About Me

  1. I didn't know this feedback loop thingy existed. Or else I wouldn't have made a video pointing out the most obvious problems I have been facing in Cakewalk. I was waiting for the comments to accumulate to see the opinion (and other suggestions) of others before reaching out to the social handles of Bandlab. And it is from the comments I came across this feedback loop. These are the points I stated in that video. These are the issues that were mentioned in it. No MIDI Clip isolation Automation Issues Exporting issue with track outs MIDI Clip isolation Cakewalk must be the only DAW that I have used, that doesn't let us isolate or MIDI data inside a MIDI clip. From the comments, I figured many users actually prefer having to see the entire MIDI data in a track, even though it might be even above 10 minutes. So, I hope it can be brought in like an option that can be turned ON and OFF like the Clip outlines I showed in the video. Automation Issues There are too many automation issues that it can be a post of its own. I strongly suggest watching the video to see the obvious issues like unresponsive automation, delay in automation timing, and weird sound output. Apart from it is hard to carry out simple copy and paste with automation data. Exporting issue with track outs When we export track outs, the bus effects does not get applied to the tracks. I talked to someone who had used Cakewalk from 1998 and he said it wasn't like that. Back when Cakewalk was Sonar, the bus FX did get applied to individual track outs. This is necessary when we are working with other people. Hope you look into these as soon as possible, at least the second and third issues. -AdK
  2. Hello!! I have a problem when I'm writing automation in a chanel or bus (Volume riding, for example) This happens either if I use my external universal control surface or when I ride with the mouse. I´ll try to explain. If I want to do very fast ridings on a fader, I click on the icon to Write the movements (W), then, I start to playing the track and begin riding. While this is happening, Cakewalk seems to read every fine riding I do . Then I stop the automatization and now, the line of the envelope only shows hard movements, not fine ridings. In other words, is not reading my fine movements. Can somebody tel me how I fix this? Attached two files that show what I mean Many thanks Hector Tapia
  3. Super Simple. Instead of having to bring up the track properties (right side), to change the write mode, it should be in the write automation icon right-click menu as well:
  4. Hello people! ... message in a bottle here... Allow me to write down here my "in progress" reflection on editing VO / Narrations best practices / workflows. I am currently working on my first audio book (getting back from an 80% DAW-ACTIVITY STOP that lasted for the last decade... so be forgiving... building back my chops here...) Sometimes, trying to sort out some thoughts might be helpful for me and others and even trigger a discussion about better workflows? Maybe not... anyway... bombs away. ... SO... being the lazy a**h*** that I am, i'm trying to re-invent the wheel on day one of working on a new project... sooooo me.... (but i'll call it "process optimization attempt" officially) 😉 CONTEXT / OBJECTIVES Working on a audio book with a session that lasts about 3 hrs and should be edited back to about 90-120 minutes. Working with, of course, TIME RULER MARKERS Trying to evaluate scenarios to help share time-ruler markers between other software tools... Testing the new ARRANGEMENT feature to edit out the outtakes and render correctly-edited files (no audio process yet...) Evaluating alternative workflows... QUESTIONS Is there anything like clip-based time markers/rulers? (to comment at the "original recording" time period, in order to keep the "session / project time ruler" fully avail for the editing process). Is there anything like a VST "time marker ruler" (in order to share time-based production notes between programs...)? According to KVR in 2018, there is no such thing... Is there a way to better take notes of the "out-takes" WHILE RECORDING? Like, I do not know... be able to use the mute tool to mute out portions you already know you won't be keeping? I was tempted to use a midi track with clips... Next time i'll try the ARRANGEMENT FEATURE to mark... (I just was afraid to use it while mission-critical recording). Should some time-marking capabilities be avail at the TRACK FOLDER level? Should 2 more "marker types" be made avail? Like a "cut start" and a "cut end" marker type? (I know i can just mark "I" and "O" in the comments, but to have a specific type could be more easily connected to other editing tools / workflow... or even to CAL? I dunno...) ACTUAL ATTEMPTS Tried to use the new ARRANGEMENT feature in CwbBl (like some kind of a CUTLIST like in sound forge... but here, of course, I identified what needed to be KEPT). So far so good... it is really scary though to look at the time-line shift around when rendering... makes me feel like an audio region in the latter portion of my timeline will be deleted... The "markers to arrangements" feature worked as expected. Render proceeded as expected. Proceeding now to listen to this render to see if clips and pops can be heard (of course, the "reading flow" might not be the best at that point... but I did try to evaluate what was the narrator's current flow at the time of the edits, to minimize further editing down the road... I guess I am about to know if I succeeded or not... 😉 WORKFLOW PROPOSITIONS Since the ARRANGER feature scared me a little, I might try to use VOLUME AUTOMATION (or other type of automation that could be "shared" between softwares) to cut out the bad takes of my recordings, and then render the file to a new track and complete the file using the strip silence feature... I am kind of hoping that if I needed to also work in another program for specific reasons (like SoundForge or spectraLayers) I could manage to export the file combined with the automation envelope in order for me to have some kind of time markers shared between programs somehow... PROS : would be "movable" with my original recorded clips, leaving my time ruler markers / arrangements sections free to be used for the "finished" files... CONS: navigation would not be as easy as moving between markers using shortcuts... I'll keep you posted... maybe... Do find this post interesting somewhat? Or should I just stop it right here? Regards.
  5. Hello everyone, I have question for those using Kontakt here. I'm working on a multi-instrumental track and I've loaded all the different instruments and patches into one instance of Kontakt 6 - so one synth with 11 output tracks . Is it possible to create a separate automation line for each track and with each instrument loaded into Kontakt, or does the automation work only per synth (in this case 1) ? Can't figure it out and it seems that there's not much support available about this case. Thanks in advance for your help !
  6. Hi¡ I'd like to submit what seems like a bug in my opinion in the latest update of Cakewalk by Bandlab. I have a track effects bin with multiple eq plugins of the same brand (fabfilter). All of them have some automation info embedded into their respective automation lanes. The thing is that whenever I delete one of these plugins, the automation info on the other plugins of the same kind and brand gets deleted as well. If it were only the automation info pertaining to that specific plugin, there would be no problem; this would be normal behaviour. However, the issue is that it deletes the automation info pertaining to the other plugins as well, the ones which are not being deleted. I have found a workaround this problem by copying the automation info of all the track to another track and then pasting it back again to the original, but it would be great to have this bug fixed as it's probably not to hard to do so. Thank you.
  7. I am seeing this behavior ever since updating to the 2020.05 update (build 039 64-bit), it always worked before this update 1. Open project file with track automation as seen here: 2. Collapse track automation so it all appears on one track: 3. Select entire region with MIDI and track automation and select EDIT > COPY SPECIAL and choose: 4. Go to your new project, insert softsynth and choose EDIT > PASTE SPECIAL: (I tried with the "Paste To One Track" on/off and also switched between "Blend Old and New" and "Replace Old with New"): 5. Here is the end result (as you can see it only copied the MIDI notes and not the track automation:
  8. This is more of a request for the developers. It's a feature I've used in previous versions of Cubase. It's been useful to me automating the on/off switch of send, and for what I've been reading, it can't be done on Cakewalk. I can give you an example on how I use it. When sending a signal to a delay bus, in this way I can send it only in parts I want, for example, on certain parts of vocals. What's the difference between automating the send and muting the delay bus for example? The thing is I need trails. If I mute the track or the delay's output, I lose the delay's trail. That delay in particular, which I like very much, doesn't have an input switch or knob, so I can't automate that. I know I could automate the send knob by taking it down and up to the levels I need in those particular parts. But I feel it's annoying to do that, when I need to write automation for the delay parts in real time, it just can´t be done with precision. I can write the automation with snapshots, but again, it's slow and time consuming, compared to doing it in real time and then fixing the parts that didn't come out well by hand. I feel it's a feature that should be added long time ago. I hope they do it soon.
  9. I just discovered that Bitwig Studio has a convenient workflow for editing the MPE pitch automation of a note directly inside the piano roll, demonstrated in this video at 5:21 Yet I couldn't find anything like that in Cakewalk by Bandlab. I've read that Cakewalk does support MPE, but where do I draw out my per-note pitch automation? Does Cakewalk even have such a feature up to this point of time?
  10. Hello everyone, I was just wondering how to curve automation in Cakewalk by Bandlab. I know you can draw out points to make curves, but I wanted to know if there was a way I can plot a point in the middle and move it down a little so it can slowly increase in volume (or the other way around).

  12. Hi I find myself gravitating more and more towards Cakewalk by BandLab, but I am frustrated by its pitch bend function. It sounds normal when playing live, but it never comes out smoothly when recording the midi keyboard or even drawing in the pitch bend automation manually. I prefer doing it manually at times, but drawing it in is such a tedious job. Anyway, for some reason it sounds more like stutter as it shifts from one tone to the next. Is there a way to get the pitch bend smoother? Below is a quick picture I drew to let you know what I am talking about. How do I get it like the first example and not the second one? In other DAWs you work with nodes and it is so easy to get smooth pitch bend sounds. What am I missing? Please help me.
  13. OK. So I saw the update info on the new version of Cakewalk by Bandlab with the "Arranger" feature! It looked killer! So installed it, but for some reason the program is really buggy now. The toolbar across the top resets to a minimal set of modules every time I open a new project (or reopen the same project). Clip automation is buggy. I can draw in a few edit points, but then automation freezes. The only way I could finish a simple clip automation was to save the project then do a track automation. My changes to the track view don't remain...I'm always needing to click the little box that says "Workspace" directly above the tracks to say "all" so I can get "Mix, FX, I/O" and everything else. Project is starting to freeze quite often...I have to reboot Cakewalk to play a file. Anyone having the same problems? Is this update too fresh for prime-time? Or am I doing something wrong. Thanks. Donnie
  14. For those synths that don´t have front panel midi learn, a good workaround is creating knobs in the Synth Rack for the automatable parameters and adding remote control to those. CbB reloads the knobs whit the synth, but it would be great to be able to save different assignment presets, especially for programs like Reaktor, virtual modular synths, or others that can have completely different configurations, to map to controllers with limited number of knobs.
  15. Hi everyone I've been a long-time fan of the free Vinyl plug-in by Izotope (https://www.izotope.com/en/products/vinyl.html) for lo-fi effects I'm working on a track where I want only part of the song to use Vinyl. So I put Vinyl into an FX Chain in the Master Pro Channel, and then automated the chain's on/off button. But this results in a bit of a click every time it goes on/off. I'd rather take a beat or two to fade-in/fade-out the lo-fi effect. Any suggestions on how to do this? In Vinyl, there is only a bypass switch, there's no mix knob to automate. Thanks! Neel
  16. Hello, I am trying to draw in volume changes (volume automation) on a MIDI track track that's outputting to an external hardware synth. It's working but the points I can draw are being quantised in time to half a beat (1/8 of a bar). I would like the quantisation to be finer. Anyone know how to control this? Thanks!
  17. Got no idea whats going on, I have multiple automation lanes on multiple tracks and its only 2 lanes that have an issue, both are controlling the dry/wet mix on reverb 2 cakewalk. When I export the mix, the automation for these lanes occurs later than its programmed to, then after a while, snaps back to what is supposed to be, not following the automation curve at all. However, the automation behaves absolutely fine when the track is played in cakewalk before export. the automation in the image is used to build up reverb before a drop, however, the reverb builds up approximately 4 bars later than displayed then approximately 4 bars later (so, in the middle of the section after) it snaps back to the level set. I've tried restarting cakewalk, removing muted recordings on the track, removing missing automation sections, checked everything to do with the export, and i cant fix it. interestingly, should I export just the section after the automation (the 8 bars at the end in the image) the automation behaves fine, if i export the loop, the automation is late, but only by a bar or so, the more before this i export, the larger the offset.
  18. it would be nice to record automation for existing midi-track with few lanes, but without erasing notes. there is a button to record automation, but there's no button to disable notes recording and in record mode i d'like to merge notes with automation, but it needs to record input through another midi-track and then no way to split things. Also when i record knob automation it doesn't recognizes the vst\synth knob it just records CC-event and puts it in CC-events-change list, but there are automation lanes for that, so it should record into those lanes and this way it will be possible to record just lanes, not whole midi-track. So it needs to properly read vst-knobs and put them in automation list, then associate those CC-events made by device with vst-events and make it work.
  19. Hello I'm french so please forgive my english Why can't I save the automation of my soft synth ( Massive or others) when I close Cakewalk ? When I open Cakewalk next time and load my project, I can see the automation curve on the synth's track but this curve is writen "orphan" and doesn't pilot anymore the synth. Then it's impossible to record a new automation, I have to take off and put again the synthetiseur to be able to do a new automation. Thank you for your answers and helping Fred
  20. After I create a mix and listen to it in other settings (e.g., the car), I notice that I want to increase or decrease the volume of a part. But doing that is not as simple as changing the overall volume of a track. This is because typically the part to change had varying recorded volumes to begin with due to multiple takes, etc. So I use a volume envelope. Meanwhile, to make a change to a whole section with multiple envelope values is a pain. So it would be great for Cakewalk to offer a way to modify all envelope values by a user-defined dB value from a set start and end time.
  21. I tried to record a fade out, by automating the Master bus fader, and that worked fine of course. But how can I edit the automation envelope afterwards, or create one from scratch? The Master bus does not have an Edit Filter drop down, like tracks have. I'm using version 2019.09 (Build 70, 64 bit) which is the latest one, I believe.
  22. MIDI СС automation is a pain that kills all desire to work in Cakewalk. Cakewalk has the best solution on the market in multi-instrumental MIDI editing mode. But it's completely impossible to work with automation inside MIDI clips. Studio One - has a line of automation. Reaper has excellent scripts for quickly drawing different envelopes - it is even sometimes more convenient than the lines in Studio One May have many times asked for something to do with it. Please, developers, let's think together how we can better change this. Happen again... Cakewalk has the best system on the market for working with multi-tools in a MIDI editor, but due to the inability to work properly with MIDI-CC automation, all this work is reduced to zero. 😞 The mandatory item that I would like to see is The reset of the MIDI CC after pressing "Stop" to the user-set values. This system is in the Reaper and it helps a lot in the work.

  24. So i bought an Acer T232HL touch screen a while back thinking i could use it as a mini Slate Raven 😂 as cakewalk has touch support. But one thing has always bugged me is how the fader always has an initial jump when u try to move it, so i never actually adopted the touch capabilities for automation and only used it as a secondary monitor. Is anyone else using a touchscreen monitor have this problem too or is this a problem with my specific monitor/touch setting? heres a short vid showing the issue, pardon my bad fader skills as i was trying to move it while seeing from the phone screen
