About Me

  1. Introduction The 2021.12 release introduces support for nested track folders, localization updates, various enhancements and optimizations, and over 50 bug fixes, all in keeping with our goal of making Cakewalk as reliable and enjoyable as possible. Please note that in order to automatically keep your activation status up to date, Cakewalk will renew your activation status whenever a new version of the application is installed and run for the first time, and when you sign in to BandLab from within Cakewalk. If you have never signed in to BandLab from within Cakewalk, you will be prompted once to sign in. The following highlights are intended to provide an overview of the more significant changes. Please also refer to the new features section of our documentation for more detailed information on the features. Please give us feedback on this release. We hope you like it! 2021.12 Highlights Support for nested track folders To improve track organization, Cakewalk now supports nested track folders. A nested folder is a subfolder that is contained within another parent folder. Nested subfolders allow you to organize tracks more logically. For example, you can have a "Guitar" parent folder that contains "Electric" and "Acoustic" subfolders. To only move tracks into another folder, drag one of the tracks or select Move To... from the context menu of one of the tracks. To move the entire folder, drag the folder itself onto another folder, or select Move To... from the context menu of the folder. If a track is in a folder, selecting Move To Folder >New Track Folder will create a new sub-folder at the same level of that track. Note: As with the top level folders, any empty folders (i.e. specifically, folders containing no tracks) will ALWAYS appear below those containing tracks. Tip: When changing the color of a track folder, hold down the CTRL key to apply the same color to all child tracks within the folder. New behavior when dragging tracks/folders Dragging a track to the left side moves it out of the folder. Dragging to the right side moves it to the bottom of the existing folder at the target location (i.e. same level as the track above). Tip: While dragging, look at the left edge of the drop indicator - it will be exactly at the folder depth the track will be placed at. Expand/collapse track folder modifiers SHIFT+click on folder +/- to expand/collapse entire folder hierarchy of the folder you clicked on. CTRL+SHIFT+click on folder +/- to expand/collapse all folders in project. This is convenient if you want to quickly expand the hierarchy to search for a track, but then want to collapse it all. A note about nested track folders and track templates: The Save as Track Template context menu is only available on tracks, not on folders. If you want to save a track template with subfolders, you must right-click on one of the tracks within the subfolder. A track template cannot contain empty folders. Localization update The French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese and Russian versions of Cakewalk have been updated. Misc. enhancements Upgrade to VST3 SDK 3.7.3 Upgrade to ELASTIQUE SDK 3.3.9 (contains fixes for ELASTIQUE stretching) Upgrade to latest ARA 2.0 SDK Behavior changes In order to accommodate screen readers, the TAB key is no longer bound to "Tab to transients" by default. You can re-enable this function again in Edit > Preferences > Customization - Keyboard Shortcuts; bind the TAB key to AudioSnap Go To Next Transient Marker and bind SHIFT+TAB to AudioSnap Go To Previous Transient Marker. The Archive button is now a tri-state button in order to indicate if a track folder contains a mixture of archived and unarchived tracks. Note: If you use a custom user theme, you must update the Archive button in Theme Editor (found under Tack View > Track Pane > Archive) in order for the Archive button to display correctly. In the meantime, switch to the factory Tungsten or Mercury theme. The previous Archive button image has 5 states and is 122 pixels wide. The new Archive button has 8 states and is 176 pixels wide. The button states are the same as the Mute Tri-State button (from left to right): Normal | Normal Down | Normal Hover | Selected | Selected Down | Selected Hover | Disabled | Tri-state. 2. If you are running an older version and like the app it is worth considering the Pro upgrade. The VST plugin (I think this was added in 2019?) is an interesting feature that let's you generate tracks from inside a DAW with less hassle of using BIAB stand-alone. I picked BIAB up in 2020 but didn't really take to it; however, it definitely has a lot of merit, especially to someone new. It actually has a lot of features you wouldn't even think about until you come across them (like recording your own chords to use in song templates and such). @Notes_Norton has done a lot in that area, so he could speak to that far better. Even the music games it has would be very beneficial to a aspiring musician.

  4. Is cakewalk at namm this year? Don't see them listed.
  5. Ha! So it sounds like you're an IP attorney. Is that right? Not challenging your knowledge, this copy from an IP attorney firm does a better job of making the point IP lawyers have always explained to me: "A federal trademark registration means that you carry the legal presumption of ownership of the mark and possess the right to use it " That is, it is not the USPTO guaranteeing that you're the rightful owner to that trademark, it just gives a date when a claim was made and live, conflicting trademarks were not found in the database at that time. My understanding, and I do recall having dealt with another company claiming common law rights to a registered trademark a company I was with used. To make this a bit more relevant to this, if a USPTO trademark search finds no live claims on a trademarked name (not a logo), but someone registers it but doesn't use it in commerce, their trademark claim doesn't necessarily trump a company that was using it unregistered in commerce for 30 years during the period of registration. For example, Gibson let the Wurly trademark lapse, but a small opportunistic developer registered it for use by his business. If Gibson still has been marketing a product using the Wurly name, my understanding is that the small developer with the federally registered trademark still may likely not have a case for infringement against them. Is that correct or incorrect? So the withdrawals to opposition from GIbson you referred to in 2019, does that pertain to using the Wurlitzer trademark for musical instruments? And is the owner of that trademark the same party that has the website referenced in my original post?
  6. The Registration Certificate sitting at the other end of the first link in my first post is a government-issued *TRADEMARK*, full-stop, not just a self-asserted right to one. The German company is the rightful holder of that mark. This was a "Section 66(a)" application, which means that the registrant had already obtained an "international registration" via the International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization ("WIPO") in Geneva. Gibson's counsel filed the withdrawals of opposition that I referred (and linked) to, above, in 2019.
  7. The tools have been completely rewritten. All have font support, light and dark styles. Upsample Editor now supports in table edits. VST Inventory has selectable columns. Old Launchpad users make sure to copy "CbB Tools.exe" into the old Launchpad folder. Others may copy the "CbB Tools.exe" where ever they like such as "C:\Program Files\CbB Tools" I will leave the old versions available as the new ones no longer support 32bit SONAR. I added font size selection to a few of my CbB/SONAR utilities. There are updated versions of Launchpad - an alternative to the start screen Plug-in Upsample Editor - a tool to manage upsample data in Aud.ini Tools Editor - a program to manage the tools section of the Utility menu available here along with a few other CbB/SONAR related things. The utilities are about half way down the page. As always, if there are questions or issues with anything on the page just let me know. For best performance, whitelist the "CbB Tools.exe" process in your antivirus software. Inventory Tool really benefits from whitelisting. 9. We've been hard at work this year putting the finishing touches on some of the plug-ins we've been working on. Fresh on the heels of the release of the Maselec MEA-2, we have two more little surprises for you today... First, after many years of development, we are thrilled to finally announce the QuantX Natural Resonance Reverb. https://relabdevelopment.com/quantx/ QuantX stands as the world's only dual-engine re-creation of a beloved 80’s hardware reverb, celebrated for its exceptionally realistic ambience and extended reverb times. This legendary resonance reverb, a long-adored staple in world-class studios, has been meticulously re-created using our next-generation machine learning and extensive research. Some of the stand-out features include: Unique Dual-Engine Design – Both the Reverb and Enhancement engines run in parallel for some great front-to-back layering. Expanded Bandwidth – We recalculated the behavior of the internal sample rate and analog filters, to give you a highly unique and resonant frequency curve for multiple bandwidth options. 8-Voice Hand-Tuned "ACE" Modulation – We've included not one but TWO 8-voice modulation engines running in series, woven deep into the algorithm for incredibly rich and lush tails. Enhancement Feedback Controls – Where the tail of the enhancement is hard-coded in the original hardware, we’ve opened that up so you can really fine-tune your reverb. And much more... We're confident that once you try QuantX, you’ll instantly feel the essence of this classic room simulator and hear what makes this uniquely natural and realistic reverb so compelling. And if that's not enough, here's our second surprise for you... A special loyalty discount. As a thank you for being a Relab customer, for a limited time, you can get QuantX for only $124 (reg. $199) and save $75 Plus you'll also get a FREE Pulsar "Smasher" plug-in ($49 value) VERY IMPORTANT: In order to take advantage of this exclusive loyalty offer, you MUST log in at checkout and use these special links Start a Free 7-day Trial Here Buy QuantX for only $124 Here Buy QuantX for 3 Easy Payments of $41.33 Here This reverb was a true passion project for us and was years in the making (some of you may remember seeing it for the first time at NAMM 2020) and we spent a lot of time getting it to sound just right. We hope you love it as much as we do!
  10. Do you mean Digital Performer? My understanding is that is much more geared to orchestration. I went to NAMM one year and sat in on a demonstration on the latest features of Digital Performer (v11 IIRC). Can you guess what they used in the demonstration? It was *not* EDM, Trap, R&B, Metal, Rock or K-Pop. It was an orchestration.
  11. Have been unable to update since v.2019.05 due to I believe that's when the program went to a Windows10 requirement. So what you're saying is that my Windows 7 machine is essentially locked out from using the version of CwB currently installed on it? Sonar X2 and Platinum continued to function long after they were replaced 😞
  12. The latest default value for the buffer is 200ms, it was change in 2019.12 release... Before that it was 250ms... In the early Sonar days the default buffer was 500ms...
  13. I remember when Twelve Tone started the MIDI sequencer (Cakewalk) and would advertise in Modern Musician, Electronic Musician, Mix, and others, and with the introduction of audio editing and Windows 3.0 in '91, stepped up their presence in the trade rags and also at the major trade shows (NAMM & AES). There was still a bit of adverts and show presence, including the time under the Roland umbrella through to the beginning of the Gibson years as "Cakewalk Pro Audio", when Gibson put it on the back shelf to die as SONAR. From about '95 on, there was intense competition from ProTools, Sonic Solutions, and others for market share, and later when PT became native. Add to the mix the plethora of upstarts like Cubase, Nuendo, Studio One, FL, Reaper, et al, and a dwindling desire to market the product, the trade rags (becoming online presence mostly) just forgot about it. Since Bandlab took the reins as a free product, what marketing budget existed outside of forums, word of mouth, and the net, especially when Apple/PT TDM/HD pretty much had the majority market share in the professional realm, and MOBO/CPU's weren't really up to the task of 'unlimited' multitrack sessions until roughly the turn of the century. As for proponents and reviewers, it was out of sight, out of mind pretty much after the Gibson years. And a new paid version of Sonar will have, hopefully, a modicum of marketing budget going forward to increase their market share and improve the product.
  14. I got this several years ago for just a few dollars. Strezov sent me a free upgrade code for this remastered version. Very cool. Edit - looked it up, and it was only 9 Euro in 2019. Dealio!
  15. Many thanks to Dan Picknell, Danny Danzi and Hugo Ribeiro for helping Daryl and I get this song to the next level Note: remixed on 4 Jan 2024 This mix was reviewed by Warren Huart on Feedback Friday (via YouTube) 5 Jan 2024. HIs only critique is that "something" was clipping either on the master bus or before. Other than that he thought the song, production and performances were great. He especially liked the synth melody. Dan Picknell - Vocals Danny Danzi - Guitars Hugo Ribeiro - Drums Daryl Greenway - Lead Synth Ed Kocol - Bass, EP and light Synth Into The Night (c) 2021 Daryl Greenway & Ed Kocol Verse 1: I was raised on rock and roll It's in my head, my heart, my soul They say "You can't rock, you're too old" But I've never done what I've been told Chorus: Into the night I'm gonna rock Keep ticking 'til my clock won't tock I'm gonna run, no need to walk Into the night I'm gonna rock Verse 2: Rocking day and night was my thing Until I could make my guitar sing Waiting to grab the golden ring It's my dream and I will cling to it Repeat Chorus: Bridge: Nothing's gonna slow me down I'll keep rocking all over town I'll be here and always around In for a penny, in for a pound Verse 3: 2019 brought out a scare The days got longer, so did my hair Sat by the window, I could only stare From the comfort of my padded rocking chair Repeat Chorus
  16. Is Cakewalk going to NAMM. I feel like Cakewalk has evolved a lot in features and the community compared to the last NAMM. If so are they going to display some tracks made on Cakewalk?
  17. ~ Thanks, I really appreciate all the helpful suggestions! ...so I just need to pick a naming convention and stick to it. As each Project is opened, re-name using the new Naming convention and make sure the Folder + Projects + Exported Audio are all the same. like what @Tom Taylor listed, I need to figure out some meaningful shorthand for all this info! The BAND name will tell me what playing style is happening. (Heavy, Classical, Orchestral, Quad Tapping,, etc.) 1) How dangerous would it be to rename Folders and Projects outside of Cakewalk, Would it mess with the linked Audio? Some projects are outside of a folder and there are a few loose "Audio" folders that's one reason I'm trying to get this figured out. The names for the different Tuning is a challenge, open for suggestions. Semantics is an issue Like "KEY" for Legend or symbols not the key of the Song. Capo, with a K makes more sense since "K" is not a musical note, but ...well look up that word. 2) can we use "(6}" or "[8]" in a file and Project name? TAGS NECESSARY IN FILE NAME BAND - SONG - DATE - GUITAR + STRING# - TUNE- CATEGORY - VERSION TAG IDEAS ----------------------------------------------------------------------- A-440Hz STRING # 6S = Six String / Nylon = 6SNY / Acoustic = 6SAC 7S = Seven String 8S = Eight String QT - Quad Tap TUNE 6S ..................................................................................................E.-A-D-G-B-e 6S Drop D (E down to D).....................................................D-A-D-G-B-e 6S Drop C (E down to C) Capo 3rd Fret at (A-e) .......C-C-D-G-B-e / Open Strings (C-A-D-G-B-e) 6S HSB (Heart Shaped Box)...............................................D-A-E-A-C-e 7S............................................................................................G-C-G-C-F-A-D 8S.................................................................................F# B D A D G B e drop D = dD 6S drop C = 6S dC c3a-e (this looks atrocious! lol) Godin(6) drpC 3rdFrtCapo ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Example (Old Version) FOLDER: 2019 Epics Godin 1 2019 Epics Godin 1.cwp 2019 Epics Godin 1.wav Example (New Version) FOLDER: Elef Luna Oscura 2019-04-30 Godin dD DEM 01 Elef Luna Oscura 2019-04-30 Godin dD DEM 01.cwp Elef Luna Oscura 2019-04-30 Godin dD DEM 01.wav 8 String Guitar Project Example (Old Version) qt_agile8_mosquito_sketch01_MASTER.cwp Example (New Version) QT Mosquito 2012-10-02 Agile 8S dD TRK 01
  18. Someone got me started on this today and did most the of the heavy lifting so I completed the file today by cleaning out the illegal characters and adding Juno Di drum kits to the file. Here is what seems to be a good, working INS file for the Roland Juno DS complete with patches and drum kits. Thanks to those who worked on this before me and please post any improvements you might make in this thread. Gary ;) Roland-Juno-DS-200-ins.zip
  19. Craig’s post form another discussion got me thinking about gear that I had to let go of. This was in early 2019. The only thing left are the Les Paul Studio and the Fender Strat. These are the ones that are absolutely irreplaceable. The rest of the gear was mostly just average, inexpensive stuff. The second half of 2019 and 2020 hit pretty hard and I had to let go of a lot of gear and studio stuff, like my Pro Tools mixing surface (Command 8). I do regret having to sell the Marshall, but there was nothing unique about it. I can buy one just like it if I want to. I miss having a bass, but that’s also a simple fix. The acoustic and the Riviera I could not longer play due to the angle at which they put my right shoulder. The black Epiphone Les Paul had something special about it. It was one of those Epi’s which was somehow way better than it should have been considering its price and pedigree. But it’s not entirely irreplaceable, and the white Les Paul covers my needs. But that SGJ on the floor I’ll forever miss. I’d purchased a SG Standard that spring, with better pickups, locking tuners and all the nice stuff, so when hard time hit and I had to let some things go, I figured it would do. And it does sound 10 times better. But the SGJ was just magic. And it had a 50’s rounded neck, which is quite uncommon as far as I know. For some reason, even though it was very light, unlike most other SG’s I’ve played, it also felt extremely solid - that rounded neck may have had a lot to do with it. It was just the best guitar to sit in front of the tv with and just jam and practice. And it relic’ed just by me looking at it. There’s a couple of Marshall I had to let go earlier in my life that I miss, but that SGJ really takes the top spot. I’d probably buy it back for double what I sold it in a heartbeat (which still wouldn't be that bad because I let it go for peanuts,
  20. Just waling the virtual hallways at NAMM and came across a promotion from Spitfire Audio. During virtual NAMM you can get BBCSO DISCOVER FREE when using the code spitfirexnamm2021 at checkout. Check out the official NAMM site to register: https://www.namm.org/
  21. I've been working remotely since 2019. I had done that for a year before moving to the US in 2010-11. A lot of friends reached out when the pandemic hit because they had trouble adjusting to remote work. I couldn't imagine why they had so much difficulty - for me it's the best possible scenario, short of earning a living with music and books. I never have to leave the house except for groceries, once a week. I have my work laptop and display on a file cabinet on wheels, tucked by the side of my desk. Come the weekend, it takes me less than 40 seconds to clock out, close everything and roll that thing out of sight in another room for the next couple of days. Otherwise, it can always be tucked in a corner when I work on music on weekdays.
  22. April 2019 was 15 anniversary sale with 40% off. we can expect something more for 20 anniv?😆
  23. For the first time in its 120-year history, the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) is inviting in the general public to check out the latest innovations in musical products, recording technology, sound, lighting and much more. While the in-person event was canceled for 2021, the NAMM Show is going virtual. The virtual Believe in Music Week will feature live performances, access to the online marketplace, seminars, artist talks, award ceremonies and more Jan. 18-22. https://attend.believeinmusic.tv/
  24. Hi folks, Like we did last year at NAMM we'd like to showcase a few projects featuring the diverse work that you all do. At the booth, we like to have a playlist of projects that show the breadth of work done by our users with Cakewalk by BandLab. If you would like to have one of your projects considered for our showcase please post a link to the music in this thread with maybe a screenshot of the loaded project if possible. If you have a great sounding project that were produced primarily in CbB and showcases the application please post a link to the music in this thread with a screenshot of the loaded project. An easy way to audition mixes is to publish a mix of your project to BandLab and embed the BandLab link. (click the bandlab icon on the toolbar in the post editor to embed) The ones we picked last year should give you some guidelines on stuff that could work as a demo. NAMM can be noisy! Guidelines: We need a project file for a submission so please don't list songs that you cannot submit as a project file. All projects will be played from a Surface Book 2. We have some pretty heavy projects that play fine on the SB but freezing tracks might be required if the load is too much. Plug-ins. We normally have a suite of all Cakewalk plugins as well as some of the more popular third party plugins installed (Waves, NI, Melodyne, Slate Digital, FabFilter, ..) Please indicate what 3rd party plug-ins are used in every submission. If accepted we'll try and accommodate installing the plugins used if resources are available. We're looking for some diverse material so things like modern electronic music, film scores, jazz, metal, rock, etc are all viable candidates. Project's that showcase heavy use of certain features or production techniques are also viable candidates. e.g vocal comping, multi tracked drums, vocalsync, melodyne, advanced mixing, parallel compression, sidechaining, etc. We can also accommodate video files if the project has a video to accompany it. Video projects are attractive for demos. If you do have a video preferably submit a MPEG file or a format compatible for playback within CbB . The video must be synced to the audio. You must have rights to share the music and may need to sign a release form Accepted projects will need to be uploaded to a shared folder or a download link will need to be provided by you Time is short so we'll need these by end of next week to get prepped. Thanks!
