The alternative to what Cubase/Nuendo/VST3 is doing is for the project to tell you the plugin is missing and just 'drop' the data. If you do still have the original plugin loaded then Cubase/Nuendo won't just randomly replace it. Not sure what you are saying the negative of this approach is - I can't see one ? Like anything, there are ages cases where it won't be 100% successful but the alternative is to drop plugin altogether - and that is 100% not successful.
