About Me

  1. Works for Psyn II but not RXP. This works for RXP Groove Browser & Pentagon I DX: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\rgc:audio Software\Dxi\Pentagon I In other news... Pentagon I VST = "Cakewalk Sonar has stopped working" (crash) If a plugin supports it, the setting will be listed under the new top bar icon. Turning it OFF in Preferences to display some plugins won't help those that need it.
  2. Hi dear all, in "good old times" Cakewalk (not yet by Bandlab) used to have a fine softsynth called "Pentagon", which could create a lot of nice timbres which I had to search for endlessly with more recent synths. What I am up to, there's a (historic) description of that thing: https://www.kvraudio.com/product/pentagon_i_by_cakewalk Does anyone know: Is that still somewhere available after the Cakewalk (by Gibson) store had been closed? Or any recommendation which could replace that thing? Thankx. Not that I would want to say the times of Cakewalk @ Bandlab were bad ones - ! 😉
  3. I'm in the process of re organizing my Plugins and I came upon one called Pentagon I. It doesn't work. It says it may not be installed properly. I've never used it so it doesn't matter much and it's not in the menu where I would move it from. Should I just delete it? Is it a relic from the past that is obsolute? Thanks 🙂John B
  4. Hi all, I need this synth for my song but it's crashing Cakewalk every time I start up, even when I start as admin. The error is crash code: c0000005
  5. Thanks for the memory jog. Now you've got me reminiscing about all the neat synths René brought to the table: Pentagon, Triangle, Square and the Soundfont player. Pentagon and Triangle were great for beginners trying to wrap their heads around subtractive synth programming, because they had all the essential features while still keeping it simple. I just had a look at my plugin inventory, and to my surprise, I still have some of those installed! Check it out...all those knobs! And text I'd need a magnifier to read...
  6. I'm curious if it is possible to get the the Pentagon I in Cakewalk by Bandlab? I have the Square 1 in Sonar 7 Home Studio and have heard that it is like Pentagon I, but I don't know if it can be used as a vocoder like the Pentagon I. I've also read that you can go to the original site and download Sonar 3 which has it, but can't log in to the original site for some reason. Is there an easy way to get this synth? Thanks.
  7. I don't think we can say for sure that the access violation is being raised by Pentagon. Could as easily be bitbridge or an effect. Unfortunately, I no longer have a copy of it here so can't test it for you. However, as old as Pentagon is you aren't the only one in the world using it, and are one of thousands who have used it over the years. Alex, try opening the project in safe mode (hold the SHIFT key down while the project loads) and when prompted whether to load Pentagon, answer "No". If the project then opens OK, try re-inserting the instrument. There's a decent chance that'll resolve the problem. If it doesn't, then congratulations! You've found a true unicorn: a new bug in a very old product. (You could also determine whether it's Pentagon raising the error by looking at the crash dump. Here's a very old thread where I posted the tldr; version of how to use Windbg to view crash dumps. ) Worst-case scenario is that Pentagon no longer works in Cakewalk. Unlikely, but not impossible. In that case, we can suggest plenty of comparable free or cheap synths to replace it with.
  8. The only rgc:audio Pentagon that I have installed in my system is the DXi version, located at: "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared DXi\Pentagon I\P1DXi.dll". It's version 1.4, copyright 2003. And Pentagon is working here, with the exception of certain"Simulator" settings available in the UI. I don't recall having to jump through any hoops to get it installed, it just came along for the ride when I installed Sonar. I mostly stopped using Pentagon years ago. I can understand the need if you have old projects that call for this one, but there are better synth options out there today. For a decent paid, not free, virtual subtractive analog synth with basic one page controls I would recommend eitherTone2 Saurus 3 or Waves Element 2. Saurus 3 can be had for $69, and Element 2 is currently on sale for $29.
  9. Depends on how much value the 16-year-old project represents. There is no reason to wrap Dimension for future use as it was eclipsed by the 64bit Dimension Pro VST2 plug-in you also have licensed. All you need P5 for is the plug-in. To load the project requires a 32bit version of SONAR or some other program that can read a SONAR projects and load 32bit DX plug-ins. PSYNII and Pentagon I were shipped as both 32 and 64bit DX plug-ins. AFAIK, Dimension was never sold separately. In fact, there were quite a few plug-ins bundled exclusively with P5 that were never ported to 64bit DX or VST format.
  10. Seems not worth it to pursue. I do have P5. I could install and then wrap "Dimension" with dxishell, which I've had pretty good luck with converting other dxi's to VSTs. But it wouldn't recognize the wrapped dxi as the dxi that was used in my 16 year old project, so I still wouldn't know the preset that was used (or the settings). If I knew those, I'd just load them in Dimension Pro. ("Dimension" doesn't happen to be one of the few dxi's that work in 64-bit Cakewalk by Bandlab (such as PSYN II and Pentagon), does it?) As I said above, I do wish there was a way to get Cakewalk to cough up the info on presets and modified settings used for each plugin in a project. The info has to be there or it wouldn't know what to do when you load any project. Would be very useful with many plugins such as Native Instruments, Wusik, etc., that get new "identities" when they are upgraded. Would save me from having to have, for example, seven versions of Kontakt loaded (the same project with "Dimension (NOT Pro)" also uses Kontakt 3, which was a little tricky to authorize since it expects NI's Service Center, not Native Access, to authorize it). I've wised up recently and, unless I forget, I add the preset name to the Track notes so I know exactly what's what when opening in future installations.
  11. Hi Everyone, I installed Pentagon I (only) from my X3 installation, but it doesn't show up in either Cakewalk or SPLAT (x64). I've done a net search and found threads on the Registry hack (giving permission to users for Pentagon I), but haven't had any success. Also installed Project 5 v2 and can use Pentagon from there, but can't rewire P5 into CbB or SPLAT (due to the 64bit limitation, IIRC). Only thing is I can't figure out how to use Pentagon I as a vocoder in P5. I read that some users have been able to use Pentagon I in SPLAT. Does anyone know of a way to get Pentagon I to show up and work in CbB or SPLAT beyond the registry hack? Any suggestion or solution would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, tecknot
  12. CA-2 is still pretty good, as were the Linear Phase plugins and Adaptive Limiter. The original Z3TA+ was pretty groundbreaking. Triangle II has an ob9 patch that I prefer to a number of current Oberheim emulations. I'd love to see them make a few tweaks to Pentagon to make it a little more stable and take standard wav files. Rapture is still a fairly powerful synth, and while Dimension doesn't have the power of Kontakt, it has a pretty solid library. While I will be the first to say they made some really dumb missteps with Rapture Pro (especially releasing a 32 bit version when a not insignificant portion of the content would not load in memory), if you take it as a version of Sound Center instead of the next iteration of Rapture, it actually is a mostly worthwhile product. And obviously nobody has asked for Guitar Rig LE because the version of TH3 is much better. I have fond memories of these because I had a tighter budget when starting and plugins were much more expensive in the early days. If I had to spend a month with only plugins included with versions of Cakewalk I purchased I could do alright.
  13. I've had pretty good luck with Pentagon myself, despite its age, but there's a lot of other great free modern synths that can take its place, like SURGE. EDIT: If you still want to open your project without it crashing, you'll need to remove Pentagon when it opens up in Safe Mode. Hold down shift when you open up the project and say NO to loading Pentagon. That'll let you get in there and swap it out for something else.
  14. SVSX

    FR: Repack.

Pentagon and Square are from RGC Audio and i think the original programmer isn't with Cakewalk anymore. Besides that, is Pentagon an old DXi plugin which is dead nowadays. If at all either Rapture, Zeta2 (actually that one is from RGC Audio too) or something completely new whould be the better option.
  15. Recently I tried to create a track with Pentagon I in CWBL. It gave me some odd message saying something like it was not installed properly. I pulled out my X3 installer and reinstalled that plugin but ended up with the same message. Of course, it works fine in Sonar Platinum. Any Idea why it works fine there but not in Cakewalk by Bandlab?
  16. Groove synth, Z3ta1, Dimension, Cakewalk Rapture, RgcAudio Pentagon are not free. The downloads are still available from a legacy Cakewalk Sonar account, but for registered legacy users only. They would need to have been registered to your account prior to November 2017. In other words, it's too late to create a new account, but if you had an old account, BandLab support can assist with resetting the password. http://www.cakewalk.com/Gibson-Announcement http://www.cakewalk.com/announcement TTS-1 is among the plugins that BandLab has bundled for free with CbB. The other legacy Sonar plugins that you mentioned have never been re-released since BandLab acquired Cakewalk's software. There is nothing wrong with them (other than age), but it has been BandLab's decision as the new owner not to distribute them.
  17. I have a more general question, Groove synth, Z3ta1, TTS-1, Dimension, Cakewalk Rapture, RgcAudio Pentagon, are they free ? where can I download them?
  18. Hi, All of my Cakewalk plug-ins (SI-Bass Guitar, Drum Kit, Electric Piano, String Section, Pentagon etc. etc.) have failed to load. Is there a way to download them again without having to delete and re-load BL Cakewalk? The problem started when I un-installed an earlier version of Cakewalk Sonar (X3). Thanks,
  19. I don't have the VST to test. It is a 32bit plug-in. If it has any registry entries that need modification, they would be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node look for an "rgc:audio software" folder. Then it is not trying to write to a protected area of the registry. When Pentagon was released, users had full control over HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\rgc:audio software\DXi\Pentagon I. The permissions for this area of the registry changed with Vista requiring the user to run the DAW as administrator or modify the registry.
  20. I had and still have exactly the same problem with Pentagon I modified the Registry settings as shown above but it will still never open properly I do have some older projects that use several Pentagon patches which I've mothballed in the vain hope there might be a solution someday
  21. I just loaded Pentagon in Cakewalk for the first time in a very long time. Good news is that it did not crash Cakewalk when I saved it in a new project, and then reopened it. But the bad news is that I remembered why I had stopped using Pentagon, even though it can make some great analog sounds.... The optional "Simulator" section is used by some presets, and that can cause the Cakewalk audio engine to freeze/lock up. Some sort of audio feedback loop? I remember scook discussing this a long time ago. At one point I considered going through all presets and saving them all with "Simulator" switched to "off". But there are like 6 banks of 128 presets each to sift through!!!
  22. That's an oldie!!! Have you searched the forum for "Pentagon?" I can't imagine the issue hasn't been brought up before. https://discuss.cakewalk.com/index.php?/search/&q=Pentagon&quick=1
  23. Pentagon is great for nostalgia, but come on, there are countless very cheap or free soft synths out there today that are currently maintained and supported that blow away 20 year old abandonware soft synths...
  24. There are a few cases where this can help (eg. Pentagon I, old Cakewalk plugin, either needs registry permissions tweaked or CbB to be run as admin) but precious few. Applications should (for the past >10 years) be written to *not* need administrator privileges, so may actually work worse when run like this (not crash, but behave unexpectely - drag and drop, default folder access and so on). And it would make debugging more confusing as most people wouldn't (shouldn't!) be running as admin. Use admin via UAC when you absolutely need to, not as a matter of course.
  25. If Pentagon is visible to CbB there is no need to mess with regsvr32. The plug-in is registered. This happens with all bundled DX plug-ins at install time. The typical problem with Pentagon occurs when trying to add it to a project The fix is to give Users "Full Control" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\rgc:audio Software\Dxi\Pentagon I as shown in image above There is no need to mess with anything else. Alternately running CbB as administrator works too but changing the one entry in the registry is all that is really needed. The last regsvr32 error seems to indicate the command may have been issued with no quotes around a path containing spaces. Like regsvr32 /u c:\program files\somepath\somefile.dll instead of regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\somepath\somefile.dll" Command line tools use spaces to parse input. To minimize these types of errors, I like to use regsvr32 in the folder containing the dll. But again. the usual solution to getting Pentagon working has nothing to do with regsvr32. That part is done properly at install time unless one receives the DLL/OCX error during install mentioned in the thread below.
