  1. It takes a lot of skill to handle delicate music like this, and you did a great job with this production! I guess I heard the latest version, as the vocal is at least equal with the other parts of the mix. It's all clean and spacious which leaves room for the listener to fill in the spaces. Participatory music, so to speak. The video is well done, too. Keep it going!
  2. This is a very nice song with a beautiful message that deserves to be heard a little louder, maybe 2-4 dbs. I think that if you put it in people's faces, it will be a very impressive song!
  3. This is a terrific song that's searching for a terrific mix. The drum issue has been brought up, and I agree with those observations, and I also think that the drums should be at least as loud as the guitars. This song is looking for a driving kick and snare beat with body. I also had trouble locating the bass guitar at times. As mentioned before, your lyrics are inspired and deserve to be heard! Turn those vocals up above the instruments (slightly), and you'll be in the ball park. I enjoyed the unpredictable middle section, which makes your arrangement a step above. A few more tweaks and this will be stellar.
  4. Here is mix #4: https://soundclick.com/r/s8n3ik I rethought the arrangement, per Paul Bush, and came up with this. I ping-ponged the gtr in the intro and dropped the guitars from the pre-choruses altogether. This song has come a long way thanks to all your good ideas! I'm glad I'm not in a vacuum!
  5. That's music to my ears! I did spend considerable time mixing on headphones, though, good suggestions from everyone keeps pushing this in the right direction. Thank you so much! Hi Fred. I just listened to your marvelous "Lucille" and what a treat! I really appreciate your words, as I was in the dark for so long with this. As for the ending; it was one of those situations where I combined one song with part of another. A shuffle married to a boogie. Antler, thank you for your kind words and suggestion. I just posted mix #4 which tinkered with the drums and other elements as well. Maybe it'll be closer, though I will tinker with your ideas, too.

I second this! Your creative juices are better than ever! I went the distance with this and was shocked that it seemed so short. I want more!

David, you are one of the most unpredictable songwriters going! Having spent some time in Portland, I was really interested in the first video, especially since the music seemed a departure for you. Then I was "hey dawg!". For whatever reason, that resonated within me on a visceral level that surprised me. Another leap for creativity!
  8. Way cool, man! I'll be coming back to this site until I hear them all.
  9. You hit the nail on the head, Jesse! I wish that I had written this song. I want to share this with a few people
  10. You chose a great song to cover, and using the Everly's arrangement is the way to go if you're not Little Richard. You captured the essence of this song in your own way, actually, with your unique guitar playing and sound. Really tasty! Your vocals sound like something coming from the speaker of my dad's 1956 pickup am radio. You give nostalgia a good name!
  11. Cool, I must be going in the right direction. I very much appreciate the SRV comment, as I have listened to him a lot throughout the years, however, lately I've been listening to Gary Moore. I knew about him all my life, but recently started watching his live videos on YouTube. You're spot on about the drums, and I must constantly keep reminding myself to hit them harder. Many thanks! Thanks Wookie for your kind words! I appreciate your notice of the lyrics, as I tried to make them as universal as possible. There has been a lot going on in the lives of the people in my life and myself, too. You're not the only one who noticed the density of the mix. I originally wrote this as a five piece band: 2 guitars, bass, keyboard, and drums - something that a good garage band could play live. However, Paul Bush encouraged me to give this more thought, and that's my goal for this weekend. Thanks to all, and stay tuned!
  12. Paul, thanks for your input and time! I'm in no hurry to finish this, and all the suggestions I've received have been good. I take your words to heart, so stay tuned!
  13. Many of your songs are hauntingly beautiful, and this is one of them! Great job on stretching your voice and arrangements, and trying out new ideas all the time. We can all use some of that.
  14. Terrific song and performances! This may just be me, but I'd like to hear the lead vocal up a few db's. Otherwise, this is a hit waiting to happen.
  15. Jesse, before you go off into the wild blue yonder, this tune raised the bar for me. I've always thought your guitar playing is understated but excellent. Your understanding of scales is off the charts, therefor, it takes a bit of having a taste for the bizarre, yet you're right on the money! Love it!
  16. OK, I took MichaelJohn's suggestion and lowered the bass and brought up the drums, but just by a few db's. https://soundclick.com/r/s8maw8
  17. Jesse, thanks a million for your encouraging words! I feel that I'm getting closer. Btw, I love your new song; I'll tell you more about that in your post. Thank you MJ for you ears! I'm going to try your idea in a little while. I'm still looking for that balance between speakers and headphones. Bjorn, this is high praise coming from you, my friend! As you can see above, I'm still getting good suggestions and will be trying them out in a little while. I do think it's getting closer to the mark, but I DO love mixing... (the forest is larger today)
  18. I've taken all your suggestions and remixed this just now. I beefed up the drums and redid some parts to tighten it up, I hope. I also added some "ghost" reverb on the lead vox and delay in certain sections. I'm beginning to see the forest in spite of the trees and think that this tune is moving in the right direction. https://soundclick.com/r/s8maw8
  19. OK, thanks guys! More time mixing today! One note: I did intentionally leave out the kick and snare until halfway through verse one, and may yet keep this feature. What do you think?
  20. Thanks for the tips! I am trying to keep everything clean and in its place, but maybe too conservative in my approach. I'll be trying out your ideas.
  21. Hi everyone! Here's a song that I've worked on for weeks, and I've mixed and rerecorded it many times and have finally decided to put it up for advice. I feel like I'm in the middle of the forest at this point, so thanks in advance for any and all help. It can be found here: https://soundclick.com/r/s8maw8 Mix #4: https://soundclick.com/r/s8n3ik (based on Paul Bush's suggestion to rethink the mix)
  22. Kevin, I really like this song, and I think it's well played and the high energy comes through in spite of the heavy reverb. Sometimes when an element like your lead vocal is heavily effected, other elements like your guitars and drums can be dry, and the mind will still hear the reverb on everything. The way I hear it now sounds like every track went through the same reverb and has the same level of depth. Maybe reduce the reverb on some of the tracks? All in all, this still rocks!
  23. Both the music and video are mesmerizing! I particularly like the stereo separation and the drum work. I like the way the vocals morph from f/x to clarity throughout. I always learn something from you.
  24. I remember this song quite well because I used to jam on it in the day. As always, your covers are uniquely your own while paying homage to the original. You have very good taste!
