Using Cakewalk as a pre amp for guitar and mic line imputs
msmcleod replied to Secano SRL's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
I knew there was something that would do exactly what you need: I've actually got 3 of these on a 1U rack tray in my old 01X / i88X mLAN system. The 01X only has two XLR inputs, with 6 line inputs at the back. Each audiobuddy has two separate mic/instrument ins, so three of them give me mic inputs for the 6 line inputs of the i88X. They're now discontinued, but they do crop up second hand on eBay for around $50. -

How to prevent editing of midi creating multiple clips
msmcleod replied to Roy Slough's question in Q&A
These settings only affect Paste - not drawing new notes in the PRV. -
When you change driver mode from MME to UWP, the device names and their ordering may change - some older MIDI devices that don't support UWP may not appear at all. You need to ensure the order of your devices in UWP mode matches what they were in MME mode. To do this: 1. Switch back to MME 2. Go to the MIDI->Devices tab in preferences, and take a note of the order of your MIDI Output devices - only the ones that are checked matter. 3. Switch to UWP 4. Go to the MIDI->Devices tab in preferences, and set the order of your MIDI Output devices to match what you had in UWP. Start by having them all unchecked, then check the first one - click "Move Checked Output Devices to Top", then check the second one and click "Move Checked Output Devices to Top", and so on.

Not having any issues here with the latest version of Korg M1 (VST2 / VST3).

How to prevent editing of midi creating multiple clips
msmcleod replied to Roy Slough's question in Q&A
IIRC, there's a notional "distance" where adding a new note in the PRV will create a new clip, rather than using the existing one. I can't remember exactly what the time distance is, but it looks like this is what you're experiencing. The ability to turn off this behaviour came up in a meeting a few months back, but didn't go any further due to more pressing matters. I'll bring it up again. In the meantime, you could try this.... Instead of drawing the note at the point you want it to start then dragging to the end, try drawing the note starting within or close to the existing clip, drag it out to where you want it to end, then once it's added, adjust the start to where you wanted it to start originally. Because the new note starts within the existing clip, it won't create a new one and will instead just extend the length of the existing clip. Editing the note start won't create a new clip, because the existing clip now covers the time region you want the note in. You should only need to do this for the first note. -
It certainly will. I bought a Presonus Audiobox 96 as a portable interface because it's so small, and very cheap. However it's got the highest latency of any interface I've used by a long shot. The Audiobox certainly not a bad interface - it's very stable and the sound quality is good, but its latency is high. The 1st & 2nd gen 6i6 have average latencies - fairly good, but nothing like the RME. I believe the latencies on the later Scarlett 3rd / 4th gen interfaces are actually slightly higher, as they've prioritised stability using internal buffering over performance (and I suspect that new "air mode" has something to do with it too). One thing to add... we released the latest update to Sonar this week, which has massive engine improvements. I can run projects at half the buffer sizes I could before, which of course means half the latency.

MODO Bass 2 (paid version) gives Error 80004002
msmcleod replied to Ricky Wayne Hunt's topic in Instruments & Effects
Looks like you've got multiple copies of MODO Bass 2 on your machine. I recommend: - Uninstall MODO Bass 2 - Remove all the extra copies (search for MODO in the log and you'll find where they all are) - Reinstall MODO Bass 2 - Rescan your plugins Also, make sure you're using the latest version of VstScan, which supports the new VST3 folder hierarchy (the last CbB wasn't shipped with this... it'll be in the next update): https://discuss.cakewalk.com/topic/79994-several-new-instrument-and-plugin-updates-no-longer-work-as-vst3s/?do=findComment&comment=554479 -
Using Cakewalk as a pre amp for guitar and mic line imputs
msmcleod replied to Secano SRL's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
The small mixer suggestion is probably the cheapest option. Whilst you could get an interface with more mic/instrument level inputs, the cost will be way more. Even the 6i6 / 8i6 only have 2 mic inputs, with 2 / 4 line inputs on the back. The 18i8 has four mic inputs, and the 18i20 has eight mic inputs, but you're now talking 4 x the cost of your 4i4. You can get cheap 8 channel (or less) mixers by Mackie, Behringer, Thomann, Alto and a bunch of others. From the pictures of them, they all look like the same mixer with a different badge on them. You could just get a couple of standalone preamps rather than a mixer, but it'd most likely cost more. I've got an old 5 channel Thomann mixer. Absolutely nothing to write home about, but the preamps are clean and it does the job. Thomann do a two channel mixer that might be suitable - it's only £33 ( approx $42) - you'd probably NOT want to use the USB on it though (apart from for power), and it looks like phantom power is only 18v... -
Most important laptop specs for Cakewalk
msmcleod replied to jkoseattle's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
One thing I'd say about laptops, is that any laptop capable of running a DAW at any reasonable level is going to be noisy. My home laptop (6th gen i7) is manageable for mixing duties, but there's no way I could record anything with a condenser mic anywhere near it. My work laptop has an i9 and is probably the fastest machine I have, but it sounds like a jet engine once the fans start going... which when running any decent size project, is pretty much right away. Even an SM58 picks it up from the other side of the room. -
Where do I find the official rollback installer for 2024 07?
msmcleod replied to gmp's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
@gmp - if you're having authorization issues with CbB, please email support: support@cakewalk.com Support has had a handful of reports of authorization issues in CbB, but we've yet to narrow the issue down - so any additional information would be useful. Once we can get a solid repro, we can release an update to CbB with a fix. -
Not sure about John, but my 6i6 has USB2... no pops/clicks for me, and I usually run at an ASIO buffer size of 64. I up it to 256 during development, but that's down to the heavy load the dev environment puts on the CPU - not a limitation of the interface. FWIW, my RME Digiface USB is also USB 2 and has no problems recording / playing back on all 32 inputs & outputs simultaneously. Although USB 3 is obviously faster, USB 2 is more than capable of high performance (assuming the PC & audio interface manufacturers have written decent enough drivers). The main reason for choosing USB 3 for an audio interface would be the higher power output if using a USB powered interface with +48v phantom power... the 6i6 has it's own power supply though, so it's not an issue.

FWIW, three of the Cakewalk developers use RME interfaces - I use the Digiface USB, Noel uses the UFX II and Ben uses either the UFX II or UFX III. None of us are having any issues. All of us also have Focusrite Scarlett interfaces, and the latency on the RME is half what it is on the Focusrite's at the same buffer size. As far as I know, all of the RME products use the same driver. The only thing that differs I guess, is that we're all using Intel CPU's.

How do create a feedback loop?

No, Cakewalk actively prevents feedback. -

Installed synths not found in Synth Rack of existing projects
msmcleod replied to Cobus Prinsloo's question in Q&A
It could be that some of your plugins are using the new "put the plugin in a .vst3 subfolder" structure that Steinberg now recommend. Although Cakewalk's VST Scanner has been fixed to work with the new structure for Sonar, the new version of the VST Scanner wasn't packaged with the last version of CbB. I believe there will be a new CbB update fairly soon, and the new scanner will be bundled with that when it's released, but in the meantime you can download it here: -
FWIW I've found Antares plugins have never played well with SONAR/Cakewalk/Sonar. I've set the three Antares plugins I've got to use JBridge, and this solves it for me, although it does mean I'm stuck to using the VST2 versions.

'Measures' reset on mid-song tempo change possible
msmcleod replied to Sven's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
It looks like 80bpm is the correct tempo for the next section. You should be able to add a meter/key key change at measure 20 of 1/4, then a meter/key change of 4/4 at measure 21. Measure 20 then becomes one beat long, and the "WANT HERE" then starts on measure 21. Alternatively, add a meter/key change at measure 18 of 5/4, and the a meter/key change of 4/4 at measure 19 - in this case "WANT HERE" will start at measure 20. -
'Measures' reset on mid-song tempo change possible
msmcleod replied to Sven's topic in Cakewalk by BandLab
What you need is a tempo map that matches what you're playing. What I'd do as a first try: 1. Set the first tempo to 85bpm Assume the period between start of the silence and the 80bpm section is 2 measures of "n" bpm, and for arguments sake say it starts at measure 100 2. Set the now time to measure 99 and use "Set Measure Beat at Now", setting the measure to 99 3. Set the now time to measure 100 and use "Set Measure Beat at Now", setting the measure to 100 This is essentially reinforcing that the tempo is still 85bpm up until measure 100 4. Set the now time where it starts again at 80bpm, then use "Set Measure Beat at Now", setting the measure to 102 At this point, it should have added a tempo entry for "n" bpm that makes the gap between the silence and where it starts up again two measures long. 5. Add a 80bpm tempo change at measure 102 What you'll end up with: 1. The first part of the song at 85bpm 2. The silence / intro to 80bpm part as two measures long (probably at a fairly small bpm) 3. The 80bpm starting again on the next measure. -
Record on one computer, mix on another
msmcleod replied to badt1mes's topic in Production Techniques
FWIW, I've got an old Intel Core Duo Dell Laptop running Windows 7 32 bit, SONAR Platinum connected to a Yamaha 01X, i88x and Behringer ADA8000. I've no problems recording projects (up to 24 simultaneous tracks) on the laptop and going to either CbB or the new Sonar for mix duties or further editing. I can even re-open the project in SONAR Platinum for further overdubs, however if I think I might have to do this, I try to avoid using any of the new features missing in SONAR Platinum. Most features are fine though, with the notable exception of the Arranger - for that I just save the arranger track as an arranger template, so I can re-import it again. Nested track folders can be tricky too - the folders will get flattened out when opened in SONAR Platinum, but they should keep the hierarchy when loaded back into CbB/Sonar as long as you don't move tracks around. Obviously the older the version of SONAR, the more features you'll "lose" if you save the project in the older version... and as @Jonathan Sasor says, avoid 32 bit DirectX plugins apart from the Cakewalk stock ones (e.g. Sonitus). -
For individual clips you can use scrub.
-
If this is in Sonar, expect some big improvements in the next update. We found a bunch of areas that were causing slow operations in larger projects. In CbB, turning off the audio engine and/or closing the synth rack can speed things up significantly.

Whether 1TB is big enough all depends on your usage. I've got a 4TB SSD in my DAW machine, partitioned 512GB for my C Drive, and all my Kontakt libraries/sample based synth data on the 3.5TB "E" drive. My projects are on a separate 1TB SSD "F" drive. It's worth mentioning though, that all I have on my C drive is DAW related programs - i.e. SONAR, CbB, Sonar, MixCraft and Studio One... plus the odd utility... so no office programs at all. If you're using your PC for anything else, then you want at least 1TB for a C drive, and a separate drive for your data.
