About Me

  1. I use the Playlist feature for live shows. Very often there is some interaction with the audience between tracks. Altough I'm able to define a delay between tracks, sometimes it is not enought because I can not predict how the audience will feedback (sometimes more, sometimes less). Is there a way to pause the sequence? Maybe pausing the delay time between tracks? Best regards....
  2. Just the effects, the others are needed for your on board audio. as Glen said if you never use your on board audio then no loss. I use both on my office computer and my 2 live performance laptops. My main DAW on board audio is nuked. If I turn off my interface the computer has no audio system. But I've never had any issues swapping back and forth on the laptops I use for gigs. I actually mostly have used on board audio from the 1/8" jack into the mixer for 100's of shows. I even have a Radial DI box for when I'm on a stage with a sound guy and a snake. In a way it's more bulletproof. But you don't have that option with your set up as you need more output channels. I use a Sound craft Signature 10 which has USB stereo connection but it's a PITA and often windows doesn't always see the ASIO driver. I have to turn the mixer off and on and it doesn't even have a friggn swicth so I have to unplug it! The driver seems to be from Karmen, It works fine when it works. But USB connections scare me as they are a little hyper sensitive to being wiggled. So I mostly use the Audio cable connected. It's more bulletproof. I now also have the use of a Behringer X18 which is multi channel and connected to Cakewalk with no issues. I might get brave and try the multi channel system like you using the Playlist. My set up I use split stereo. Bass on left and Drums and keyboards on the right. We are doing that because we now might play real bass on a few songs. And even when I do my solo act I really like running the bass track into my little Fender Rumble. More bass is always a good thing at a dance. But what sucks I the sound is mono. I really like using the full stereo versions in smaller venues as so much is lost from things like a Hammond Leslie organ in mono. The Playlist is clunky but, hey, they just might give it some love in the new releases.
  3. First is this the keyboard ?. https://ca.yamaha.com/en/products/musical_instruments/keyboards/portable_keyboards/psr-e373/index.html#product-tabs If you already have a midi drum track then Send the Midi drum track to the Keyboard and record the audio output of the keyboard to a stereo audio track in Cakewalk. If you are trying to record the keyboards sequenced drum track as audio then you can skip that step. But take note: You can also record the keyboards midi track as midi data and edit it and send it back. Normally we tell you to use audio cables, this is an option if you own a decent audio interface. But I see that this model is also a USB audio interface, It is only 44.1 /16 which is sort of weird for Yamaha. But make sure and download the Yamaha/Steinberg ASIO driver found at above link. Follow my tutorial on proper audio set up to get this working properly in Cakewalk. Then you will select that as the input to the audio track. Your keyboard is a powerful tool to use with Cakewalk but it can be a little more complicated to set up to take advantage of all the option. You will defiantly benefit from reading the owners manual a few times to explore it's features. On the Cakewalk side I have you covered if you watch my tutorials and take some time to read the PDF user guide. This is the audio set up video - https://youtu.be/opDwsC4_llg This is the entire playlist of tutorials. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGsURWrKGeu-fFyg3ETjF-Ox
  4. The whole episode as a playlist:
  5. Dont know if youre joking or not, lol, but Sirus XM has about 150 channels of music and talk radio commercial free. All randomly played. YouTube on the other hand has the entire album catalog of a lot of artists. You can play the albums straight through or make a playlist or play things randomly. It's a little bit more than XM monthly, or less depending on what deal you can get from XM, but it's well worth it especially if you listen to a lot of music.
  6. OT - does anyone have time to make a scrape script and compile a yt playlist of this wonderful thread?
  7. @Dave Gelzleichter My playlist was made to watch in order. Unlike most I start out teaching you how to find your way around Cakewalks interface. Each video has an end screen to take you to the next in sequence. He can skip the midi videos.

  9. Hi All, I would like to describe my use case, and ask if anyone can help if I can user Cakewalk in this manner. I have several backingtrack projects, all in Cakewalk, that are using mostly the same patches (VST). These projects are usually played live (through Dante Virtual Soundcard to an Allen&Heath SQ5 mixer equipped with a Dante card) in multichannel mode, so the mixing guy can mute the tracks, where the player is present, and also mix them live with more accuracy. My problem is, that changing between projects takes a considerable amount of time, not to mention the amount of RAM required to host the VST plugins for each project. I tried merging multiple projects into one, my problem here is, that dragging a new project in to the existing one will only paste select features at the cursor (it omits markers, tempo track), so it is a lot of work to reenter them, but doable. [feature requests: have Cakewalk insert everything into the project upon drag-and-drop] I am currently experimenting with VSTHost hosting all the VST files, then I play back only MIDI data with Cakewalk (since it has multiple MIDI devices support) through loopMIDI. My problem here is, that I have to stop, switch, start each project. [feature request: .cwp playlist] I am still fitting into 16 MIDI channels, if I use banks/programs, so I can use MPC-HC, VLC, even WMP to play MIDI files, with playlist(!), and except MIDI clock functionality, it works. I even can have Cakewalk act as a VST host only. My problem here is, that I have to configure Cakewalk each time I record or I use it live. I I would very much enjoy using the interface of Cakewalk, as upon recording I find very easy to set my mixing channel levels and leave the Dante sends untouched. [feature request: ability to change hardware profiles with one click or command line] So I would like to use only Cakewalk with the least amount of extra work upon planning the project setlist.
  10. When the Beatles arrived, I thought they were OK, but The musicianship did not impress me. I liked a lot of the songwriting, though, especially those concise B parts that took the listener out of the tonic key and back quickly. By the time “Help” came out, the musicianship got better, and when Rubber Soul came out, I was hooked. I agree with Revolution 9, put Rocky Raccoon and Why Don't We Do It In The Road in the ignore pile. I think the White Album could have been one good, single album by cutting half the songs. For me, the pinnacle was the Abbey Road medley. But like I said, I feel pretty similarly about all the artists/groups that I love. Even my all-time favorite tenor sax players, Stan Getz and Stanley Turrentine recorded more than a few dogs. Same for Shostakovitch and Tchaikovsky. I don't get into the “who is better” comparisons, because there is no definitive answer, but I do get into who do I like and dislike. Back OT, I still think “Now And Then” in my opinion only is “meh”. I enjoyed the new work for what it is, but it won't make it on my digital Walkman playlist. But that's just me and my personal tastes. Insights and incites by Notes ♫
  11. Hopefully you are using ASIO drivers supplied by Steinberg. This video explains exactly how to set your audio up in Cakewalk. If you use ASIO you shouldn’t have to adjust timing offset. Note that the visual drawings of the wave form will not be in sync as you perform. Don’t look at that. If you’re looking at anything look at the drum track and mostly use your ears to play in time. After you stop the recording Cakewalk adjust the drawing so yes it will appear to move to the exact spot you played it. This is my complete playlist of tutorials if you are new or just wanting to increase your knowledge of Cakewalk and it’s features. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGsURWrKGeu-fFyg3ETjF-Ox
  12. I have 2 laptops that are stuck in W7 due to age. I hate tossing out stuff that still works. And like others there’s also software, a CD printer and one audio interface stuck back there as well. I only use the one old Sony for music playback at gigs but I also put Cakewalk on it in an attempt to try using the playlist feature. I just updated to the latest and final version no problem. So Cakewalk still works on W7. Your best bet is to do the same so you’ll get more time. All older versions will time out real fast but the last version we are told will carry on until they decide we’ve had enough time to transition to Sonar.
  13. Initial Slice has been updated to version 1.2.0 not only introducing Pro Tools Aax plugin support but also including many many changes, bugfixes, features and new content. Read the full changelog below. The update can be downloaded at the updates tab in my account at initialaudio.com. The demo and full version installers have been updated to the latest verion as well. Changelog: Added AAX plugin support for Protools. Graphical improvements Added more tooltips. Playlist bar number starts from one instead of zero. Extended the length of the playlist. Added auto scrolling of the playlist. When in song mode the playlist is synced to the host playlist when running as a plugin. Pressing play in the host will trigger Slices play button and play back in sync with the host. Added an option to turn on or off looping the playlist. Play mode is saved in the host project file. When moving the playback indicator in the playlist the audio will start playing from the indicator position, instead of waiting for the start of a new block. Basic loop only presets (Not Beat Starters) can be dragged directly onto the sample display. There are two options: 1 Load only the loop without setting any parameters. This is useful if you want to try out different loops but keep everything else the same. Or 2 also load the bass sequence if one is available. This bass will be in key and to the scale of the loop. Added Swing to the drum sequencer. Added support for ASIO drivers on windows in the standalone app. Added support for bluetooth midi devices on windows in the standalone app. Dragging a slice outside of the plugin/App now has the BPM of the project instead of the original sample BPM. So the slice will sound the same outside Initial Slice as inside. Per slice loop and reverse now ignores the Play To End parameter and works as expected. Fixed bluetooth midi not working in standalone on Mac OS 11 Fixed an issue where bounce wouldn’t work if files of the same name already existed. Fixed the sample being out of sync when changing per slice pitch and the project BPM is different to sample BPM. Fixed an issue when changing BPM in the host the slices could start at the wrong position. Setting half time or double time didn’t fully take account of the host BPM. Fixed an issue with drum patterns, on occasion the very first sample might not play. Stability fixes. Added free Expansion Pack (Magic Desert) incl. 27 new melodic loops, drum kits and beatstarters. https://initialaudio.com/
  14. Hi, I'm wondering why I can't find an answer to my question about the error when I load a project from the playlist and the loop that I made between several measures before saving the project is disable. I have hoped that with the latest updates it would be fixed, but that does not happen and there is no response from the developers. At least I would like to know if they have considered correcting this error. Thanks.
  15. Not sure if you saw the videos I made last week about the L8. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGs-D7nsBl0iPsavrtpnrrsg Now I've done one gig with it I'm going to make a 3rd sort of as a overview and review. I first bought it as a mixer. You can see in the picture how I need everything to be very compact and fit on the little table. I have 2 small Mackie mixers one has no effects and the other the effects are terrible. So I have used a Voice Live pedal for vocal effects. That is a nightmare of connections as well as I've started having issues to complicated to list. One being if you look at the picture you will see my X keys USB footswitch on the floor. The Voice live was beside it and sometimes my pedalboard. Three times at a show I accidentally stepped on the X keys instead of the Voice live and my backing track would stop! It's a good thing that show was not a dance or a 300 person outdoor concert!! This is just another sign of old age because I had rarely had this happen before. So the Voice live has gotta go! And you can see I also put my pedal board out of harms way. I have other larger mixers and only my Yamaha 01V has effects I can use. I've played in many bands and used all sorts of different mixers, the effects are not what I like, ever. Thus the search for a small mixer with good effects. In all the YouTube reviews of the L8 they praised the effects so that got my attention. Got nothing to lose because of Amazon return policy so I ordered it. I was blown away that there was a pre set, Vocal 2, that was almost exactly what I like. I only had to tweak it a bit. Anyways the board was amazingly easy to set up and use at the gig. Then the bonus. I often record my performances to see how I'm doing and make improvements. For that I have to connect my Tascam DR 40 to the RCA tape outputs of my mixer. This gives me a "board mix". This is now built right in. The Zoom took 20 seconds to set it up and I recorded myself into 6 tracks. If you look in the picture you will see a camera on my lighting stand. It's a terrible angle but for what it's worth I could now dump the recording into Cakewalk, tweak the audio and produce a live video with killer sound. 48/32. That's right it records at 32 if you like. I also dumped 30 backing tracks on to a SD card I had on standby just in case my Laptop finally died> You can play these directly from the mixer. Originally I was not thinking of it as a serious Audio interface. But my Motu is now sitting up on the self next to the Scarlett. I will probably sell it and keep the Scarlett as at least the Scarlett was more dependable and has SPDIF. The Zoom doesn't have Midi so I need to keep an interface that does. As an interface it is a better workflow for me due to all the inputs and having complete control over my monitor and headphone mixes. I realized I could also connect 2 more Monitors pairs as well. No need to change the Master output to 3/4. Just turn a knob. I'm running my sub off Mix B. I can now run at a lower buffer setting as well. The ASIO driver is a good one. Zoom has come along way in that regards .
  16. It's been a lot of technology plus attitudinal shifts that correlated with that. Most households in the US do pay for a music streaming service. But people are largely no longer purchasing albums or singles. Record companies used to schmooze and bribe radio program directors and djs and now most of the focus goes on stuff like major Spotify Playlist curators. And there really isn't much hope there if you're not Drake, Travis Scott, Taylor Swift, etc. and I don't see anything changing that soon. I think that's really too bad. Although again, rock is resurging at the moment. But I don't see how the next Radiohead or Jeff Buckley could make it in the current age. It doesn't work for artists with very limited appeal / plays.
  17. Working in the Playlist, when a selected song is playing and ends clicking next Start Next Song brings up the song with all the windows displayed correctly. The issue happens when during the currently playing song, I go and double click a different song in the list (not the one below the currently playing song). In this scenario, when the song ends and I click on Start Next Song, ONLY the track view is displayed. From the attached screenshot you can see the other windows minimized at the bottom of the screen as well as the next song loaded. This issue happened after installing the latest update this week. I have tried unchecking the Discard Project Changes and Pre Load Next Song in the File drop down box, but this did not solve the issue. This issue is a deal breaker for my live performances so your prompt attention to this is much appreciated.
  18. Ok, I see you actually use your outputs for hardware. No problem, just open a music player app and drag and drop the file to the playlist and it will play ( using the MS GM synth ? ) I just tested this on W10 22H2. Both Win Amp and Windows Media player play the file. I notice that Cakewalk no longer has the MS GM synth as an option so it would seem that this utility has been removed only from Cakewalk and not other apps yet. Other DAW's have built in GM players like Cubase uses the Halion synth. If you really want to use Cakewalk you would have to OPEN the midi file from the Menu or the desktop. If you have the outputs selected you will get all the midi tracks but no TTS'1. The midi tracks will be assigned to the output that was the top of the list. This is the default and why you have to de select the midi devices listed to trigger the insertion of the TTS-1. This can work if that device can play GM files. I have a Sound Canvas and a Korg 05/rw as example which are both GM. Then if you add the TTS-1 to the project you now have to change each tracks output. So it's much faster to simply uncheck the outputs first. This is Win Amp playing a midi file I just downloaded. It was how I previewed midi files a long time ago until I discovered the TTS-1 trick.
  19. Those are Midi Cables. Midi is not audio it is only data. Watch these tutorials. https://youtu.be/Tce02wE_TPM https://youtu.be/YJlI6U8Rqa0 This is the playlist for all the Cakewalk Tutorials https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGsURWrKGeu-fFyg3ETjF-Ox
  20. Thanks to everyone in development team for the continued feature additions and progress with Cakewalk. The Playlist however has been sorely neglected IMHO. There are reported issues that have been ignored for many years. It was great to see the 150+ bug fixes in the last release, but very disappointing to once again find the Playlist not on the list of items getting attention. Here is the Oldest "Bug" I know of AGAIN! With Playlist "Enabled": Begin playback of a Set List of at least 4 projects. During playback "Mute" and "Unmute" any track. The purpose here is to create one of many scenarios that could cause the (*) asterisk to appear after the project title. This of course indicates that the project has been edited in some way. After the project has completed playing and the "Next" project is under way: Select the "Window" drop down menu. You will now see the the 1st project is still open. This behavior will continue until many projects are left open and the computer runs out of resources and CRASHES! Projects should close after playing regardless of changes to the project without saving any changes to the project. The last time that I know of ( this is a long time ago-memory?) that this behavior did not exist is Sonar 1. The playlist was then removed in Sonar 2 and inserted again with Sonar 3 and the bug described. IN the current release 2019.07 this behavior persists as well as: Lyrics window placed on extended screen does not display as "Full Screen" when Playlist is "Enabled" These behaviors leave me only able to use the Playlist as a way to "select projects" and to load and play one at a time. Better than searching directories for projects for sure but not the way the Playlist used to function. I have been a user since the DOS versions and Cakewalk Live were all the rage. and worked well I might add. Cakewalk has been my choice forever because it was and remains the only DAW with the Playlist feature that IMHO is (when working properly) is the best concept for this feature for the "live' preforming musician. Sorry to say that I know many "live" performers who have abandoned Cakewalk because of the endless problems with thsi feature and the complete lack of attention to the issues. I have reported these problems by forum, by phone, chat, demonstrated them with remote desktop sessions and still nothing has been corrected. On a personal level, I started with Cakewalk in my late 30's. At age 67, I am still using it exclusively. I would really appreciate a version with the Playlist behaving correctly before I am either too old to perform or no longer drawing breath! Can anyone there please give this some attention! A great product needs to be better than the Playlist feature is at this point! I am here and willing to help in any way that serves this goal. Best to All on the Programming Team, Sincerely, Roger Cousins
  21. Use the Playlist feature. It will load as many project one at a time as you like. You start a playlist from the File Menu choose New and this dialogue will open. You see it is the second on the list. Open and add your projects to the list and save it. It was designed for live performance but can also be used to pre view a collection of projects for say an album. Just don't move the projects.

Good song, very upbeat and well produced. This song would fit nicely on my 70's Playlist, which is also my favorite playlist:) Might boost the horns a bit, you might add a bit of chamber or room verb with a little compression to the horn parts. That would sound good. Stellar production. Regards
  23. For other who might find this thread in the future. There’s some misleading comments I feel need clearing up. First the title would imply that the update is faulty. If this was true then thousands of people would be here complaining. It’s theoretically the ultimate best version of Cakewalk ever. The only reason why an update might cause minor issues with some users is that something was never properly set up to begin with. So it reset to a default. The normal default is what you will see if you open a Basic or other Cakewalk template. The tracks are assigned to the Master bus. The master bus is assigned to 1/2 outputs of your interface or It will be Speakers if you are using Computer audio. Simple. This is the first thing you check if there’s no sound. The OP said no sound from midi tracks. Of course, midi doesn’t make sound. It is possible they were using the MS GM synth. They didn’t say there was sound from audio which is important. Midi doesn’t make sound on its own it needs an audio/instrument track to do that. That’s why I pointed to the videos because there can be infinite amount of things not set up properly and the videos take you step by step to achieve the correct set up to work smoothly in Cakewalk. The OP’s workaround possible solved the problem because apparently the MS GM synth is now unsupported. So to other new users starting out, take the time to watch the videos from the beginning to the end and as I said you might have to do this a few times before you get it. You will save yourself a lot of waisted time trying to sort things out on your own Cakewalk is complicated. This is the playlist that is best to watch in this order. Watch for end screen link to view in order.
  24. The midi driver is installed with the driver for your audio interface. Make sure to check it as an input in Preferences. If you are just starting out you might want to watch my tutorial series to help you get going. The one about connection midi keyboards is down the playlist a bit. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7YqVth30eGt7K5L5fUIUF_UjCsdAVCbd
