Leave Before I Fall in Love - my first production using Cakewalk
Larry T. replied to Justin Schaffer's topic in Songs
very nice....really enjoy the beauty of the songs elegant yet powerful simplicity....there is a Russian duo called iamthe morning that you guys may find interesting and, hopefully, inspiring and useful....here is link to one of my favorites by them: -
nice....enjoy listening to it....interesting notes on how you composed, that's what i love about music: there are no rules to writing it and the results can sometimes be an unexpected but amazing creation ????
-
your stuff always has that great professionally recorded, played and mix feel and this one is no exception....I don't comment on your songs as they are not in my wheelhouse but this one i really like....my only nitpick is I'd work on getting that arrival of the electric guitar part done with less bombast but more emotional flash, like a Jeff Beck solo ( listen to Stanley Clarke's song "Journey to Love" and check out Beck's lead guitar work on that)....????
-
nicely done cosmic soundscape....i'm working on one of those as well, using the Locrian scale as it creates a spacey, ominous atmosphere....cheers!!!! ????
-
really great tune....sounds, playing, arrangement, mix ????
-
really nicely done heavy prog guitar based piece....i have to be in the mood to listen to that stuff though ????
-
Hi Tom....Thanks for giving it a listen....and, Yes to "repetition" being a common occurance in ambient music....i love three minute rockers (the Duo Brothers stuff is really well done)....but i do enjoy listening to and trying to write other styles....i do ambient now because my recording capabilities are just getting started and feel it's a good way to learn the basics before going all "Bohemian Rhapsody"/mega production creations....cheers!!!! ????
-
Thank You very much David, glad you like the song....do you mean the overall top end needs an increase or just the last minute (which is where i've been debating whether or not to bring it up a decibal or two)?? ????
-
Thanks again for the honesty...here is the latest mix ???? 100% correct...hear's (pun intended) the latest ???? hi mark....Thanks again for the nice words....it sounds like a dropped d but it's not, it's standard tuning with two acoustic guitars with one playing the notes on the 6, 4 and 3 strings and the second overdubbed acoustic i retuned and played the same notes with a capo now using the 4, 2 and 1 strings....here's the latest ???? hi Nigel....Thanks again for the comments....here is the new mix ????
-
Thanks Bjorn....i really have no explanation for how bad that first mix is....here is the new mix, if you have time please let me know how this one sounds ????
-
so....like....you can make a fortune from this one by licensing it to stores with self check out like CVS, Amazon Whole Foods (or whatever they're calling themselves today)....nice work jack, the mix is pretty awesome sounding....made me smile ????
-
Very well put together....i might add some high end to the strummed guitar, maybe bring up the vocalise....just minor things....overall you nailed the arrangement, choice of instruments and playing of all of them ????
-
Thank You Nigel....the opinions of you and a lot of the other musicians/audio engineers/all around renaissance folks here at the Songs forum is truly helping me get a good handle in a lot of this DAW business ????
-
Thank You mark....i've only been doing this DAW thing about 9 months so all the mistakes and experiments a lot of you guys did years ago i still have to go through....i'm redoing the entire mix and adding more of the flanged bass (kind of sounds fretless bit it isn't) and redoing the entire end....cheers!!!! ????
-
yes, i went crazy with the reverb....had it almost every track just to see what it would sound like....and the answer is....sounds terrible....Thanks for the compliment on the song itself!!!! ????
-
yes, i wasn't sure if my ears were missing it or what, but I wasn’t sure if this was the best possible mix....Thanks!!!! ????

compositionally this song is great....Donald Fagen would be proud to call this his own imho....excellent song writing jack ????
-
nice job....you guys have great taste in the songs you choose to cover....the vocals, as always, are great ??️??
-
great work....compositionally your music always intrigues me as the way you smoothly sonically move from bar to bar with so many instruments is the direction i would like to move towards ????
-
nice, steady tune....isn't it amazing what can sometimes be done with an improvised or, y'know, one-off performance?? ????
-
yes, the whole tone scale creates an ominous mood, very Art Zoyd-ish....you realized the piece extremely well after the 7 bar intro....question for you, these last few songs you have done using specific scale structures, is there anything you can say about the differences in composing when comparing the scales to each other?? ????
-
interesting piece a la Walter/Wendy Carlos' "Switched on Bach" from 1968....i also use modalities, or specific scales, as a jumping off point when writing music....it's amazing when taking a look at all the different chords available in a scale how many are duplicates of others....good job, as usual ????
