  1. Hey! I'm one of the devs on the MicroMusic project. We're just a bunch of students so, admittedly our product isn't perfect yet but we're working on improving it every day so stay tuned for updates. Two days ago we released a new version that should address the issue you had @audioschmaudio The problem was we were assuming the input was a specific type of WAV file. Feel free to join our Discord server to help us make improvements and stay up to date with the latest changes: https://discord.gg/fqkWSJzte6 Thanks for your interest!

  4. https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/downloads/ https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/changelog/ Changes in Surge XT 1.3.0 We released Surge XT 1.3.0 on December 8, 2023. This release contains a wide variety of performance-focused enhancements, new effects, expanded DSP, and many bug fixes and small improvements. You can now gain complete control of the synth using OSC, use MIDI Program Changes to load patches, and have access to a command-line only version of the synth for embedded and headless applications. The new effect, Bonsai, is an exciting tape and saturation model. Expanded ring modulation options in the mixer allow for a myriad of growls, squeals, boosts, and signal combinations. The expanded Tuning Editor gives a variety of realtime visualizations for your scales and tunings. Plus, we have added some new patches and modulator presets. And these are just the headlines! More detailed changelog is as follows. Open Sound Control Added a complete Open Sound Control implementation. For more information, see “OSC Settings > Show OSC Specification
” in the main menu MIDI Added support for MIDI Program Change messages The user patches folder can now contain a MIDI Programs Patches at the root of MIDI Programs folder will form Bank Select 0, if present Subfolders inside MIDI Programs folder will form Bank Select 1
127, if present In each bank, patches are sorted in alphabetic order Only the first 128 patches will be available from every folder Added support for discerning MIDI channel when MIDI learning parameters Disallowed MIDI learn on reserved MIDI CCs (like Bank Select, Data Entry, RPN/NRPN, All Sound Off, etc.) Fixed a bug where when Dual scene mode with MPE enabled, Play Mode set to Latch and “Use MIDI Channels 2 and 3 to Play Scenes Individually” option disabled would trigger voices on the unlatched scene Command Line Interface Implemented a pure CLI version of Surge XT for headless (no GUI) operation This is available as surge-xt-cli on Linux, cli executable in the standalone bundle on Mac, and as a separate install for Windows users Combined with OSC and MIDI Program Change support, this allows a variety of new and useful embedded and headless implementations Effects Bonsai is a really organic sounding distortion effect, combining a highly non-linear bass boost with an emphasis-filtered waveshaper and noise AM. It excels at a wide range of very beefy gnarly sounds, but can sound very good at subtle settings too Audio In is the same functionality as the Audio In oscillator type, simply allowing you to insert audio into the signal path downstream from filters and waveshapers Y and Z filters are freshly added members of the Airwindows effect now Ring Modulator effect now also has audio input available as carrier Added extendability to Delay effect’s Feedback and Crossfeed parameters (making them bipolar), and Mod Depth parameter (increasing it from 2 semitones to an octave) Fixed a bug where Tape effect’s Drive parameter Precision options and Delay effect’s Feedback Limiting options (in right-click context menu) didn’t load correctly DSP Ring Modulator channels in the Mixer now have a large number of alternate combinator modes (Complex XOR and Scale-Invariant Linear Modulation) FM3 oscillator’s M3 Frequency parameter is now extendable down to 0.5 Hz Fixed a bug where oscillator initialization ignored the octave setting, which caused a very small initial glide in String and Modern oscillator Added a “Vintage FM” feedback mode for Sine, FM2, and FM3 oscillator, which uses the average of last two samples to calculate feedback (like on the very first FM synthesizers) Doubled the delay buffer of comb filter (now it’s 4096 samples), allowing lower frequencies to sound proper at high sample rates This is a CMake option so self-builders can revert to how it was before, if Surge XT needs to run in a more memory constrained scenario Fixed a half-sample initial phase offset error in Modern oscillator when retriggering from zero Added an option to mute an entire scene via right-click context menu on Scene Volume parameter This is useful for sending scene A audio into B, but note that it also bypasses scene insert effects! Modulation Added various useful math functions (parity, signum, sign, rescale
) and a slew limiter to the Formula modulator prelude Added an alias for intphase state variable in the Formula modulator, cycle Removed Formula modulator subscriptions for timing and LFO state, they are now always available Removed Formula modulator subscription for voice parameters, they are now always available in voice LFOs and never available in scene LFOs Reverb 1 Size parameter can now be modulated without resetting the feedback network - sounds kinda odd but also fun! Tuning Added two new visualizations to Tuning Editor True Keys mode shows actual keys depressed and the interval between them in cents Radial mode is now renamed to Polar, containing Radial and Angular mode In MTS-ESP mode, the Tuning Editor will now also become a tuning analyzer, showing the new True Keys mode against MTS-ESP sources Removed the option “Use MTS-ESP if available”, it was redundant Added the capability to remember if Surge XT is disconnected as client from MTS-ESP Fixed misleading tuning-related typeins in ‘Apply Tuning After Modulation’ mode, now errors are presented accurately When “Use MIDI Channels 2 and 3 to Play Scenes Individually” is disabled, we can now use MIDI channels for octave shift tuning information coming from MTS-ESP Fixed a bug where sustain pedal did not work correctly in “Use MIDI Channel for Octave Shift” mode Accessibility Enter key on a step sequencer parameters starts the edit gesture, matching other accessible sliders Alert dialogs now properly receive keyboard focus for screenreader users Effect parameters now speak the name of the parameter group they belong, which is helpful in effects like Audio In or EQ, which have multiple similarly named parameters in different groups Shift+F10 closes open menus as well as opening them, which works around some DAWs (like Reaper) stealing Esc key in order to close the plugin window Removed an unused button from Keyboard Shortcuts Editor which confused some screenreaders UI/UX Added multiple virtual keyboard layouts (QWERTZ, AZERTY, Dvorak, etc.) to Keyboard Shortcut Editor Added an action to load a random patch (not bound to a key by default) Restricted wavetable loading dialog to .wav and .wt extensions only Mouse dragging in the Filter Analysis overlay now modify the Cutoff and Resonance parameters, and also send VST automation events Adjusted the width of typeins when they show an error Fixed a bug where buttons in the Oscilloscope overlay and a few other places used incorrect hover off color Fixed an error where MSEG Y position tooltips would not update or would show when not appropriate Fixed a problem with the use of bold fonts in menus which mis-render menu headers in some macOS situations Home and End keys no longer malfunction in the Comment field when saving patches Releasing mouse on horizontal slider no longer places cursor over adjacent slider Updated the look and feel of all alert and notification dialogs to match the skin used, as opposed to default JUCE visual style Oscillator display now uses the half rate filter to show the waveform, which shows a more accurate waveform in some cases When using the option “Add sub-menus for modulation menu items”, custom menu icons will not be shown now Plugin Implemented CLAP parameter menus Added initial implementation of CLAP remote control pages extension CLAP polyphonic modulation now also works per-channel and per-key, whereas previously it just worked per note Better defense against some filesystem errors which could cause the AU to fail loading in Logic Reenabled VST3 parameter menus in Reason, now that the underlying bug is fixed on Reason’s end. Thanks to the Reason team for their beta program access, which helped us find this bug! Surge XT Effects Standalone now works with mono in, stereo out Bluetooth configurations Changed startup path to improve portability Documents directory is not created anymore if not needed, improving portability Other Changes and Bug Fixes Allowed clients of Surge XT to reset extra content path (used by VCV Rack modules) Updated the Character filter to allow inclusion in VCV Rack as a standalone Fixed a bug where standalone would not properly use the tempo specified in the Virtual Keyboard section Swapping effects via drag and drop now participates in undo Swapping macro modulators via drag and drop now participates in undo “Continue from Current Level” Play Mode option now participates in undo and scene copy/paste Fixed several cases where the MSEG could generate or persist NaN values in the editor Updated the lifecycle of JUCE look and feel, avoiding a font-related crash in some rare cases Updated the handling of filesystem errors more robustly and improved error reporting at startup, avoiding a crash in some rare cases Loading skins from ZIP files now appropriately ignores the _MACOSX folder Code Refactoring and Quality A large number of effort went to moving code from Surge XT repository into libraries shared between Surge and Shortcircuit, including: Moving many effects to sst-effects library Moving fundamental operators to sst-basic-blocks library Each of these moves included code improvements of various forms With JUCE 7, removed the moribund per-type class extensions Added uniform file comments and header guards across the entire codebase Centralized our locale-based formatting using the libfmt locale Removed some uses of shared_ptr<T[]> which don’t work in the VCV Rack build environment Made sure we properly obey __restrict on gcc Consistently use uses_wavetable for all queries about wavetable usage Fixed an assumption about parameter layout in FXStorage Fixed a collection of typos across the code comments Refactored the modulator name API to be available to more code paths Infrastructure Upgraded to JUCE 7.0.5 (plus a couple of accesibility patches) Removed the LV2 from the binary distribution Fixed descriptions in Linux installers to indicate LV2 is not there anymore and include CLAP in the binary Tweaked our CI strategy to improve time from commit to nightly Include the mistakenly unincluded for gcc13 Surge XT builds on 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, but not 32-bit - fail the 32-bit Raspberry Pi build earlier Expanded documentation about polyphonic modulation, Raspberry Pi, and others Moved to catch version 3 Enabled CTest Improved unit test runtimes Moved minimum CMake version to 2.1 Moved macOS notarization from altool to notarytoool Consistently build for macOS 10.9 across all submodules Fixed compilation on macOS Clang 15 Added an API to end notes just based on note ID Added a test suite which compiles after surge-xt as opposed to after surge-common, which was needed for OSC unit tests Removed more inappropriate legacy SSE includes, allowing portability to more architectures via simde Content Updated 3 LinnStrument patches from Winds category Updated and added new John Valentine patches Updated and added new Kinsey Dulcet patches Added A.Liv patches Added Landosonic patches Added NES Triangle wavetable Added two new init patches to the factory templates, aimed at duophonic and paraphonic synthesis Added another Formula Tutorial, focusing on duophony Added a few Formula modulator presets

  7. So I got these about a week ago. Here's some feedback. Please keep in mind I'm known around these parts (and everywhere else) to dislike most things and not being afraid of publicly stating as much. Also keep in mind that, before reading up on how much effort Steven Slate has been and is putting into this, I basically regarded him as a cash grabbing fraud who puts out rushed, uninspiring products and focuses on marketing more than quality (boy, was I wrong. The guy and his entire team are putting their heart and soul into this.) Ready? I don't think you are. I've only done 4 and a half mixes with VSX so far, so obviously, I need a lot more time with the headphones and software, but I can already very confidently say this: this is, to me, the one magic thing that changes everything I've always been looking for. After just a week, it is already definitely, without the slightest doubt, BY FAR the best music related product I've ever purchased. Do keep in mind that I basically own every plugin under the moon, including ridiculously expensive "holy grail" ones (hi Ziad). Using just VSX with a few different rooms and speakers and regularly switching to reference tracks, I can suddenly hear everything clearly and in detail, I can hear what's wrong with a track or mix and know what to do because it is SCREAMING at me. I can suddenly, quite honestly almost magically, make EQ, compression and reverb/delay related choices with ease and confidence and it actually sounds right and translates to other devices afterwards. If you research this product, you will find almost exclusively overwhelmingly positive feedback (like >99%), and that is, for once, because it ACTUALLY IS just that good. I would pay almost any amount of money for this. I would trade all of my plugins for it and mix with stock effects if I had to. And my mixes would still be better than ever. $399 and especially $349 (see post above) is a R I D I C U L O U S bargain for this. If you do any mixing at all, do yourself a favour and buy it immediately, no matter how much doubt you have or how much you believe that "you can't mix on headphones". Because you really can. And you WILL.

  9. I have two. Already got rid of them. Or so I thought. It's the 5 grand kids that keep popping up each day now. The youngest (13 months) jumps for joy each time he bangs on the piano keyboard. He loves it! My room full of music gear here is his favorite place in the world right now. Got him drumming with drumsticks every time he comes into the room. Such a big smile on his face each time. Edit: So actually he's made more music than me in the last month that I have in years.

  10. https://plogue.com/products/chipsynth-c64.html Plogue has introduced chipsynth C64, a new virtual instrument for macOS & Windows, described as “The new reference for SID emulation”. Plogue says that chipsynth C64 is designed to be “the deepest SID sound chip emulation ever”, and the the new soft synth is informed by years of research. The MOS Technology 6581/8580 SID (Sound Interface Device) is the built-in programmable sound generator chip used in the Commodore 64 and other Commodore computers of the era. The SID contains 3 oscillators, each with a volume envelope, which can either be used as-is, or sent through the filter. SID music typically use one oscillator per sound. This allows for 3 notes of polyphony, but the single filter has to be shared between tracks, requiring the use of ad hoc manual allocation. chipsynth C64 is available now for $49.95 USD.

  16. We're re-doing Disk #2 now (Pop/Rock Fake Book companion). We compiled that one in the early 1990s, it's one of our bestsellers. There have been so many new styles released since then that express the songs better. So we decided to redo it. We've been working on that for about a year. It will be a free update to anyone who has ever purchased it. That just seems like the right way to go. It's how I would appreciate being treated if I was the customer. We won't use micro-chords on that one, because we don't know what version any of BiaB our customers who bought that disk has. Peter Gannon tells me that if the end user doesn't have a newer version of BiaB that supports micro-chords, only the first chord will be played, and that would ruin many of the songs. So we are still going with expanded styles. I do like the micro-chords, but until they are about 10 years old, I'll probably continue to use expanded styles, for back-compatibility. Back-compatibility is also the reason I assign MIDI styles to the fake disk songs. If a MIDI style is assigned, the BiaB 'robot' will suggest a real track style. On the other hand, if a real style is assigned, BiaB will not recommend a MIDI style. So to suggest both, MIDI must be default. Of course, the user can change the style. A few years ago, I did Fake Disk #37, The Real Book Companion with all Real-Track styles, and the feedback from my customers was to stick to MIDI for that very reason. When I made my own styles back in the 1990s, I gave them to a few friends who were using BiaB. They told me they liked my styles better than PG Music's styles (aren't friends wonderful?) and one said that I should sell them. I took out a classified ad in Keyboard Magazine for 3 months. As the 3rd month was approaching, the ad rep called me and asked if I wanted to renew. I hadn't sold any, so I said, “No, Thanks.” About an hour later, I got my first order, so I called the mag and renewed. I wonder if the magazine bought a disk to get me to renew? Anyway, I'm glad I got that order. I've sold to 100 different countries now. I walked into a music store in Bermuda, and another in London, and they both wanted to know if I was the “Real Bob 'Notes' Norton”. That and a couple of bucks will buy a cup of coffee, but it felt good anyway. I don't make much money per disk. By the time I pay the web host, shopping cart, credit card authorization company, credit card merchant's account, business bank account (per deposit), and insurance, there isn't much left over, but enough to keep me from travelling to find work in the slow, Florida summers. After the Pop/Rock redo, we're doing The Real Book volume VI. The last in that series. Mrs. Notes is planning on another Rock/Pop book. Right now it's prime gigging season, and we are doing from 3 to 6 one-nighters per week, so there isn't much progress on the software. Notes ♫

  19. WOW! I pull out Surge XT once in a while, but haven't done a sufficient deep dive to be able to use is as efficiently as I'd like. JMO: based on all those improvements it looks like a real testimony to the value of a vibrant and highly competent community. I don't think I have ever looked at Surge's use of formulas as modulators, but it has now piqued my curiosity. Thanks for mentioning the update and for including the changelog.

  21. "I'm really happy that InMusic has bought..." Only an influencer can say that line with a straight face. Note that he does a little dance around the presets being disappointing (he gives viewers a heads up that the presets aren't very good). InMusic has yet to significantly improve any software it has purchased and it has had a lot of time with AIR and BFD and it doesn't appear to have made any of them much better after purchasing them. I wouldn't be as blunt if this were a small player, but this is one of the largest players in the industry.

  23. Ableton today let us know that the Push 3 Upgrade Kit – an upgrade that lets you convert a Push 3 without a processor into a standalone instrument – is now available. https://www.ableton.com/en/push/upgrading-push/ With the standalone components installed, your Push will work exactly the same as a Push bought with a processor. It lets you step away from your computer, running Ableton Live as a hardware device. The Upgrade Kit contains the Push 3 standalone components: an Intel 11th Gen Coreℱ i3-1115G4 processor with 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD hard drive, lithium iron phosphate battery and heatsink. It also includes screws, a screwdriver, a backplate lifter, and a protective mat. The Intel NUC Compute Element combines a processor, RAM memory and WiFi. It’s the first Intel processor to be adapted for Push. The Upgrade Kit is available now for USD 1049.00.

  25. I started using BiaB when I had an Atari computer. PG Music comes out with a Christmas update every year. It's a good auto-accompaniment software app. I bought it, so I could practice my sax with a robot band. That way, I could try improv things that were risky without embarrassing myself (most of the risky things didn't work out). When PG wrote a stylemaker option allowing end users to make styles, I found a side business. Still doing it, and still loving BiaB. Notes ♫

  41. As rsinger said, you need to manually correct the "Beats in Clip" value in the Groove Clip section of Clip Properties tab in the Track Inspector. But this may not recover the "discarded" audio; you might need to start over and make sure the clip boundaries are precisely on measure boundaries before you enable Groove-Clip Looping.

  42. For me, small devs doing propitary players, it's another plugin to install, learn and maintain. I have a fair degree of confidence that NI will maintain KONTAKT 5 years from now, I don't have that confidence for a small dev, and I've told that to bunch of KONTAKT devs that have transitioned to making their own players. The other way I look at libraries, especially piano libraries, because I have a lot of them, is, does this really bring something to the table I don't already have? I'm not sure that these libraries do and the miniscule Lite version wouldn't seem to give me a realistic idea of the full library. The price is super appealing. The crackling isn't. How do you think this would fit in singer/ songwriter and folk rock productions? BTW, I only have Embertone Walker D Lite, but I love it (I like it so much I never felt the need to buy the full version). I have all of the XLN pianos and electric pianos, but to be completely candid, I find them significantly inferior to my favorite KONTAKT libraries and rarely use them.

  43. We need someone with the brutal honesty of Carl Ewing or jngnz to review this thing. Influencer faux reviews are useless. People getting free product, looking for more free product, sponsorship for their channel and direct cash are pitch people, not reviewers. That said, influencers are still incredibly important to developers in this industry, they do get people to buy stuff.

  44. Both Lifeson and Lee seem to be able to keep themselves occupied, but I think that being a musician is not something you can turn off. That being said, I think people's reaction isn't based on the fact that musicians keep on making music in their old age, but on the fact that they decide to do so using an established name. Of course, it's theirs to do what they want, but if the name is worth touring under, it's a name that probably means a lot to millions of people and it's bound to elicit a strong reaction. I think maybe Queen found the most elegant way to go about it with their Queen + Paul Rogers, and Queen featuring Adam Lambert. For my taste anyway.
