  1. Sorry for the unexplained absence! Our power went out for 3 days - up until late Friday night, and when it came back on, the Internet did not! I left for Memphis on Saturday morning (still no internet) at 5 am. Here are some pics from the trip, and I just got home at 1:30 am this morning! https://www.facebook.com/cclarry122700/posts/pfbid0StQ4s6Re6gFduuyL3P1FLxKUNKZE8VF2N4LYVwJ3ZAbMdqBfwZNKrZz183is6ewrl

  4. It's worth mentioning, that it's not possible to always use all cores all the time. Depending on the routing of your project, it may or may not be possible to spread the load. Some things have to be done in a certain order, which will inevitably mean that there will be bottlenecks in the chain. On top of that, there are certain tasks that just can't be parallelised. Some resources can't be shared, and some resources can be to an extent, but can only allow one process to have exclusive access at a time. Context switching to give multiple threads access to resources adds additional CPU time, so in some cases it actually takes more time to spread the load that it would just letting a single thread do its thing. CPU speed is the generally the biggest factor when processing plugins. Having multiple cores will help, but only in the situations where processing can actually be done in parallel. Obviously UI and Audio Processing can be done in parallel (so a minimum of 2 cores is a must), but there are limits to what parts of the audio processing can be done in parallel. As a simple analogy, you may be able to get 16 people to wash 16 mugs at the same time, but you can't get 16 people to wash the same single mug at the same time. IMHO, a CPU running at 2.6Ghz with at least 4 cores is the bare minimum for any DAW. Ideally you want 3.4Ghz or more. I've certainly run Cakewalk on much less than this, but that's generally been for tracking only, and with no plugins.

  7. Your love of the blues is apparent (same here). I loved BB King's playing and songs. Glad you enjoyed your trip, Larry! On a related note, one of the last remaining blues greats from that era, Buddy Guy, turned 87 the other day. And he's on his last tour before hanging up the towel. To be cited as a major influence on Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, SRV, Keith Richards, John Mayer...that's one heck of a legacy.

  9. Thank you MM! It was a nice trip. My cousin was there for a Business Conference, so I went there to keep her company. I had never been there, so thought it was an opportunity to see some of Music history!

  15. We're glad you're back safe and sound! I would leave town too if I had a three day power outage in the summer. I live about an hour from Memphis and it's a neat place. Lots of great music there of all styles and the blues still gets a major nod on Beale Street. I'm glad you had fun and got to experience some southern hospitality.

  18. Hats off if the Bakers have managed to create a fully scalable, vector-based GUI that looks pretty much like CbB. I remember that Ben Staton in a post three years ago mentioned that a revision of the GUI was about to begin late 2020, so there have definitely been a major code rewrite going on.

WARNING: If you have an earlier Elements version then it's probably not wise to "upgrade" to the newest version. They seem to give you less manual control in the newer ones.

  25. I use a layered piano/pad live and use this in sidechain to duck the pad signal when the piano is triggered. Compressor could do the same thing but love the simplicity & transparency. I have the main trackspacer knob assigned to a knob on my midi controller to adjust the effect live as well if i want to go overboard with it. Love that you can select the affected frequency range easily as well

  29. Gear4Music are probably now the biggest musical instrument retailer in the UK nowadays. I get most of my stuff from them now, unless something is significantly cheaper elsewhere. BTW - their SubZero SZM-10 is possibly the best SM57 clone I've ever heard. I think people have realised it, because it's now 50% more expensive than it was when I bought a load of them.

  30. Will have to check this one out too. As for Vicious Antelope, pretty hit and miss and I would agree on the experimental comment. I have got some nice presets from them, but some that I would never use and never bother trying to understand, or recreate. As long as I get some ideas from them then they're worthwhile, but otherwise they just take up space and time. Not a fan of a lot of developers just reusing a bunch of wavetables so a preset pack is 500mb.. I'm more impressed when a developer creates amazing sounds with only stock, or no wavetables.

  31. Has anyone tried them yet? I can't at the moment. I have a bunch of Vicious Antelope presets for Pigments that I also got for free, but I wasn't very impressed by them. But to be fair, I didn't spend much time with them. If I remember it correctly, the sounds were mostly experimental and soundscape, drone and ambient presets, nothing that I would usually use that much, personally. Might be good for others, depending on the genres you're into. I didn't like that most presets had generic names, I think it was like Desert 1 to Desert 20 and such. By the way, I've also given a link to a free Dune preset pack in another thread, I'll post it here too, since it fits: I'm not making a post for it, since it's not a deal but a freebie that's free forever.

  34. I was inquiring about MAutoDynamicEQ, not Trackspacer. I've never used Trackspacer on a full mix; the more things you're ducking with it the more likely you are to hear it working, which you aren't supposed to. The way I see its job is to reduce collisions between instruments rather than to carve out a space for one instrument in a full mix. I use it on things like guitar vs. synths, where I have one or more synths that are stepping on the guitar(s). What I do in that situation is that (if I don't already have one) I create a bus for Synths. Then I insert Trackspacer in the FX Rack of the Synths bus. On the guitar track (or bus, depending), I create a send, with Trackspacer as the destination. Then set the large center knob on Trackspacer for the amount of ducking I want. A good starting place is to apply it until I can hear the process of the synths being ducked, then back off a bit and finalize. (that took way longer to type than it does to actually get Trackspacer set up) That is a fine concept for a mixer who can choose his bass and kick sounds from an endless menu before he starts trying to get them to fit together. For people who are working with "a 22-inch cylinder with a plastic membrane stretched across it, hit with a felt hammer operated by someone's foot, recorded with a microphone" vs. "a steel wire plucked by someone's finger exciting a magnetic transducer," there will more often be situations where the sounds will overlap and become indistinct. If I'm creating a song from the ground up with complete control over what sounds I'm using (synthetic), I'll usually just pick and choose the source sounds so that they won't interfere with each other. I hadn't thought about it, but I guess my compositional brain kind of does that automatically. I imagine that Mr. Mau5 works the same way. In electronic genres, you can have way different kick and bass sounds on each song. If it's a rock song with guitar, bass, keys and drums, and the band have a signature sound they want to get across, it's a much different process. Trackspacer is a problem solver. Of course it's best to avoid problems as far upstream as possible.

  35. I appreciate the friendly step forward there, John I think we all have crappy days and sometimes don't make the best decisions when posting - I've certainly been there! Written word is notorious for being taken out of context too; it can be hard to read the tone of something when it's just pixels on a screen. English sometimes isn't a first language, and communication skills for these kind of places can really differ a lot from person to person too. Like I mentioned in the other locked thread, I think we all just need to keep in mind that there's an actual person on the other end of these posts. Listen, I know sometimes some people who respond to my posts are intentionally taking them the wrong way just to troll - forums are like that, even the good ones like this place, and I've been admin/mod on forums for the last 25+ years... I've seen the best and the worst of this stuff - but I'll go out of my way to give the poster the benefit of the doubt just in case it's one of those scenarios above that I mentioned. Let's all try to be mindful and show some empathy, and keep this place as friendly and inclusive as it can be!
