Why Is Apple's USB-C Cable $130?

Sinserially, if any manufacturer tried to sell me a USB cable for 130 I would consider it a scammer, why doesn't the same happen if that "salesman" has an apple in their logo?

I've read that it has to support Thunderbolt. Even a really good normal C cable doesn't support that. But $130? I dunno. Amazon has a ton of Thunderbolt capable cables starting around 25 bucks.

Unsurprisingly, you also managed to completely ignore the part of my reply where I stated not once but twice that I was not attempting to justify the price, and that this is something 99% of the people do not need, and that I myself would never buy one.

It's like talking to the mirror image of people who buy Macs because they're shinny.

The funny thing is that I have both a PC and a Mac sitting a few inches from each other on my desk right now, and there is no religious war or tear in the fabric of the universe. Both machines are doing precisely what I expect of them.

I'm not sure why this crusade goes on. Not saying that there aren't dumb Mac owners out there, but dumb people are dumb on any platform. None of the Mac owners I know have the least interest in debating platforms or putting Windows down, and, even though historically it definitely was not the case, for well over a decade and a half, most seem to acknowledge that Windows PCs are absolutely fine. Most of us buy a computer and move on, and we really don't care to keep thinking about that machine and agonizing over specs and performance. What's important is what it does and that it suits our workflow. 

For all the talk about people buying Macs just because they are shiny (and I know that this is usually said with humour), PC owners are often way more inclined to be obsessed with their machine and how amazing it is.

And if anyone is looking for shiny, Mac really is not the platform for you. In terms of being obsessed with looks, there's no competition. Some people visibly are not done celebrating the end of those dreadful beige towers. 

 

 

My Mac is rather unostentatious compared to these.

But then again, I'm not into RPGs and LARPing, and I'm not a virgin.

I watched a Linus video about excessive fans in cases.  You really don't need them.  I have 2 not butt ugly gaming cases.  More holes means more noise.  It's noticeable in an 8x10 room with ceramic tile.

 The problem with the Apple vs. PC debate is Windows is software while Apple is hardware.  Shouldn't that debate be about Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, AsRock vs. Apple which I do believe uses Foxconn boards.

 With Apple products no way would I go to their bottom floor. I couldn't do a 13inch Macbook.  You really need to go to a higher tier of Apple. To me it's like buying a PRS and using a 10watt SS amp just to have the name.

i was going to suggest that it's because PCs are infinitely customisable, both hw and sw with so many unique variations, then scrolled down a bit and you'd kind of made my point with the pics, but i haven't read the rest of the thread haha

I've told this story before in another PC vs. Mac battle.

Here's the short version ...

I worked at a place that forced us to learn how to connect multi function copier/printer/scanners to Mac. They said it was infinitely easier than PC and wanted to get rid of their only highly overpaid Mac specialist and have all the techs do it along with the PC connections we were already doing.

12 of us drove 2 hours to the office they set the training up at. Our IT/Mac guru couldn't get a single thing connected to a Mac. After an excruciating 8 hour day, he passed out a handbook and said follow this, thanks for coming.

I get your point and I guess it's a matter of determining one needs. I've actually squeezed a lot out of my old 13" MacBook Pro and Logic 9 for the few years we were travelling. And then hooked a monitor to it and used it for another year after we moved here. That 2010 laptop still works just as well as the day I took it out of the box, and I still use it to record ideas when I hang out downstairs in the living room.

It was replaced by a 23" iMac which itself has just been replaced by a 27" iMac. 

There are Macs and PCs out there with dozens of times the processing power, but to be honest, maybe I'm an idiot but I really don't need it. If I were working on movie scores with hundreds of tracks, I could definitely see the need. But for what I do, and my own weird kind of music, I never really ran out of power. If a project grows to over 30 or 40 tracks, I feel it's getting out of hand - the problem is not the computer but my old brain that doesn't have the ability to keep up with that kind of track count.

When the time came to replace the old iMac last summer, I debated the idea of moving back to PC quite seriously, because, financially, it made a lot more sense. And Apple really didn't make things easier because in order to meet my requirements, the options they had were extraordinarily limited.

Having been through the process of switching platforms once before definitely contributed to hold me back. And even though I spend 40 hours a week on a Windows PC, I still prefer and feel more comfortable on Mac OS. I would dare say it works better, because the term better is entirely subjective, so that's obviously my take.

And then there's Logic, the software that works the best for me. Although I've kept up with Cubase and really like Studio One, I couldn't imagine not having Logic at the center of my musical life. That software is like an extension of my brain.

So I bit the bullet and got an iMac. And not one of the more recent ones because those didn't meet my requirements - they now come with smaller internal HD (which is completely stupid), fewer ports that aren't compatible with my "legacy" hardware. So let it be said that I have my own share of dislikes when it comes to Apple and their strategies and decisions.

But the one I settled for works perfectly, and in terms of processing power, it has more than enough for my needs - which are admittedly quite modest compared to most people around here. 

If I had similar requirements to you guys, of course it would be a no-brainer. There's no way I would fork out the kind of dough that Apple demands for a Mac Pro. I'm just glad I don't need it.

The trick is many large (ie 120mm) fans with speed controls (something like iCue works well). The larger the fan the quieter it is - in general. You can also seek out fans with quieter specs. With many fans you can dial down the speed of them all and get quieter for the same cooling as running fewer fans at full speed.

I've always built my own machines and proper airflow with a reasonable noise level is always one of my priorities - especially when water-cooling an overclocked processor and running a 4090 in the same box.

You may only need to watch the first section on just the Apple Cable itself to get the gist .

For a reference point my Ibanez Midi Guitar when new in 87  cost hundreds more than a current 13 inch Mackbook Pro and it uses a 24 pin cable with cable ends one can not find or buy any more .... The cable connecting the guitar to the rack mount interface broke in 2005 . I wound up ordering a 25 pin cable designed for something else electronically .I had to map out the connections on both cable ends and commenced  soldering  one connection at a time over the course of 3 days ....all 48 of them

IIRC I may of had to even wire each end up as the mirror image of the opposite  connector ...Either way ....It works fine now ...

Had I not done this mod my guitar would have been useless as a midi guitar & It probably would have been just fine as a canoe paddle  ...

Most of the time when I have seen this 24 pin  midi guitar for sale , the seller does not have the cable..... I can get more for the cable itself 😉

How the heck Apple came up with that cable featured in the video .... I don't know ...

They must have had Superman working over time with his X Ray vision and a Scientific Grade Microscope working that soldering gun ....

So Respect for the Cable ....as far as the Apple company goes ...I don't have a dog in this fight ...

The biggest wins for me with quietening my PC were a silent (fanless) PSU and changing spinning rust for solid state disks (the disks vibrated the case, even with more grommets than you could shake a stick at).  With a fanless GPU, a "silent" case fan and a quiet CPU fan and all solid state disks, I can't hear the PC at all now - even though it's right under mu desk.  Of course, picking a low TDP CPU (65W) which meets my needs helps too as I have less heat to disperse at any given time anyway.
