the matter. With software we often get it in our heads that things should work the way WE want them to work. This is rarely the case as the developers are computer geeks and some luckily are real musicians who get into music software for this very reason, dreaming of software that works for you. So that person develops the software that works for THEM. They release it and then get 1,000's of requests for updates to make it work for others. If your lucky one of these people will grant your wish in a update that many requested. If your the only person asking for some specific upgrade it will likely never happen. Bottom line is most times we pick the DAW software that works the closest to our way of working/ thinking. For some this takes years of demoing a lot of stuff! I'm lucky I just happened to pick Cakewalk because I would have probably ended up using it anyways. So we use the best parts of it and avoid the buggy poorly done stuff like Playlist, Staff and Lyric view and move on to what works for us. Obviously most Cakewalk users are happy to either use a real or virtual notepad. You can bug the developers to give the lyric view some love, but unless a lot of other support this they will probably spend time on more interesting things.
  19. Some very positive and illustrative reviews of the Tonespot series in here (and also MixChecker) https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUgBsRWKssve3NNSIMeRVGk7mBzlC3Vxk
  20. since bbc radio went subscriber only, i've been listening to music at bed-time, here's last nights \9it's yt playlist, not sure if it'll work)
  21. Another enjoyable one Kenny. I don't know if this has been discussed before but each song in it's own thread works for me - some days (like today) my "at work playlist" is this sub forum and it helps me quickly and easily see what's new vs. ongoing discussion on something I've heard. Music is meant to be shared and I don't think anyone should feel awkward making a new post for each song. Looking forward to your next...
  22. @Psalmist35, Great rendition . Good work with the mix. Also, thank you for enabling download. This is now in frequent rotation on my Christmas playlist.
  23. Also notice that Playlist window sizing will not allow stretching to bottom when using fullscreen without jumping to top of screen. Does not maintain location when moving from full screen to normal display size.
  24. After further investigation: A project that contains a loop that is saved in the "ON" state will load by itself in the "On" state. The same project when loaded from the playlist will load with the Loop function in the "Off" state and "crash/end" playback at the end of the loop marker.
  25. (This should be the playlist for their whole new album, Mind Over Matter.)
