I didn't think the v1 to v2 was really worth it at release - but the hope is they will give a few years before charging for v3 - it is a gamble for sure at this point. Hoping we get some real needed/new features along the way. I haven't kept up. When they upgraded I decided I didn't need it for the basic stuff I do. I'm not a designer, I just make YouTube thumbnails, music coverart and some low level fun stuff. I'm sure Affinity would argue with me - but this is the list and for most users, I'd tend to this this isn't game changing stuff. Have they since patched and added things? In v2 the crop tool doesn't forget its settings anymore (if you use a different tool or photo between cropping).
