As i am from ireland i will start this thread with the Irish hopefuls playing off against each other tonight. The EV is in Malmo Sweden this year ( Home of ABBA :D ) .. Both Ireland and Sweden are most successful EV nations, both have now won it 7 times, so grudge match this year tween the 2 .. will either of them win to move to 8 times.

So all the national entries are being whittled down across Europe for the Final in malmo Sweden - Tue, May 7, 2024 – Sat, May 11, 2024.

Tonight that happens in Ireland ( tune into the national station RTE 1 this evening at 9:30pm GMT ). Here are the 6 trax on offer:

BAMBIE THUG - Doomsday Bluehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcFyY6hrhI4

So my fav is BAMBIE THUG - Marilyn Manson, Dark GAGA, a bit of rebelious Madonna rolled into one - but also because she is from a town called Macroom here in Co. Cork .. the county I hale from :D .. I love the light and shade in this track .. the unexpected Chorus with its hook

That's an exciting matchup between Ireland and Sweden, both powerhouse nations in the Eurovision Song Contest! The history of success for both countries adds an extra layer of anticipation to this year's competition. It must be thrilling to see how the Irish and Swedish hopefuls will fare in the contest.

BTW I do think at this stage the USA should be in the Eurovision .. Canada etc if they wished. Australia have been in it for last few years. It really is no longer a Europe only event

Articles below revolve around Eurovision 2023 ( last year in May ), but detail still applies

https://www.irishmirror.ie/showbiz/us-gossip/america-isnt-eurovision-chaotic-attempt-29965092

To participate, a country must have a broadcaster that is operating within Europe as part of the EBU.

It is then up to that broadcaster to choose their performer either through a national, televised, selection process or via an internal selection.

The country then decides to send their number one star or best new talent and have them locked in by mid-March.

The EBU has just announced Eurovision Canada, a spin-off competition based solely in the North American nation.

Kicking off in 2023, artists from Canada’s 10 provinces and territories will battle it out for the top prize.

The EBU stated: "The format will position artists head-to-head against other provincial/territorial representatives in a series of televised Qualifier Competitions, leading to Semi-Finals and the ultimate primetime Grand Finale."

There are no plans for Canada to take part in the main competition - with the same applying for the US.

@Bridget Murphy Every year since mid 90s I have threatened not to watch Eurovision because, from there, we lost our Eurovision mojo somehow and failed to either qualify or win since.  But each year I relent and find I am drawn to it, with HOPE that once again we might qualify for a final again.

This years the Eurovision is 2 semi final nights in Malmo Sweden - 7th and 9th of May. The final is on the 11th of May.

Each year, either five or six countries are exempt from the drawing for competing in the semi-finals, go straight to final: the "Big Five" (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom) and the host country, if the host is not one of the "Big Five".  The big 5 are exempt because traditionally they are the main funders it seems.

Last time Ireland won was in 1996 - Eimear Quinn with THE VOICE ( Vid below )

In the intervening time the number of countries partaking in Eurovision substantially increased especially with East European ( Former warsaw Pact, ex USSR ) countries joining.  All sorts of rumours of voting pacts etc etc changed the dynamic.

It is more than what it was in the 90s now .. No longer just a song contest. It is all about a big show now, theatrics etc. It is a spectical now which is great and there are generally more than a good few decent songs in there.

The issue with Ireland and its Eurosong local in country selection process was that they were stuck in the 90s / pre 90s and tended to send pretty bland stuff. Some saying that the national broadcaster ( RTE )  did not take it seriously enough. In last 2, 3  years they upped there game a bit by having more involved in the voting process - 3 juries - an "International" Jury, A studio/local Jury and then the listeners / text in making up the scores.

So this year has been interesting with the selection of BAMBIE THUG. The track is definitely far far different than what we presented for the last 28 years. Its in your face, brilliant theatrics, costumes and delivery, should translate really well on a big stage in Malmo Sweden. Its already getting much discussion across Europe and Eurovision youtube channels, forums, social media which is what you want. Most comment really likes it and are surprised .. THIS, from IRELAND? .. a sort of welcome back Ireland also :D

The eurosong  voting last friday night in Ireland ( on the Late Late Show ) was interesting. Six tracks inc Bambie Thug. Favourite was Erica Cody track. Louis Walsh had a Boy Bland ( sorry band :D ) track in there. The International jury gave there votes to that track. But the local jury and the public gave overwhelming vote to Bambie - general consensus was we need to seriously do something different this time.

At the betting odds sites we are in the top 7 to win so far ( SWEDEN is 6th ), that hasnt happened to an Irish entry for 28 years :D .. so we must finally be doing something right.

Bambie is from CO. CORK ( Macroom ). Me also a Corkonian so maybe biased :D ...

National radio station RTE Radio 1  interviewed Bambie other morning, here is the podcast if you want to hear. Serious head on Bambie, knows whats needed, some big ideas for the night itself in Malmo. Also go listen to other material from Bambie Thug on Spotify, Youtube and the like. Some really pro great tracks like the one above in previous post and als track called Tsunami .. OK may not be for some peoples taste but vrey pro me thinks, great sound, well produced videos

Hmm, I dunno, wasn't the original purpose of Eurovision to promote friendship among European countries in the wake of WWII? If the US and Canada are invited, there's another pretty large North American country that would be left out, Mexico (yes, Mexico is North America, not Central America). I bet Mexico could come up with an appropriately insane, over the top contender.

I'm still p.o.'d about the UK choosing Katrina and the Waves over Do Re Mi (featuring Kerry) in 1997. "Yodel in the Canyon of Love" is a stone classic.

  • aidan o driscoll changed the title to Eurovision 2024 thread ... FINAL: Sat May 11th 2024

So for the uninitiated the Eurovision 2024 is this coming Saturday 11th May. Before that we have two semi finals where 30 ( 15 per night ) acts compete for 20 places to appear in the final this saturday. Last night - Tuesday - was the first semi final. The 10 countries through to the final from that are:

Serbia, Portugal, Slovenia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Finland, Cyprus, Croatia, Ireland, Luxembourg

Now i am biased as i am Irish ( and from Cork, not too far from Macroom where Bambie is from )  and have posted here about the Irish act called Bambie Thug, first non binary act to appear at EV finals and pretty unique. Also last time Ireland got to the finals was in 2018, so a bit of a drought since.

Below is video on de Youtube of Bambies performance last evening to get through to final. Remember now a days the EV is gone beyond just a song contest - it is now Spectacle and huge performance and DIFFERENT that gets you there. Bambie, i think, ticks all the boxes?

Bambie is a prolific songwriter inc for TV/FILM & for others. Started out as a ballerina. WHO IS BAMBIE THUG?

https://www.corkbeo.ie/culture/whats-on-news/who-bambie-thug-irelands-eurovision-29129462

Other standout acts last night were CROATIAs Baby Lasagne with "Rim Tim Tagi Dim" and FINLANDs Windows95man with "No Rules!" .. all live performances are up at Eurovision Youtube channel, you will find via the bambie youtube link above

Thursday is the next semi final - another 15 compete for the 10 places.

Just a heads up - Thursdays ( tomorrow ) 2nd semi final may unfortunately garner headlines not related to the spectacle that is the Eurovision. This semi includes Israel.  The EBU ( European Broadcasting Union ) over the years tries to keep the EV apolitical and has banned acts in the past for being political.  The Israel track originally had overt political lyric content about October 7th but were told to change same which they apparently did:

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2024/mar/07/israel-to-compete-at-eurovision-song-contest-after-changing-lyrics-to-its-entry

But now in recent weeks as we approach the semis and final things have ramped up a knotch with calls to boycott Israel, or other acts being pressured to step out of the competition ( inc Bambie ), which I think is unfair. If a call is made for a country not to partake then its that countries local broadcast union to make that decision, not the artist. So across social media, newspapers etc - its covered in hate and bile inc toward the artists competing. This threatens to cause difficulty at the 2nd semi final tomorrow night. There is huge security at Malmo in Sweden for this. As it is the security to enter the arena is extremely tough and hardened.

Hope this all goes without incident .. but I fear the opposite perhaps.

An FYI re EBU Rules. No political songs/lyrics allowed, no political emblems or iconography on persons or elsewhere allowed. these are examined pre contest and the artist / union needs to sign a declaration explaing the iconography or emblems and remove same if political.

Bambie does use ancient Irish OGHAM text on the face and arms etc. They had written in Ogham on their face PEACE or similar, they had to remove this.

In general, Bambie does tap into ancient Irish & celtic myth and symbolism .. the country is rich in this. So alot of the influences and things included in their performance comes from this history
