About Me

  1. Obviously the best solution would be for Nektar to offer deep integration with CbB. In lieu of that however, I've had to build my own using a combination ot P6 Macros and AZ Controller.
  2. Having owned a Launchkey 49 (mk II) the single high point it has is its weight. The keys are kind of bad (though above those found in Berhinger's controllers), the velocity is meh, the drum pads are meh, the encoders and faders are meh. And honestly, € 230 is relatively on the high end for its intended audience, which seems to be bedroom producers just striking out. It's also not very well integrated with FL studio, the DAW a fledgling producer is likely to use. Though honestly in this price range, there's not much else to recommend either: Nektar Impact LX61, the Alesis VI61 (it has aftertouch) or NI's A61.
  3. I have finally set up my Nektar P6 to run Cakewalk in a good way. However, there is one exception that would be immensely helpful for us ITB guys. I would like to see a shortcut (key binding, alt + key, don't care) to open the Instrument VST on a selected Instrument Track. It would really make the world a better place. Currently the only way I can find to do this is by clicking the mouse over the Instrument Icon. This means that it's one of the few things I can't assign to a controller function.
  4. I have mentioned the whole known set of "supported" keyboard controllers: Roland A and Nektar Impact. Both are limited as hardware (f.e. no encoders) but the integration was provided by the companies. I write "was", Roland is no longer affiliated with Cakewalk and all Nektar's powerful controllers do not support Cakewalk. But MPK261 is not a bad choice for controlling Cakewalk. It has capable hardware. The only problem the solution is DIY. So you will need to invest a bit of time to make it work. Depending from what you are ready to sacrifice: you want transport buttons and 24 tracks (with ABC keyboard banks) Volume+Pan+One switch per strip (Mute OR Solo OR Arm, etc): setup Generic surface plug-in. you want overlay the right part section (8 encoders + 8 faders + 8 buttons, NO transport, NO ABC banks) for mixing, controlling plug-ins and executing commands: setup ACT MIDI plug-in. you want all controls, overlay functionality, LED feedback: you will need AZ Controller. First two options you can get up and running within an hour. Set MPK261 to Bitwig mode and follow Cakewalk PDF I have mentioned. For the third option you start with mentioned preset, that should work out of the box. To extend it or change the functionality you will need to spend significant time (days or even weeks) and without background in programming I would not recommend diving into complex modifications.
  5. My local place (Gear4Music) had new stock of the Arturia Keylab Essential 49 this morning so I ordered it for next day delivery. Will post my views once I have it all set up. Thanks @abacab for the recommendtion. Gear4Music also had new stock of the Nektar Impact LX49+ but in the end, as something that I will interact with a lot in the music making process, the Arturia won me over. Plus I can sell my old controller (iRig Keys Pro + ST3 bundle) for a decent amount to recoup some of the cost. Presumably I could also sell my existing copy of AL4 as this keyboard comes with a copy.
  6. I've noticed quite a few "out of stock" signs on various 49 key controllers at different suppliers and for various brands. I wonder if all the bedroom musicians have been stocking up to stay at home during the Covid-19 outbreak? It might pay to just wait for what you want, rather than settling for what's available at the moment. Nektar Impact LX49+ is currently showing in stock at the Amazon US website. Not so just a few days ago...
  7. Thanks for your reply @Tezza. So annoying that I cannot buy a Nektar. Annoyingly I even found that there were a couple of sales on them before the pandemic with the 49 key version going for around £90.
  8. In my search for a new 49 key controller with integrated transport, pads, faders and knobs I had pretty much decided on a Nektar Impact LX49+ but for some reason (COVID-19?) in the UK/Europe they are out of stock everywhere and the "stock expected" date seems to keep moving to the right. Maybe a new model is due? IDK. Anyway, looking slightly higher up the price scale I then found the Novation Lauchkey 49 Mk2 which is in stock at Amazon for next day delivery. It seems to tick all the boxes but I wondered how well its features could be integrated into CbB. Are there any Launchkey owners here who are using one successfully with CbB and if so how easy was it to set up and use all of the features in CbB? I'm sure I read that the Launchkey series have fixed configs for specific DAWs (InControl?) which would make it tricky to use in non-supported DAWs. I don't mind doing a bit of manual configuration if that is possible but would only want to have to do this once so that anything that I have manually set up could be saved and recalled for future use. I do also have Studio One, Cubase, Reaper, Reason and Ableton Live some of which seem to be natively supported by Launchkey but I use these less than CbB .
  9. Ah that's a pity The two top runners for me at the moment are the Nektar Impact LX 49+ or M-Audio Oxygen 49 Mk IV. I can get the latter slightly cheaper (£104 inc VAT vs 115). I'm reading through a lot of Cakewalk forum threads about both and trying to decide. I already have all of the software that comes with the Oxygen but not Bitwig that comes with the Nektar (but do I need yet another DAW?!). From reading through various forums I'm unsure whether the built-in preset configurations of the Nektar are really worth having as ACT config in CbB doesn't seem too hard (I also use Cubase, Reaper and Studio One but much less than CbB). Would be interested in any opinions of anyone who owns either. I should probably start a new thread with an appropriate heading.
  10. That Nektar setup looks to be quite similar to that used for the Roland/Cakewalk A-PRO series keyboards. Both inputs have to be selected in Cakewalk, one for the keyboard, and the other for the control surface. The modes for transport, mixer, and virtual instrument appear to align with the ACT functions. I finally got my A300PRO working, with a bit of effort. Not currently using it as I found it a bit short (32 keys), and I don't really care for a spring loaded modulation joystick that Roland seems to be fond of... but I do miss the sliders...
  11. The integration with many DAWs including Cakewalk was what attracted me to it abacab. I found this thread which is interesting as it seems that many people have issues with getting it to work fully in Cakewalk... ...but there are actually lots of threads on this forum (and the old one) about integrating the Nektar series of keyboards with Cakewalk (I'm using this to mean various versions of Sonar and CbB). If you Google "Nektar with Cakewalk" you can find them plus links to the relevant Nektar support pages and PDF manual for using Nektar controller keyboards with Sonar. Here's the --> Nektar Sonar setup PDF
  12. I have had that one on my watch list for a while, for if I ever need another controller. My current one is all knobs, no faders. Sweetwater says more "on the way" here. $169.99 USD. Free shipping in US. You can sign up for notification when in stock. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ImpactLX49P--nektar-impact-lx49-keyboard-controller
  13. Did you have any luck with your Graphite 49? Unfortunately, by the time I decided to go for it, it was sold. Anyway, after looking into it a bit more the Nektar Impact LX49+ looks like a good alternative but they seem to be out of stock everywhere (maybe due to the virus?). Have you had any experience with one of these at all? Thanks
  14. I changed the title of this post as I have changed my mind about getting a separate pad/knobs/faders controller box. Here's a direct link to the latest post at the end of this thread if you have any opinions on Nektar vs M-Audio, thanks... As per the title I am looking for a something to complement my existing keyboard controller (iRig Keys Pro). I want to be able to trigger loops and also alter MIDI cc's from the sliders. Something like Maschine but a lot cheaper! The AKAI Professional APC Mini looks perfect for my needs but, as with many of these, they seem to be marketed for use with Ableton Live. I assume that they can be used fine within any other DAW e.g. CbB? I particularly want to use it with PluginGuru Unify within CbB. Does anyone have one or can anyone else suggest any alternatives? Thanks in advance. Incidentally, I did look at software options such as Xotopad but I quite like the idea of physical buttons and sliders instead.
  15. Don't now if my issue is related, but I've been seeing something like this with regularity the past month or so: The input to my MIDI tracks keeps switching from my MIDI controller (Nektar LX-61+) to my audio interface (Scarlett 6i6). I have to switch it back manually. The Nektar controller has also lost a bunch of DAW functions, roughly, it seems to me, at the same time as this I/O weirdness. As usual, I don't remember exactly when this started, so I can't blame Noel for a bad update. Or can I...?
  16. I opened a two-year-old project in hopes of finally finishing it, and ran into this problem: The MIDI instruments (Addictive Drums, Dimension Pro and True Pianos) all play as expected from the MIDI data on the timeline (recorded long ago), but I can't trigger any of them with my keyboard (Nektar Impact LX61+). I can see MIDI activity on the meters, but no sound. I have checked the I/O, and the settings seem to be correct (I don't know much about MIDI settings, but these settings match the settings on another project where everything is working). If I add a new MIDI instrument, that instrument works as expected, and all the old and new audio tracks are fine, too. Further complication: I use the loops in Addictive Drums, and now I can't hear them in the AD preview (the preview cursor doesn't budge at all), nor can I hear anything when I trigger individual drums with the mouse. Something has changed in my system, because obviously this all worked when I created this project in the first place. It's worth mentioning that these days when I Insert|Soft Synth, the input defaults to my audio interface, and I have to manually change it to my keyboard controller. I've looked at all the settings in the track pane and in preferences, but I don't know what I'm looking for, and the only thing that seemed out of order is that the old project apparently was recorded at 96k, and my current default sample rate for new projects is 44100. I don't know if that would cause this problem, but wouldn't CbB respect the sample rate of an existing project and continue using its original rate regardless? Does anyone know how I can get back this lost functionality? Thanks!
  17. Kinda how the title says it. I would like to be able to record automation information into my Cakewalk using an expression pedal, mostly for wah, whammy and volume swell effects. As a guitarist, using a mouse in a plugin or "drawing" it just isnt intuitive like a pedal would be. Is this possible? And if so how? I have a Mission expression pedal that is set up to use with my VooDoo Labs Ground Control Pro that I use to control my Axe FX 2, I also have a Line 6 Helix LT, would either of these be an option to use? While we are on the topic, does anyone know how to do automation with the wheels or sliders from a Nektar 49+? Before I have pretty much printed my wah, whammy, effect on/off during recording, but want to move in this new direction of implementing midi and using controllers ect so I can focus on the performances as we are writing and worry about everything else after. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  18. Hi everyone, I'm trying to set up a USB MIDI Controller to work with Cakewalk. This is my third attempt to have a MIDI keyboard recognized by Cakewalk. First attempt was connecting a Yamaha NP-25 through MIDI input on the audio interface. It didn't work with any software. Maybe there was a problem with the keyboard or the MIDI interface. Second attempt was a Nektar USB MIDI keyboard. It didn't work with Cakewalk by BandLab. It was recognized by Cakewalk Sonar though. I convinced the seller there was a compability issue with the latest Cakewalk verison and he took it back. Third and current attempt is a recently bought M-Audio Oxygen 25 USB MIDI controller. Same behaviour as with the previous one. It is recognized by Cakewlak Sonar but not by Cakewalk by BandLab. It appears on the Preferences >> MIDI >> Devices list, I select it as input but no key strokes are recognized. Since Sonar does not work with my audio interface (Behringer) I have to work with Cakewalk latest version (which does work well with the audio interface). At this point, and after searching online for known issues with this MIDI keyboard (which I found none; it appears to be the most compatible MIDI keyboard on the market), I have to ask for your help before I'm forced to switch to another DAW, which I'd hate to. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance. Vasco PS: Windows 10, Cakewalk by BandLab, M-Audio Oxygen 25 and Behringer UMC404HD (I think the Audio interface info is not relevant for this issue).
  19. I used an LX61 with Cakewalk for a while, no problems with getting everything to run. Think of the DAW controls and the Keyboard as 2 different devices that must be setup individually. I cannot remember how I set it up now but you need to follow the advice given on the Nektar site for setup with Sonar as I don't think they have specific instructions for Cakewalk or at least they didn't when I was using it. If you follow the Sonar setup guide you should be fine. You have to activate both devices in the Cakewalk dialog box and make sure they are in the right boxes. There is an additional step as I remember for setting up with Sonar, just installing the setup files won't do it, look on their site for the instructions.
  20. Hi there, I just purchased a new Nektar Impact LX49+ MIDI controller to use with my Cakewalk by Bandlab DAW. Nektar works as a basic MIDI instrument (I can play my VST synths and occasionally map the knobs successfully depending on the VSTi) However when I try to use the DAW Transport controls (Play/Stop etc.) or use the sliders to control the volume in Cakewalk’s mixer, I have absolutely no response. I’ve downloaded all the necessary setup files for Cakewalk SONAR via the Nektar Impact website as a registered user and installed on my Windows 10 machine, and still nothing. I’ve also set up the Nektar Impact correctly as an ACT Controller in Cakewalk settings. Has anyone with a Nektar Impact been able to successfully get it ‘talking’ to Cakewalk and use it to control the DAW transport and volume sliders? It’s been very discouraging thusfar. Really appreciate your time and assistance! cheers
  21. I can't specifically answer the question, but I can say that I have a Nektar MIDI keyboard that has faders and transport controls, and the only way it can work as both a MIDI controller and a DAW controller is to install a specific driver. So you might check with the manufacturer of your keyboard and see if there is such a driver for it.
  22. Thanks again for that evaluation list. With that in mind I tried Behringer X Touch (the big one) and I was totally amazed that it works nearly perfectly, the motor faders are great! I had luck in snatching a perfect looking b-stock for the price of nearly the Nektar. I'll set it on a swivel arm for notebooks to save space. 🙂 So the smaller controllers all go back. Nice. The next thing I consider is the use of an extra controller for drums. This time I wait before ordering as your information is very helpful and would have saved lots of effort, transport etc. The ones I already focus are: - KORG nanopad - Midiplus X Pad - Akai MPD 218 or 226 - Arturia Beatstep (small version) Could you recommend any of these or another similar one?
  23. If you need "the first" controller, get Behringer X-Touch Mini. If will work out of the box with AZ Controller plug-in. From your list X Touch (big one, with displays) is exact copy of Mackie in functionality (not in controls quality), it will work as desired. Faderport V1 (old one) has special plug-in, but not V2. X Touch One will work more or less ok. They try to mimic Mackie, but since the DAW does not know it has just one fader, it is not working exactly as Mackie. Nanocontrol will also work. But it is "nano"... If you primary need buttons or your projects are no more then 8 tracks, it can be almost as good as Mackie. But at the time you load new project, shift to different tracks in the same project or try to control FX, you will need to bring knobs/faders "in position". Nektar P1, when ingegrated, has guides for faders and endless knobs. So it is way less work to shift tracks and no work for knobs. With nanocontrol it is different. Back to X-Touch Mini. It has encoders (as its big brothers) and a set of buttons. The functionality is listed there: http://www.azslow.com/index.php/topic,377.0.html
  24. Hi azslow3, thank you for giving me help for that first step! Wow, I got the Keystation's transport controls working! The handshake was the problem! :-)) Now I can go for the bigger part: Sad for the Nektar, as I like it from optics and haptics. But if I had a better idea what exactly to do I would be willing to put a little effort in programming every key and control on that device. If I can be sure that it will be really usable after that effort. If using an alternative would be quicker to dispose and better to use afterwards, can you advice me which one is best for Cakewalk (which one to try first)? As I have alternatives here, as said before. You seem to know almost every of them... 😉 1. Behringer X Touch One 2. Behringer X Touch (with the 9 motorfaders) 3. Presonus Faderport V2 4. KORG Nanocontrol Studio Or is there another one which works better out of the box and is in that price range? Original Mackie Control ist even used too expensive for my level. 🙂
  25. There is no well defined "Play" nor "Volume" commands any DAW should recognize. The keyboard just sends normal key messages when you press play, you need explain the DAW how that should work. For Keystation: * put transport buttons into Mackie mode (if it is in HUI), see the documentation how * remove ACT MIDI and put Mackie Control, set its input as on your screenshot (no output). Open its configuration (Cakewalk Utilities menu) and set "Disable handshake". The fader works as "MIDI Volume". Some synth recognize it, some not. To control something in the DAW, you can add ACT MIDI, with input set to the first input of Keystation, so the same as keys. And configure the first "Fader" there (see ACT MIDI documentation how). With Nektar you are out of luck, Nektar has not written plug-in for Cakewalk and the device does not use any common protocol (like Mackie). Can be configured, but that is not simple...
