Excessive scrolling to select/delete Sends
jackson white replied to jackson white's topic in Feedback Loop
the last few projects have reminded me how productive it would be to have "Delete Send" at the top of a rather long list vs the -bottom-. not sure what use case prioritizes A/I sends over Bus/Aux/Patch Points, but would find "Delete Send" followed by "New Stereo Bus... Patch Point" more than useful.- 6 replies

Acustica Fire Filter - First of the Fire One Knob Series
jackson white replied to Larry Shelby's topic in Deals
Interesting indeed, meaning they can now kill your cpu with only one knob? sporting a gui which spits out cpu cores as you crank the knob. ?- 26 replies

having trouble remembering where it installed it's presets. imo, some interesting sounds, but ime experience, a bit sketchy given how many times I've gotten that "Error 1, Let's fix it." This goes for paid products as well, and apparently for others given the comments in the link.

Every Day - original blues influenced rock song
jackson white replied to PavlovsCat's topic in Songs
might have been more helpful to suggest making the LV more present in the mix, perhaps with some combination of complementary eq, compression, saturation? here's another guy who "can’t listen to his vocals" and "claimed that he had only learnt how to sing 'recently' " most (of my) vocal performances “make me cringe a little bit” -
Every Day - original blues influenced rock song
jackson white replied to PavlovsCat's topic in Songs
a common problem, but being your unique bad*ss self and doing what you do with conviction/feeling is going to make for a much more interesting song. handing off the mix to someone else might be worth a try just to see what happens. liked the energy/dynamics of the 2nd mix better, sounds like a nice direction to explore -
bitcoin or similar crypto-currencies. perhaps because GPU processing power is typically an underutilized resource which can be used in parallel to crank on them blockchains?

jayzus... just got around to looking at video cards, should have invested in video ram instead of bitcoin. must be giving the cable aisle at microcenter a run for the money as the best performing profit center.

yep, but the reg price of Reaper is pretty reasonable compared to the alternatives (do they even have sales?). Doubt it will all get sorted out in 60 days, but not expecting them to send the agency after me if it takes a bit longer. AFAIK, there are no showstoppers on functionality.

the recent aquisitions by "investment" companies and the propensity for legal extortion is another shadow on the wall.

@aidan o driscoll thx, drums are a sore point atm. pretty much an exclusive BFD user here given a focus on "organic/acoustic" tracks, got ambushed by the authorization scheme buried in the InMusic relaunch about a year ago, looking into alternatives, but finding very little that doesn't have too much processing baked into the sound. some of the SD3 kits mention "raw" samples, but don't appear to be as useful wrt to cymbals/resonance/ambience options/etc and so far not easily finding substitutes for the gotos we've been using. spent the last 6 months setting up our first call drummer to record decent audio which went well enough that he was able to release a sample pack of his own, but getting him to like and use Reaper will be a bigger challenge. ? @sarine ROI is mos def the consideration here, rethinking how to get anything done given the current/ongoing circumstances. Hope to keep any customization simple enough to survive a Mac OS update. If there's a viable best practice out there, haven't heard of it yet. Reaper's on the radar given it's cross platform, customizable and compact with a reputation for stability, but not familiar enough with that ecosystem to know where to go looking for useful input.

Maybe, thx for asking. the tech issues always end up on my plate but np for me to customize/code the tools we use. the nature of the problem actually. good musos, but tech not a high priority for them (a bit of a cliche but maybe why they're apple users?) used to track in person, but trying to work through a bit of pandemic diaspora. the thought (hope?) was to minimize the tech overhead as much as possible and create a shared workflow/template/setup for a "plug and play" environment to work up parts. the perceived DIY nature of Reaper is a -major- deterrent but perhaps the best candidate to explore. so ya, probably overthinking it, should just make time for a test case and do a bit of learning by doing.

didn't NI recently "join forces" with iZotope? doubt it's been mentioned anywhere, but handing off the Kontakt interface to the iZotope UI/UX designers would be a win-win. they just might win my money if they did.
-
most likely true, but I find a lot of my peeps buying apps/fx to make their iPhone vids more interesting...
-
^this! thx, very useful answer, appreciate the insight/comments wrt ur experience. we do a lot of writing/arrangement work and been tracking remotely given everything pandemic but the projects have had to run through me which is not efficient or desirable. Key CW features are arranger/ripple edit/take lanes/speed comping, find the mixing workflow intuitive and would make good use of notation if it ported. The export update in CW has helped but my peeps are still mostly Apple users. Reaper has been on the radar for a while, but ima bit leery of getting sucked into the potential for customization and the SWS? extensions. And it might be challenge for the first call drummer, great player, but my drum vst has more patience....
-
@aidan o driscoll ya, an ongoing issue for me, used to manage this when everyone was on PT, but pretty much done with that going forward. Getting by with transfering audio files atm, but wondering if bringing everyone up to speed on Reaper -might- be more productive. unforunately, the groundwork would end up on my plate and as mentioned not sure if the flexibility/customization is a blessing or a curse... ? do the Mac only members of your project use Reaper as a main DAW or is it only for shared tasks? ? And out of curiosity, do all members use the same theme? TIA.

assume that means they are dependent on core CW FX then right? if so, are these dependencies documented anywhere? IIRC, some of the extras developed by Craig Anderton hit a few speedbumps when FX (TH3?) were upgraded, but would not be a problem for a 3rd party dev, which might be a plus for PC versions.
-
perhaps the "style dials" was a reason for the 3rd party devs to "pause"? however, the PC could represent some low hanging fruit and an additional "try it you might like it" channel given the glut of everything vst out there.

made this suggestion to Valhalla, at least a couple of times, and Melda in case he runs out of stuff to work on, mainly because their UI design should port well. I expect the API is proprietary, but bet it is well documented. never had any PC issues which is a good sign for a stable implementaiton

Ya, went through the exercise of switching ports for a USB 3.1 compatible AI between 3.0 and 3.1 (TASCAM not MOTU). Seemed to recall this -might- have been an issue at some time in the past, but not since installing (and reinstalling post WIN10 updates) the latest native ASIO drivers. ... Noting (for the first time) that Task Manager has Cakewalk.exe running at "Normal" priority. Gonna look into making that "High", figuring out how to make it stick atm as it comes up as Normal on launch. ... (simple.... add a "/high" flag to the target in the shortcut, will beat on it this week to see if it makes a difference)

sorry to hear this, been trying to debug similar (intermittent) behavior since Mar 2021 on a dedicated system (i7-5820k @3.3GHz, 32GB DDR4) which has run like a champ for years, even with fairly 'mature' mixes (i.e. more active VSTs). It will run just fine at times, but have what sounds like the same problem. (NB mostly on playback here as all FX are generally disabled for recording except the track that needs it.) In addition to reviewing/resetting all the usual suspects after a WIN10 update, ran LatencyMon a number of times = everything reports as fine until it's not...? with no clear suspect flagged which makes me think it's some sort of intermittent system issue. All wifi/network adapters, BT, etc. are disabled and system hw conditions have been actively monitored as well to eliminate that as an issue. More recently noting problems when a project first loads and when changing A/I buffer sizes. It seems like the audio engine has problems sorting everything out and takes a couple of start/stops to get everything lined up. This is not something I've experienced on any other DAW/PC (PT, S1 (3x PCs) Logic (2x Mac) ). Tried A/I buffer settings, finding that makes a difference (256 has been more stable than 64/128/1024/2048) but not 100% definitive. Considered HDD access issues (moved the project to an SSD (= no improvement). This "tape stop/drag" often occurs at a fairly specific section in one song (last verse) but there is nothing special or extra heavy in that section. Also noted I can get this to happen on demand by simply opening a VST or browser window, something that never used to happen with the exact same project. The cores in the performance monitor will be bouncing along as expected at about 40-50% and then go nuts for a bit with red spikes on some cores. It will often recover somehow and keep playing, but at other times will just stop playback period. The graphics card is pretty basic, doubled the RAM on that to see if it helped. It didn't. I've also tried various CW configuration settings but find my initial values to be the most robust. Running the latest versions of everything, still a bit leery of plugin vendors with "call home" DRM schemes, keeping a log and putting together a pick list for a new DAW, thinking that might be the issue given the hours logged on this system, but ...??
